Strengths:    solid frame + components.

Weaknesses:    chain guide was crap and kept dinging my frame on suspension compression.

Bottom Line:
Kona stabs are one of the best DH bikes ever made i have had my 98 stab for 9 years and its had a beasting from day 1 i have litrally thrown it off cliffs getting pissed off and it has been perfect at the bottom!! excluding bent h.bars ,the components are top notch from new and match the bike perfectly, i never had jnr T's on mine from new i had stratos forks which are another story. i kept eating cranks on previous bikes but these race face never rounded off or snapped replaced linkage plates with goldtec 7" items and a dhx 5.0 with shivers up front 3 years ago and this bike frame has been excellent only ever let me down once when jumping down a set of steps about 4 foot high nothing big at all and the chainstays snapped on me which meant it was time for retirement for her, bring on the stab supreme.

Strengths:    the frame is a beast. the stock forks suck, but with upgrades the bikes crazy.

Weaknesses:    the linkage bolt right over the shock

Bottom Line:
crazy good bike. strongest and cheap for a dh bike. i did a huge twenty foot drop with a like 30 foot gap, and the bike held up like it was nothin. this bike is definately strong just need to make a few upgrades.get cranks and forks if your gunna go big.

Strengths:    Very tough older frame, good travel, race capable frame, good geometry, cheap (it is 5 years old)....

Weaknesses:    showing it's age now and looks a bit scruffy, rear disc mounts need bodging, could do with longer stroke shock...

Bottom Line:
I bought the frame a while back for about £200 and built it up from old bits and Ebay purchases, the build (as usual) could do with some finishing, and I may well change the forks and other bits in the future but the bike is awesome, especially considering the tiny amount of money I've spent on it, the shock has been revalved and works a treat althogh I've found the 6" setting suits me better than the 7" setting did (could be sorted with a firmer spring), I've used the bike for a couple of races so far and quite a bit of trails and jumping, it pedals really well and takes big and little hits with no trouble, a brilliant budget ride more than up to the task....

Strengths:    INDUSTRUCTABLE FRAME!. Absoultlty exellent to ride. this bike is essentially a Dh bike. The frame geomerty is made for a medium rider. Bike is easy to control on dh tracks and easy to control in the air.

Weaknesses:    Stock forks are sh*t. You need to put a better set of tripple clams on for sure.

Bottom Line:
This Bike is made for downhill. Its frame geomerty and all. As long as you put better triple clams on you can do anything. Ive baght a frount sprokette with two spoketes for ridding through bush and touring etc. I maily ride at the local dirt jumps , this bikes natural environment. I got the bike secon hand from a dh racer.

Bottom Line:
One year later..... Hey folks it's me again, i'm just giving you an update on how my bike's going after a year of use. Well frankly it couldn't be better, i've upgraded a few things, like new Mavic D521 Rims, Shorter Stem, Better Grips, and new Azonic Flat Pedals. It's pefectly set up for me right now and i love it, nothing has gone wrong with the bike at all, apart from a few minor problems, but overall it's still one kick ass bike. Cya's later.

Date Reviewed: July 1, 1998

Bottom Line:

THE Kona Stab is the sickest downhill bike for downhiller's on a budget on the face of the earth. It is a sweet overall package, my only hassle was setting up the chain-retention device effectively. Once dialled-beautiful & no prob's (e-mail me 4 details). The forks (Jr T's) are sweet, and thE frame ..oh my God.
The frame, derived from the Turner Burner DH frame, can be flown through rough as guts single track as if it's parent's were cheeta's(you get the idea), and it is just as stable at high speed work. The Vanilla R shock is beautiful, putting out 6 inches of the plushest travel. I've raced it for about 7 mths now and couldn't be happier. Every person who gets on it doesn't want to get off. My only other gripe is the sad ass front sKewer, which snap resulting in broken arms. BUY ONE(STAB, NOT SKEWER) ........... 10/5 .

My second stab at making a GoPro video.

Okay, it's been 4 days since I've had this camera. Here is my second attempt at glory. This footage is from today's afternoon ride. It was sunny and bright, but the trails were still a little wet and soggy from all the rain we've been getting lately. I added some angle and different POV's. ... Read More »

STAB recommendations

I'm looking to head up to STAB this week. Anyone have some recommendations on a good loop or must-ride trails? To give you an idea of my riding preferences, I'm much more of a fan of Kingdom Trails than Millstone. I like flow with some tech but not too much that I can't get a rhythm. Thanks!Read More »
