$550.00 | | Purchased At: | Cycle Sales Boardman Ohio | | Strengths: | Great overall bike. It is a 98 Mesa GSX. This was my first mountain bike, and is still my current steed. The Only things Ive replaced are minor, such as tires, cables, and grips. I kept the bike in relatively good condition, so it is still kicking ass, and taking whatever I throw at it. | | Weaknesses: | Frame seems a little large for me at stand over height. I think it might be a 19" frame, and Im only 5'9", so that doesn't help.
Deraiulers are kind of shady, Ive replaced the front with a new XTR unit because I smashed the stocker. Stock seat seems to suck ass now more than it did in the past.
| | Similar Products Used: | my friends Scott | | Bike Setup: | Stock except for XTR front deraiuler, and Michelin wildgripper lite S tires. | | Bottom Line: | Excellent bike for the money, and for a starting out rider. Drivetrain upgrade, as well as fork, is a must for an intermediate rider. However its kind of pointless to do so when you can get a 98 homegrown for less than the price of upgrading parts. Still a kick ass bike, if it was not, Id of replaced it.

$150.00 | | Purchased At: | www.propertyroom.com | | Strengths: | She ain't exactly pretty, but what a damn ride. Extremely durable, manueverable, and responsive on tight curves. An overall solid ride. | | Weaknesses: | Weak bar ends and pedals. | | Similar Products Used: | 2001 GT i-drive 4.0, old hard-tail Mongoose. | | Bike Setup: | XCR suspension seatpost, Ritchey clip-less pedals, Michelin Wildgripper Hot S (in none other than in flaming red), a cushy yet cheap Specialized Body Geometry seat. | | Bottom Line: | Ok, for all you Schwinn Mesa GSX lovers, I got mine for the low $150, which included shipping, from an on-line auction. I didn't know anything about this bike prior to purchasing it blindly on-line. Man, this set rocks! I, of course, had to ditch the nasty seat and pedals...and am planning to upgrade other components. But, overall, it's an awesome buy whether at $500 or $150. Betsy, as I like to call her, takes the worse licking but just drives on. Minus her unsightly complexion (paint chafs easily), she's a beaut in that simplicy in design makes her durable for downhill whipe-outs and challenging drops.....very responsive in high-speed cornering.....a beast in hill climbing. She's ready to ride--anytime, anyplace (EXCEPT where there's mud)--quick on the march, stops on a dime. Although she is a middle to light-heavyweight bike, the ride will fool you into believing she's lighter than she really is. If you are looking for something to go tear-assing through all sorts of terrain (even through the urban jungle looking for a slurpee) and not worrying about failing on you, this bike make the finest choice. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Bike is a great ride I just wish it would stay looking as good as it rides. I changed the wheels for fear of them flying apart on my way to where I like to ride. Seat is mildly uncomfortable after a long ride. Paint easily scars. | | Similar Products Used: | None. Used a lot of full-suspension bikes, but few hardtails of this caliber. | | Bike Setup: | Standard, with the exception of new brake pads. | | Bottom Line: | This is my first "real" mountain bike. I've had experience with a wide variety of bikes, but this was the first I've actually bought, and it hasn't dissapointed.
As an introductory bike, Schwinn's Mesa GSX has the market cornered. (I'm referring to the 1998 Mesa GSX; it was downgraded for 1999.) All of the componentry is top-notch for the price. The frame is light, stiff, and suits it's intended audience to a T.
One feature that stood out in my early riding days were the brakes. Even now, I have to be aware of their immense power, lest I land on my back with hard front braking. The control is excellent, and they'll rival disc brakes in most conditions. (NOT mud! Anything that involves water should be avoided.)
To cut this short, it's an excellent value for the money.

