Amazingly fun bike. I have ridden this rig VERY hard for over a year now, riding for many hours several days a week on everything from local trails to lift-serviced down hilling. Bike is light and a great peddler, good geometry makes it a scream downhill and light and nimble on the way up. For the price this was an amazing steel, and a great way into the yeti world. I have been continually upgrading since I purchased it, so really, it's about a $2000+ bike at this point, but $950 for a great frame ready to ride is hard to beat. I recommend this bike to anyone who loves to ride uphill and down.
Weaknesses:
It sounds like this bike comes in number of different configs. Mine was lacking disc-ready wheels, so upgrading to disc brakes was a decent expenditure. The Manitou Skarab Comp fork that came with my bike wasn't great, so that had to go. It's a great project bike, though. And after accumulating better components for this bike, I'm hopping to just buy a new frame when I'm ready for something new (another yeti, of course).

Great bike. If you have the chance to pick one up, do it. It's a few years old now, but when you're smoking people on the trail and having a blast doing it, what's in an age?

Bottom Line:
I've done a good amount of Mtn Biking, and this bike is the most well balanced bike I've ever owned. I do plan on upgrading pretty much all of the stock components. The bike came with good components, but not great. I think that with new fork, like the Fox RLT 100, it would be great. I don't mind though, because I would have paid $750 for this frame alone. I would recommend this bike for almost any one who wants a strong, light weight,cross-country bike. The only reason I didn't give this 5 out of 5 is because I don't think that there is one bike that is perfect for every rider in every aspect.

Ok, two years ago I was a beginner, But this shiney black Yeti made me look like a pro. In two years I have learned to climb nearly vertical cliffs with the rear Fox Shock locked out. At the top I float the shock and do amazing things on downhills that are so steep and rough that they scare guys with a LOT more experience. This bike has given me confidence to do stuff on the downside that in hindsight seem... INSANE! I don't believe in magic, but the Kokopelli makes supernatural moves on wicked, boulder-strewn descents as though it were simultaneously possessed by demons and then gently carried to safety by the gods... when the boys and I go too far.
Weaknesses:
Did everyone get rid of that stock seat? I put a Speed V on mine (nice cush. for rough landings). The mechanic at the bike shop said he had never seen a rear shockmount bolt broken off and he attributed this more to operator excess than product weakness. In the desert we have to keep those bushings lubed to avoid squeaks.

Bottom Line:
This bike outperformed even Yeti's most expensive models, so Yeti stopped making it: it's all about the bottom-line. If you were a lucky moron like me, one found you.

Yeti syle and name. Bad Ass Black. Amazing feel. Wallet friendly. Great components to start.
Weaknesses:
Have to keep the pivots extra lubed.
Bike Setup:
Original Race Disc setup with SRAM X.9/X.gen DT. Race Face Evolve X-Type Cranks. e70 stem. Stock everything else.
Bottom Line:
The Koko with the Race Disc setup is a great bike. Fits my 5'8" 160lbs frame w/ only a few adjustments. It's properly abused on the trail and properly pampered off.
THE FIT: I swapped stems for a slightly shorter version and narrowed the bars a bit for proper fit and for the trails.
THE EFFECT: The bike itself was an immediate boost to my cababilities riding. I rode with the same group of guys and would consistently be in the middle to the end of the pack becuase my technical climbing was mediocre. My downhills were fast but not outstanding. Then i splurged on the Koko. immediately (same group of guys, just the following weeks) i was leading the pack. no change in fitness levels or the trails we rode. simply a koko! I give credit where I feel it is due.
LONG TERM: Over a year has passed and i have to say that the koko has held up well. The pivots need lubing consistenty or else I get an awful squeek. the badge and decals are fine and the ride is still awesome.
THE PARTS: The group it comes with has quality where it is needed. The black super air has great performance, however I have developed a small leak in the rebound control nob. The fox float L is good, but leaks a small amount over time too. Both give good performance and are fairly light. I started with Truvative Firex cranks/isis that were a little flexy and one bent on me (never seen that before). The LX shifters were mediocre at best and started to feel a bit loose, as did the Avid break levers. The parts had some issues, but the price was Soooooo right! Parts wear (not the koko), and if they don't then you aren't using them right.
BOTTOM LINE: Awesome bike, awesome ride. the group it comes with is good to start. Upgrade when/where necessary. The price is fantastic for a Yeti ride. Not everyone has 2G's to spend on a frame alone.

