Submitted by deathshead a Cross Country Rider from Arcata, CA
Date Reviewed: July 15, 2009
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:bomb-proof old-school chrome-moly construction.
Weaknesses:weight of the frame (see product strengths above). Not compatible with modern braking systems.
Similar Products Used:Diamond Back, Cannondale, Gary Fisher
Bike Setup:1989 18" GT Avalanche
Bottom Line:Pretty much wore and tore all of the original components, which have been replaced several times over. I think the only original parts still remaining are the frame, forks and seat post. Crashed it several times. It has been ridden on pavement, fire roads, mud and sand for nearly 20 years. I went bike shopping last month. Nothing rode as solid as the old Avalanche. Ended up buying new tires and drivetrain parts for her instead. Best bike ever.

Made it mine, and love everything about it. exept no disc brake mount on the frame. but oh well, canti brakes are working just fine for me. performs as good as the newest 08 bikes from cannondale, fisher, ext. glad i found this old jem.

Submitted by Q a Cross Country Rider from Northern Virginia
Date Reviewed: October 13, 2007
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1100.00
Purchased At:a bike shop that went belly up
Strengths:Tough, workhorse of a frame; came w/ good mix of parts
Weaknesses:Stock Kore Lite stem (single bolt clamp design) couldn't be used with risers; not made anymore...at least not like it was in the '90s
Bottom Line:Ah, the good ol' days, when GTs were made in the U.S., came stock with good components, and the local shop wasn't a national chain. Oh well, this frame delivers, time and time again. I replaced almost everything on it due to wear and tear (including the derailleur hangar, and almost all the hardware), or just for want of something better (the flatbar only stem, rigid fork). Some of the old parts (or at least their brands) live on in upgrades -- folding VelociRaptors, Kore Elite stem, etc. The frame continues to this day, abeit with lots of scratches, scrapes, dings, and a few dents. Sometimes I really wish it was painted, and I guess it's kind of heavy, but if it was lighter would I still be riding it?

Strengths:Generally robust bike
Weaknesses:Seat retaining bolt
Similar Products Used:N/A
Bike Setup:Avalance 2.0 Disc
Bottom Line:Until this weekend, I cannot deny that I was very happy with my purchase.
However this sunday, while returning home after a gentle off road session, I was sitting upright on the seat peddling with one hand resting lightly on the handlebars when there was a loud sound followed by me being instantly deposited on the ground behind the bike resulting in a broken wrist. The bolt retaining the seat had sheared.
I would caution others to review this bolt since it is the only one retaining the seat.

Date Reviewed: October 5, 2006
Favorite Trail:Oleta, Markham, Quiet Waters
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1100.00
Purchased At:Can't Remember
Strengths:The frame arrangement and stiffness.
Weaknesses:None, nada, x-ney, negative.
Similar Products Used:Zaskar
Bike Setup:Race face headset& seat post, all XTR components exept for rear brake, Crossmaxx w/1.95 IRC tubbed, wtb Ti seat, scott grips, teflon lined cables, 100mm dual-air race rockshox, (still ride the 8 Gear cog not the 9 gear XTR) but made of light metal. The only original thing in this bike is the frame.....I would not trade it for anything else short of another Avalanche frame...
Bottom Line:This bike is probably the best performing bike I have ridden... and I have ridden many. I no longer race but since 1997 to 2001 it was my racing partner. I have placed 16 overall in NORBA Florida Ford series races and always used this frame... Spent lotsa mony on it and would do it all over again. THIS GT WAS MADE WHEN GT WAS GT. MADE IN THE USA. UNLIKE THE CURRENT FOEIGN MADE GTs WHICH SUCK AND ARE PURCHASED AT YOUR LOCAL SAMS CLUB....WHAT AN INSULT...