So what, move on. Some of us got lucky and well, good for you. Now in review of the 99 (since it's the only thing out there) I'd say (and I'm a former road racer gone grad student) it's just what the doc ordered for entry level. It's a good frame for 500 bucks with a chance to upgrade. So break the cheap stuff in, see if you like it and upgrade if need be. Don't listen to all these wanna be pro's (it's amazing how they're all so hard core isn't it) bashing something that is completely irrelevant here and now. For the best bikes in our range (450- 500), I looked at just two bikes, the Trek 830 and the Mesa GSX. The frames are comparable, you don't need a downhill super mega racer, trust me. Maybe 3% percent of us don't fall into the weekend warrior slot. The difference for me was the name brand shocks on the Mesa vs. the no name on the trek. Also I might be vain and admit the paint job was much better too. Though no one else looks at that. That's it, it's that simple. For 60 bucks more you get a (very) slight upgrade in components, a reliable entry level shock, and trigger shifting (RFS) vs. the Treks grip shift. I felt it was worth it. I did switch the boring black tires for the Moabs with the red trim. It looks pretty classy now. Remember, the 98's are gone and you can always upgrade. So, when and if my weekend warrior self does that, I guess that would make me......a PRO racer for Team Schwinn! Just like the rest of these guys, who also bought an ENTRY LEVEL bike. Read the decent reviews. It's a great buy for the money. I would give 25 chili's just to make up for the idiots living in the past who no longer realize were over half way thru 99. Mine came with a Rock Shox Indy S, but after a few weeks, i realised that the bike rocked, and the fork sucks. I quickly updated to a Marzocchi Atom Bomb, and neither the bike, nor the shock have failed me since. The only thing wrong with the Mesa is it's cheap components (bar ends, stem, etc.). After completely bombing a 6 foot jump off a flight of stairs, I relised that this bike would hold through longer than I would, but its, cheap bar ends wouldnt (they snapped in half). If you are a guy who is looking for an all around good bike to go on weekend rides, and trips to the supermarket at a great price, this is a bike for you. There are two tipes of bikes. I've had my GSX for about 9 months now. It is my primary means of transportation on and off the road. At first I beefed up the indy S fork with stiffer elastimers. It comes stock with only one side of the fork filled, but you can pop an elastamer in both sides with no hassle. That really helped because I'm a pretty big guy at 225lbs. This is the only bike for the price that I felt could handle a guy of my size. I eventually ended up changing to a 98 Judy DH fork and I love it. I also replaced the peddles after busting the plastic pieces of shit that come stock on it. Over all I give it five stars and two thumbs up for the weekend warrior looking for a good bike with room to upgrade. | Overall Rating: |

The components are okay, but consider the price you are paying. It gives you a lot of spending cash for upgrades. I have already added a Dean seatpost, stem, brakes and clipless pedals. I have also added Shimano Deore XTR front and rear derailleurs with a Coda crank. Next, I will invest in a quality fork. The Indy S just doesn't cut it. If you are even thinking of buying the Mesa GSX, do it today. The 99 Mesa GSX was downgraded badly. The bikers must have been buying the 98 mesa gsx instead of the moab3 because of their strong similarities and cheaper price. For the 99, the mesa gsx stinks! This might sound a little crazy, but the 98 Mesa GSX sure does look like and ride like the 99 Moab3 (except for the paint job of course). | Overall Rating: |

I've had my 21 98 red mesa gsx for a little over three months. HTis bike is a great buy for the money. The problems I've had deal with the components. I know I'm a fat boy (210)but I broke the pedals (the plastic center part) after a hard weekend on my farvorite trails. I've had shifting problems with the rear stx but that was little stuff. This last weekend I smashed the rear rim and the bike shop says they couldn't fit it. All together this bike is a great buy and you lose very little compared to the Moab. | Overall Rating: |

The first thing that catches your eyes about the Mesa GSX is the paint job and graphics, very nicely done, by far the best I've seen in this price range. Next you look at the componets, STX rear and Alivio in the front, V brakes, threadless headset, OK shock, removeable hanger. WOW it has everything an Intermediate rider needs. I bang her around alot and she asks for more. The MESA GSX the sexiest, most dependable bike out there for under $600.00. If she was a woman I would marry her, she's that sexy and a good ride. Don't be fooled by buying a trek 6000. It's all name, people keep breaking the cranks and boy is it ugly. If only my wife would let me bring my mesa in the bedroom......... | Overall Rating: |

