Strengths: The 1997 Mesa GS was anything-proof. I found it to be very customizeable myself, and since I load my bikes down, I didn't notice the weight. I changed the crankset from stock to a Shimano XTC, and the derailer problems vanished.
The rear rim became a Shimano Araya model.
This bike survived two bike to bike collisions, one of which landed me in the emergency room.
It's crazy fast (flat ground speeds up to 30 MPH), and ultra stable. I highly recommend this model and year for a used bike or restoration.Weaknesses: Some skipping on the stock crankset, chain tends to jump off lowest sprocket a bunch.
The weight may be too much for some riders.
You gotta keep trueing the rims all the time, too.
RST fork is not really designed for front suspension as much as it just smooths out the ride.Bottom Line: Pretty much what you see here--its a good beginner bike. You might stick with the Mesa line after riding one of these, or maybe upgrade to full suspension.
I like the fact you can use a rack with it.

Similar Products Used: Next Matrix FVM. That's a good bike, too, but I think the Mesa GS is a bit better.
Bike Setup: Hardtail with Rapid Suspension Technology fork and roughly 2 inches of travel. Bike was loaded, with additional lights, F/X frame padding, and a rear triangle rack.

Strengths: Frame is very strong, The suspension Isn't bad. Brakes are pretty good.Weaknesses: Bottom bracket broke on me. Components are cheap. Its a Heavy bike, It is not disc brake compatable. rims bend easily.Bottom Line: Its a great bike for entry level riders, but i don't reccomned it for a serious cross country racer umless you are just startng out. It is a great value for the bike you get

Strengths: Light but strong kicks butt, though not mine. It has very responsive steering and its Rockshox shocks rule. It is good down hill, and up, on assphault to mud to snow. is good for all rider skill levels, because it does not fight back as some better or worse bikes do.Weaknesses: Schwinn's not a company anymore!!! Its front derailer bites ass hard, causing many smashed family jewels. Its middle front sprocket(or chainwheel) got the crap bent out of it under normal riding conditions, due to bad materials, needs to be replaced, is not Giant brandBottom Line: good for all conditions, making for a good first bike, but is realtively un upgradable.

Strengths: Bombproof frame, responsive and stiff. Paintwork is durable. Components are cheap but take a lot to wear out.Weaknesses: Heavy at 30+ lbs. No disc brake mounts. Stoppage of production and import - no improved 2001/2002 models to lust after.Bottom Line: Value-for-money. You won't regret it. Solid construction will take a beating anytime, anywhere. Good for 1st timers. Can use for urban assault, commuting, and mild racing. I won't ever sell the bike. Have very fond memories riding it.

Strengths: Relatively lightweight. Rear derailleur works well. V-brakes excellent. Rock shox OK.Weaknesses: Lousy front derailleur.Bottom Line: Good first bike - it's held up well even on the toughest North shore has to offer (eg lady's only, bogeyman). I'd recommend it to anyone as a good starter bike - as long as you replace the front derailleurs right away.

Strengths: this bike has pleased me in almost every way, the shocks are great as rock shox always are and it's light weight has made racing and jumping it relatively easy.Weaknesses: the shimano derailor has displeased me somewhat. after the first couple races and jumps the derailor has started to get loose and gears are skipping i think the people at schwinn could have choosen better components than shimano.Bottom Line: the part of the bike that is 100% schwinn pleases me.the others...well...suck.

Bottom Line:
This was the most inexpensive bike with Rock Shocks that I could find in my size-6.3'and the bike's a 23incher. The bike feels substantial but not heavy. I am using it for a beach cruiser and have used it for a few days now. The Rock Shock Indys work well on the pavement, and beach bike path here in L.A. The rains have created many insances of sand so I am jumping on and off the path. The shocks soak them up. I also like the shifter. It's noticeably easier than the base Mesa and was one of the reasons that I upgraded. I can climb pretty steep hills in Santa Monica and Palisades and so far, I am very pleased. The action is very smooth.So far, I'm pleased with the bike.
