Born and bred on the race circuit, the all-new AS-R has been radically refined. Everything has been CAD-optimized: a new machined top tube knuckle (saves 50g), new Yeti/Easton custom tubing (saves 100g), TiFlex pivot and new dropouts (saves 100g)… for an amazing frame weight (including rear shock) of 5.1 pounds. And still with the same plush (3.7”) travel to handle anything from the roughest XC race courses to the ultimate Colorado singletrack.

Strengths:
Light (Mine is an '06, built in Golden, CO), Stiff, Strong(?), Very well machined everywhere, accepting parts smoothly and securely. Smooth bore in the seat-tube. Straight derailleur hanger out of the box! A few absurdities that wreck the frame business, and are usually the result of shipping guys throwing boxes into trucks. SO I got this frame secondhand from a guy who raced it for one season, loved it, bought a 575, and knew I would dress it and ride it right. It weighs 1lb. more than the Ti hardtail I built it from, and left me with a frame to sell with a price on it higher than I paid for the Yeti frame. Not to shabby. The handmade variety of frames in the US have a ride that can't be compared to robotically built frames. Though there is an accuracy to the machine made versions of these bikes, there is a human-ness in the man-made ones. It stands to reason that if you dress it in handmade parts, it will ride stronger and truer, as long as care was really put into the making of the parts. I have to be thankful to these guys who helped me get it together. I don't know the first thing about lacing Kevlar, or tuning a shock.
Weaknesses:
Paint. I would have thought that by '06 Yeti would have switched to anodizing. It is so much more durable. I would like to see it as an option... If we are going to be subjected to an overseas manufactury, and to not be able to communicate with the builder directly, We are not really getting a "custom" frame at all.

Bottom Line:
Not bad... 21lbs, almost 4" of suspension, same travel in the fork as the rear wheel, and no bob! The climbing is stiff, the descents are clean and easy to control, and there is the same amount of carbon in the frame as in the fork, so the sound and damping are even in the whole passing of bumps and jumps.

Weaknesses:
Available sizes are a little off for an average 6' guy. (ie. 6' guys fall between a large and a med frame.)
Got this during off season and it had a collection of parts on it (probably leftovers from the bike shop) some were good and some were cheap like the TERRIBLE front shock (Rockshox Judy SL) Until I got the Marathon, I had problems holding a tight line if trail was bumpy as the Judy would bounce all over. Anyway the bike now tracks well and seems solid. Don't think its a whole lot faster than my old Klein Attitude hardtail but it seems a little gentler on my old bones after a long ride. Frame is well-made with primo welds and workmanship. The little dealing I had with factory makes me think their adequate for basic warranty issues but probably wouldn't go out of their way to help or correct an unusual problem.
Anyway its a good frame and with the right components, it makes a good ride. Never rode a Blur or Racer X so don't really know what the competition is like. By the way anybody selling a lightweight rear wheel with Chris King hub? I'm in the market.

The bike rides great, fun for all-day rides, and fast enough for XC races. But I'm not impressed with the customer service and workmanship. Noticeable quality difference between the best and worst welds on the rear triangle. There is a piece of metal trapped in the right seatstay that rattles around on some downhills. The head tube badge came off during a ride -- when I told Yeti about this they said I could bring it in and have it replaced for $10. WTF?? It was still under warranty! I also don't like how the rear hyrdaulic hose is routed, it makes two sharp bends. If I had to do it over I would probably get a Santa Cruz Superlight or Blur.

Wow what a work of art! I was so pumped when I got my frame form Yeti and built this bad baby up for all day epic rides. This is my first duli and I wanted something that would last. Man was pissed when a weld in the rear triangle broke come around a sharp turn. My local mechanic took one look at it and said "Bad weld, you better send it back to Yeti. Yeti gave me an RA# and then I waited and waited and waited some more. I finally gave them a call and ask about my new rear triangle. They had no idea what I was talking about. They finally found my rear triangle sitting in their shipping area "behind some other boxes." My new rear triangle showed up about a week latter with no appology or intrest in the fact that I might be a little miffed about the whole thing. So what about the bike? Well, it rides really well and it perfect for all day cross country riding. I have yet to race on it. This bike flys on the uphills. Just stay in the seat and hammer. When you get to the top, shift in to your big ring and let it rip. I am not a big hit kinda rider but this bike is made for those fast techincal single track descents that we all dream about. I wouldn't trade this bike for anything but I am upgrading to a set of Mavic Crossmax Sl 'cause the WTB Speed Disc are heavy and cheap. The only real downside to this bike has been the less than stellar customer service provided by Yeti. I had to provide all of the labor to break the bike down to ship them the busted rear triangle and rebuild the bike when I finally got a new traingle and the guys at Yeti just didn't seem that concerned that one of their bikes had broken after less than 3 months of riding. I find I hard to buy in to their whole "Tribe" deal with that kind of attitude. Oh well, as long as this frame holds together I'll be happy. I am giving this bike a 3 on the value rating due to poor customer service.