Electrical tape doesn't stick well to the finish. Yeti hasn't responded to emails requesting bearing/bushing service information.
Bike Setup:
Switched out the MXComp for a Vanilla 100RL. Sweet, plushy coil fork, but I'm hanging on to the MX Comp for when the Fox gives up on me.
Bottom Line:
This is a follow up review: Frame still kicks arse after over a year's use. Fox Float RL still holds all of its air. Read up on this frame and made a few adjustments about 6 months ago. Now I just wipe off the shock and check the air in the fork and tires. Thought I'd be doing more maintenance, but doesn't show signs of needing it.
Seems like the industry is moving everyone towards 120mm -150mm or more of travel, and subsequently towards 30lb+ bikes. Not me; I'll give them a try when my 3.7" Koko is no longer working. Ask your lady -- it's how many inches, but how you use them.

This frame has blown me away. Lockdown the ETA & lockout the rear Float & it'll climb like a cyclecross bike; release the suspension and the 4" front fork sets the angle just right for pounding it down boulders & babyheads. It's seen a few spills but hasn't shown any sign of damage. Poor paint work, fat knuckle causes lots of chainsuck and collects lots of mud. Poor rear mud clearance
I am a hardtail addict but couldn't take the battering my Yeti ARC handed out on the longer enduro's so I decided to go get a Kokopelli.
At first I hated the bike. It felt heavy and when the rear shock was set to a trail setting (20% sag) the bike would not climb well, bobbing and bucking all over the place.
Reluctantly I whacked a load of pressure into the shock (160PSI, 10.5 stone rider!). It was the only thing I could do. I was on the brink of selling it on.
What a transformation. The bob was nearly all gone and yet the high pressure in the shock didn't affect the small bump capability too much either. Very quick through the singletrack and lots of added traction on steep loose climbs.
I'm not going to drop the ARC for shorter 2 hour races but now the Koko' will get used for the longer, rougher events.
The only thing I would recommend is using 85mm Marzocchi forks as the 105mm versions are very long. Other manufaturers forks should be OK at around 100mm.

I thought I could get away with using the lighter (more fragile?) setup on the Ultralite.

I got the race disc build. Black Super 80/100, XT/XTR drivetrain, Avid mech discs, Bonty UST wheels, Titec bits....
Bottom Line:
This bike is just a joy to ride. I wish I could explain why, but this bike is just fast, REALLY fast. On the Yeti, I glide up rocky climbs that had punished me on my hardtail. On the trails, I never feel the suspension; it's just there quietly doing it's thing. After a ride on my hardtail, I feel completely worn out, but after a ride on the Yeti I feel great.
Alas, nothing is perfect and building a bicycle is an exercise in the art of compromise. I really wish the Koko had AS-R style carbon or Ti rear pivots instead of the bushings that will need attention in the form of grease. A little more travel would also be nice. The Black fork likes to leak a little oil from the microlube ports and make a mess. These faults can be forgiven, especially considering a Koko costs less than an AS-R frame.
I never understood why Yeti was regarded with such reverence until I rode this bike. Now I understand completely. I'll be riding this bike for many years to come.

Bottom Line:
I seriously love this bike. I never rode any bike that seems to disappear beneath me like the Koko.
It eats singletrack and technical trails for lunch. It climbs extremely well for a FS bike. It is very stable downhill.
The stock parts weren't the best but that's understandable considering the price. I won't complain about the saddle, they are too much personal taste. The stock wheels were some superlight Bontragers that I couldn't trust for rocky Northeast trails, so they went. The King HS speaks for itself.
The Black fork isn't the most awe inspiring but it has lasted a few thousand miles without problems- very suprising. When it goes it will be replaced with a Fox 100x. The Float rear shock I thought I would replace quickly, but I could never decide which drool of the month shock to replace it with, so it's still on and still dependable. I set the air a little bit high to keep the bob down, although the bob isn't bad in any case.
Bottom line, the frame's good enough to replace any parts without worry. Remember, Yeti's never go out of style!
It's too bad the Koko is discontinued, but it competed too closely with the AS-R.
The Koko has never been anything but a joy to ride. When it goes I'll never hesitate to buy another Yeti.

