Date Reviewed: May 14, 2008
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Purchased At:got it with a p.2 used for 350 for all
Strengths:Great travel and plushness. This fork soaks it all up. can take good sized drops
Weaknesses:Weight, but I'm just saying this cause this is my first non-x country fork. Sucks to ascend
Similar Products Used:Giant Rainier with a Manitou Axel
Bike Setup:2004 Junior T, P.2, Bontrager big Earl rims.
Bottom Line:This is a really great fork to do some freeriding, jumps and drops. The other day I messed up a drop and nose dove three feet straight down, this fork sucked up the impact and I didn't even fall off the bike. This fork gives me confidence to try the things that I never would have tried before. I got this fork on a 04 p.2 for 350 total so for me this was a great deal. Im actually getting a longer travel fork for my xc bike now because I like this ride so much better. If you can find it cheap like I did this is a great fork and something I'm very happy I got.

Favorite Trail:Viper
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Purchased At:came with bike
Strengths:A decent downhill fork which isn't very heavy, Can be tuned easily, Good for downhill/freeride but still have enough spring in them for good jumping.
Weaknesses:Not as heavy duty, wont soak up 100% of drops it's more like 45%.
Similar Products Used:I've tried the 66RC, 888RC, and some little 4in travel forks.
Bike Setup:Specialized Big Hit Expert, Marzocchi Jr. T's, Mrp chain guide, Roco RC rear shock, and too many other parts to list.
Bottom Line:This is and all around great fork if your just getting into downhill/freeride type trails. I like to jump everything on the path on my way down, and these work great because they're not too soft, they have good rebound, and they're a lot lighter than some other forks that i have felt.

Favorite Trail:Tenderfoot
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $345.00
Purchased At:JensonUSA
Strengths:The fork handles it self very well while doing trail riding. It is very composed and you generally feel under control. It holds its line well and is stiff. Very plush.
Weaknesses:Listen to everyone when they say is comes soft and fast, ad it does make a little kind of thudding noise when you go over stutter bumbs. The fork comes soft, and the rebound is super fast. It dives a lot under hard braking
Similar Products Used:888, Shiver DC, DJ 2
Bike Setup:04 Specialized BigHit, Maxxis rubber, um a Jr. T, and a chrome bell.
Bottom Line:A good fork for the money. You just have to make it stiffer unless you weigh like 100 lbs. Also the rebound is very fast. It is otherwise good. Obviously the 888 is about 888 times better, but it also costs a lot more. This fork is perfect for a freerider on a budjet looking to upgrade from a bad stock fork.

Bike Setup:Marin Team D.H., 04 J.R. T's, Hayes nines, coil sprung Fox Vanilla RC 550 BY 280/Hadley Hubs ,black spire chain guide and tensioner with Truvativ Hussefelt cranks
Bottom Line:It may not provide the overall performance that the serious downhiller is looking for,so if thats you, the Boxer or 888's will satify your needs. For the casual downhill/freerider if offers premium performance and very low maintenace at a great price. As for the oil weight issue, I suggest you top the oil up insetad of changing the weight of it. topping it up will improve the ramping and the rebound.

Strengths:Smooth travel. Soaks up just about everything.
Weaknesses:Only external preload adjustments
Bike Setup:'04 BigHit, stock other than fork
Bottom Line:I gave the preload a few turns, and I have not had to change to heavier oil. There have only been a couple times that I bottomed out, and it was not harsh.
I have taken some 10' drops on them with no complaints.

I am 5'8", 170lbs.

This fork is great for the price I paid. If you are a serious downhiller, you will probably not be reading reviews on this fork. If you do some downhill along with freeride this fork is a bargain.

Similar Products Used:boxxer, 888, marzocchi EXR pro,
Bike Setup:04 big hit spec, 04 jr t's, FSA head set, dimension 20mill hub, maxxis high rollers
Bottom Line:so far the fork has been good, have yet to take it off any drops worth mentioning, but i love it, it looks so bad a$$ sitting on my spec, i love it, it totally makes the bike, if you have a spec i deffinetly recomend geting rid of the CRAP stock fork, and getting a jr t. this is a good DH fork, or a freeride fork, it even boosted my urban riding alot, and my bike does way better on stairs. over all i have absolutly NO buyers remorce, even after the spending 600 dollars installing it, (i know, i made a cupple mistakes, left bottum ring of head set on old fork..so had to getta new one, had to get new hub and build it up, etc.) but in the long run, i think it was all worth it. so if your on a budget and want a nice dual crown fork, go for this one, for 350 bucks you cant go wrong.

