from Berkely, CA Date Reviewed: June 9, 2007 | | Duration Product Used: | 2 Years | | Strengths: | Not a fussy peice of equipment. Doesn't require the care than a more sophisticated fork does. It's better than a rigid fork, which is rare at this price. | | Weaknesses: | The stiction, inconsistancy of the damping, and noise care all low-rent. | | Similar Products Used: | Other cheap forks with elastomer and coil damping. Most of these were definitly not better than rigid forks. | | Bike Setup: | Aggressive/Heavy build cross country hardtail. Does everything. Does not get babied. | | Bottom Line: | Mine is the EXR Pro Coil. It's two tubes, each with a plunger and a spring in it. This is not a proper catridge damper-equiped fork like you would find at the 300 dollar price or on a motorcycle.
However it is made with quality materials and it's a good design. It absorbs different sizes and frequencies of bumps and returns the wheel to it's origional position with reasonable control. That's what a suspension fork is supposed to do and this one does it way, way better than most of the cheap forks out there.
I could spend 200 bucks and get a good deal on a nicer, more complicated fork, but I haven't done that. I could swap out to any number of nice ridgid forks, but I have done neither so far, so I guess I must like this fork.
3 Chilis overall for quality, materials, design and structural stiffness. Mediocre damping performance. Ease to maintatin.
4 for value for cheap purchase price and low cost to maintain. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

We should specify which fork we're reviewing. I really like this fork. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to tell a difference from the RST and would be regretful of spending the cash - but I couldn't be happier. This fork has absorbed shocks that would have otherwise probably sent me over the handlebars, not that it's a "big hit fork", but still... I've only gotten about 3ft. off the ground with it so I can't speak for the dirt jumpers, but awesome for medium difficulty cross country stuff. I bent the steertube and wrecked the headset from the dang thing, So I baught this one. Im so glad that the price was so low (250 + Tax) and it should last me for a while. I got it for it's simplicity - can't go much wrong with steel springs and open bath lubrication. Plush, but a bit noisy when new - makes the gurgling sound as the oil circulates. Because it's so simple there are fewer things that can go wrong with it. No easy way to control rebound but I like it as is. from Victoria Australia Date Reviewed: February 10, 2005 | | Duration Product Used: | Less than 1 month | | Purchased At: | Local bike shop | | Strengths: | Nice colour - blood red. Light, tunable as it is air / oil. Very active when set up right and resists bottoming due to SSV. Feels more like a coil fork - linear. | | Weaknesses: | Had very little rebound control when I got the bike (GT Avalanche 0.5)topped out something shocking. Felt like a cheap undamped fork. I dropped the oil out (supposed to be 7.5 weight) and mixed that half and half with 10 weight to give a middle weight b/w the two. Put that back in and played with pressures a bit. Now it works well. On an averagwe sort of XC ride with no huge hits I get 92mm out of it with just over 10 in reserve for bigger stuff. More active in the bottom and middle of the stroke now and no more topping out. Really, this fork needs an externa rebound adjuster. | | Similar Products Used: | Ye olde Mag 21, various Judy SL's, Manitou Six. | | Bike Setup: | GT Avalanche 05 hardtail. | | Bottom Line: | Get the too quick rebound sorted and it's just fine.