I rode a Superlight for 2 years thinking it was the best. I was wrong. Where the Superlight was twitchy, the AS-R is stable. I used to pucker up on steep descents, but now I relish them. When I first started riding it, it kind of felt a little long and sluggish, but once I got used to it, I realized I was actually going faster on trails I have ridden a hundred times.
Last October I took it to Colorado and Utah, and it really shined. This bike really instills confidence, and flows so smoothly over any type of terrain you will wonder how you got along without it. I had really been looking for more of a "trail" bike, like the Heckler or the Turner 5 Spot, But the AS-R fits the bill nicely. It handles very well, climbs great, and descends excellently; it is truly a bike that wants to be ridden all day and then some.
I get asked a lot how I like it, and I usually just grin from ear to ear; I would definitely recommend this bike to anyone, whether they want to race it, as it can be built up very light and is a proven race bike, or just build it up a little stouter (mine comes in at about 26.5 pounds) and have a fantastic trail bike.
If you are looking for a new trail or race bike, do yourself a favor, and check out the AS-R, you will come away with a smile on your face.
Also a quick note about Mad Duck adventure Sports in Grapevine, Texas: Getting a bike like this should be something special,I was VERY pleased with the entire process of choosing a frame, getting the size right, selecting the right components for my riding style and the "final fitting", dialing in the stem length and rise, saddle set up, etc. Those guys really know what customer service is all about. Heck, I pass up no less than four bike shops on the way to The Duck!

Bottom Line:
This is by far the best bike I've EVER ridden! I test rode one similar to the one I bought just one time and absolutely fell in love with the Yeti AS-R and had to have one. Gary and Clarence at Mad Duck Adventure Sports were way cool during the spec'ing and building of the bike. Fully assembled this bike weighs only 25.8 pounds but rides much lighter. I'm faster on this bike than my hardtail that weighs 4 pounds less. You want to go fast into turns, just sit down on the bike and it slingshots you out of the corner. You want to go fast up hill, same thing just step on the pedals and the bike grips like mad. This bike is not plush which is exactly what I wanted. It has just enough travel to make you appreciate what you don't even realize the bike is doing which is make riding much more comfortable. I waited a long time for dual suspension technology to get good enough to warrant buying one and Yeti definitely has gotten there. If you've been waiting to buy a dual susser, wait no more and run to go get one of these dream machines. This being the first FS bike I've ever purchased and ridden I wasn't sure what to expect. In the first 5 min. of riding this bike I felt like I had been riding it for months. The AS-R was a blast to ride from the first pedal stroke. Its climbing is lite and lively, the rear shock is active but no lose of forward momentum can be detected. I tried climbing both locked out and active, the AS-R feels faster and easier with the suspension active. Decending was a blast, the bike soaked up everything I through at it. The AS-R is a very nimble decender, changing lines to getting air, it handles it all. On tight singletrack this bike handles just as well as any hardtail I've owned, quick and responsive. I've raced this bike as is (26.5lbs)and had no problem keeping up and beating others on hardtail bikes. The AS-R has also help with my aging back, no more sore back problems after long hard rides. The Yeti is everything and more of what I expected from a FS bike. Anyone looking for a top quality FS XC ride look no further. This bike is incredible. I have been riding my Litespeed for about 4 years now, and have to say, jow much I have been missing the enjoyment of full suspension! I held out with the hardtail, switched to a softtail, and not I am a true convert. While the Litespeed is a great ride, at 195 the frame flex was at times unnerving, and I never could dial in great confidence in the tights, not why. I am not sure what it is, but the ASR simply locks up on corners, tight turn backs, and the sweeping corners. No front tire wash out. For the more aggressive rider, I have found the limits of adhesion illicit a two wheel slide that feels pretty sweet. And, the rear simply rolls over the chatter or rocks and roots found in central texas. I am experiencing a weight penalty from the Litespeed, but frankly I don't care. I am riding faster and feel better when I am done. My laps times at my weekly rides have been reduced and my friends that race a class above me are not disappearing into the woods ahead of me. Instead I am on the rear tire happily talking sh*t. The 5th element keeps the bop to a minimum, and the only place it shows itself is it out of the saddle sprinting. I have really not had this bike on a super techinal trail yet, and have noticed a bit of a penalty from the upfront weight and stance of the Fox Float 100, but it rides so much better than my Skareb Super that I am sure I will adjust. Bottom line: sweet ride, get one! I wish I had been on this rig during my summer trip to New Mexico. The downhills were downright sick in some areas (at least for a xc rider), and all my friends walked away from me on the downhills. No longer :)

