The Rock Shox Jett is terrible, upgrading. components are basic. Derailer acts funny sometimes. | | Bike Setup: | Mostly stock, a few litte things. Then again this is my communting and beater bike. | | Bottom Line: | I have had the GT for over 5 years and it has held up very well. The frame is the best part of this bike. Been riding it for 8 years now, nothing bad to say about it. Have had to tighten most components, headset busted replaced with an FSA Pig. Seat a POS replaced it right when I got, along with the pedals, naturally. Will replace shock pretty soon, maybe with a Manitou R7, probably bringing weight down to ~23. Might also replace Deore stock components with old XT and wheelset from my lazy friends 98 Trek Singletrack 970. $400.00 | | Purchased At: | Tailwind Bicycle Shop | | Strengths: | A great frame design and I upgraded it to a good extent. I didn't like the Rock Shox and they leaked so i replaced them. (I bought the bike used and rebuilt it) It is a little heavy but that's all the more to make me stronger. Some components left stock: Handlebars, crank, rear hub, lower headset portion, and seatpost. | | Weaknesses: | A little heavy and the bottom bracket is making a little noise (as expected). | | Similar Products Used: | Cannondale F series, Diamondback Response Comp, Gary Fisher Marlin, Gary Fisher Opie, and I've worked on and rode several others. | | Bike Setup: | Check my profile for my current bike setup. | | Bottom Line: | This bike is excellent if you want to be a better cyclist because the weight helps for training, it is also extremely strong and I have really put it to the test as to what a hardtail can do, it exceeds my hardtail expectations, and it continues to. While headed down I-10 the GT flew off my roof rack (@ 70 mph) and into the center lane of traffic. It was hit a couple of times before the police could shut down traffic to get it out of the way. I have had this bike since '99 (almost 4 years) and haven't had any frame or crank issues. The shifters and deraileurs still work well and I've never changed the Judy's. I've raced this bike for quite some time now. | | Weaknesses: | Seems to be a little heavey but all of that can be remedied. It's a noisy downhiller and the stock seat is a POS. The size I got has pedals that are sometimes a little too close to the rock, but I manage. | | Bottom Line: | If you're new to mountain biking then this is a great starter bike. You can probably pick one up used for around $200 or less today depending on where you look. $475.00 | | Purchased At: | Griffen Cycles, Bethesda, MD | | Strengths: | Reliable, battle tested, needs minimal maintainence...just the basics. I've never had to walk it back in, it always brings me home.
| | Weaknesses: | It certainly isn't the lightest bike, but not the heaviest either. Seat was uncomfortable, so I replaced it with anatomically correct and added a thud buster. What a difference! Rock guard didn't last long at all. | | Similar Products Used: | GT's | | Bike Setup: | Changes: anatomically correct saddle (with male channel), thudbuster seat post, SPD pedals, replaced straight bar with riser bar, added bar ends, but cut them down to pegs. | | Bottom Line: | I love this bike...I've considered getting a new bike from time to time, but then decided just to upgrade different components. I guess the only thing that might make me trade it in would be if I wanted to upgrade to disc brakes and full suspension, but to be quite honest, the thud buster works great and I haven't really had any performace problems with the stock brakes. This bike is really low maintancence! I hose it down after each ride and get it tuned up every 6 months. Never had a flat, gears are fine. Some minimal adjustments to the brake lines. RS Judy do great! I consider myself an intermediate rider and this bike has progressed as I have. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

It handles better than more expensive hardtails and looks nicer(2000 Rebound). Sure the co. is going down, but the bike is so much better than its $500 price. It weighs about 24# and climbs great. $480.00 | | Purchased At: | unknown bike shop in Sugarland TX | | Strengths: | Affordable bike for an entry-level rider worth minor upgrades as you progress to an intermediate rider. | | Weaknesses: | No real weaknesses for the moderately priced bike, other that the seat that was ripped off after a few rides because it was too hard. It could use upgraded components, but you always get what you pay for. The bike takes a beating and keeps on rolling. | | Similar Products Used: | N/A First Mountain bike | | Bike Setup: | OEM except for the Senas seat and Shimano 747 pedals | | Bottom Line: | My 98 GT rebound has been an excellent bike for the past two years. I've ridden the "G-ride" through streams, hair ball down hills, steep ascends, and I've been known to fly over the handle bar once or twice because I tend to push the bike past it's limits. It has withstood the test of times and has lots of beauty marks to prove it. I'm not ready to give it up yet, but I've never ridden a full suspension bike and I'm dying to try one out soon. Who knows, I may keep the full suspension as backup and upgrade the GT later. In summary, if you're looking for a high end beginner bike to intermediate; I would recommend this bike with a few upgrades. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

| | Weaknesses: | The seat is crampy | | Bike Setup: | As it is | | Bottom Line: | A few months ago, I had an accident that involved me and my good-old bicycle. As it will be for many bicycles out there, it withstood the impact of a stupid rider's 40-50 mph downhill entry into a ditch; however, my helmet's visor and my finger did not. This bike was bought as a 1999 model, and have stood up against test of time very well. I am very fond of my bicycle as to buy a Thule bike rack for it. The Backwoods Rocks! The Jett XC fork is better than the jett c. This bike is fat, but not as fast as fast as the Rebound. I likethe components on the Backwoods better than on the Rebound. But over all the Rebound and The Backwoods are ver closely related. So, the bpttom line is, If you get the Rebound, so be it. Its reall a good bike. I f you get the Backwoods, you get a better shock, and a better headset and crank. Other than that All GT bikes are supreme! | | Weaknesses: | The Rebound? None. The Backwoods? Better than none. | | Similar Products Used: | none | | Bike Setup: | Jett XC | | Bottom Line: | Wheather you get the Rebound or the Bakwoods they both are outstanding bikes. I am a first time mountain biker, and i have to say i just bought the rebound for an incredible $449.00. When i first walked in the bike shop the first bike a saw was the rebound, well it was love at first sight, at first i thought the back was one of those $3,000 models but when the salesman told me the price i had to get it, i used it on several roads around here and its GREAT!!! | Overall Rating: |

