Repaced bars for wide d/h bars, so00 comfortable now. Ditched Time pedals for SPDs. | | Bottom Line: | It has pressed all the right buttons for me. I have always wanted a Klein and it has far exceeded my expectations. IT REALLY DOES MAKE YOU RIDE AND CLIMB FAR BETTER! I was asked by a drooling rider today if it were new and he was amazed that it is 9 years old. I have been riding MTB's since the 80's here in the UK and riding this is almost a religous experience!!!! Can't wait to get back on it back in the forest. Don't even think about buying a new made in China full suspension bling bling......get an old Klein and get back to real riding. Date Reviewed: September 22, 2004 | | Duration Product Used: | 1 Year | | Purchased At: | traded laptop for it | | Strengths: | Light,(mine is at 24 lbs.)good accelaration,flashy paint job a real attention getter,i dont know if this is the case everywhere but up here in norcal pre-trek kleins are a legend,so anyone who know about bikes goes "wow"and stuff like that.....sometimes "holy crap".like the internal cable routing but my local bikeshop mechanics all hate it...LOL. | | Weaknesses: | sucky forks(manatou sx),consantly have problems with the gears.every time i take it in t get fixed they dont stay fixed for long.we're talking about twice a month ive got to take this puppy in to get its gears adjusted.last time thay started acting up i just left them that way and untill i take it back in im going to have a 24 speed intead of a 27 speed...no biggy.i hate when people ask what year it is though becouse their all jazzed about it and then you tell em its a 96' (almost a decade old) and their big grin fades away and they just say "oh...." | | Similar Products Used: | GT i-drive team,cannandale super v raven 4000,spesialized big hit (none of these are similar products but thier what ive had. | | Bike Setup: | xt deore exept the xtr derailer,icon handlebar and stem,xtr cranks,manitou sx forks,some really light plastic saddle with VERY little padding(why its so light i suppose), irredssant fire paint job | | Bottom Line: | well, im ruff on bikes,and ive got to learn not to be ruff on this one becouse it just cant hang.but if your only going to cross country than it kicks ass.its real light stock and not too expensive to make even lighter.i got my GT I-Drive Team stolen out the back of my truck at the local Shasta Lemurian Annual bike race,and would still be mobbing that if i had it or could afford a new one.my i-drive was about 20.5 pounds and thats a stock full suspension. i split my carbon fiber cannondale superraven right down the center seam using it as a downhill/dirtjumper....and then somone stole my spesialized big hit right out of my garage.so all in all 2 badass bikes got stolen,and one got broke.i had to trade my laptop to my freind for this bike.he wasnt even a mountain biker,he just mobbed it around on the road.i hope nothing happens to this bike or im s.o.l. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Internal cabling unique | | Weaknesses: | rear dropouts, something to get used too. non standard sizes expect to have to special order parts. You just cant roll into a bike shop and start buying crap | | Similar Products Used: | This is my first and only mountain bike I used to ride road bikes and switched over. road bikes are boring. | | Bike Setup: | Adroiot pro night storm. full xtr. mavic cross ride wheelset with xtr skewers, thompson seatpost, italia gel saddle, monkey lite handle bars, mantinu elite, mc3 threadless stem. velociraptor tires. 747 clipless pedals | | Bottom Line: | This is a very light hard tail makes for an excellent climber, Great for cross country and switch backs. As with any hard tail even with great front suspension you will take a beating on those extra bumby, rocky, rutted, courses. If you know you want a hard tail I cant see how there is a better bike on the market. Unfortunate you are seeing less and less higher end hard tails out there these days. Thompson Elite Seatpost, Klein integrated H-bar and stem, some cheap goofy looking seat,(old school Tri-shock) Bar ends are for woosies! (j/k) | | Bottom Line: | This is the last of the great Aluminum Hardtails. Made from a special blend of aluminum alloy, and specifically designed to be ultra stiff, without breaking your back. Beutifully made, the mc2 bar/stem, shapely chainstays, big headset and beutiful tough paint. A bike with real character! Probably dirt cheap second hand in good nick. | | Weaknesses: | designed for cantilever brakes, adapter needed for v-brakes. Oversized headset makes changing forks a bugger. Try reset-racing.de who make headsets and threadless B/B for these old kleins, allowing 1 1/8 forks to be used. Once a Klein Rider, always a Klein Rider. The geometry cannot be matched by another company, nor can the build quality. Stiff and responsive, the frame climbs like a pissed off mountain goat, and destroys fast, tight singletrack with reckless abandon. I just wish they still made them like this. | | Weaknesses: | Mission control setup limits fork choices since they don't make any 1 1/4 inch forks anymore, and get a comfy saddle, there is no forgiveness in this frame. Additionally, the long top tube can be uncomfortable on long distance rides. | | Similar Products Used: | Four different Scott Bikes, and rode my buddies '98 attitude race. Not as nice... | | Bike Setup: | '97 Klein Attitude w/ Mission Control, 8 spd XT-v, Bontrager Race Wheelset, '97 judy XC with Total Air upgrade. | | Bottom Line: | Gary Still makes great bikes, but they won't ever be the same as they used to. The Attitude has lost its allure in the market due to the crappy components they put on the frames these days. If you're serious about hardtail bikes, and want the best setup out there, buy the frame alone, and have the rest built with the parts you want.