This is actually a 2004 ASR. Changes for 2004 is a new knuckle design, more ovalized chain stays and a custom formed down tube. All were reported to increase strength and reduce weight. I have had the bike for just about 1-1/2 months and could not be happier. If you are truly a skilled rider that can push the envelope, the ASR will deliver and only then is it worth the price. The 5th Element air shock works great and when set up correctly will keep Bob at bay while delivering a sweet ride. Climbing performance is excellent. The handling is spot on and for aggressive riders that can handle 2-wheel drifting at speed this geometry is tough to beat. I did not weigh the frame but complete bike came in at 24.5 lbs. (real weight, not guestimated) running non-tubeless not so light tire set-up. Capable XC riders will love this bike, as will epic riders that are not into hucking. The details in the frame are down to the engraved "Yeti" on all of the bolts, the drop outs even have a little "Yeti Man" engraved in it. The Titanium knuckles in the seat stays are brilliant engineering. You do not "ride" this bike, rather it feels like it is a part of you.
I really question the review posted here by a guy which lists all of these "problems" with his ASR. I have found Yeti's customer service to be the best in the industry, call them or stop by the factory in Golden they will be happy to help you with anything. Where else can you buy a bike, and call up the guy who welded the frame and ask him a question.

This is a very efficient climber. You really have to try hard to generate pedal-inducted bobbing. Very stiff laterally. Other reviews emphasize on how stable it is on descents, although I do agree that it is a great descender, I find that the best characteristic of this frame is the pedaling efficiency. I haven’t tried the new platform designs but of the others I have tried, this is the best climber. I also considered the Truth, it was superior downhill but clearly inferior going up, it felt loose and bobby. As the LBS guys said, the Truth is the SUV and the Yeti is the Ferrari – A little less plush but more control and efficiency, I totally agree. The RM Element just didn’t feel like it had the travel. The ETSX felt like the Hummer of the group, a little too much for cross-country. The Jekyl was the worse of all, felt like a noodle.
If there is one thing negative to say about this frame is that it is only average in tight technical sections. My previous bike, the FSR XC, was much shorter and did very well there. I purposely chose a bike that would be more stable at high speed. The Yeti is an excellent confidence builder on the downhill. The wheelbase, stiffness and 3.7 inches in the rear make it really fun to fly down. The Marathon also soaks up big bumps real nice, it is a great match for this frame.
If you live around Denver, I recommend you checkout the Single Track Factory. Some shops claim good service, these guys HAVE great service.
Living in the Denver area, I mostly ride rocky punishing terrain. I’m not into using lifts to climb mountains, I find the climbs as fun as the downhills. This is the best bike I found for these conditions, I’m really happy with my choice. I don’t know exactly how much it weights but I’m guessing about 25 pounds.
So far, I have had only one minor problem with the bike. The seatpost tube is too tight for the seat tube. Not a big problem, my LBS will fix that. Everything else is top quality. The bike looks and feel like a very high-end piece of equipment.
I hesitated with the value rating, it is a lot of money for a frame. After riding it for a few months, I think it is worth all the money.

