Strengths: Climbs like a goat Great handling Stock tires work well Rock Shock Pilot is very adjustable
Weaknesses: Hearing a creaking noise somewhere near the stem on the rough stuff
Bottom Line:
This is a great bike. I ride a stock 19.5, which replaced a 10 year old Trek Single Track that had no front shock. I considered getting a full suspension bike but could not justify the price. I also skipped the disc brakes since I don't ride in the muck. Got a great end of year deal on this bike and I have been very happy with it. It's fast and handles great. The shock is very adjustable and the bike climbs really well. I recommend this bike for beginners or veterans that have a budget. It's a very competitive bike for the price.
Strengths: light weight, sturdy, good gear, over powered brake
Weaknesses: bar handle
Bottom Line:
i only use it in the city. it is little bit too good for tarmac. It is hard to upgrade, since even just to match the stock setup is already a big chunk of money. if you are going to upgrate soon, go for the 6000. but if you are a same kind of person like me,want a cool bike, no plan to touch the stock setting in near future, 6700 gives you verything you paid for.
Similar Products Used: none. former bike was a less complete Giant, very old one.
Bike Setup: standard, factory setup.

Strengths: Great climber, light, looks the part, easy shifts, tough as old boots, similar paint scheme as my Trek road bike
Weaknesses: Seat post shifted until I cleaned off the lube. Easy to accidentaly shift gears on rough terrain as the shifters were originally set too close to the grips. Some fasteners showed signs of rust after first wet outing, Same as my Trek road bike.
Bottom Line:
This is my first real mountain bike and I bought it specifically to enter and compete in local adventure races. These are run on a mixture of country road, loose gravel trail and straight off road bush. Did a few miles on road then moved to the loose stuff and hills. The bike performs flawlessly. My first race was last Saturday and I came 2nd. 20 miles of the 4 hour race was on the TREK, it never missed a beat, steep climbs, fast rough descents, difficult technical sections all taken in its stride.
Confidence building with the bike on a daily basis, but love it.

Strengths: Excellent frame, nice component spec, disc brakes feel nice, tires grip very well on the broken hardpack, bike is very light weight, climbs extremely well, forks feel ok too, seem quite adjustable, good frame geometry as well, nice reach to the handlebars, paintwork good and looks nice.
Weaknesses: Hate the standard handlebar grips, like clutching a turd, seat is a bit hard, will get used to that one though, discs were rubbing on pads, easily adjusted with a 0.2mm feeler gauge on the affected side, found that the lever travel isnt always the same on downhills, caught me out that one, would have been nice to have some named hubs in there and obviously stainless steel eyelets on the wheels too, also the bontrager components have the nastiest mild steel bolts which rust up after 2 seconds outside, will be changing those for stainless soon. Have never liked presta valves and looks like the rims wont fit schrader valves in there??
Bottom Line:
Great bike, very impressed, seems made for the sort of xc riding i do with quite a bit of uphill and downhill road, hoping everything holds up as parts are hard to find in the caribbean, would have scored 5 chili's if it werent for tiny complaints about rusty bolts/presta valves.
Bike Setup: have paid attention to disc brake set up, forks at 20 psi for 190 lb rider, rest standard.

Strengths: Looks quite cool, handles well in most situations, Hayes disc brakes have been great. No major problems or break downs
Weaknesses: The RockShox Pilot SL is not the best thing around and has an unnerving "squish" sound to it, stock seat is uncomfortable, front deraileur has been hard to fine tune and the chain kept falling off inner ring, tires wore out fast
Bottom Line:
I have actually really liked riding this bike. It was my first "real" mountian bike, and it is still serving me well. It seems to be a great entry level ride for people who plan on riding a lot and getting better. I plan to upgrade to SRAM rd and shifters, and probably a new crank in the next few months as things start to wear. So far, a great value.
Bike Setup: Mainly stock except for Selle San Marco seat, Thudbuster, Panaracer tires, Wipperman teflon chain, Hayes HFX-9 discs (included at purchase)