Price Paid: $150.00
Strengths:Strong, looks good, reliable
Weaknesses:have to change oil, no adjustment !!!, noisy
Similar Products Used:drop-off triple
Bike Setup:Kona Stinky 2004
Bottom Line:The fork is ok, I swapped from drop-off triple which came stock no my Stinky 2004, I didn`t like the noise it was making and had a good deal on the JrT, that`s why I have. But I would definitely NOT spend the extra dough (too expensive in Poland)on the JrT which is very similar to drop-off triple in many ways. It just has 1 inch more travel and is better made (quality is visible). The internals are similar though not the same and the fork works different than the triple. In JrT you dont need a pump, just have the knobs to change the stiffness of the springs (if you like turning and turning and turning...) But for me the spring could be even softer - I weigh 75 kilos. The other thing is the oil which comes stock - 7.5 makes the rebound way too fast. I now have 10W and is still too fast, unless I ride in 0 temperatures or lower. I`m planning to add some 20w to mix with the 10w or change to 15w. That should be fine.
All in all the fork is very good and I like it more than the Triple. It`s heavy but should take the beating, I guess. I give 4 chillies because there are already such forx as 66 or 888 in similar price range and way better. But I demand anything better.

Price Paid: $450.00
Strengths:I like the fork a lot. It is responsive to small bumps, strong, looks nice. 7" of buttery travel, extemely smooth. This fork is great for bombing downhill, log rides, stunts, urban.
Weaknesses:Bottoms out pretty easy- I have the preload maxed out and I still bottom out on bigger jumps. I am glad I am using all of the travel but I am a little wary when I slam the fork down so easy. You get what you pay for- If you are interested in a beefier fork, spend more. However, I have ridden this fork very hard and I am very happy with it, except that it bottoms out sometimes on big hits. Oh well.
Similar Products Used:None- first double crown fork I have bought, I had another Marzocchi DJ1 that I liked.
Bike Setup:Big Black Bullet that climbs sometimes.
Bottom Line:I like Marzocchi products- they are made well, look nice and perform nicely. I am able to take a lot of aggessive lines and ride fast with my Junior T. I am happy with the performance of this fork. In the future I may put heavier oil in it to slow it down a little- however, there are drawbacks to slow rebound speed as well as super fast. I don't really see myself needing a bigger fork. This fork is great for all around uses, I mainly like to ride fast, technical single track, jumps, drops, logs, etc. If you are "Mr. Johnny Extreme" you may want to get the 888r or the Monster T. However, you can still do a lot with this fork. I recommend picking one up. You'll be happy.

Strengths:Good bit of travel if you aren't thouroghly insane. good for moderate drops, maybe larger drops with a good landing. Look big, and they soak up pretty much anything you throw at them.
Weaknesses:I was able to keep on bottoming them out on small drops (3 feet and less) when i first got the bike. I took the bike in, got them to put heavier oil in (15W) and it seem to have done the trick.
Similar Products Used:Manitou Magnum....on my old trail bike.
Bike Setup:Stock '04 Norco Atomik
Bottom Line:Good shocks. 6 inches of travel is nothing to sneeze at unless you are really tough on your shocks. then you might want to upgrade. but i ride some decent trails it is seems fine to me. One thing though, when you get them, take them for a couple rides, see how you like 'em. Then i would serioulsy suggest getting heavier oil put in if you are not satisfied.

Strengths:Very smooth on trails, small jumps, and small drops. Good for beginner downhillers who don't want to huck 10' drops. Looks good.
Weaknesses:The springs are way to soft, 7.5 wt oil what the ****, no preload, adjustments suck, not stong enough compotents on it. DO NOT TRY DROPS BIGGER THAN 5' WITH OR WITHOUT A LANDING!
Bottom Line:Second ride the plastic knob on the stantion came off, hit me in the eye, causing me to go over the bars when I hit a root. I snapped the qr 20 bolt right before a race which got me pretty mad. I have bottomed the fork countless times. I hate to say this but I really do think Marzocchi screwed up on this fork. It needs to be suited for more aggresive downhillers. I would recommend Super T, 888, or Boxxer forks for aggresive downhillers.

