Date Reviewed: January 8, 2003
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $500.00
Purchased At:Cyclespectrum, ugh!
Strengths:Indestructible frame, generally a tough bike. Withstood quite a bit.
Weaknesses:Components could have been better...but that was '97
Similar Products Used:Any heavy alum hardtail...
Bike Setup:Stock. Alivio, Acera, sram.
Bottom Line:My first baby. Caloi is a decent company from Brazil. Bought this shiny beauty with yellow letters in Houston while in college out of spontanaety, rode it around the block. Took it to upstate NY, rode it on the roads. Back to Texas. Up to that point it had survived 3 years with basic to be expected breakdowns. Then I started riding seriously in Cam Park. Everything went to hell. At this point I decided I liked MTB, started saving up, but this puppy was starting to cost me. The shop guys helped me out quite a bit...put on used parts, fixed stuff in odd ways to save cost, and in the end, it actually survived well enough to be given to a friend. Now all I have is pictures...memories...sniffle. What can I say. If I applied $500 to buying a bike NOW, I'd have a bulletproof beast that is faster and weighs less and is more fun. But that was then. For 1997, it was good. Some things about it really weren't bad at all...the frame geometry was excellent, classic XC; the Rigida wheels held up real well. I am also glad I started on an all rigid bike (later added an indy xc). As the result of that afternoon, all I do now for exercise and unwinding is ride...road, MTB...around my parking lot when I am studying late at night. Life is good. Good investment, thanks Caloi. ...Didn't Lance ride one once...?

Bottom Line:
i bought a caloi sport for 360 dollars. it came with a aluminum frame but just allright shimano components. alivio and acera x. but with these parts i have races one season at texas mountabike racing association (www.tmbra.org),a full year as a downtown bike courier, and had my bike for 3 years.. i have upgraded my components to all lx and xt and now it rides even better. best part is caloi makes the same hardtail frame for all there bikes so the 1000$ hardtail is the same frame as mine. so it is a good bike you can build around. also i was bunnyhopping of some stairs and broke my back boss bolt brake. i had it for two years when this happen . stripped it down sent it off on ups 3 day recieved my new frame no questions asked 4 days later. awesome