Bottom Line:
I got the '05 w/ hydraulic discs (thus the price), and am glad I did. They don't ice up like others tend to... Bike is light, fast, and feels to be freaking solid. Fork lock-out is nice for the climb. Handles well on ice and snow, as well as anything, I suppose. Paint scheme is actually nice - I guess Trek got the hint that their flashy paint and decal schemes have really sucked throughout the years. I might not even get this one repainted! I can't think of anything that I dislike about her yet. Felt a bit spendy, but for the component group you couldn't build a better value. Nicer saddle would be appreciated - but everybody has their own opinion of what a nice saddle is. A fella can expect to swap that - no big deal.
Bike Setup: Stock with Polar computer and Nokian Extreme studded tires. Will be on Snowcats soon.

Strengths: Light strong frame, Good components for price range
Weaknesses: rim brakes suck, have experienced seat post slide durring a race, that sucked!!
Bottom Line:
I have FUing abused this bike and it hasnt failed me yet. I use to always ride trails lots of light downhill trails, But now am at school and do light urban assualt with 3-4 foot drops onto flat concret riding up stairs. I am looking into going to bigger tires but am afraid they will rub on the frame, if you have heard anything about what sizes will fit let me know please. Good X country racer, and if your body can take it good for anything you can come up with. Most peoeple are going to a full suspension bike which are nice and cushy but who goes biking to have an easy time and a cushy ride.

Strengths: Good strong frame, works well for stong beginners and even more advanced riders, disks that come with it are amazing deal Hayes HFX-9.
Weaknesses: Lots of flex in the Bontrager stem and handlebars, Shimano crankset and bottom bracket are lead weights and arms flex terribly. The shimano peddals pack in the mud/snow fast.
Bottom Line:
My bike has taken many hits and still is there, after 3 months of hard XC riding and a few races I blew the seals on the Pilot SL and it would no longer hold air and im only 150 lbs and 5"11, so I went up to top notch with a Fox TALAS RLC, then a mounth later the crank set broke on me and the BB was grinding. I upgraded the Bontrager stem and handlebars the give too much flex when riding. The bike is a good bike the componetry could be better but lasts the harsh elements out there. Also I have experienced the seat post slip.
Bike Setup: Fox Talas RLC front fork, Race Face Evolve XC crankset and new BB, Easton EA 70 Stem and Easton Monkey Lite XC Carbon Composite.

Strengths: All around great bike. Perfect for a beginer. the frame can take a beating.
Weaknesses: Brakes,seat,headset
Bottom Line:
this is my first bike, so i started easy on the bike. It lasted for my first season of riding until i got better. that is when all the upgrades came on. I wore out the tires, went through 3 seats. lx der was shot, headset was grinding. crankset was ready to retire. bottom line is this is a great beginner bike if you have the money to spend on it, and really good if your just a weekend warrior. my dad has the same bike bought at the same time his is fine and still stock . if you looking for a bike to upgrade to you might want look at something a little better or spend a 1000 on upgrades like i did
Bike Setup: avid 7 brakes/levers, X0 der x9 shifters, xt front der, xt hollowtect crank, chris king headset, wtb rocket v ti seat, panaracer fire xc 2.1 tires, xt cassett, what ever is left is stock for the moment

Strengths: -strong frame -good fork (depends on what kind of riding you do) -good components for the money
Weaknesses: I no longer ride this bike. I got a 2004 liquid 30. I bought the 6700 because I used to not go on fire roads/ single track ect. So for where I used to ride, mostly uphill pavement, this bike was awsome. But once I went to some real trails in the mountains where the terrain is much different, my bike couldnt keep up. So dont get this bike if you do some serious XC/freeriding.
Bottom Line:
This bike is an awsome bike for light cross country riding. The Pilot sl isnt the best fork for freeriding so dont do that. But if you are a somewhat begginer and you want a good bike, this bike is for you. WARNING! DONT GET SCREWED. YOU SHOULDNT HAVE TO PAY MORE THAN 650 BUCKS FOR THIS BIKE IN 2004.
Bike Setup: STock except I changed the tires to some Michelin Hot S 2.2's.

