Favorite Trail:boggs mtn demo forest
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $100.00
Purchased At:avenue cyclery SF
Strengths:love/hate relationship with neoprene
overall comfort
durability of UPPERS
stiff platform
second layer of sole holes up even though the black lugged part deteriorates
nice, substantial feel to them
Weaknesses:love/hate relationship with neoprene
what happened to the black rubber on the sole?
Similar Products Used:sidi techno fire, various specialized and shimano shoes, lightweight hiking boots (back in the day)
Bike Setup:shimano PD-747. what does the whole bike have to do with this?
Bottom Line:my shimano M 150's are now retired to commuter status, starting christmas day 2002. i am surprised that so many of you have such awful and vitriolic things to say about these shoes, as they have served me well over two race seasons and many, many miles of riding in all conditions--including some snow.

that said, let me talk about the neoprene bootie that shimano never saw fit to use on any other of thier shoes that i can think of. the idea is OK on paper, but iffy in real world applications. i found that the bootie DID make my ankles feel a bit warmer while i was hiking through the snow in downieville, and they also keep small pebbles and stuff out of your shoes while you're riding on roads/trails covered with loose gravel or sand. the down side of the booties is that they can make the shoes a massive pain to put on if you're mildly incoherent from an evening of heavy drinking and/or substance abuse, or perhaps exhausted from five laps of twenty four hour racing. at any rate, i am glad shimano has ditched the bootie on thier later shoes.

these shoes are comfortable too, with or without the bootie. i'd been using a pair of sidis for the two years prior to my purchase of the shimano shoes (1998). shimano's 150's are a bit more padded around the ankle and tongue than the sidis, which would easily make the shimano shoes my choice for two hour plus rides. the shimano shoe also has an insole that is much thicker and more comfortable than the sidi. they're heavier shoes, but when it comes down to a weight versus comfort trade off, i'll lean towards comfort, especially in shoes or clothing.

these shoes are also durable. i've used them as my primary off road shoe for more than three years now, and the uppers, tongue and inside of the shoes are still stitched almost as well as the day i purchased them. the rubber lugs/knobs which are bonded/glued to the yellow platforms has crumbled into nearly nothing, but who using these shoes as hiking boots anyway? the lugs/knobs and platform around the cleat pocket has held up, and in a MTB shoe, the shoe/cleat/pedal interface is the are which needs to hold up the best anyway. my right sidi's platform cracked in half after less than one year of off road riding and the shoe had to be replaced by sidi.

all in all, the only bone to pick i have with shimano about these shoes is the apparent un-durability of the soles.i'm hoping that the new shoes which were just given to me as a christmas gift hold up better in this area, and even so, i'm not complaining too much about the 150's. so what if the rubber on the bottom crumbled, it took a year and a half to start deteriorating and i was still using the shoes for every off road ride i took three years after i got them. if they were still available today, i might even consider buying another pair. i'm sold on shimano shoes now, and the rockasaki M 150's were the cycling shoe that clinched the sale.

Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $130.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Great traction, neoprene keeps junk out, cool shoe in the summer
Weaknesses:Initially, had to cut small amount of rubber from sole to get proper cleat engagement on my Shimano 545 pedals. After adjustment, no weaknesses.
Similar Products Used:Adidas, Sidi
Bike Setup:Rocky Mountain Thin Air, XTR, Black Elite, WTB New Paradigm wheelset.
Bottom Line:Sorry to hear other readers had bad experiences with them, but I have loved them. My only regret is that I'll probably never be able to find another pair. Sole has given me no problems whatsoever, and I ride over 12 hours a week offroad. Aluminum cleats show wear, but that is why they are replaceable. And I do my share to abuse the cleats. Rubber sole is wearing predictably. No delamination, no problems with straps.

Neoprene sock is the greatest, wish they still had this feature. I ride in grassy areas with lots of seeds, thorns and burrs and I never get any foreign objects in my shoes.

Love this shoe. Will buy Shimano again.

Strengths:Comfortable, neoprene keeps the stuff out, good traction when hiking the bike.
Weaknesses:Absorb water. Heavy.
Similar Products Used:Sidi, Specialized.
Bike Setup:Litespeed Owl Hollow hardtail. XT with RS Sid XC. Panaracer Fire XT. Shimano M-858.
Bottom Line:There have been a lot of negative reviews on these shoes and I know they aren't available anymore anyway, but I just wanted to weigh in. I got these on sale 2 years ago and, after reading the reviews, expected the worst, but after riding them up here in the tough northeast, I have to say I have been more than satisfied. They have been through ice and snow, swamps and river crossings, and just plain ol' mountain bike conditions and held up pretty darn well. Nothing has torn off of 'em, they are great for when you have to get off the bike and walk, which I do a lot of, and they have kept my feet reasonably comfy on the cold winter days. If I could get another pair, for the same money, I would surely do it. I haven't seen any shoe that is all things to all people, so until I do, I will keep experimenting with different shoes and manufacturers. Sorry you took a hit on these, Shimano, but I find them ok. (Wish I could say the same for your M-858's.) Considering the cost of good mtb shoes these days, I give'm 4 flamers and for their overall toughness and longevity in some pretty rough conditions, I give'm 5.

