Strengths:    EXCELLENT FRAME GEOMETRY FOR SINGLE TRACK RIDING

Weaknesses:    WHEEL BASE IS A LITTLE SHORT, BUT NOT A BIG DEAL.

Bottom Line:
I LOVE THIS BIKE. I'VE HAD TWO FULL SUSPENSION BIKES IN THE PAST AND WOULD PICK THIS HARD TAIL OVER A FULL SUSPENSION ANY DAY OF THE WEEK. THIS BIKE WAS GIVEN TO ME BY MY MOTHER-IN-LAW WHO PICKED IT UP IN THE NEWS PAPER FOR $200.00. SHE NEVER USED THE BIKE, SO SHE GAVE IT TO ME. WHEN I GOT THE BIKE IT WAS COMPLETLY RIGID AND STOCK. THE UP GRADES WERE WELL WORTH THE MONEY. I STRIPPED THE COMPONENTS OFF MY OLD TREK Y3 AND PUT THEM ON THE MONTARE. I COULDNT BE MORE HAPPIER. KEEP IN MIND THIS BIKE IS PART OF GARRY FISHERS EVOLUTION SERIES BIKES, SO THE HEAD TUBE IS 1 1/4. IF YOU WANT TO FEEL LIKE A WILD DEER RUNNING THROUGH YOUR LOCAL TRAILS I HIGHLY RECOMEND THE MONTARE.

Strengths:    Solid, lightweight frame.

Bottom Line:
I bought this one back in 1997 on clearance from 96 and I've been riding it ever since. It's truly a great bike. I usually ride fast/technical new england singletrack but recently took it with me out to Moab. Out there I definitely wished it was a dual suspension but it held up well to everything I subjected it to. It's starting to get a bit old now so I've been replacing things like wheelsets, my fork, and my crankset is starting to go - but what can you expect from a 6 year old bike? Even if I pick up a dual I'll probably keep this bad boy around for bombing the trails.

Bottom Line:

I've ridden singletrack across the country on this ride, and it is pretty sweet for the money. I bought a '96 at $950 when it was new, and it came with LX/STX, Sugino, R/S Quadra 21 for components. I've added XT V-brakes since and am looking for some other parts upgrades, but overall, this bike is great. Any other ideas out there?