Yeti was not helpful in trying to resolve the issues. I have sold the frame back to the local shop after constant bickering. The shop no longer sells the yeti (if that tells you anything)I am currently riding The sc bLur so far extremely satisfied. Only been on the bike for a month. I purchased my ASR after a few frustrating and disappointing months of owning a Santa Cruz Blur. The Yeti ASR is by far a better frame than the Blur. the Yeti handles better, climbs better, and the build quality is 100% better than the Blur. No bobing (nice change from the Blur), attention to detail that is second to none.
The ASR might not be a bike for newer riders, most new riders will take years to develop skills to match the capabilities of the ASR. Its like a 16 year old kid who just learned how to drive trying to get the most out of a Porsche 911.
Weaknesses:
None, other than a big price tag. In the case of the Yeti you are getting what you paid for, a handbuilt masterpiece.

Bottom Line:
It is funny, I purchased the Santa Cruz Blur based on all of the hype. Big mistake. The Yeti is in a class by itself. This is a bike that you will keep for decades, not just one or two riding seasons. The Yeti commands respect at bike shops that are not Yeti dealers, walk the bike in and all activity in the shop stops. I have never owned a bike which bike mechanics will stop what they are doing and spend ten miniutes drooling over my bike.

Immaculate craftsmanship - apparently only 2 welders make all ASR frames and it shows, handling, paint - cleans like new & I live in a really wet part of the UK! Rear triangle poilshed aluminium so doesn't scratch - attention to detail is first class
Weaknesses:
none, only determined by component choice
Similar Products Used:
16 years of various mtbs, Epic tested & discarded
Bike Setup:
Fox Forks, Easton & XT throughout. NOKON sealed cables which are really worth the money if you live anywhere vaguely wet. A tyre with a bigger standoff like Specialized RollX seem to really help the tracking.
Bottom Line:
This is a difficult to get bike in the UK & we have to pay for the privilege, but the XT buildkit is reasonably economic & still builds into a 25.5lb bike. Reviews state that this is a race bike & subsequently it rarely gets compared to bikes such as the Blur, Epic etc. However with a 100mm fork it is the ideal all day trail bike - it climbs & descends superbly whilst still requiring technical ability. It doesn't swallow all the hits but that's not what i want in a bike. In conclusion the perfect bike that you know you'll never sell, only upgrade.

Unclear if bike was damaged during shipping or if misalignment was due to manufacturing...still not sure where it's misaligned.

Strengths:
Frame Warranty: In my estimation, the key aspect of any frame purchase is the duration of the frame warranty. Magazine reviews never mention this, I assume it’s because they don’t have to actually buy a bike and see how much use they can get out of it. The Yeti ASR has a 5 year frame warranty (compare to the SC Blur, 1 year frame warranty, or Titus Racer X, 2 year frame warranty). This implies to me that Yeti stands behind their products. If I’m going to spend this much on a bike, I want to get at least 5 years of use from it. Of course, it’s not as good as the Trek lifetime frame warranty, but who wants one of these mass-produced, white bread bikes.
Customer Service: I have not had any problems with the frame, but I did have a few build questions. Directly emailing Yeti resulted in quick, informative responses. I trust this company.
Excellent climber (if you can't climb something it's your fault, not the bikes).
Excellent descender (easy to get your weight in the right place).
Very compliant rear suspension, but still yields a laterally stiff, no flex ride
Yeti quality (tubing, welds, paint, bearings at all pivots, except one).
Ti leaf springs are brilliant in there simplicity and effectiveness Light weight.
Sounds glib, but the bike is just plain fun to ride and it looks good.
Weaknesses:
Slight 'bob' when hammering out of the saddle (not really that bad and it's easy to lock out rear shock, if you want too). The bike may benefit from a 'platform' rear shock.
Upper pivot of rear shock. This is really more of a Fox problem. The upper pivot is the standard fare Fox bushing (Fox calls them 'reducers'). This bushing has a tendency to 'dry out', corrode and stick slightly. Just take it apart and regrease it on a regular basis. This problem would not be so noticeable if it were not for the custom yeti bearings that the lower pivot uses, which is way smooth.

Bottom Line:
I know this bike is touted as a race bike, but in my opinion, it is the perfect XC trail bike. The bike is fast, responsive, light and easy to control. Perfect for single track, double track, slickrock or epic rides. Basically, the Yeti ASR is a dream ride. Don’t let other bikes blur your vision, don’t make an epic mistake, the Yeti ASR is the best bike I have ever ridden.