Submitted by BigStonz a from Swain,NY
Date Reviewed: January 3, 2003
Favorite Trail:Swain Ski Area trails
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:I really learned to ride on this bike. Climbs great, take alot of abuse without blinking. I recently bought a K2 razorback (which I also love), but I still like to take take the Avalanche out and beat the crap out of it.
Weaknesses:Mounts for disc brakes would be nice, but who expects that on a 1998(?) frame.
Similar Products Used:K2 Razorback (similar??, 5x more expensive!!)
Bike Setup:The original frame and whatever parts get handed down from the K2
Bottom Line:Indestructable all around hardtail. I was the 2nd owner (it was the LBS's owner's personal bike-who also beat the crap out of it) and in 3 years of hard climbing, tech downhilling, and biblical crashing the frame is as good as new. And to think I almost sold it to help pay for new bike...now IT'S NOT FOR SALE.

Favorite Trail:Mt Majura, Canberra
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $400.00
Purchased At:Londsdale St Cyclery, Canberra
Strengths:Strong frame, takes plenty of urban punishment without a whimper. Lasted me ten years, and the guy before me wasn't gentle, I don't think...
Weaknesses:That said, broke a rear dropout a few years ago... difficult to upgrade single parts due to frame geometry, you end up replacing everything the dud part is connected to. Cheesy 1980's paint job.
Similar Products Used:GT Pantera '97
Bike Setup:1989 (yes,1989) CroMo frame, last of the fully Japanese GT frames, bought second hand in Aus in 1993 for $800. Came with Suntour stuff and a Girvin flexstem. The only stuff still on there other than the frame are the saddle and the bloody indestructible Mavic front rim. Now have a mix of XT and LX componentry, running Michelin WildGripper City and Hutchie Top Slicks. Fave bit are these huge brake levers, for the full hand. Very OTT. Mid range Shimano SPDs.
Bottom Line:This was my first real bike, and I remember going to the shop where it was being sold in my home town of Canberra almost every day. This was in '93 when mountain biking was just taking off in a big way, and my choices were this somwhat battered second hand GT Avo or a Diamond Back Ascent. I am thankful to this day that I chose the Avo. I discovered fairly quickly that I don't have the reflexes for MTB riding, a few expensive crashes taught me that! So I now have it set up as a commuter machine, or "bikepath basher", as the mechanic at my bike shop called it. Lots of nice high gears and skinny slicks and it really moves, despite being heavy and me making no concessions to saving weight

It's even followed me over in a bike box to England where I currently use it in bike friendly Cambridge, cycling 70+ miles a week commuting to and from work. I doubt I could have bought a bike of similar quality here for what I would have saved had I not brought it over. There's nothing at all wrong with the frame (as far as I know) save my broken dropout a few years ago. It will last as long as my bank balance can afford putting new componentry on it every few years. I like to compare it (favourably, of course) to the Millenium Falcon - it doesn't look very pretty, but I always shell out a little extra to get if not the best componentry then the second best, and it's capable of some pretty slick moves should I put my foot down

A little reminiscence there, perhaps, but my Avo has been a part of my life for the last ten years and I think you could expect the same sort of reliability that I have experienced since I bought it, should you invest in one of these superb GT frames. Okay, commuting was never what it was designed for, but if you don't want to stress over what dropping off gutters and going down stairs etc is doing to your frame, go for the GT brand

Strengths:BOMBPROOF frameset! I have tried to break this frame. I only was able to dent it once and that was coming off a large rock where the frame under all my weight actually hit and scraped across the rock!
Weaknesses:a LITTLE heavy, I hate people that knock a frame like this and say it is oh so heavy, these people are just WEAK!
Similar Products Used:GT Zaskar, Cannondale Killer V9000
Bike Setup:Full XTR with 517 rims, Panaracer Fire XC 2.1's, Titec post, WTB seat, Easton bars. Very SWEET RIDE
Bottom Line:If you want to build a bombproof XC rig for a great price find one of the older Avalanche frames, they will not die.

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1000.00
Strengths:I own both Avalanches: In 1989 I got my first one made of TANGE Prestige-Steel, now I have the newest alloy-version, and BOTH are the best frames I ever saw and rode. Stiff and heavy, yes, but whatever you do (and I´ve done a lot), you will NEVER (!!!!!) brake the frame. There´s only one thing that´s better than owning a GT: Owning two GTs!
Weaknesses:There aren´t any, except the weight. But be honest: Who cares?
Similar Products Used:Germany´s VOTEC-bikes are okay.
Bike Setup:Not the newest, far from the lightest: Rock Shox, Magura Race-Line, Deore XT II - Shifter (yes, still the best), Onza Porcupine-tires in white, Onza barends, XT II - crankset, Flite Titanium etc.. Don´t use expensive but weak parts. Better stay heavy, these parts won´t brake.
Bottom Line:If god was a biker - he proudly would ride to hell with his GT. Doesn´t GT stand for "God´s Touch"?

