SOLID! plus, the air assist can make it realy stiff, the rebound works well(for all those who think otherwise-CHANGE FORK OIL)
Weaknesses:
umm...it is a bit heavy?
Bike Setup:
hardtail w/this fork
Bottom Line:
this thing works as decribed-dj and freeride.while not the lightest, this fork can take some abuse! adding air(40 psi each leg) makes it stiff enough to do anything you have balls to do! the crown looks funny, but i dont mind, ride instead. even though i bought it used, it surprised me with the stiffness and tight tracking on trails. good stuff, except the looks

Plush top end and turns ultra stiff after first 2.5 inches makes it awesome on trails, and good for drops, jumps and urban assault. 20 mm thru axle should be on every bike. Oh, sweet decals too.
Weaknesses:
Stupid dropout retention system; the flappy doo-dads tend to break, which Marzocchi says is fine but still makes me nervous...Wouldn't be such a big deal except that replacement kit runs $70.

Why make it mystery y'all? 4) I got a great deal on this fork online with a free hub for about 350. I rode the fork and have decieded its not worth it! even though it looks real cool. Strengths:
The stiffness from the QR20 plus is awesome, it's great to feel that when you're on your nose alot doing nose manuels or nosepicks or whatever. I mainly ride dirt jumps and urban with a little park riding thrown in and it is fairly good for that. I have bottomed it out off a few drops but I think that most forks with 100 mm of travel would have bottomed out
Weaknesses:
Well Marzocchi insists that this fork is made for dirt jumping, and "extreme" freeriding, and they show riders in some of their ads riding urban with it, but the funny thing for me was when I called in to let them know that the flaps to the QR20 plus had broken when riding urban they said that it wasn't covered under warrenty and that I shouldn't have been using my fork in that way. So since they said the same thing when I broke my two previous DJ2s I just shrugged and coughed up the 30 bucks for new flaps (which is a rip off). Then when they stripped out and fell off the second time when I was dirt jumping I called them again and again they said that it wasn't warrentied and that I'd have to pay for the parts, but the local bike shop was awesome about it and just gave the parts to me. So I think that if they market this fork to be a dirt jump/freeride/urban fork then they should stand behind it, and when people break it riding it in those elemants they shouldn't even hesitate in replacing it for you. Also the QR20 plus system with the flaps is just stupid, those things break too easily, I think that the manitou Hex axle and especially the Rockshox Tullio systems are FAR superior to the QR20 plus.
Similar Products Used:

Bottom Line:
This fork is pretty good... so many people on this sit just go off about how amazing this fork is, but in my experince and other riders around here it's not that great of a fork, sure it's really one of the only forks that is supposedly made for that kind of riding, but my friend has been riding a fox vanilla for almost a year now and he rides just as hard as I do and he hasn't broken any flaps (because fox forks don't NEED some bullshift qr20 system) the only gripe he has is the play that everyone seems to experince with those foxes. Still I'd rather go with a fox or a sherman, even though the foxes arn't really made for freeriding or dirt jumping, they're made for more trail riding. Currently I'm saving for a Sherman Firefly while riding trials and hopefully that will be better suited for my style of riding. Sure Marzocchi makes good forks... I know alot of people swear by them, but all this is is my personal experince with them. Make your own decisions, if you want to run the DJ1 then go ahead, I'm not saying that any of this will happen to EVERY fork...

When I nose pick or nose manual, I can see the fork flex, so I try not to look at it. Can't feel it flex, though. I love feeling the damping mechanism work on a bigger drop to a pancake or kitty-trap landing. Lets you down easy-which is nice. The valving truly feels like a 1000 dollar dh fork, even though its only 5 inches. If this fork is a testament to what Marzocchi is capable of, then they have big shoes to fill in the future. I love this fork. I have heard all kinds of bad stuff here from the aussies but I have no problems. For us big guys this is the one to use. I am 6'5" tall and about 270 lbs. Mountain bike gear is just not made for people like me and this fork holds up! I need diesel gear just to ride down the sidewalk never mind do drop offs. The best feature is the ultra-stiff springs and ability to air-preload. All other forks feel like pools of oatmeal underneath me. Granted I am a special case, most freeride stuff works great for me just as a cross-countrty rig. And I love this fork. I flex my intense fram like crazy, but there is no brake rub or wheel flex with the DJ1. I highly recomend it. I have had other Marz forks and they were pretty good, but this is by far the best. Anything is better that Mani-crap-itou.