The following is a re-posting of my first review.
This is a 2002 Kokopelli, but mtbr never added the Kokopelli to the 2002 bike list, so Im posting it here.
The bike is wonderful. I love it. It felt great after only a few pedel strokes. It just fits so da## good. It climbs as good as my old hardtail. It has the Fox Float without the lockout, but I do not feel I have ever needed to lockout the suspention. Even on hard clims, there is no real noticeable bobbing. Once I got the SAG set up to a comfortable feel, I have kind of forgotten about it. I just ride it.
On decents, its a joy. It carves down the singletrack, and just eats up both small bumps and bigger sized drops. Im not into doing BIG drops, its just not my thing, so I cant comment on how it does there. It stays very comfortable and stable, at speed.
The welds are pretty and clean. It is powdercoated, not painted. I loved the AS-R but I did't have deep enough pockets. The Kokopelli has the exact same geometry as the 2002 AS-R, but the top tube is different. They share the same rear triangle.
It looks like Yeti made some nice changes for 2003 as far as specing out the bikes goes. They offer more of a range. Definatly check this bike out, you will be suprised at how much bike you get. JUST GET IT SOON....When the 2003's are gone, the chance of owning an afordable FS Yeti will be gone!

The bike climbs very well and descends just as good. I don't find it has any pedal bob that I could perceive. It rides very well with the rear locked on the road. I use the stock wheels with Ritchey Tom Slicks for road riding and it works just fine.
I am not into hucking or big drops or large jumps. I enjoy single track/cross country and plan on trying my hand at racing next year. To me this bike is just perfect as an all-around mountain bike.
Highly recommend getting this bike.

Yeti is very helpful if you have any questions about the bike and stand behind their product. Quality, quality, quality!!! The frame is well designed and laterally stiff. The rear suspension minimizes pedal bob while managing rough terrain with little trouble. I was concerned about not having a lockout on the rear but found the bike to be an efficient climber and I really wouldn’t have used it much. Beyond that one doesn’t see too many Yetis in Ohio.
Weaknesses:
It is really tough to complain about too much given the amount of bike I got for the money but… My biggest complaint would be the Ithys Amore saddle that came on mine. While the frame functions very well it isn’t the most aesthetically pleasing thing on two wheels. Lastly the bike came loaded with Bontrager components to which I am really not partial. Again this would be an issue if I had paid $4000 for the bike but at $1300 it is truly knit picking…so upgrade!

Bottom Line:
As a guy just getting back into the mountain biking thing I did a tremendous amount of research before making a purchase. Frankly, I don’t think you could find a better value. The bike is all it needs to be out of the box. But the frame is solidly designed and deserves to be surrounded with high quality components.

Bottom Line:
I test rode the 2002 versions of the ASR and Kokopelli, along with the Racer X, Truth, Superlight, and Sugar 2+. I decided on the ASR design, but bought the Kokopelli since it was cheaper and the ASR was being redesigned.
I purchased the bike in October and have ridden it extensively over the last few months. The bike is light and responsive, and terrific on downhills. The climbing is excellent, and has never left me wanting a lockout on the rear shock. I have enjoyed this bike so much that I have decided to buy an ASR when the new carbon fiber rear triangle is in production.
If you can still find a 2002 version for 1200 bucks, buy it. You will never regret the purchase, but may want to move up to an ASR eventually. The new ASR design is a little stiffer in the rear, and lighter than the stock Koko.

Bottom Line:
This is the Disc version of the Kokopelli. For the price, this is one very sweet ride. The build quality is simply amazing. They guys at Yeti were NOT kidding when they said that their welds were a stack of dimes. The handling is fast, but the high center of gravity takes some getting use to. Somehow, the bike feels slower than it is on the downhills. That is to say, it is very very fast. I found out the hard way after a wipe-out. Just as weird, it seemed as if it took more effort to climb on the Koko than on my KHS, but I actually finished my favorite climb in less time and in better shape. Oh that and I was able to clear the baby-heads, ruts and roots on the climbs. My only complaint is that the saddle sucks. Also, the fork does not feel as refined as the Marzzocchi on my KHS.