Strengths:Bulletproof frame that handles like a jet fighter on the singletrack. I ride this thing through the worst rock gardens, haul ass down the downhills, and have crashed pretty damn hard. Other than a few dings, this frame looks as solid as ever after 5 (!) years of hardcore abuse. If you want to save money, buy yourself a cheap frame that breaks. If you want a rig to dust your friends with, buy an avalanche. It's worth it. Some people say this frame is a bit heavy. Considering how burly it is, this frame is light.
Weaknesses:This frame is friggin addictive !!!!!!!!!!!
Bike Setup:Cook Bros F cranks,Bontrager Mustang rims, XT drivetrain, Avid Archrival Brakes, CT2 post, Selle Flite Ti,
Weight: 24 pounds.
Bottom Line:Don't be fooled by people who complain about this frame because they got burned on some components. Components brake, and they always will. This frame, however, LASTS.
It simply hauls ass and corners like a razor blade.
I'll never give this frame away.

Bike Setup:91' Gt Avalanche. All orginal equipment minus front derailer.
Bottom Line:I purchased this bike 10 years ago for transportation and an occasional weekend trip. Aside from several new sets of tires and a bent up front derailer, I have never, EVER had problem one with this bike. I'm not sure how many '91 Avalanches there are out there, but I garantee that those that own them say the same thing. This is a phenomenal bike. I may not be the most aggressive trail hound, but I can attest to the longevity of the product. If I were to purchase another MB, there is no question it would be an Avalanche.

Favorite Trail:Holzinger
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:Indestructible frame. Fast, fast, fast. Great handling bike. Tossable. Feels as good in the air as it does on the trail. Good climber, great in the technical and fast and stable on the downhills.
Weaknesses:LX stuff. Could be lighter. Had to get rid of that rock hard WTB seat for a flite. Could have had stronger, lighter wheelset.
Similar Products Used:Old bike was a GT Tequesta. Have spent time on Specialized Stumpjumpers and S-works, FSR's. Trek 8900. GT Zaskar.
Bike Setup:Had to replace most everything because of abuse. JUDY XC fork. Ritchy pedals. New grips. Selle Italia Flite seat. Two new wheelsets. Put Ritchy Speedmax tires on it.
Bottom Line:Best bike I have ever ridden. I race this bike on the weekends. During the week, it is my trail riding/freeride bike. I ride extremely hard and have to constantly replace my parts. I am on my third set of wheels. I have broken two of the judy forks. Warranty has replaced them both. Broke my flite seat, broke seatpost, broke the LX cranks, broke everything on the drive-train. Throughout it all, the bike handles like a dream. I wish it was a little lighter, but nothing else rides like it. It was a great bike for the price, the frame is just a stiff and strong as the day I bought it. I wish GT still had an Avalanche LE. I guess I'll have to buy a Zaskar next if I want the killer freeride bike I can still race.

I paid $850 for a $1,200 bike that came w/a judy xc, soon to be changed for a SID, and worthless VP pedals that I ditched for the SPD's. Bike Setup:
Set up for Observed Trials. Nuke proof stem, Azonic double wall riser bar, FSA cranks, lx hubs laced to Rhyno lites, xt V's.
Bottom Line:This frame is indestructable. '96 frame, built up as a trials bike. Has held up to 3+ years of trials abuse--5 foot drops, constant bashing, and I weigh 205. I even bent the chromo rigid forks that came with it, but the frame is still in good shape. If it can hold up to this abuse, you'll never break one riding XC!