Ok well to start off this fork has brought back some faith in Marzocchi for me. After breaking a Z5, and then two DJ2s (one of them snapped in half) I've gotta say I was pretty skeptic when Marzocchi offered me a 2003 DJ1 for only $208. I had orginally intended to buy a Sherman but this was just too good of a deal to pass up so I took it and asked them to reduce the travel to 110 mm b/c you don't need 5 inches when you're dirt jumping and riding urban alot...I almost wish I had 80 mm. Anyways...this fork DOES feel alot stiffer than my last couple of Marz and just about as stiff as my friends Sherman Breakout. I've gotta admit it looks awesome on my bike and it's giving me alot more confidence than my old creaking DJ2s that would flex with every nose mauel and nose pick.
Weaknesses:
Well the one thing that was REALLY noticable right out of the shop was that these thing were REALLY plush. They seemed to bottom out almost too easily. So I put in some air in the air assist valve to hopefully couunter it but I still notice it when I do the occasional bunny hop gap/drop over the sidewalk into the street, but with a little finesse and body language you can land smoothly and the fork takes it fine. Secondly, the fork seems to top out and make a clunking noise when I pull up really suddenly for bunny hop to manuels etc...but my friends DJ3 does that too. Lastly, on the QR20 there are these metal "feet" that go below the axle to lock it in place and I had them strip out on me one day when I was pivoting on the nose off a ledge and the screws just stripped themselves out and shot off (from the pressure on the fork I'm guessing), but that wasn't a real confidence maker to have screws shooting off your fork. So I had to wait a few weeks for Marzocchi to look at it and then send me a new one (for 40 DOLLARS...). After that it was pretty much alright.
2003 specialized P3 frame (med), set up single speed with a 34 tt mrp sprocket in the front and a 14 in the back. Evil bikes bash guard (awesome), 2003 DJ1 (110 mm), kore B52 stem (45 mm), azonic double wall risers (2.5 in rise), avid 7 inch disc brakes (best brakes i've ever used) maxxis larsen tt dh 2.0 tires (these things roll SOO fast when riding street and dirt) alex super sigma in back and a rhyno lite in front (soon to be trail pimps front and back), kona chromo tublar cranks, atomlab aircorps pedals (best pedals) T.H.E. jumping seat
Bottom Line:
The bottom line is that this fork is PRETTY good. I'm not gonna say it's amazing like almost everyone else on this site does...maybe it's just this town that has problems with Marzocchi forks...I don't completely not trust anymore and after seeing their 2004 line of forks I'm thinking about either an 888 or the Sherman double crown for my dualie. Still there's the flex when ur on ur nose that I don't feel in Shermans and that's the main thing I don't like. I don't think I'd ride anything else than these or Shermans for what I ride (DJ, urban, park, occasional trail rides). If you ride like I do than I'd stongly consider these or the Sherman Firefly...or if you can wait till 2004 for the new DJs from Marzocchi and the new Sherman DJ from manitou (that's what I'm gonna be getting). Keep riding!

this fork is a beast...i have smashed the myself and the bike it is on to pieces and it just keeps takeing hits it has about 5 inces of travel but it feels like 7 or 8 the QR20 axels are a big plus the break in period on this fork was only about 2 drops, it felt stiff at first but after a few hits it broke right in oh... and the bladed fork legs and M crown look wicked cool too
Weaknesses:
The springs were a bit heavy for me, but i am light at 150lbs and marzocchi makes getting softer springs very, very easy

Bottom Line:
This fork totally rules, there has been some bashing of marzocchi on the site but i have broken evry part on my bike except this awsome fork, the break in period is nearly nothing and the smooth stroke and awsome dampning make it feel like 7 or 8 inces. The new cryofit crown does not rock loose and the fork dosen't flex (yhea QR20) so if you are a hard core east coast trail rider, a drop craveing masacist a downhill racer or...well...a dirt jumper at least demo this fork, and oh yheait looks really good to...so don't be fooled by these people saying marzocchi sucks...because it dosen't

the crown looks funny but its strong so whatever... also the weight may be a problem if you are used to light forks (which i am not, so it worked out well)