After purchasing a bike for my son for his birthday the shop guys talked me into getting one for me. My fat 38 year old butt has been riding a GT Rebound for the past year and a half and is now 33 pounds lighter and much happier. Thank you GT. The rebound still works like new after literly thousands of miles! | Overall Rating: |

'99 Rebound! Lots of upgrades from the '98 model. Just the aluminum frame seems worth $350! When I bought the bike last week for $475, it seemed too good to be true. After reading all the comments here, I'm totally convinced that it is buy made in heaven!!! I took it out single-tracking this weekend at it performed great. Can't wait till next time. | Overall Rating: |

i just bought the 99 Rebound two weeks ago, i haven't taken it to its extremes yet but havea been rough with it. THIS BIKE ROCKS i got mine for $500!!!!! great frame, light. it even has the new Rock Shock Jetts on it they are great, i like to go for long rides so i traded in the seat and got the GT super soft i like that better although when i start to ride in the winter i might goo w/ a smaller seat (don't ask why i don't even understand) this is a must get!!!! for 500 bucks you usally couldn't even get a good Alluminum frame but this has a great frame, if i didn't know the price i would say it would cost about 750- $800. If your just starting get this, if you have been riding your whole life get this. IT'S A DEAL!!!!! 100 FLAMING CHILIES IS NOT ENOUGH!!!!!!!! | Overall Rating: |

I have loved my Rebound since I bought it. Very comfortable ride for a great price. Mine came equiped with shimono wheels, brakes, cassette and more for only $540.00. Also, mine had rock shox INDY already on mine. I have had it for a week or so, and no problems at all. This is a great bike for someone with a resonable budget. I have recieved what I payed for. Five stars isnt nearly enough! | Overall Rating: |

I purchased a 98 GT Rebound in July and it was stolen 2 weeks later! Since then I have been waiting to purchase the 99 model. This one will be incredibly locked up. However, it was the best bike I ever rode. I called 6 bike shops to see if they had anything comparable. Not one bike shop had a comparable bike even for an extra $100.00. I can't wwait till the 99 model ships to a local shop. Maybe I can get one mail order. If so and you know of a place, email me. | Overall Rating: |

I had just purchased a '99 GT Rebound.. Light alluminum frame, high powered brakes, rapid-fire shifting, nice suspension, 24 speed, cool color, GREAT BIKE... For $499, I think it compares to or is better than the more expensive 98' GT Backwoods or Richochet and is a way better deal..I give it 5 stars for a bike that is less than half a grand... | Overall Rating: |

Just wanted to put in another endorsement for the 98 Rebound. At $429 out the door, I've been sure it was money well spent. Hardware is great, though the seat might be switched soon (come with a WTB SST). Just bought it in June, and have put about 500 miles on it, with no problems. Very light for a cromoly, and stands up well to abuse. | Overall Rating: |

I bought a 98 Rebound this spring and it is great. I upgraded the derailers to lx and xt and bought wellgo clipless pedals that rule. I have had no major problems. Its a great bike for a beginner and the price was right ($450 out the door). I would have given it 5, but I needed to purchase extras to get the bike running perfect! | Overall Rating: |

I just got the 98 model about a few months ago. Since then I have been on many trails and this is one sweet bike. I love this thing so much. It has all of the different componets that I need. It is also very light. I got it fo $500, and it sure is worth the money to me. After having shopped the different bike shops and available bikes in the area, I chose to go with the Rebound. I purchased 2 at $459 apiece, about the lowest price I found around here. Having tried Trek (800 series), Schwinn (98 Mesa GSX), Raleigh (M80-M60), Kona(LavaDome), and Giant (Iguana SE), I found the GT Rebound to be the best ride/value for my money. Handling, performance, and styling are all tops. The jury is still out on the Rock Shox Indy S forks... I'm about 200lbs and haven't had problems with them yet. The only problem I had, and this isn't GT's fault, is that I bought a nice Saris rear bike rack for my 2 bikes- the triple triangle design made it a little more difficult for me to get the bikes on the rack securely... I'll deal. | Overall Rating: |

I bought this bike last december, it came with a quad 5 (which i was dissapionted with but you cant get everything you want) I am pleased with the shimano rapidfires, but they take a while to get used to. Overall a suprisingly strong, relaible bike for the money (but try and get a 98 or late 97 with the Indy istead of the quad) | Overall Rating: |

This is an excellent bike for the money. I paid $470. I can't believe a cromoly frame can be this light for this price. It's so nimble and agile. The triple triangle design makes it stiff with the plush ride of cromoly at the same time. If you have $600 dollars to spend on a bike, save some money and get a GT Rebound. | Overall Rating: |

The GT Rebound is exeptionally light for a chrome-molly frame, the wide tubes add to the great handling as well as good looks. Equiped with Shimano stx cassette and gear system, acompanied by Avid ad 1 ol brakes , and Rock Shox indy s front suspension fork this bike is has awesome single track abilities especially for its price range ( $ 460- $600 ) . Personally I replaced the shimano rapid fire gear shifting system, for my grip shift preference, as well as replaced the braking system from shimano alivio to the Avid, which I find to be far superior in braking power and reliability, a far more sensitive system. The triple triangle frame design offers more stability and absorption as to the comparable trek 850, and 900 series bikes. | Overall Rating: |