Purchased At:Universal Cycles Portland
Strengths:Simple, maintenance free (after initial dial in), improved tire clearance, improved lower crown.
Weaknesses:No rebound control, will require heavier springs and heavier oil if you weigh more than 150 lbs. If you like SLOW rebound it cannot be achieved with this fork unless you buy the Super T cartridge.
Similar Products Used:03 Jr.T
Bike Setup:04 Banshee Chaparral
Bottom Line:After my first ride I was so disappointed that I considered selling this fork and buying a Super T. It was way too soft and too fast and felt squirrely compared to my 03 Jr.T. After consulting Marzocchi, they recommended heavier springs ($35) and heavier oil (Spectro Gold 10W). After the initial changes the fork has been a real performer. The SSV rebound is now perfect and I havent had a hard bottom out yet.

Strengths:Very plush, smooth travel. Adjustible, responsive. Great all around fork- not too heavy, enough travel to handle everything.
Weaknesses:Sometimes the fork will spike when you hit big rocks, chatters over small bumps. It can take a lot of abuse- takes rocky trails like a dirty wh*re.

Bottom Line:This is a good fork. It can get bucked around a bit on REALLY rough trails, sometimes bottoms out. Otherwise it can handle about anything.

Strengths:There have been several improvements for this fork over the last few years- better drop outs, qr20 axle, larger 32mm stanchions- not to mention it looks pretty sick.
Weaknesses:None I have found- This is the JR. T - not the Monster T or Super T or 888r If you are complaining about lack of features or performance than spend the extra money and buy a nicer fork. I have found the construction of this fork to be superb.
Similar Products Used:I have owned another Marzocchi fork- loved it. I had a Hanebrink LT-9 which was terrible.
Bike Setup:Heavy SC Bullit that climbs, 2 rings, doublewides, 24" rear wheel, nice components.
Bottom Line:This is an awesome fork. It is very well made, super plush and looks great. It is perfect for the variety of riding I like to do which is a mix of shuttle downhills, technical trail riding, jumps, drops and urban assult along some climbing too.
Great fork- I highly recommend picking one up if you have the means.

Strengths:Nice look.
Adjustable height.
Very light for a 170mm fork.
Very stiff for a light triple crow fork.
Integrated stem is amazing.
Weaknesses:No rebound and compression adjustments. But if you want that, buy a SuperT.
No so soft like old Monsters (1999-2002).

http://www.eder.com.br/bike/remec
Bottom Line:I had two problems: 1) Botommed at a little jump; 2) Sounds. The bottomed happens if the level oil is low. The correct level is 10 cm from the top with the fork at the bottom. I use 20w or 15w. The sounds happens if the washers under springs are not at the correct position. Just put them correctly.

Always the fork works great for free ride and is very beautiful. The adjustable height is a great evolution for free riders, but I don't like to move all those screws.
No more troubles. I'm happy now, and will increase the rating from my last review. But I yet feel the absence of my old and soft 2001 monster...

P.S.: MARZOCCHI, I WANT THE OLD 7" MONSTER BACK!!!!!!!

Strengths:Super smooth, looks cool, strong, and that about finishes that.
Weaknesses:Where to begin...the stock springs are SH!T. What were u thinkin marzocchi?! 7.5 wt oil? No preload? The adjustments SUCK. Oh, i almost forgot the horrid creaking internals. WHAT IS CAUSING THIS RETCHED NOISE? DID MARZ SOMEHOW STUFF SOME RANDOM PIECES OF METAL INTO MY FORK?!

Bottom Line:The 03' forks were insane. perfect. amazing. Marz somehow managed to do the opposite of that this year.
10th ride, the adjuster knob on the stanchion flies off, to be lost forever. The very next ride, the bolt on the qr20 snaps in half. Can bottom off of 5' to flat, or 10' to trannie. Terrible scraping noise on compression. Trash springs. light oil.
marz, what did you do?
If you buy this, be prepared to spend money on oil, springs, and put up with the aweful noise these make.

I contacted Marzocchi and they hinted to buy a SuperT rebound cartdrige. This is really very sad.