Bottom Line:
ok i ride mainly street and technical XC style trails which mainly consist of short steep climbs and short freeride downs and drops. i ride an occasional dh/ds race, and i am learning dirt jumps...this fork is perfect for my needs...big step up from past years' zoke forks (especially the '02 dj-1 which sucked)..i can see why someone would hesitate buying one of these '03 dj1's mainly on how bad the '02 dj1's sucked, but i assure you that the problems are fixed. u really notice the extra stiffness on abubacas and 180's and this allows you to roll out easier fakie and lets you keep your momentum easier. marzocchi's customer service is AMAZING. i dont understand why so many people had such a hard time, and i dont understand why they are ruining the poll by complaining about '02 models. my freind got this fork from zoke for $250 because he broke his '02 wedge fork and they warranteed it. they were very nice and sent him a free qr20 hub with it ($60 value). anyways buy it...if you ride a lot more freeride trails and you are all about the adjustments then get an '03 z-1 sl or a fox 125rlc. but if you dirt jump and ride street, or just dont need/want to fool around with fancy overrated adjustments then get this fork because its got the best bang for your buck. it's simple, and the simpler the better IMO.

Strengths:
It has held up so well. The Marzocchi Dirt Jumper 1 has withheld huge jumps: 20 footers with 10 foot drops, 50 to 70 foot doubles and 40 foot table top and many road jumps. I recommend this fork to any one; simple rider to vigorous and smooth to harsh and thrashing. To the person who discriminated against Marzocchi above, their customer service is extremely wonderful; I brought a 6 yr-old Z-1 Drop-off in and they took in the old battered fork and gave a new Dirt Jumper 1 for 200 bucks with free quick-release axle, seat, and shock pump. They hooked me up!
Weaknesses:
None other than it only has 4.68 in. of travel.

The DJ 1 is amazing in its strength and plushness.

K nathan...I have two friends who ride 2003 dj 1s, one who rides a 2003 dj 3, and one on a 2003 dj 2 QR 20. All four forks have developed play, the DJ 3 quite badly, and one of the Dj 1s tops out all the time. You say that Marzocchi has improved, witch is true, the stanchions are largers, and so are the legs, but they still seem to break down over a short period (2 months or so). When I talked to Marzocchi on the phone, they made it sound like there was NO way that it could have been a manufacture defect, it had to have been my fault, but I've ridden 3 forks and each time they've broken in the same place, and I've had friends who have had it happen to them to. Each time, the local shop sends them back to Marzocchi in california, and each time on the phone when they call for a RA, the guy on the phone says "It broke? Where? On the stanchion near the crown? I've NEVER heard of that before". Each time. How could they not know? Marzocchi has some work to do. I'm glad that your Marzocchis are working good for you, but I know alot of people who have had problems. I've ridden a few Foxes, and they feel alot more stiff and solid than any marzocchi that I've ridden, except for dual crowns (I've ridden alot of marzocchis, trust me, I used to swear by them). Also another friend of mine just got a Manitou Sherman break out, and while that fork has the new 1.5 steer tube, if the other shermans feel as good as that one, I'm sold. He's been riding it for 3 monthes now with no problem. That beats all the new marzocchis. So, yes, marzocchis have improved, but still, I think that the new manitous and foxes had improved MUCH further. If you want to get a Marzocchi, then go ahead, I still think that they make good products, but with MY experince (and my friends) I think that there's better products out there. I'm not trying to say that ALL marzocchis are bad, my biggest complaint is Marzocchis reps, and customer service.

Bottom Line:
Good fork for the cash thats for sure. For the fool below me, try to actually write a review for the fork. I cannot see an occurence of you actually talking about the fork in your bottom line rant. Marzocchi actually seems to have improved quite a bit over last years forks. Dont bust in here and bring down this products rating, have they screwed you over with this EXACT fork? No it seems you have issues with the 2002, so post in the right topic buddy.

