Date Reviewed: August 23, 2009
Favorite Trail:Marshall Canyon
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Purchased At:Borrowed/Borrowing
Strengths:Fast, Good Frame
Weaknesses:Derailleur/Shifters, Shocks (Omni)
Similar Products Used:Giant Sedona, Vertical PK7
Bike Setup:Default/Original Setup
Bottom Line:This Bike isn't for serious mountain bikers. The shocks could be better though you can ride up curbs. In other words it's good on the road (could be lighter but not heavy) but not the trails.

PS I'm borrowing it from my neighbor.

Favorite Trail:any that I find
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $310.00
Purchased At:Don"s Bike Center
Strengths:Great frame. I've been hit by four cars since I bought the bike and the frame is still straight.
Weaknesses:cheap stock pedals. front forks arn't the best for off road. Shifter needs constant attention after a trail
Similar Products Used:Specialized
Bike Setup:Shimano clip in pedals. Other than that it's stock.
Bottom Line:Great beginner bike. But not the best for any extreme trails.

Submitted by byron a Cross Country Rider from tamworth
Date Reviewed: May 11, 2008
Favorite Trail:what ever i can find
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $300.00
Strengths:I live up north and have had this bike for five years. i ride four seasons and all i can say is that it has out preformed anything else if have used. The frame is rock solid. The fork takes anything I throw at it. The trigger shifters are great. when the brakes are calibrated they work just as well as disks.
Weaknesses:The fork does not work to well on the small stuff. you have to push the shifter for the front derailleur a little bit past the three mark to get it to shift. it does not shift well under presser and i just broke the rear derailleur (but that is the only thing that has gone wrong on this bike.)
Bike Setup:stock
Bottom Line:the bottom line is this is the best bike you will find for under five hundred and will last forever no matter how hard you beat on it. this bike is great for any rider from a beginner to a seasoned veteran of the trails

Favorite Trail:Rocky Ridge
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $285.00
Purchased At:Gung Ho Bikes
Strengths:The frame is strong, light and sturdy. Love the shifters, never had any issues with shifting on any terrain.
Weaknesses:Peddles and fork are cheap, could be up graded for the off roader but they get the job done. They dont make the M40 anymore but I think the Raleigh 5.5 is close to the same!
Similar Products Used:Specialized HardRock Sport. (nice bike but more $$ than the M40)
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:I am a cheap cat in and out. I did my share of research and for the money this bike is the best! I have used my bike in all conditions not only off road, and I have been very pleased!
I was worried when all my friends bought $600 bikes this year and I didn't. However at the end of the trails my M40 is always in the mix of things!

Strengths:The Gel Seat rocks , the overall experience is worthwhile! do not let others that slam this "MADE IN THE USA" bike tell you otherwise.
Weaknesses:no rear shock.
Similar Products Used:HUMMER XL 21 speed by Montague USA
Bottom Line:GET IT, it's a solid built AMERICAN MADE bike. It doesn't do fancy tricks, or long jumps, or whatever...IT'S MADE IN THE USA !! a great bike for ppl that don't want to spend a fortune on a sport or venture that they might not like. Don't blame the the bike, blame the rider. ENJOY YOURSELF!! And Ride a good bike, no matter what you choose!!

Date Reviewed: November 26, 2005
Favorite Trail:Ray's indoor MTB park
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $330.00
Purchased At:Century Cycles
Strengths:Frame is solid, components work well overall
Weaknesses:Handlebars bend EASILY, shock definetly does not have 2.5" of travel, or even close to that
Similar Products Used:Giant, Trek, Kona
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:Great begginer bike, but If you have one and you're looking to upgrade for a more comfy ride, try to do what I did (look for someone with a broken 2004/2003 M-40 or M-50 and offer them $50 for it, then take the shock off that bike and put it on yours). For the money, this bike hold up well. Except the shock. I really hated the original shock. A lot.

