a Racer
from Wayzata, MN, USADate Reviewed: August 27, 2005
Strengths: Light, Well rounded, Strong braking, Nice finish, Durable bike.Weaknesses: Rated for 8-11 year olds, but the cranks are too long at 170mm to race with at that age. Bottom bracket has a LOT of friction. However, removing, and lubing, and re-installing the BB with less torque provides some relief, but still needs to be upgraded. Rear hub is embarassingly eccentric, both freewheels wobble badly, (Flip-flop hub) and the chain tension goes from perfect, to WAY too loose, just by spinning the wheel because of the lack of concentricity on the hub threads. Hub bearings are very rough as well.Bottom Line: For riding around it is a great bike as is. For racing (it is an "Expert" model), the cranks are too long for 8-11 year olds. Hubs, and Bottom Bracket all need to be upgraded or it is a nightmare to even tension the chain, and adjust the bike for low friction. It is frustrating watching the chain deflect up and down 3/8 to 1/2 of an inch by spinning the rear wheel, and adding that to the front sprocket's elognation. Modern machining should be able to produce concentric hubs, and cranks, but in Taiwan I have learned, if they look like hubs, they must be hubs. It would be nice to see some smooth, round, parts installed on it from the factory, and It would be a winner.
Duration Product Used: 1 Year
Price Paid:
$279.00
Purchased At: Bike Store
Similar Products Used: My son is 9, not for him to compare others to. However, Years of quality Old School Products and many, many years of tuning bikes, makes comparison easy.
Bike Setup: Now it has Cartrige hubs and nicer rims installed, a new BB, and it has 160mm cranks installed on it. Much better now that the wheels and cranks actually spin freely, and he can pedal without loping from side to side!