Strengths:
These forks really feel great, they're stiff (usually), plush in their travel, and they look good.
Weaknesses:
I've been riding Marzocchis for over two years now, I started out on a Z5, which came on my 2002 P.3, I broke that, and Marzocchi sent me a 2002 dirt jumper two, under warrenty. Two monthes or so later, I snapped that fork in half on the stancions, and when I had my LBS send it back to Marzocchi, they said that it wasn't under warrenty because I was using the product in ways that it wasn't ment to be used. Soo dirt jumpin on a dirt jumper isn't allowed? I also ride street and park, but my main style is dirt jumping. I paid 200 for a new DJ 2, which I had for only half a year, when the upper stancion on the right side, near the crown split, spewing oil everywhere. My LBS called Marzocchi again and was told that it'd be under warrenty and that they could either fix it for free (rebuild), or send me a 2003 DJ 1 for 280. I just bought a new car, so I'm pinching pennies, and I asked them to fix it for me. So yesterday they called back the shop and said that it's not going to be under warrenty, because the fork has been "abused". When I called the guy to ask him what the deal was, his words were, "well the fork has dings on it, it has obviously been trashed". I said so you're not warrentying it because it has dings on it? I told him that I dirt jump, as the name on the fork suggests, and I asked him if the forks were actually made for DIRT JUMPING, or if that was just a name. His reply was "I dirt jump too, and I must weigh at least 250 pounds, and I don't break any forks" This kids name was Chad. Soo then I said "So you arn't warrentying my fork because I've been using it for it's intended purpose? And he said "you can argue with me all you want, but the bottom line is it's not going to be warrentied". This is the 3rd fork I've broken, the 1st one was warrentied, the second one I had to pay for, and now this one I have to pay for also. I have at least 6 friends here in Ashland who have broken either z5s or dirt jumpers and all of them have had their fork warrentied. Basically, Marzocchi has TERRIBLE customer service, they won't listen to how their forks fault and break, and they won't warrenty my dirt jumper 2, after I broke it dirt jumping. What kind of company is this? I used to love their forks, but I think that from now on I'm going to take my business elsewhere, maybe Manitou with the new Sherman, or Fox. I suggest that if you're considering a dirt jumper fork, or any marzocchi for that matter, I'd do the same. A friend of mine rides a Fox vanilla 125 and was having problems and he called Fox and they helped him right out.

Bottom Line:
As I said above, Marzocchi has been NO help at all with this fork. All they keep saying is that they'll cut me a deal on an 03 DJ3 and how it'll be better and I should be happy with that. They won't listen to how alot of kids I know have broken Marz forks by just riding like they usually do (dirt jumping, trials, skate park, urban), and they don't care that I broke it dirt jumping, wich the fork is supposedly made for. All they say is that there's "dings" and that I must be "casing those jumps pretty hard". They can come up here to Ashland and ride with me for a day, or for a week, or I don't care how long, they'll see that I'm one of the smoothest jumpers in town. Bottom line....don't buy marzocchi.

Strengths:
Over all excellent forks. Responsive on traverses even with 130mm travel. Solid. Rebound control works well. Greatly improved my confidence on the bigger jumps. Working it back up to the top is easy, hardly any compression, but supple on the way down.
Weaknesses:
The quick release on the QR20 was stolen while the bike was on the rack of my car and Marzocchi have been useless in finding a replacement. It has been three weeks.

Bottom Line:
If you ride Nth Shore style or fast not too full-on downhill with mild jumps, go for it. Beware of the quick release though. Easily stolen.

upon receiving my forks i ugraded the springs to the green h.d.s as i weigh 235 lbs.my wheel frame and headset are all top shelf so if the fork had any weaknesses it would very obvious. i use the forks on my freeride hardtail offroad and for some urban here in downtown ottawa. i'm a bit of a hack at this stuff but the fork has been very confidence inspiring and forgiving when i f-up.if you want more info on my rig i'll be happy to for ward that to interested parties so that thet can guage for themselves why the fork has to work well (and it does)
Weaknesses:
the little retention devices under the qr20 are a pain to use after i had my fork custom painted. this is a 2002 fork and i understand this isn't an issue on 2003 models
