Favorite Trail:Brant Tract
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $150.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Good Fit. Tough as heck!!!
Weaknesses:Not a lot of retailers carry them
Similar Products Used:Specialized
Diadora
Bike Setup:02 Intense Tracer

Bottom Line:Had these boots now for 3 seasons and have not been kind to them. Have beat the hell out of them in the mud, got them soaking wet over and over and then not really spent much time looking after them. Just put them away and let the mud dry and harden then bang them together to knock off the clumps before going out the next time. And still after 3 years they are hanging together fine. No seams have let go and the sole is still attached…

They are a great fit for my wide ass foot.

Oh yeah, I did have to replace the laces once!

Next pair is going to be Lake as well…

Regards,
TC

Favorite Trail:Porcupine Rim-Moab
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $85.00
Purchased At:dunno
Strengths:wide toe box, comfortable
Weaknesses:Soft rubber sole is nice in wet, muddy conditions but tears up in rocky conditions (Moab, Fruita). Tore off inner cleat area rubber on my recent trip to Moab--disappointed as these shoes are in otherwise great condition. A bit heavy and the heel is wide causing heel slip on hike-a-bike sections.
Similar Products Used:Sidi, Northwave, Answer
Bike Setup:Retro 8-speed Moots YBB
Bottom Line:Comfortable wide toe box but not recommended for rocky, hard conditions--soles wear too quickly.

Submitted by Gene a Cross Country Rider from New York, NY USA
Date Reviewed: May 14, 2001
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $79.00
Purchased At:Mail order
Strengths:Good fit (though the best fitting shoes I have ever had are still Sidi's Dominator 2). Lace/velcro strap combination works well. The leather/mesh uppers hold up well and don't scuff easily. Comfortable for all day riding and hike-a-bike sections. Shoes breathe well and hold up well in wet/muddy conditions. The soft sole gives good traction on rocky, slippery rocks and roots. Built in toe spikes are also great.
Weaknesses:The soft, grippy sole is also this product's greatest weakness. After one intense ride with some rocky hike-a-bike sections, some of the lugs on the sole tore off. This particular model has Shimano soles which I understand Lake stopped using.
Similar Products Used:Shimano, Nike, Sidi
Bike Setup:Bontrager Racelite
Bottom Line:Great all-around shoe but the soles are weak. I got these on clearance for 79 bucks... I would have been pissed if I had paid the full $130 MSRP give the weak soles.

Submitted by Jeff a from Bay Area
Date Reviewed: January 29, 2001
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:price (on sale at performance), materials
Weaknesses:could fit a little snugger in the heel, and the velcro closure works best when used with the laces... I hate laces and would prefer an all velcro system. Especially because you can't just loosen up the velcro to unlace.

If you are using Time cleats, you have to take a razor blade to do a little custom triming of the sole.

The color scheme is a little loud, but that really doesn't matter.
Similar Products Used:Diadora, shimano, sidi
Bottom Line:good shoes for the money, but there are definitely better shoes for the full retail price.

I haven't used them long enough to comment about durability, but they appear to be well constructed and the materials are top notch.

The bottom line is that it's pretty tough to beat Sidi/Carnac/Answer in the shoe category, there just isn't a good reason not to buy those shoes. Nonetheless, for the $79 I paid for the Lake's, I can't complain.

Date Reviewed: January 4, 2001
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $180.00
Strengths:DURABLE
Weaknesses:None
Bike Setup:Stupid question
Bottom Line:When these shoes initially came out they received above average reviews from all the mtb mags & a local shop recommended them as well. I dropped the $180.00 on them and can honestly say they were WELL worth it. I've had them for YEARS and ride year round & often. On my third set of cleats on them as well. Sure, they look beat down after YEARS of abuse but they still get the job done and done well. Ante up and drop the $ on them. Performance is offering them for a mere $80.00 now! (That's how old they are!) LAKES RULE!

Date Reviewed: October 6, 1999

Strengths:
Fairly durable.
Weaknesses:
Rubber sole tends to come off in pieces, as well as, the toe rubber. Weak stitching.

Bike Setup:
Speedplay
Bottom Line:These shoes have been money well spent. They could be a bit more durable, although 20months on the racing circuit warrants me to buy another pair. Answers seem to outlast the Lakes in the same time frame. I would check if i could find a lighter pair of shoes, they seem a bit heavy. Straps are too long.

Bottom Line:I've had these shoes for about a year and I ride at least a few times a week. These shoes are very comfortable and I haven't had any problems with durability. The only thing is the straps could be a little shorter. ALso how about a different color combo for the shoes because the MX200's are almost the same color.

Date Reviewed: May 8, 1999
Duration Product Used:
3 months
Strengths:
These shoes fit as though they were moulded for my own feet.
Great traction on hike a bike sections.
Weaknesses:
No weaknesses found to this point.
Similar Products Used:
My last shoes were the old MX200s which suffered from severe sole delamination, although two years of hellish river slogging could be a factor.
Bottom Line:For the type of terrain these shoes must endure, if in two years they need to be replaced, I think I will have had my money's worth.
Great job Lake!

these shoes fit and perform great, to my ability but, the rubber soles tore little by little and a spike broke off every time i went riding. kind of frustrating when you consider the price of them.