Strengths:Look good, decent grip in mud when 'crossing.
Weaknesses:Is only a decent shoe for 'crossing: big lugs on sole tear off, big aluminum studs make you slip on rock or logs, last is extremely narrow and toe box is wierdly shaped and small, and what does the neoprene cuff do again?
Similar Products Used:Older Shimano (much better), Northwave, Answer.
Bottom Line:These are the worst shoes I've owned. They'd be good for a season of cyclocrossing, but I don't cyclocross and I was hoping they'd be good for more than a year. Tight fit when I bought them, hoped thy'd loosen up - no luck. They got wet and the toe box collapsed - every long ride I'd end up with a purple toenail. 3-strap closure was good, and no problems with stitching, but I'm very glad I have some Answer Impacts to mtb with now. The Shims get demoted to the commuting dept. Buy some new Answers or Northwaves instead.

Bike Setup:

Bottom Line:I really love these shoes. The sole started to delaminate a little around the cleat, but it doesn't affect anything. The aggresive sole is really stiff and climbs well, and the neoprene ankle thing works really well to keep crap out of my shoes. The toe spikes did wear down really fast though, I ended up taking hem off about a week ago. The sole, after one year of abuse, is getting worn down, I'll probably have to replace them in two or three months. They should have lasted longer for the price, but they perform really well and I plan on buying another pair when these die.

Bottom Line:This is an expensive shoe and should have lasted well over a year of reasonable use. I've just gone through my second pair which broke in the
same way as the first, with the rubber at the front breaking away, and the sole coming away from the upper. This was a good shoe to ride in
and even though it let in water it was still reasonably warm and comfortable. I'm still waiting for the verdict on my second pair, hopefully I will get a refund or a better pair
from the shop, when they hear from the supplier.
This is obviously a design fault as Madison the
supplier in the UK, mensioned that an artical in
a UK magazine that mensioned this problem was no
longer relevant as this had been fixed. This does
seem to have been the case, as when I was in another bike shop I notice they had several pairs,
one of which had a large block of rubber where both my last pairs had broken, Something to look

I get satisfaction I can only give these one chile.

BUT - within one month the rubber on the toes fell off... very annoying and No, I don't hike my bike enough to justify the excessive wear or improper use defense. types of failures. Try hiking through rough terrain with Sidi shoes and you'll easi-
rip the delicate lorica or break the buckle, then try returning them for replacement. Anyway I'm sure if there are enough returns Shimano with either

A product finally made me feel strongly enough to submit a review. I went looking for some shoes to go with my Time Atac Carbons and these looked incredible. In use they are incredible. Very (but not too) stiff sole, great grip off the bike, very good at keeping the mud on the outside, rubber bumpers at the potential scuff points. And then, after maybe 20 rides, the outer sole developed big cracks and started peeling off the midsole. Absolute garbage. I took them back to the LBS and looked for a better shoe. In the end I came away with a new pair of these - there just wasn't anything else as good. But I believe I'll be back warrantying these before very long and then it will be timne to move on to another manufacturer. Shimano really should get it together with these soles. With the right rubber these would be more than a five. As it is, they deserve zero.

I've had these shoes for six months or so, and I've been really impressed with the performance and comfort of these shoes. A stiffer sole would be better for riding, but not so good for climbing up steep banks. My only real problems with these shoes is that the chunky rubber sole comes unglued, and the neoprene tears near the fabric loop at the back. The sole is moderately easy to repair with contact adhesive, but I really would expect better quality.I think about five for performance, but only around 2 or 3 for quality...

Also, when i went to screw in the spikes yesterday I discovered that there is some random bit of metal floating around and the spikes will not screw in. I plan to contact Shimano today and see what they can do for me.Overall, however, I really like the shoes. They are comfortable and they look good (and everyone knows its not how you feel but how you look...) I give them 4 flaming chillies for comfort and performance, but only 2 for durability.

Bottom Line:

I bought these shoes after mmy Diadoras fell apart. I was looking for something
tough, with a stiff sole, and that wouldnt fall apart easily.
Unlike most other reviewers here, I had no problems at all with the cuffs.
After beating on them for several months, the only thing that is getting a
bit worn are the spikes.
At the beginning I had a bit of a hard time fitting right, but after a few
weeks they adapted to my feet better and now they are great.
I like the three velcro straps instead of only two. The stiff sole is
also great.
I would give them 5 chillis if it was cheaper. For the money, it gets 4.

Bottom Line:

As others already posted I was attracted by the good fit of the shoe
and the rigid looking sole.
Trouble began on the first ascent where I had to push the bike. The front
rubber sole simply fell of the right shoe, the ledft one followed one day later.
After only 8 riding days up to now huge parts of the sole came unglued.
Also the neoprene cuff started to rip at where the little cloth handle is after the 3d day, thus making the handle useless.Come on SHIMANO, the SIDIS and DIADORAS that we also had on our 8 days mtb trip
across the european alps (in the same price range) performed absolutely
flawlessly.
Just ask the manufacturers of alpine hikeing boots or ski touring boots, which
also have a very stiff middle sole and a rubber threaded outer sole,
how to make soles that don not come unglued and that do not tear in parts.
Even so I am lightwioght rider the shoes crped much too quickly.SHIMANO, I would be happy to test ride your new shoe designs for you,
to help improve them.these shoes have some good ideas incorporated, but DO LACK in stability!

