Favorite Trail:Kettle Morraine
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $75.00
Purchased At:PlanetOutdoors
Strengths:Durability
Comfy to walk in
Non-bike shoes looks
Weaknesses:Flexy sole
Hard to keep clean after mud bath
Similar Products Used:Jalapeno
Bike Setup:Voodoo hardtail
Bottom Line:These really are touring shoes and not designed for everyday training or mountain biking. They are great if you want to combine cleats with walking. Commuting, touring or just getting groceries would be the ideal use for these shoes.

Compared to a traditional mtb shoe, they are much too wide and flexy. Because they are so wide, the cleat cutout is toward the inside of the sole, not the center. The uppers don't cinch down enough, and the suede upper takes forever to dry out when wet. It is also very hard to clean the uppers if you get them muddy. The cleat cut out is small, but it can be opened up rather easily. However, I have yet to experience any durability items on these shoes and I have used them hard over a years time.

I have since started using a Diadora Jalapenos as my mtb shoe but occasionally still wear the Nikes when pulling around a Burley and the baby inside. Overall, a good shoe for thier intended use.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:Nike Air Sole
Padded ankles.
Wide, stable sole for walking.
Sole is grippy and the compound soft enough for wet rocks.
Weaknesses:Not stiff enough for prolonged riding.
Extremely narrow, do not buy these without trying some on.
Had too enlarge cleat cutouts to work with clipless pedals.
Similar Products Used:Jalapenos, Yuhas.
Bike Setup:Fat and plush
Bottom Line:I bought these because I needed some shoes for those trail rides where I know I'll be hiking as much as biking, especially stream crossings replete with slippery moss covered rocks. These shoes are great for that, but they do cause my feet to go numb on long rides because they flex when pedaling hard. The lack of straps doesn't bother me. I had to relieve the cleat cutouts in order to get these soles, with their deep and gnarly treads, to work with Shimano pedals.

About the sizing--picture this: The boardroom of a major athletic shoe manufacturer, where there is a young marketing genius speaking to the directors: "My idea is that no matter what kind of shoe the customer buys from us, running or tennis or biking or whatever, he knows that if he wears a 9 and a half tennis shoe, he'd still wear a 9 and a half hiking shoe, and a 9 and a half jogging shoe. Let's end the practice of different lasts for different genre shoes, let's standardize our sizing so the customers can depend on us!" The Board Chairman replies: "Why the heck should we do that! We got Michael and Tiger! Who cares about our shoes and how they fit!"

Do not even think of buying any Nike cycling shoes without trying them on, I have to go up at least two sizes to get any of them to fit, they're way narrower than their hiking or running cousins.

Date Reviewed: September 8, 1999
Favorite Trail:
Tip Creek, WP
Duration Product Used:
1 Year
Strengths:
Comfy. Sturdy. Safer for hike a bikes on rocky terrain. Wear 'em around town.
Weaknesses:
HEAVY!! No compression straps/ tightening system, no place to hide laces, the soles could be softer/grippier
Similar Products Used:
Diadora Jalapenos
Bike Setup:
98 Stumpy full XT with 85mm Englund Air/Judy front and USE XCR seatpost, 747 pedals
Bottom Line:I like 'em. It took a little while to get used to the cleat being at the ball of my foot instead of the center of the sole but no big deal. They are invaluable on those journeys where you have to hike-a-bike or resort to leaving your bike and walking the last few miles, especially on steep, loose, rocky terrain. I will trade the weight/lace issue for the all around usefulness of these shoes any day. When these wear out I won't hesitate to buy another pair.

Date Reviewed: June 26, 1999
Favorite Trail:
Vail, Colorado
Duration Product Used:
6 months
Strengths:
Good looking
They don't look like geeky bike shoes
Good ankle protection
Weaknesses:
Terrible(worse than terrible) for clipping in clipless pedals
Big footprint
Laces fray easily
Hard to keep tied laces
Similar Products Used:
Nike Poo-bah shoe
Bike Setup:
'97 GT LTS-3
Manitou X-Vert-R
Rock Shox Delux
Panaracer Fire-X 2.1
Answer 2.5 riser bar
Kore stem
Bottom Line:They feel nice on your feet, but they won't stay tied. If you have clipless pedals, forget these shoes...you'll drive yourself nuts trying to get any consistency with clipping in. The cleat area was very poorly designed, with the inset valley for the cleat and little space for sliding in to clip in.

Date Reviewed: June 15, 1999
Favorite Trail:
Tourne park
Duration Product Used:
6 months
Strengths:
Nice protection, comfort, good look on and off bike, fairly stiff but not enought to inhibit walking
Weaknesses:
laces split at the ends pretty easily, it hurts my feet after a long time or an extended period of sprinting or standing, laces come out of the metal hooks too easily, sole is dying on me
Similar Products Used:
Specialized Sport
Bike Setup:
Schwinn Moab, Manitou X-Vert, Shimano 636 (yes the big red ones)
Bottom Line:Fairly good shoe but I have had some problems with the laces staying in properly and sometimes the tops or arches of my feet hurt after a ride. Also, the sole is chunking off at some spots but it is to be expected at this point. The shoe takes a few days to dry (at least 3-4 if aired out and not stuck in a dryer)