Strengths: This is actually a review for the 2004 model. The frame seems strong semilight. Great value for the price, lx, deore. The maverick wheelset isnice as well. The bike climbs extremely well, the front wheel stays glued to the ground =, yet is easy to pop the wheel up over obstacles. Descenting is a blast as well.Nice fork, bars.
Weaknesses: Heavy cranks. Promax brakes blow. The frame has no discbrake mount, yet trek offers the same model number equipped with brakes. (trek does sell a seperate bolton mount)
Bottom Line:
I was out of the a mtn bkng game for a while. I wanted to get back into it affordably so the 6700 seemed like a great solution. And it was. I have no regrets about buuying a more affordable bike with a great frame. I know I can upgrade as needed and always have a great frame to build upon. Not that the coponents aren't up to par. I was actually very surprised at how well the bike operates, with the exception of the brakes, but thats no problem with the avids.Buy it you are low on bucks and desire a good bike, dont if your expecting top dollar specs. FIVE FLAMIN CHILIS FOR THE ABSOLUTELY SUPERB VALUE, AND 3 CHILIS OVERALL ONLY DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE FRAME HAS NO DISC MOUNT, AND ITS BRAKES SUCK.

Strengths: I have the 6700 with Hayes HFX-9 hydraulic disk brakes. Trek bikes are expensive in Finland, so for the price I paid the frame and brakes are awesome
Weaknesses: No weeknesses found so far. The seatpost problem haven't materialized. No problems with the rims. Saddle ok.
Bottom Line:
Very responsive, fast bike. So fast the rider has to shape up. Light but can still handle rough bits and downhill in a decent manner. The Pilot SL is not the plushest of forks, but it´s very XC. The bike is fun to ride everywhere, even on paved roads. The Finnish winter is too rough for cyclocross, but the 6700 will (I hope) inspire me to ride through the winter. Buy it if you want an allround light terrain machine that's fun to ride. Don't if you mostly ride technical stuff or downhill.

Strengths: Excellent Frame/front shock, so far! Brakes hold up on steep downhills nicely.
Weaknesses: Seatpost, ofcourse. Mine used to slip until it BENT, if you can believe that! Sloppy shifting on the crank side. Rear wheel. Seat. Fairly heavy in the middle. Tires.
Bottom Line:
OK, from all the weaknesses listed above it would seem that this bike pretty much sucks. But I am actually happy with it. I bought the thing with the idea that I would sooner or later update most of the components, but I didn't realize just how much sooner I would be forking out more of my cold hard cash for better parts!
Lets start with the front end. The shock is absolutely perfect for me. Not alot of worry about setup and all that nonsense. I have it set a little bit softer than the recommendation for my weight, but not too much. The "rabbit/turtle" adjustment is nice too. I really like a quick return when going downhill, and a little slower on the flats, so its nice to know I have this option.
The seatpost sucks. Mine bent (and I'm not that fat, am I?). I actually weigh in at 210lbs, and I ride pretty hard. So I replaced it with a thompson, and have yet to see how it holds up. The crankset is pretty cheap, so I replaced it with an XT setup. I think the bike shed about 3-5 lbs remarkably. I also had to replace the seat already, but I do spend alot of time glud to it, so I really cant complain there.
The rear wheel fell apart on me, and that wasnt a happy experience, let me tell you. The thing bent about 3 months after I bought it, they "fixed" it, but not long after spokes started breaking. I tried a repair, but just kept loosing spokes, so I broke down and upgraded.
I am extremely happy now with all the upgrades to this bike. The frame is awesome, and I have a tendancy to beat it to death. If I could go back and do it again I would get this frame with better components from the beginning.