Bottom Line:WHAT A GREAT BIKE, TO THINK I WAS THINKING OF SELLING IT!!! BUT INSTEAD I ADDED A FEW UPGRADES TO MY LIKING. NEEDED THE CARAMBA SMOOTH OPERATOR ON REAR XT BRAKE BECAUSE MY HEEL KEPT CLIPPING THE XT ELBOW. THE CHEAP KALLOY RISER BAR MAKES STEERING MORE PREDICTABLE THAN THE FLAT BAR IT CAME WITH, NOT AS QUICK TURNING. THE REAR BRAKE FELT IT HAD TOO MUCH FLEX, SO I PUT ON AN IONIC BRAKE ARCH & IMPROVED BRAKING. DESCENT WEIGHT AT 26lbs. BUT THE FRAME IS A USA MADE 6061 ALUM. I'LL MINUS 1 CHILI FOR STIFFNESS.

I own a '98 LE, great bike. The WTB seat is like sitting on a mounted river rock though. This bike is definitely a single-tracker and general all purpose. I agree with the other reviews about its tendency to get squimish at high speed, 35mph and up, but its handling on moderately fast tight single track is awesome. After 10 months and a gnarly holiday with luggage in the French Pyrenees the rims showed some haircracks, what was covered by the warranty. This fork is much superior to the Judy sl they offered on the Avalanche LE. It is a good base to start with for upgrages in the future. The 1999 avalanche is better speced than the 1998 but still has the best fork in the market(Z2 bomber) for the same price as the 1998.

The 97' GT Avalanche LE is one hell of a bike for the price. The frame (even though made in taiwan) is very stiff and is upgradeable to the moon. Some of the nicest welds I've seen on aluminum comes from GT. This bike was developed to be tortured! Haven't had no problems with it so far. I replaced the stock Judy XC with a Bomber Z2 BAM and made the ride even more enjoyable. For the 1400 i spent, it was worth every penny. The frame is one that I will definately keep. Kudos to GT and their ingenuity to the sport of Mountain Biking.

I have own a GT Avalanche Le for a year before I change to the Zaskar.
I love the looks of the bike a lot, it is a fast bike to ride and the
frame is also very strong. with a overlised downtude, the bike look way
too cool!!! However I found out that there is problem in my bike, the
mechanic from the bike shop did not fix the BB properly and therefore
caused the frame to lost treads. I very angry b'cause I bought the bike
with my savings. However I force to change my frame due some other
reasons like playing trials, therefore I bought a 14.5 Zaskar instead
of my 16. I love my new bike a lot. It is black in colour and having
orange stickers on it. However it isn't as light as what I expected!
It is as heavy as my Avalanche Le. Handling is the same! But only the
frame is more stiffer, the weldings are also much more neater than the
Taiwan-made frame. That why I very satisfied with the money I spent.
For guys out there who can't afford a Zaskar, sticks to the Avalanche Le
it worth the value. 5 chillis for GT!

Maybe this review doesn't pertain to most of you, but I'm writing it anyway. I am a bike messenger in Chicago, and when my track bike's drivetrain started clogging with road sludge and it's wheels wouldn't stay true my local bike shop offered me a very reasonable trade in price (about $450 after trade in without suspension fork) with a GT CroMo rigid fork and Avocet Cross K road slicks with Kevlar beads. I have ridden my bike up and down stairs, hopped badly up thousands of curbs and been hit by a car twice, and my GT is still running in perfect order. The only time I even had to true the wheels was after I used my bike to take out a taxicab door at speed. The door was a wash, and I could see where the bike ploughed through the panels, but I upon inspection I could not even find where the bike hit. Not a scratch, literally. Maybe it's slow, as all mountain bikes have to be, but I like the reliability and completely bombproof qualities of this bike. I do not like the harsh ride of the aluminum frame on the road, and this will be the last aluminum bike I own, but I suppose you high speed mountain bikers don't really give a shit about road vibration. I also had problems with my drivetrain skipping when it was clogged with ice and road scum, but maybe that's the price of having more than one gear. Oh well. Great bike.

