Favorite Trail:Any
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $100.00
Purchased At:Private
Strengths:Fast, comfortable, lightweight, and more. Style is nice although its quite old. It also handles well on really tight single track trails.
Weaknesses:Fork, rear shock (elastomer)
Similar Products Used:Proflex 757
Bike Setup:Replaced rear elastomer with spring.
Bottom Line:Great bike for the price I got it for. Still rides great even without tuning it for more than 6 months while riding on hard trails. I've ridden it over 150+ miles and its still going strong.

Date Reviewed: May 23, 2008
Favorite Trail:Eston Hills
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:The frame appears to be chromoly so is fairly rust proof.
Weaknesses:The elastomers for suspension are quite hard to get hold of and have a tendancy to go hard and need replacing.
Bike Setup:Proflex 455, Rockshox Dart 3 front suspension.
Bottom Line:This bike is a bit of a classic now. Probably approaching 12-14 years old. Most parts are upgradable minus the back suspension as far as i know, however i have heard that some have found clever ways to upgrade the back suspension. The front suspension is easy enough to upgrade from the old elastomer set up. As long as the frame stays solid i'll just keep updating the working parts. The basic design of the frame is quite classy and eye catching. Proflex has a bit of a cult following, it is a nice ride and the frame matarial has a lot of energy and strength to it. Mine is 14 years old and still going strong.

Date Reviewed: October 23, 2002
Favorite Trail:Wolf back ridge
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $700.00
Purchased At:SUMMIT Bicycles
Strengths:Fast. Sturdy.Lightweight, nice paintjob
Weaknesses:Rattles and very very very LOUSY BRAKES which don't stop for beans.
Bike Setup:Rockshox(silver ones dont know the name), terrible plastic brakes.
Bottom Line:Overall good bike. Super fast, I can toast everyone up and down hill. Has huge veloceraptor tires. Weak spot are the elastomers and front shock and also when you go on bumps the bike rattles alot. But great bike for 96. I NEED A NEW BIKE!! 4 chillies

Submitted by Francis a Weekend Warrior from Melton Mobray
Date Reviewed: December 23, 1999
Favorite Trail:
Sherwood Pines
Duration Product Used:
less than 1 month
Strengths:
Super cheap!!
Sturdy bike
Weaknesses:
Looks dated these days
Brakes (STX canti's)
Bike Setup:
Stock at the moment
Bottom Line:I've recently started mountain biking in the last six months, this is my second off roader, the first being a Diamondback Ascent, rigid bike. This one came up v. cheap secondhand, I think it's a '95 bike, (Proflex 555).Since I didn't want anything too sloppy (My strengths definitely in speed uphill and on the flat), the hard nature of the proflex's all Elastomer set up suits me fine - I ride this even faster than my rigid! Haven't tried it on the really rough stuff yet - where I hope it'll be less bucking bronco than the DB.

RIDGE TRAIL
Duration Product Used:
6 months
Strengths:
TIGHT SINGLETRACK, TECHNICAL SECTIONS
DOWNHILL
Weaknesses:
CLIMBING
Bike Setup:
PROFLEX 450 LT
Bottom Line:FOR THE MONEY THAT I PAID FOR THIS BIKE IT IS ONE OF THE BEST I HAVE RIDDIN. I HAVE A 1998 PROFLEX 450 LT THAT I PAID $700.00 FOR AND PUT ABOUT 200 IN TO IT. IT HAS 5 INCHES OF TRAVEL FRONT AND REAR ALL MADE BY NOLEEN. NOLEEN HAS THEIR S--T TOGETHER. THE SUSPENSION IS A LITTLE MUCH FOR SOME TIGHT CROSS COUNTRY SECTIONS, BUT IN THE OPEN STUFF OR DOWNHILL SECTIONS THIS THING HANDLES GREAT. GREAT BIKE FOR THE MONEY. I GIVE IT 5 FLAMES.

Favorite Trail:
Mill Creek
Duration Product Used:
1 Year
Strengths:
easy to upgrade, not to heavy and nice frame design
Weaknesses:
Rear shock has to much play and not as much travel as need also a bad shock.
Similar Products Used:
trek oclv
Bike Setup:
I bought A 96' Pro-Flex Attack but did some changes first i replaced the stx derailleur with a Shimano LX, next i replaced the Roch Shox Quadra 5 with a Manitou X-Vert R dual crown, changed the dia-comp brakes to Shimano XT V-Brakes and Levers, then I replaced the Girvin stem with a Azonic O.R.C.
Bottom Line:overall its a good bike for someone who is just starting out, or for someone without a lot of money.

