Strengths:    Fit (after you get them on) riding comfort, build quality, slide around on the saddle nicely

Weaknesses:    waistband is too tight, sizes aren't really accurate. i mean come on, I weigh 168 and stand 5'10" and i had to get a large

Bottom Line:
These are fine shorts. I've tried on a few Nema's over the years and they never fit or felt right. These are all day shorts.

Strengths:    Extremely comfortable, breathe well

Weaknesses:    chamois fits a little weird

Bottom Line:
I have four pair of mountain biking shorts, and these are always my first choice to wear, even though my other shorts cost a lot more and are from bigger brands. The chamois is a bit big, but it actually works just as good as my Oakley one and a hell of a lot better than the one in my Fox shorts.
They're comfortable to ride in, and I forget them, which is the best thing you can say for what you're wearing when you're riding.

Strengths:    Well-designed, plenty of pockets.

Weaknesses:    Chamois is pretty weak, but better than nothing. Wish I'd noticed the Pricepoint brand shorts before I'd ordered.

Bottom Line:
Order the next larger size. Waist is ok, but is tough getting over the arse (cosider myself to have a normal size keister).

Date Reviewed: February 2, 2007

Strengths:    Great looks, nice chamios, intergrated inner, comfortable when not riding

Weaknesses:    The elastic draw string kinks in the toggle, the side kicks are so shallow that everything falls out of them when you sit down (unless you zip it), too hot to wear in really high temps

Bottom Line:
I like these shorts. In fact, I like them a lot more than I expected. They look sharp and they're very comfortable. The weaknesses that I listed are a nuisance but none of them are deal breakers. After years of riding in spandex, I bought these as an experiment. When I mountain bike, or even when I throw my leg over my fixie, I look for these shorts first. The chamois is very comfortable.

The only time I wished I'd worn my spandex was when I rode in 105 degree weather. And really, how much difference would that of made?

You can't buy Nema Jewel or Crown Jewel shorts anymore!

I just now figured this out. WTF. And no, I haven't been living in a cave. I owned 2 pairs of Jewel shorts. The first pair lasted about 6 years, and I still have the second pair, they must be close to 6 years old. Those things are indestructible! All I could find on their website was Podium ... Crank The Shield – The New Crown Jewel of Ontario

I would like to give Adam and Sean a well deserved standing ovation on a separate post here. They have reached new heights of genius in putting together an event this large, and doing it right the first time. Many organizers take years to get it right. They have put an event on the Ontario calend ... Read More »

SPAM: my roadie SS IF crown jewel etc

I really hate to sell this thing but it simply doesn't fit. Too small:( I finally dialed the seatpost in and there's nearly a 4" drop to the bars. All parts are 3 weeks old besides the frame, fork, headset and seatpost/stem. to save some of you time unless you are looking for parts too, I'd sa ... Read More »

About the Nema Crown Jewel sizing...

For those that use the Nema Crown Jewel, what size did you get and what size street pants do you wear? Do the Nema shorts fit small or larger for a given size? Do these shorts have cinch straps or 1 or 2 size wiggle room? Generally, I am a 33 waist. I wear medium or large[/ ... Read More »