The bike instills confidence. So much so, I am entering my first race this weekend. I have upgraded to Time ATAC pedals, Ride On Gore cable and Kool Stop brake pads on my rear brake and a Bontrager seat. The originals were o.k., except for the brake pads (LX V-brake originals), I just feel the upgrades were needed to enhance the bike's performance. I've had my new 97 Avalanche LE for only about a week now. But, I can give it a

This has not happend to me. But, I can see that it would be easier to to an endo on this bike than the others I've ridden. I do seem to get thrown forward more for some reason if I'm not paying attention. I also notice that the front wheel sometimes will slide out of control more than other bikes when I hit something off the side of the wheel. I'm not sure exactly why this is, but it's not a problem as long as you are aware of it. The bike will take corners very tightly, you just have to drop the handlebar a bit and it's in the corner. I like its responsiveness. The componets are excellent, I really have not had any problem getting used to the clipless pedals (it was my first time using them). The Shimano 535's are great. Now I'm sorry I didn't switch to these a long time ago. I also really like the XT V-brakes and XT shifting. The only thing I'm changing on the bike are the seatpost, seatpost clamp, and chain. I'm using a Thompson Elte post and Sach's M-55 chain. I highly recommend this bike! I'm giving it four stars because it should have been outfitted with a better seatpost and clamp (which they did improve on their 98 model).

I just got a GT avalanche on sale for $699.00!
I think it is a great bike for an even better price.
Although I do want to upgrade to a good set of avid or XT V-Brakes , and a better front shock (It has a Quadra 21R)
I give it the full five stars

I just bought a 98 Avalanche LE, and this bike is an awsome chioce for the money. It has Judy SL,XT (except for rear hub and cranks), Shimino 535 Pedals, and a good mix of other name brand componets. It is a very fast ride (when you pedal it jumps), but seems to be a little twitchy at speed ( maybe me though). I highly recommend this bike if you want the most for your money.

This bike rocks!
It's from GT~!
All GT frames (with the Triple Triangle) are very stiff and doubly reinforced.
True, GT may be a bit tough on the wallet, but then you ARE paying for a really quality product. GT has built a reputation for good quality bikes and have done very well in ALL forms of BMXing and Mountain Biking.

I own my Avalanche for about one and a half year and I still love it.
I wanted to have the Zaskar first but when I was riding the Avalanche I decided to save some money and get a bike that is as strong as a Zaskar and just weighs a little bit more. The components (LX/XT, GT fork) are not too bad, but for serious riding I had to buy a '97 Manitou SX and some other parts (Avid V-brake--outperformes anything from Shimano)but the frame definitively KICKS ASS!!!--Superstiff and looks damn smooth.
This bike is good for almost any riding style becouse of its awesome handling.
I would highly recommend this bike to anyone who likes hard riding and can't afford a Zaskar.

This bike's got a nice frame for the price. The bike is a little heavy tough. The
bike may not give you the best components for the price (in Norway the bike
cost the same as Kona Kula (XTR/XT, Bomber Z2 & Easton frame) and
American Eagle Durango (The bike used by the pro-team, if I should get a new bike now, this one would be at the top of my list), (SRAM ESP9.0SL, Manitou SX-Ti
& Easton frame).

I bought the Avalanche LE in February 96. I've raced it for two seasons and loved every minute I was on it. In fact after destroying everypart except the crank arms(lx) and the frame, the new upgrades I put on it dropped its weight under 24 lbs. It's been a hell of a bike, and I'm sad to say I just sold it to my brother in law, but don't frown the only reason I parted with it was for my current Ventana F/S. If you want a sweet hard tail and you have a budget you can't go wrong with the Avalanche.

I got the avalache le in June. I raced it and rode it hard all summer, all I ever had to do was some occasional truing of the wheel. the components on this bike are excellent especially for the price. I believe this is the best bike for an aspiring racer for less than $1500. The only complaint is with the bottom bracket, it creaked after about a month and it is heavy. I will be upgrading the
bb, cranks, and wheels before next season.

I bought my Avalanche RS a month ago. This bike is sweet and incredibly stiff in the rear. I have ridden mine 100 miles (about 20 off road,) and the only maintnance its needed was a couple turns of a spoke wrench. What other LX, XT bike can you get for $929. Everything does its works flawlessly. The only thing bad abou this bike are the Velorapters especialy the front.

Best value on the market in the 1000 to 1500 range, I Recomend getting the LE version with the Judy XC. but as the parts wear out if you bought the reg avalanch upgrade components to XT you cant go wrong with any of the avalanches.