I have owned these shoes for 6 months and have been very pleased. The fit is terrific, the laces really help alot, you can feel the difference on the up stroke. For me durability has not been a problem, they have held up as good as any other shoe I have owned. Once I had to take some shoe glue and retack a small piece of rubber, I was looking through the owners mannual and thats what it recommended. Ever since they have held up great. I ride every weekend in a lot of rock, roots and mud and I am very pleased.

Bottom Line:

The shoe fits well, and is very comfortable, but the durability is not so good.
The Kevlar on the sides of the shoe pealed off after a couple of monthes, and huge chunks of the sole were missing in only a couple months as well. Comfortable but not durable.

Bottom Line:

I have the '98 MX300's and I am on my second pair. There are good sides and bad sides to the Lake MX300. The good things about the mx300 are that the are suprisingly comfortable and fit well. The bad things are that the sole has come off around the spd cleat and the plastic external heal cup has started to become unstitched, meaning its soon to fall off. Also the shoes do not fit well around the ankle, so for racers needing to make dismounts and run up inclines....the shoes tends to come off the back off your heal. I give the MX300 2 stars.

Bottom Line:

This review is for the MXZ 300 winter boot: just replaced my Sidi Storms with these boots and boy what a difference! I did a 20 degree ride yesterday and for first time my feet stayed warm. The Lakes are really well designed with tons of insulation inside and they really fit well too. I recommend getting them thru a local bike shop because the sizing can be a little difficult. I have a pair of the regular MX 300 in 43 but had to get the MXZ 300 in 45 to allow enough room for a heavy sock inside. A buddy bought a pair and found them to run a little small too. Worth the money if you can't stand cold feet. Lake has really set the standard for constructing a proper winter shoe.

awesome shoes. I've used mine for almost a year without problems. Lake soles last even with walking. sole is nice and stiff. the upper has lasted through torture of water, Moab, sand, mud. I bought a second pair because I got a deal on them for $85. Recommended! Buy a pair now.

Bottom Line:

Stiff, comfortable, lacing and velcro let you get a tight fit but a disappointment compared to my MX 200's. Soles wear out unacceptably quickly - I have the 97's with some stock soles Lake bought from Shimano to cut costs. I phoned Cycletech, the Canadian distributor (phoned Martin of Cycletech 1-800-661-1662 on Oct 6, 1998) to check to see if the problems have been resolved and apparently the newer Lake MX 300's have Lake soles and are better.Since the shop Cycletech rep is very responsive to warranty concerns - 2 stars. The shoe was worn only for racing; 3 races total of 10 hours with minimum of walking and sole delaminated in two places.

Bottom Line:

Finally got the MX-300 via mailorder (BikerBob). Top notch material and contruction. The colors are more acceptable to my eyes than those shoes of European decent - not a big fan of the wild/garish shades. The cleated sole is made by Shimano. No problem walking. The toe box is not as wide as I would like, my Shimano M090 is slighty wider. Have to stretch the right toe box a little. Other than that, the shoes are excellent. Would definitely buy another pair.

Date Reviewed: July 1, 1998
Bottom Line:

These shoes are really comfortable to ride in. The soles are super stiff. Stiffer then Sidi's D2. ( I have owned both). Back to riding, because of the shimano/Lake designed sole the shoes work great with the 747 pedals. The float in the pedals is smooth. unlike the sidi's there is a little rubbing on the side. These are not good to walk in cos the sole is soo stiff, but if you are a great rider and never get off the bike this is not so critical.
As fit goes I would like to see a padded tongue like the sidi's. Even though the soles are on the narrow side Lake has manage to create a lot of toe box room by using pittard glove leather and mesh. The laces and velcro is a lot of work if you're going out for a quick ride under an hour. (The Sidi's are easier to get on and off and faster.) I find that the velcro hooks by the pinkie toe tends to cause a pressure pain in the pinkie. Others do not find this to be a problem.
Construction is solid where it counts. Heel cup, pittard leather, soft insert, and riveted soles makes the MX300 a performance shoe. However I noticed that a mesh seam rubs my big toe in only one shoe.
Anyway, I hope my review help those are interested in the shoes.

This has been one of the best pair of shoes I have ever owned, they ere stiff, durable, comfortable, and down right good looking. Ihave owned mine for three years and they still rock. They have been derenched, soaked in mud and left in a plastic bag in the trunk of my car for two weeks and only needed to have the insoles pulled out, and treated being hosed down out side, and they seemed only to get more comfortable.

Superb working shoe with a perfect fit, even in the wet Dutch conditions. This is probably the only shoe looking better after a few rides than buying it new. Clean your muddy shoe(without the insole) in the sink and put old newspapers in the toebox afterwards. They will last longer.

Bottom Line:

I've used these shoes for about 6 months. the fit the best of about 5 styles that I tried and still fot very well. They are as stiff as you might want a shoe to be. there are cleat bolts but mine didn't come with cleats. I'm not sure why either. I really like lace-up shoes for the superior fit. the velcro straps are a bonus. If styling matters, they are one of the few decent looking mtn binking shoes. The only negative I have with these shoes would be the weight. They are considerably heavier than the Shimano's I used to wear.

I have read some excellent reviews about the Lake 300 - selling price is ~$180 I believe. Do you know of any mailorder companies selling this shoe? Can't seem to find any on this website. Several magazines have given the shoe raving thumbs up; hence, five flames because of the reviews. Anyone out there who have tried or worn these shoes? Love to hear from you.