As with everyone, I too have had problems with the neoprene ankle cuff and rubber bottoms. The cuff strted to rip at where the little cloth handle is, thus making the handle useless. The rubber bottoms started to de-laminate from plastic molding and the traction blocks started to crack and break off. Tis a pity, seeing how they fit my wide feet...

As other reviewers found, the neoprene cuffs came unstitched in both shoes just trying the shoe on. Must be a common problem with this shoe. However, shoe fits well and probably will be otherwise durable. After Shimano sends me a replacement I hope to be able to actually try the shoe out. One concern is that the shoe is quite a bit heavier than the 210 model.

Same thing happened to me as magic matt, neoprene cuffs came unstitched on
first ride. Shame as its the burliest looking shoe out there, with all
the features i was looking for.Returned em and swapped em for diadora chilis. The problem we had may be
minor (ie. non-catastrophic), but it shouldnt happen to a $130 shoe!

I bought these shoes in early January, because I was having a very difficult time finding anything that fit my feet properly (size 48). I had some reservations after owning a pair of Shimano 110's, which didn't hold up too well. (The rubber soles separated from the shank, the stitching came undone, and the pseudo-leather tore right through to the heel counter.) The first thing I noticed about the new shoes was that they were a bit of a pain to get on. I understand the value of the neoprene collar, but it isn't the easiest to get on. The next thing I noticed was that the shoes aren't overly stiff, and my feet get sore when standing on the pedals for any length of time. My biggest complaint, however, is that the rubber soles are separating from the shank in 2 spots, anas well as above the instep on one side. I'm very disappointed, particularly since I have only had about 10 rides in them. The toe spikes and the aggressive tread are helpful, but the lack of overall comfort and the soles coming unglued is a big detractor, and has convinced me to never buy Shimano shoes again.Four chilis for the spikes and soles, two for comfort and durability.Average is three

I bought a pair of these shoes last winter. It was el Nino here. The first day I wore them I went to The Forest of Nisene Marks near the Santa Cruz coast. It was wet wet wet and muddy muddy muddy. My plan called for fording a creek which was out of the question. The alternate was climb a steep, wet, and muddy hill. I had visions of slipping, sliding, tripping, and falling. Not so, these Rokasaki's allowed me to motor up the hill. The spikes in the toes are great! The tread is great. The shoes are great. It is now August and I have worn the metal spikes down and have ordered replacements. The cuff on one shoe is beginning to unravel but I still love 'em and would buy them again.

On the first ride, the stitching on the top neoprene cuff unraveled on BOTH shoes. Also the large tread knobs had begun to break off the front of the shoe. I was very disappointed as these fit my wide feet very well, whereas most other manufacturer's shoes don't. Returned them for a warranty refund.

hey,i guess i'll be the first to submit a review on these shoes...not too shaby. i was a heart beat away from getting the fancy Sidi Dominators when the lbs guy showed me these pups. they seemed stiff enough and fit my sorta wide foot better than my shitty Answer Accelerators. i got them for $130, not sure if that was good or bad.they rode really nice. the spikes on the front were good when negotiating this impossible uphill on foot. i'll give 'em four for now, i'll be back if they fall apart.

Been riding in these shoes for 3 months, and I like them better every day! The soles are agressive, and give great traction in the mud, and clear easily. The replacable spikes are compatible with outdoor soccer spikes, so you can pick any size you want. I personally find the plastic spikes better than the steel ones supplied. Entry is easy, and comfortable, and the neoprene booty combined with the three velcro straps creat a secure, comfortable fit. I paid $107 for these shoes at a Nashbar Outlet, but I would be just as happy with these shoes had they cost twice as much. Get 'em, try 'em, LOVE 'EM!!

I really want to like these shoes (my last ones, Nike Niguba II, fit terribly for 2 years!). So with that said, these Shimano M150's feel great. No prob's gettin' in or out. They have very stiff soles which are a requirement for my Shimano 747 Pedal which have a small surface area that can lead to foot aches after long climbs or decents. I haven't had feet cramps, loss of circulation and the two front spikes actually work in soft stuff. Remove the spikes for slick rock - not good - which segues into a real problem.....After 2 days in Colo. and 3 days in Moab, my NEW M150's went back for warranty replacement. The rubber tread separated from the sole around the cleat. Thanks to Start to Finish bikes in San Rafael for being great with the replacement but geez.... I am very worried about having to replace these shoes every 5 days! But wait.....
Then I go in to my local shoe repair shop to pick up my 3 year old pair of cowboy boots and what do I see? A pair of M150's. Oh, oh.... they're in for a little stitch repair. In any case, I will say that they perform wonderfully and feel great while they're together. I'm just a little worried about longevity here. I'll have to give a benefit of the doubt 4 chili's and wait and see!