Date Reviewed: September 1, 1998
Bottom Line:

Well after only one week of owning this bike I've found that an update is necessary... First of all, the bike that I'm speaking about is the '97. Secondly, I think that the '98 and '99 are both too flashy for me. My bike is a plain metallic green... kinda hunter green. And it's perfect. I've riden mostly in and about the outskirts of town so far, and I am very pleased with it's performance... Especially when mounting and dismounting from sidewalks. The shifting is more smoothe that I expected, and the coasting is almost as fast as a medeocre road bike.I've had to add those extension thingyees for a little performance boost, and I the seat which was extremely uncomfortable had to go. It all ran me about $40.00 and I definitely think it was worth it.... Still a good deal....But not 5-star worthy.

Bottom Line:

I just tested this bile at the local store. It was the very last one, and they agreed to sell it to me for $763. Though I haven't actually taken it off roads, I tested it pretty well up and down the curbs of the sidewalks etc. I've also tested the Cannondales, which did feel a little more sure-footed, but were considerably more pricey. I think the Proflex Attack 455 would be a good deal for the money.

Bottom Line:

This review is for the Proflex Reptile............
This is my girlfriend's bike and it is hot. Bought it for 650$ and its a 97'
Although it has fr/rear elastomers this thing is a sofa...Im flying through the woods on a yellow/blue/green sofa and Im real happy with it. Im soaring through my local loop on my couch and Im climbing walls like a yellow goat. I am bombing impossible sections on my local coldspring hell trail and I am so comfortable and smooth.
Now my girlfriend weighs a buck o five so I'm not concerned about those elastomers what so ever. comfort and stability are key on this machine.
The brakes are shimano vbrake copies which is uncool, but they work real well, they just bend easy if the wheels are off and theyre hanging loose. The rims are WTB which impressed me alot. This bike needs to be retightened literally every 2 rides, things keep comin loose but Im aware of this and am constantly alert to this..The bike is still fairly new so this may be normal. It came with velocoraptors, that huge fork(which is a climber, i swear),comfortable saddle,esp5.0 carbon rear der.(which is smooth as butter, trust me its as buttery as my esp9.0),this bike is a real beast.....actually its a reptile...it climbs like a beast though and descends like a happy-bomb.would have bought the proflex attack, which was 100 and change cheaper but I admired the huge girvin fork on the Reptile as well as the wtb rim/tire setup, also the ESP is niiice. My girl loves this bike,,,its her first mountain bike and she loves it,,,little does she know that if her first bike was an aluminum hardtail she would never come back to the bike,,,she'd be too busy nursing her ass.

Bottom Line:

I have had the best time with this bike. I got this for 500 and have upgraded a bit and now it flys. The brakes are cheesy but I changed them to the XT V-brakes and changes the rear shifter to the Sachs extreme with a LX rear Derailluer and now this bike is AWESOME it can win!

Bottom Line:

I think this is a good bike I have one and it still rides great. It may not have the best fromt shock (RST). But I have replaced that and it rides like a dream. I am saving up to change the components to LX or XT now. It may not be a great bike to start but if you put some money into it its really a great bike.

I've seen tons of expansive and 'cause better designed and equiped bike on the market. But how can you beat a FS bike for under $500.00 ( got it on sale). The bike shop I got mind was put some good shit on it so I'm not a serious racer or anything but everytime I'm on that bike I feel like I can smoke everybody out there with it. I wasn't thinking about give rating on that bike when I see some looser gave one or two hot chili that pissed me off.

I ride the Pro-Flex 555 which I got at a '96 clearance sale at my local bike shop.it's got full STX/STX-RC and it rides great. i'll admit i don't know what the hell an ATF fork is, but the rear shock is sweet.for a clearance price of $500 you couldn't go wrong. 4 chili's because of the fork.

The bike looks brilliant and if I could afford one I'd buy one. At the moment I have a UNIVERSAL. It looks like it has ROCK SHOX suspension. The bike style is cool and the frame is really snazzy. I can't see very well but I think it has v brakes and 24 gears and toeclips.Overall the best bike jet !!!!!!!!!!!

Submitted by Mike Tobey a downhiller from Whitefish, MT
Date Reviewed: October 5, 1996
Bottom Line:

This bike is a really nice bike for the poor downhiller that can't spend 1500 on a good dual suspension. I would have given it a five but the front fork really sucks. The alivio components kind of put it down a little but those, like the fork they can always be replaced.

Submitted by Craig Atkinson a cross-country rider from Burlington, VT
Date Reviewed: October 1, 1996
Bottom Line:

I had the unfortunate experience of renting a 455 at a local ski area for some
downhilling recently. Aside from the componentry (Alievio) which is terrible, the
shocks on this bike -- while geostationary -- were truly atrocious. Don't waste your
money on this bike -- you will definately regret it.

Pro Flex should be ashmed to have their brand associated with this unbelieveably
poor quality bike.

Bottom Line:

The 455 is a pretty good bike. I've had it for a year or so and really have'nt had much problems with it. Just the usual alivo drawbacks. I think for anyone who wants full suspension cheap this bike is the way to go. The only thing that has let me down besides the alivo components is the no-namer shock in the front. It's gotta go.