Bike Setup:
X-Large Koko AS w/ Avid Mech. Disc brakes, stock except for addition of Chris King headset.
Bottom Line:
This review is for the 2002 Koko, which I bought before Supergo put them all on sale.
This is my first full suspension to own, so I could be a little biased. However, I researched bikes for about 6 months before making this purchase and feel pretty confident that this is the best full suspension in this price range.
The frame is really stiff for a dualie, and it climbs great. My XL weighs in at about 26 lbs, which is not much heavier than the Trek 8000 I was riding before. The stock components are great (with the exception of the headset; see below) especially the Avid brakes. I was skeptical of the Bontrager wheels, but so far they have withstood my abuse without needing a single adjustment. I even like the saddle which others have complained about.
I have only had two minor problems with this bike:
(1) I'm a big guy, 225 lbs (close to 240 with camelbak) and this bike flexes so much when I sit on it that it puts extra tension in the rear derailer and brake cables. I have even inflated the shock to 250 lbs or more, with no change in the initial flex. The rear derailler could not even shift into the smallest cog until I loosened up the cable sufficiently. This is a minor inconvenience which makes derailer adjustment difficult, and on-trail bike swapping a bit of a pain.
(2) The Diacomp headest was a disaster. After about 3 rides a noticed a gritty sound coming from the headset, so I took it apart and cleaned tons of dirt from the lower bearing race. I tried to put everything back together a little tighter, but about a month later I noticed more grit sounds, and this time the entire steering tube and inner head tube were covered with dirt, sand, and water. I then replaced the entire headset with Chris King, and have been very happy since.
One other thing, I have been lucky and my Manitou Black fork has held up nicely despite all the bad reviews. However, I don't really understand the 80-100 adjustment option. I tried both settings on different terrain for a few weeks, and finally decided to just leave it at 100mm. I don't really find myself wishing for less flex.
5 chilis because I love the frame and the ride, 4 chilis for value just because I had to buy a new headset.

Bottom Line:
This is my first full suspension bike. Coming from a light hardtail (Schwinn Homegrown), the weight and the higher center of gravity takes a while getting used to. However, by my third ride I somehow find this bike to be much more enjoyable to ride than my hardtail( I do still love my hardtail). I enjoy climbing with it and especial going down hill. I don't feel as connected to the bike as on the hardtail, but the handling of the bike is excellent and the ride is so much better than my hardtail.
Mine weighs about 25lbs (S) and after some research , I did not find too many full suspension bikes in the sub 25lbs - at least with the kind of components on this bike. With a lighter fork, handle bar and wheelset, this bike can easily be in the low 23lbs.
A great XC bike with decent components!A great value even at the retail price. I'm surprised not to see more of these bikes in publications and on the trails (a plus for me).

I absolutely love this bike. for the price I paid I don't think I could have possibly found a better ride. Where I ride there aren't a lot of huge drops but the trails are very technical. There is a lot of soft soil, mud, ruts, huge roots, and pretty steep hills and this bike eats them all up. I have read the negative comments about the Black fork, but I have yet to experience any problems. It could be lighter but even at 80mm it soaks up the hits just fine. I have riden it at very high temps and at sub freezing temps, in both dry and extremely wet conditions and it has performed like a champ. This bike absolutely screams down hills and yet it climbs very efficiently. I have been riding XC for about 2 1/2 years. I think this bike is great for all level riders. I find I can ride the same trails I rode on my KHS without having to stop and rest at all (stopped to rest 4-5 times with other bike on these trails). Besides, it looks very cool. BUY THIS BIKE if you want to really up the enjoyment of your rides without having to take out a second mortgage.

The bike is so worth the money. The Fox Float rear shock is butter smooth, and the front Manitou Black Comp shock is perfect for a lighter person. This thing soaks up the roots and small rocks like they are not there. It took a couple of trial trail runs to get it dialed in, and all seems well now.

This is a 2002 Kokopelli, but mtbr never added the Kokopelli to the 2002 bike list, so Im posting it here.
The shop wanted to move this bike when Supergo bought all the remaining Kokopelli's from Yeti. I had the complete bike shipped to AZ with all the upgrades for a great price (less then what it would cost buy it locally without any upgrades) THANKS Vail Bicycle Service.