I have endoed a couple of times and the bike took a pretty nasty dive and came up with no problems. It can take a beating and still looks great even covered with mud!!! Only problems is toeclip overlap so I keep kicking the front tire during some of the technical stuff (15 inch frame)...gonna go clipless and see if it helps. If the review was based on the color of a bike, my LE wins hands down (bright yellow on blood red w/ black trim). Mechanically, the bike holds it's own against higher-end models. The only forseeable change I'll make is to the forks, but only after I torture them beyond repair. A superior platform for for any level of rider looking for a sound Hybrid. | Overall Rating: |

I costs 40 dollars less than the 98 but the STX/Alivio components have been downgraded to alivio/acera-x components the brakes are generic vs and the tires are now no names. the 99 only has 2 things better on it than the 98. Its looks and price. Instead of getting a 99, get a 98 on clearence. Only 2 stars for the 99 | Overall Rating: |

This bike is incredible. I was riding down Flatbush ave, and all of a sudden I heard a gun shot. There immediately was a flurry of shots. Stray bullets were flying everywhere and all of a sudden, I fell off this bike, like something slammed into me. I was lying on the floor stunned. I looked at my brand new red/yellow GSX worried I might have scratched it, but then I looked closer at the frame and noticed a small bullet was slightly embedded in it. I had later discovered that it was a .22 calibur bullet. It was unbelievable. It had actually stopped a bullet from hitting my leg. I am still riding thanks to the Mesa. I can't seem to thank Schwinn enough for this sturdy bike. If you have any concern about getting shot at, I must tell you from experience, buy the damn GSX just to be safe. Kevlar vests are around $1000 but the GSX I got for only $450. Now that's a bargain. | Overall Rating: |

Like everyone else has said, the bike is a great deal. In stock form it does pretty well but it does leave something to be desired. The indy S fork is at best adequate. The STX/ Alivio component grouping is a travesty when you think of the qualiyty of the frame. The stuff works okay but it's really heavy. In fact, you won'y find any other bike over $400 with Alivio components. Schwinn really jipped us there; consider the fact that the main competition for the GSX is the Raliegh M-400 which has MUCH better components (with the exception of crappy grip shifters). However, the M-400 frame can't hold a candle to the GSX Frame- its not as stiff. The good news is because the frame is so good you can really turn this thing into a race machine. I have put a Judy SL and all STX-RC components and the bike lost five pounds! Got the stuff used right of this site and spent less than $400! Also, this has be the most colorful bike anywhere. It really sticks out in a crowd whcih can be embarrassing when people see the Alivio stuff and the Indy S. So, buy the bike, learn how to ride, then throw better component and a better fork and you're really in businees. I give it four stars stock, five after its tinkered with. | Overall Rating: |

I just want to say that if you want a bike for $500 or less, there is no better bike than a Mesa GSX. By the way I own a Trek 6500 that's the bomb, but it cost a little more. My brother is the one with the Mesa and I have ridden it on many occasions. The frame is plenty stiff and responsive. The fork is certainly lacking but what do you expect for such a good price. I will say it once again. This is THE bike to get for $500. As an example to its strength, my brother was transporting his bike and it fell of the back of his car. This was on the freeway going 75 MPH. All it did was bend the derailleur hanger (which is replaceable) and knocked the wheels a little out of true. The frame suffered no ill effects at all. Wow. What a bike. If you have a little more money get a Trek 6500 or 7000. | Overall Rating: |

I picked up the Mesa GSX about 2 months ago and have really only one thing to say: SWEEEEET!!!!. For the money, I don't think that i could have gotten a better bike. The aluminum frame is stiff as nails and the bike handles better than i had expected. i've tried lots of more expensive hard tails, and for their over-inflated costs, i didn't really get that much more out of them than i do out of my GSX. The one fault that I have with the bike is the front deraileur - not nearly as smooth as the STX on the back. Oh well, for $30 i can pick up a new front deraileur and supe up the bike. the cost is still way down. overall, a sweet bike for the price - well worth the money!! | Overall Rating: |