Favorite Trail:Kettle/palos
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $200.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Solid frame, easy to upgrade...the frame alone is worth the cost of the bike.
Weaknesses:Overall...what do you expect for $200?
Similar Products Used:GT, KHS, Haro, Giant
Bike Setup:Basic Shimano, nothing high-end.
Bottom Line:Here's the bottom line, I don't know what that moron below me was thinking he was going to get for what he paid. If your new to MTB and don't want to spend too much this bike is perfect. If you don't get into MTB then you didn't spend a fortune for nothing. However, I've upgraded the hell out of mine in the last few months from parts from ebay/nashbar. It's now as good as a $600 bike and I've only spent $300 in upgrading as I needed it.

Favorite Trail:I couldn't tell you that!
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $250.00
Purchased At:Cole's
Strengths:It's a fairly nice bike for extreme beginners.
Weaknesses:After about 2 months it get really boring to ride and you want to kick yourself for being dumb enough t buy it.
Bike Setup:Stock except for Shimano M115 clipless pedals.
Bottom Line:Don't waste your money a Raleigh. Even if you're new the sport, buy a nice bike that you won't have to replace in a couple months.

Submitted by Brian Hughes a Weekend Warrior from Albuquerque, NM, USA
Date Reviewed: August 8, 2002
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $210.00
Purchased At:NorthEast Cyclery
Strengths:Easy on the budget. Solid, dependable ride. Has always shifted very smoothly and dependably. Set up for easy upgrades, if desired.
Weaknesses:Stock pedals seem rather cheap, and I damaged one while riding a mountain trail without doing anything major to cause the damage. I ended up purchasing better pedals.
Similar Products Used:None used, looked at numerous others MTBs while shopping. This one seemed to have the best value/price ratio.
Bike Setup:Added gel saddle, thorn proofing, and a rack and front fender for commuting (I know adding a fender and rack is probably a sin for a true MTB'er, but a face full of wet mud isn't cool when walking into the office at work).
Bottom Line:This is a great bike for my uses--mostly commuting 8 miles each way to/from work and also playing on some of the easier level trails in the Sandia Mountains on weekends. This bike probably wouldn't be the right choice if you're a hardcore expert MTB'er. The components aren't high end. But the components (except for a pedal) have all work well for me under my type of use. But I doubt they would hold up under extreme conditions.

Strengths:6061 Aluminum frame is excellent quality, especially the welds. Its also built in the USA. Quality of finish and assembly is good. Brakes appear to be adequate even during more spirited downhill riding on singletrack.
Weaknesses:The RST Omni shocks developed a 'knock' after 100 miles of riding (50% offroad). The mechanic at my dealer told me that it was nothing to worry about and that it was not uncommon for these shocks to develop a knock after the bushings got worn in. Not a problem, but an irritation nonetheless. The stock Kenda tire on the front seems to wash out without warning, especially on loose gravel and sand. Rear derailler needs continual post ride tune ups after offroad riding.
Similar Products Used:Trek 4300
Bike Setup:Specialized Rockhopper seat, Cat Eye onboard computer, Specialized clip-on pedals, Zoom 1 1/8" stem adapter, Ritchey Pro stem, Ritchey Comp bars. (Easton seatpost on the way!)
Bottom Line:For anyone, such as I, seeking an entry level bike to cut their teeth on the mtb scene this bike would be a choice worth contemplating. The aluminum frame and quality of finish was a big selling point for me, and is worthy of being 'tricked out' with a few upgrades. A $250 bike will never be without the problems already mentioned (particularly when spending most of its life offroad) but if you can live with them you'll enjoy the Raliegh M40.

Submitted by Shareef a Weekend Warrior from Corpus Christi, TX, USA
Date Reviewed: April 18, 2002
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $260.00
Purchased At:The Pedal (CORPUS CHRISTI)
Strengths:Excellent ride. Very easy to handle on the streets and off rode. Shifting system is smooth and adds to the overall performance of the bike.
Weaknesses:A little heavy. (but still very nice)
Similar Products Used:Puegot
Bike Setup:Factory with odometer, and front and back lights.
Bottom Line:Much better than department store bikes, and not expensive enough to turn away the beginner to novice rider. Plus its made in the USA, what more can you ask for. True offroad riders may opt for full suspion bikes but the M40 will not disappoint any skill level rider.
