Strengths: Anodized matt black frame looks stealthy, is very light and climbs like a squirrel. Thomson seatpost/stem are quality, as is the new XTR. The XTR discs are excellent - pad wear is good (160lbs rider) & power/modulation is excellent for XC racing. (No squeaks either, for all you Hopers) Wheel package is excellent, though I had to true up the wheels after a couple of rides, since then no problem.
SID WOrld Cups aer infinitely tuneable & sooo smooth. Also much stiffer than my mate's 2002 World Cups.Weaknesses: Silver decals are wearing away on downtube (saving further 2 grammes ;-). Occasional 'top out' knock from SIDs, apparently can be cured by a quick pure valving upgrade (www.tftunedshox.com/frames1.html)Bottom Line: I like it - I've made minor changes, but basically it's as it came out of the factory. The ride, position, everything feels right and has survived my gung-ho riding techniques with honours. My only concern is with the long term use of carbon crowned forks - I'll be keeping a close eye on that steerer.

Strengths: SID World Cup - (carbon)! XTR Wheelset & Groupset! So Soooo, good looking!Weaknesses: Panaracer Trailblaster 1.95- Not light or fast enough, My Schwalbe Fast Freds have been ordered!Bottom Line: My experience with the Trek was brilliant, it taught me how a bike should be, unfortunately i was too young to afford to maintain the forks (98sid) or service the bike ever. So basically i ran it into the ground and ended up selling it for £150 to a mate - he never fixed it up. 2004, 21 years old i decided to treat myself. Enter the most difficult decision i have ever had to make, HARDTAIL VS THE SPECIALIZED BRAIN (better than full sus). You know which one i bought but let me tell you why, weight & price! I tested both, stood there for over an hour scratching my head and realized my mate has a hardtail and i wasnt going to gain any advantage over him by having a heavier essentialy slower bike (yes i know full sus helps you put the power to the floor but i recon the extra weight cancels most of it out) PLUS i could use the money saved by getting the hardtail for a little upgrade in the form of the best xc disk wheels EVERRRR. A month down the line i realize i made the right decision, i'm so happy with it, i'm yet to take a day off work and go to cannock chase with it but so far it's been a blast. I think the SIDs are the best forks i have ever ridden, just beautiful - so plush - and the seals actually work this year! Not sure for how long though (e-mail me if you've got some older than mine please). The XTR paddle shifters work like a dream, i'll never go back! THANK YOU SPECIALIZED!

Bottom Line: In fifty words or less this bike rocks, you wish you had one. I scooped the last one in the country so you will have to wait for 2004 models. Ok so they did not really sell this model in the US, so only the lucky few got the disc version.