Schwinn rules! The Mesa GSX rules!Seriously for around 5 bills this bike has to be about the best deal around. I've had mine about a month now and have ridden it on all types of terrain with no problems. It's light (around 26lbs), durable and climbs really well. The Shimano STX rapidfire shifters are smooth and flawless, and the tektro brakes stop on the dime. The only things I would change are the saddle (painful) and the pedals (steel cage sucks). But these are minor quibbles compared to what you get for the money. When I test rode bikes, I tried similar priced models by Cannondale and Mongoose. The MESA just rode better than the others all the way around. Finally, the paint job is awesome (I have the red and yellow). I've recieved compliements from lots of folk and people with way more expensive hardtails have been checking out my ride. Like I said before, Schwinn rules! The MESA GSX Rules! | Overall Rating: |

It handles well on all surfaces, climbs like a mountain goat, and stops on a dime. I am a big dude (245lbs) but the frame acts like I weigh 150 lbs. The fork soaks up everthing, and it turns like a Ferrari. The only thing I have had trouble with is the front derailleur, and the pedals could be better (clipless). Other then that, you can't beat it for the bucks. My compliments to Schwinn for making a great bike for a terrific price! | Overall Rating: |

I purchased the Schwinn MESA GSX in May and have already gotten my moneys worth from the bicycle. The bike is lightweight and takes the off-road pounding like a champ. In the few months that I have owned the bicylce I have taken it through rocks, sand, gravel, pavement, mud, many singletrack and jeep trails. The bike does have one minor problem, the peddles should be clipless. My GSX is taken out a minimum of 4 days a week and riden for atleast 1.5 hours a trip. I can think of one trip that just blew my mind away, i was riding out on a single track trail, when out of knowhere a heavy thunderstorm came in (only in San Antonio) and i was still out in no man's land. Rode the bike out of the trail and 12 miles to my house, and the bicycle did NOT give out on me. I was expecting the gear shifting to give me problems with all of the mud piled up on my rear cogs and derailer, but the GSX handled great. Needless to say when i got home, i did not have a clean spot on me, nor did my bike. I could not have purchased a better bike for the money. When compared to the many bicyles on the market today, i can HONESTLY say, that the Schwinn Mesa GSX comes with better components, better technological design, lighter frame, and not to mention a much cooler paint job. The frame is similar to the more expensive Moab bicycles, so I figured, as my riding skills improve, so do the extras on my bicycle. The Rock Shock forks work great. As far as recomending this bike, if you have lots of money to blow, then don't buy this bike, but if you want a ride that comes with good components, excellent handling and durability at a great price (under $500.00), BUY THIS BIKE. You wont regret it.

I bought this bike for under $479.00 anticipating nothing much but a bike that rolls! But to my amazement I was completely surprised. This bike has taken tremendous amount of abuse (I am beginner trail biker) including nasty crashes (thanks I am still in one piece). Yet, it still keeps on ticking. Every time I go on group rides, my bike gets the Oh a Schwinn dirty looks, but at the end of the ride, the looks change to Oh a Schwinn!! wide eyed looks! Lastly, it climbs like a goat. Excellent stiff yet reasonably light aluminum frame!. Only thing I would change is the fork if you ride hard, else, this bike is the best bang for the buck. So, if you're just a beginner and not sure if biking is what you really want to be interested in down the road, then don't hesitate and buy this gem of a bike. The only other bike in this price range with better components is the Raleigh M400, but the shops I visited didn't have one on the floor. After a 10 minute test drive on the Schwinn, I was completely sold. It cost $479+tax, came with an Al frame, Rockshox Indy S fork, STX and Alivio drivetrain, STX Rapidfire shifters (YES!), and Tektro linear pull brakes which stop very quickly! The Raleigh comes with a STX-RC and STX drivetrain (8 rear cogs instead of 7)and an Indy C fork, but like I said, I couldn't find one to test it. Besides the Schwinn really looks killer (red/yellow) and feel very light on the trail.. easy to ride fast! | Overall Rating: |
