Date Reviewed: September 8, 2005
Favorite Trail:Tweespruit - Caledon 200
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $200.00
Strengths:Comfort & quality
Weaknesses:Pricey
Similar Products Used:Mostly local SA brands (Cape Storm & Anatomic), also Velotex and Addidas
Bike Setup:S-Works and SC Blur
Bottom Line:The review is for the Fl-13. Only used it once - Baviaanskloof race (230km). I spent 12 hours in the saddle (20+ water crossings) with no discomfort at all. Took them straight out of the box, i.e. no special prep (washing, wearing in, etc.)

Two days after the event I did my first training (using another brand of pants) - I experienced no problems at all.

I did the Cape Epic on Cape Storm's bibs - developed one sore on the 7th day (730km). Guess I am not prone to problems in my neither region - still the CE would have been much more pleasureable on the Assos. But buying three pairs would be very expensive.

Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $170.00
Purchased At:colorado cyclist
Strengths:Comfortable and well fitting
Weaknesses:Cost - some discomfort on long rides
Similar Products Used:PI shorts - ultrasensor and microsensor
Bike Setup:Litespeed ARenburg, shimano ultegra, selle italia trans am seat, speedplay zeroes
Bottom Line:Great product BUT they start to chafe me on long (over 40) mile rides.
the PI ultrasensor is the most comfortable I have ridden at 1/2 the cost.
I love these shorts, but there are better values out there.

Date Reviewed: August 5, 2003
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:Fit, comfort and quality
Weaknesses:Cost. The little "Assos" emblem which was only glued on came off the front and back after a few washings. No big deal since I like them better without.
Similar Products Used:PI Micro and a bunch of others
Bike Setup:Do you really care?
Bottom Line:The best bibs money can buy. As with everything in life, you get what you pay for. Fit and comfort is unbelievable and unmatched. You don't even know you have them on after hours in the saddle. I have 3 pair. Once you have worn a pair of these, you are spoiled and will never wear another short. It is a bit of a hassle putting on chamois cream after washing, but it only takes a minute and keeps them soft and actually helps kill any bacteria. They say you don't have to wash them after every ride if you use the cream. If you get a pair, you will understand!!

Submitted by Paul a Racer from Heidelberg, Germany
Date Reviewed: July 11, 2003
Favorite Trail:Silvretta Gebiet, Österreich
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $200.00
Purchased At:Biker's Paradise, Heidelberg
Strengths:Amazing fit--the insert is what my a$$ would now refer to as "to die for"!
Weaknesses:Price
Similar Products Used:Performance shorts, multiple Pearl Izumi shorts, Axo shorts
Bike Setup:Storck Adrenaline Pro
Bottom Line:This review is actually for the new FI.13 from Assos. Even though this short seems to be aimed at the roadie, they work just as good for off-road riding. I got em in black cause black is oh so sexy. I used to ride in baggies, but tights just are so much better, even if you look like a beauty gueen on the bike. Plus, I haven't found a baggie with a chamois describable as high quality. I don't get it...why would I need less crotch protection with a baggie versus a tight. What is up wit dat? The insert is now made of an elastic material. I don't know what they did with the chamois technically, but the comfort level of these shorts is just a world above all of the competition. You really just have to try these on for a ride to see what you get. How can I tell you how they'll react to your a$$! They are expensive as hell (even more so in the U.S. considering the weak dollar now). I paid Euro 169 for these here in Germany. Yeah, it's a lot, but my a$$ and it's comfort is worth it to me...what do I earn my money for, if not to blow it on MTB related goods??? And hey, these give me a good feelin that I won't be shooting blanks in 20 years time!

Strengths:Fit and quality. The best!
Weaknesses:None other than the price.

Bottom Line:If you do any sort of "long rides" these things fit like glue. Super comfortable but you get what you pay for.

Wish they were a little cheaper.

Favorite Trail:any singletrack
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $110.00
Purchased At:De Grandi's
Strengths:The shape of the shammy
Comfort
Colour (black)
Weaknesses:A bit pricey at over $200 Au
Similar Products Used:Too many
Bike Setup:Which one?
Bottom Line:The shaped chamois in these shorts lift your scrote of the seat which alot of others don't. This is great for people who are a little delicate downstairs.
Chamois is also comfy on the rear end.
Best I've used.

Date Reviewed: February 5, 2001
Duration Product Used:3 months
Purchased At:Gift
Strengths:Weight, pad, stiching, cut
Weaknesses:They are how much?
Similar Products Used:Perl Izumi, Peformance, Nashbar
Bottom Line:I would have never paid this much for a pair of shorts, but I was fortunate enough to get them for a gift. I now understand the difference between these shorts and a $75 pair. They are incredibly comfortable, extremely well made, and cut perfectly. The only bad thing is that now I don't want to wear any of my other shorts.....

Favorite Trail:tailwind
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:Fit, materials and quality of workmanship
Weaknesses:Price
Similar Products Used:Giordana and Pearlizumi bibs
Bike Setup:Vortex
Bottom Line:I have two pair. One over 12 years old with a synthetic chamois and one over 6 years old with a real chamois. The latter are better made although they require the use of chamois creme when used. The older pair had a problem with the padding when the bonding deteriorated but that was fixed with a couple of well placed stiches. Comfort and fit are superb. You get what you pay for although on an absolute basis, they're quite expensive. I bought both on sale.

Favorite Trail:
Alpine Loop
Duration Product Used:
3 months
Strengths:
All Day Comfort
Build Quality
Weaknesses:
Need Chamois Cream
Price !
Similar Products Used:
ALL Of Them !
Bottom Line:I can't believe I would pay $160 for a pair of
bike shorts ! Once I got over that I marveled at
their all day comfort after 7.5 hours in the saddle. These are the only shorts that I don't even notice during epic rides. These shorts do require some sort of chamois cream to be comfortable. To keep costs down I only use these shorts on rides over two hours. These are the best shorts I have ever used in 32 years of serious cycling.