If you are undecided about getting a Yeti, look at it this way. How many manufacters have cult followings? How many have wed sites and fourms where fans discuss everything about one brand of bike? Only one. Yeti. I can not tell you how many people I have met who see my Yeti, tell me that they still have an 10 or 15 year old Yeti ACR or Fro, and that it is still their favorire bike.

This is my second full suspension race bike. I believe it is the best balanced, sturdy yet lightweight XC bike out there. I contemplated the Superlight,Blur and Can. Scalpel, but upon gazing on this frame I soon forgot about the other contenders. My second ride on the bike was a very hilly race. The bike proved to be a very efficient climber (even better than I expected) and a more than capable descender with its near four inches of travel. Even with the heavy fork I chose and heavy pedals the bike weighs in at an impressive 25.8 lbs. You can't miss with this one and you don't have to wait on it like you would the Blur. Strengths:
Outstanding workmanship details in both the machined rear swingarm, and within the main frame section. One of the lighter 3"+ full suspension frames on the market(5.1lbs with shock!). Progressive rear suspension action that feels much more plush then it appears, but also allows for increased traction and little bob when on the inclines. Full bearings throughout provide much more durability than bushings while also adding noticeable stiffness laterally. Many small touches abound, such as engraved "Yeti" text on all piviot bolts and on the swing link. Ti mean bling!
Weaknesses:
At first, I would think price($1700 SRP), but after considering the lessor frames offered by numerous other manufactors(many of which aren't made in the US), the Yeti is actually a great deal. Lets face it, quality is not cheap.
Similar Products Used:
Though the ASR-SL is the first full suspension frame I have ridden since the days of Pro-Flex(753), I have spent time on Trek's Fuel(not good)and Liquid(promising), Storm Lighting(excellent!), and Cannondale Scapel(race bike).
Bike Setup:
The ASR-SL frame was purchased separatly and built with the following componets: - Manitou Skareb Super Fork - Shimano XTR derailleurs and shifters - Hope Mini Discs - Cane Creek Zonos disc wheelset - Easton EC 70 post, EA 70 stem and MonkeyLite SL bar - Sella Italia SLR saddle(not as bad as you think) - Salsa Stainless skewers - IRC Serac Tubeless tires(nice!) - Cane Creek Solos headset(King Killer) - Race Face Turbine LP Crankset(ISIS) - Race Face Signature XS BB - Egg Beater pedals
Bottom Line:
Words to describe the absolute beauty and perfection of the Yeti ASR-SL simply fall to the wayside, picked up later by lessor, inferior frames. This frame has completely revised my understanding of mountain biking in addition to elevating the utter joy and experiance of even the most drab and lifeless environments. No problems in the frame buildup, perfect welds and machine work, and uncompromising paint create many stares when pedaled down a trail. The rear suspension becomes an objective, unnoticed device after the first few minutes of the ride, blending the bicycle to the rider. This, I believe, is the essence of how a bicycle shoudl perform. Weight, efficentcy loss, and the other misunderstandings of full suspension are dismissed without concern. The bike, as built, weighs 24.2lbs and, I feel, climbs as good if not better than my Yeti ARC hardtail! If you are in the market for a full suspension frame, want a domestic build with a unique decor not found in other manufactors' offerings, take a look at the Yeti ASR-SL. I do not regret my purchase.

Bottom Line:
I bought a frame and built it up myself. The price I paid is for the frame only.
I have ridden a Manitou HT since 1995. I never intended to buy a FS bike. My friends who ride FS bikes were always pushing my to try one at demo's and I would, I tried to keep an open mind but I never rode one that made me feel I needed it while owning my Mantiou.
That all changed when a local bike shop had a demo at the top of Mt. Falcon. I hopped on the Yeti AS-R and something magical happened. I needed to own this bike! Found myself trying to become an expert on the different types of suspensions and how they worked. Everything looked good on the Yeti AS-R.
The 2003 bike has some radical changes from the 2002 bike including the Ti pivots on the seat stays which help the weight and lateral rigidity and remove the need for a sealed bearing. The frame has been lightened (my medium 5.4 lbs actual w/rear shock). The 2002 had bushings where the 2003 are seal bearings.
The bottom line is I climb better, descend faster and feel less fatigued on this bike. I feel this bike can be used as a race bike or a great trail bike. I would recommend this bike to anyone with these purposes in mind.
