Strengths:    Light

Weaknesses:    After about 6 months of use, the frame broke at the front weld. Kona refuses to warranty the bike saying I used it too hard. I am 60 lbs and 9 years old. When I got the bike, we were told it was a high end kids bike and would stand up to anything a kid my age could do.

Bottom Line:
Not worth the money if it can't last more than 6 months. My parents agreed to buy a high end bike thinking it would outlast me, my younger brother and sister. Now, I have no bike.

Date Reviewed: August 29, 2002

Strengths:    Excellent size and weight. I am 9 years old and a little on the short size. The seat goes down plenty low enough for me and I don't have to reach too far for the handlebars
The steering is perfect and I like to go fast in the single track trails - very fast. I like the great Kona graphics (blue and white). I like the Hula because it is just perfect for my size and age.

Weaknesses:    The tires don't have the best traction. I am going to try to get bigger tires this winter - something with more grip for the mud and roots.

Bottom Line:
I don't think that my parents could have found a better "real" mountain bike for me. This bike will be able to take any kind of riding I want to do until I grow out of it. I may start to do some racing this Fall. I think that Simon's Cycles has some of the best bikes around that I like.

Are Those Hula Hoops?

Most interesting, what is this cyclist carrying? Also of interest in the article, you can also read about how Columbia, Missouri has had a cyclist harassment ordinance for 3 years but has not issued any citations. Triple crank on 24" or not? Water bottle on Hula?

Looking at the 7 spd Hotrock without the triple, vs the Hotrock with and the Kona Hula with for an 8 yr old. Do your kids use the triple crank in front? Lots of extra weight there if not used. I notice from the website that the Hula does not have a water bottle mount either, looks like a deal ... Read More »

Hula hoop bushes - size for Prophet?

Hi there. I would like to upgrade/ change the bushes on my Prophet and have found a website that sells them. However, my bike is currently stored elsewhere so I cannot measure the size before ordering from this website [URL="http://www.mountainbikecomponents.co.uk/items.asp?CategoryID=92&Name=Str ... Kona Hula, buy 2009 or wait for 2011?

I can't find a 2010 Hula anywhere and the 2011s come out in 2 weeks or so, probably not delivered until a month maybe? However, I found a Kona dealer about 4 hours away that has 3 2009s, 2 of the red and 1 of the purple. We are going through there next week on vacation and could pick it up ... Read More »

Kona Hula and a little fellow's shifting woes....

This is my son's first real bike, discounting the wal-mart fodder he's been on before now..:D He's 8 years old and smart as a tack, but the gears confound him a bit. Any suggestions on how to gently and properly teach him how to use the gears?Read More »