Strengths:Looks, the all black looks stealthy. Reasonably stiff, but its certainly no MonsterT (but then again, what is?!). Adjustable lower crowns on the Jr/SuperT models, after a year spent worrying that Marzocchi had all gone mad with bonded crowns. What a relief to get them back!
Weaknesses:Well, the total lack of rebound adjustment really is poor. A friend of mine with 03 JrTs has rebound adjustment and Air Assist. What happened to those for 04?
Like some others have said... what the heck is making all the noise inside? It doesnt sound healthy. Sometimes I land something and wonder if something has cracked somewhere! My friend's 03s are almost silent under compression.
Although some pics show the QR20 with Bolt version, mine came with the tradition QR20+ levers. Apparently I gotta pay £25 for the kit... Its only two cylinder nuts and some slightly custom bolts! Why oh why haven't we got proper 20mm yet on these forks? Or is that just reserved for the higher forks?

Bike Setup:Bullit, 04 JrTs, Hope MonoM4/C2, 321 on Bulbs, Raceface/XT drivetrain.
Bottom Line:These forks are pretty decent, but they do have a few issues. They're not major issues, but are a bit annoying. Changing rebound speed via oil viscosity alone is a major backwards step, esp as they managed it on 00, 01, 02 and 03 JrTs. Isnt fork technology meant to progress?
The sound issue isnt hugely problematic, but it is disconcerting at times. When I ride over chatter bumps or cobble stones, the front end sounds like a baby rattle. Large hits produce a more pronounced sound, but who knows what causes it.
Overall, the chassis of the fork is fine, its just the internals that aren't great (but then it is the budget fork I guess). If SuperT internals aren't too expensive (unlikely), I might upgrade at a later date. Or just get some 170mm 888Rs :-D
I would love to vote them 4 chilis overall, but the backwards step with rebound settings and noise mean Im gonna mark them down (I'm still a huge Marz fan though, I swear by them).

Strengths:Nice n stiff, nice long 170mm travel, available in standard dropout, which can be handy, rather have the 20mm though. Looks wicked !
Weaknesses:I'll just echo here what every single person who has bought these forks says. WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING MAROZOCCHI ?!?!?!? NO REBOUND ADJUSTMENT? Thier website STILL says that it has internal rebound adjustment. In my country thats called false advertising and they would get a massive fine for advertising a products features as blatant bullsh1t. Even the manuals say it has rebound adjustment and the diagrams of the fork are completly wrong. You cant tell me that they made a last minute design decision to remove a massive feature! I got rid of my last forks becuase they didnt have rebound adjustment and chose these forks (aside from other things) becuase they did. I would not have bought them if they had advertised thier features accurately. Also makes some nasty internal clunking noises which they have since I got them out of the box.

Bottom Line:Very very poor form from Marozochi. I have tried to get comment from them and they just refer me to "my local dealer" which is no use to me seeing as I bought these from Merlin Cycles on the internet. Why is it that the companies that make bikes and compnents have got NO customer service and do not seem to have even the slightest concern for thier customers and thier satisfaction with the products they have purchased. I will not buy another Marozocchi fork becuase of this. I no longer trust this company, there are so many thigns inside a fork that you cant see, how do I know they arent lying about any of the other advertised features or specifications? In the end I do love this fork, its great for freeriding, which is what I use it for, most people seem to want to slow down the rebound, I actually want to speed it up, but I ride my forks at max preload and like them to feel really stiff so thats just me. Any disapointment here is not in the fork but in the company that made it, the lack of rebound does limit the versatility of the fork but doesnt stop it doing what I mostly want it to do which is suck up impacts and it does that very well.

Bottom Line:*This is the same review I had on the 03 site. Just thought I'd post it on the 04 since there is one now.* Out of the Box the rebound was too damn fast!! I bought this under the assumption that it had an internal rebound adjuster but after talking to Marzocchi Tech support the 04 no longer has internal rebound. Drained the stock 7.5 and added 10wt. It felt fine at 1st on my local trail (big rock gardens) but after this weekend on more of a fast DH trail littered with smaller rocks it chattered like hell. Still don't know what to do yet, although changing the oil is easy it still sucks having to do it in order to fine tune. Another option is to upgrade to the Super T cartridge but might as well buy the Super T. All in all it's a good fork but it could've been better with the built in rebound. Marzocchi, update your manuals and tell all your distributors about the missing internal rebound!!!!!
