Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Purchased At:Pricepoint
Strengths:Stiff, Super comfortable, Look good, Plenty of tread.
Weaknesses:none
Similar Products Used:Sidi, shimano
Bottom Line:I bought these in 2000 on closeout from Printpoint. I dont remember the price I paid, but it was really cheap as I was in my freshman year in college. I have put on around 8,000 miles of abusive singletrack riding and another 10,000 miles of use when I bike to work everyday. They fit amazing out of the box and they still fit great. After so much abuse, they look really really beat up now. So much so that I get picked on by some of the guys I ride with. But they still work just as good as the day I bought them. I just recently caved in and bought a pair of new shoes that fit almost as good.

Favorite Trail:Asbury Woods / Browns Farm
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $90.00
Purchased At:Borman Fahrader, Freising Germany
Strengths:These shoes look cool, have good treads on the the bottom, and my feet stay cool for most of the ride.
Weaknesses:Durability
Stupid Design
Similar Products Used:Old School Shimano Shoes
Bike Setup:Frame: Exotec Comp 1, Ritchey Logic SPD pedals, full 1999 XTR component group, IRC mythos xc, Mavic CrossMax ceramic
Bottom Line:The bottom line is that these shoes look cool, they feel good, but they cannot take a beating at all. I bought these shoes in last May and already they are coming apart. In the back of the shoe, I had to glue the sole back onto the shoe. The rubber toe pad in the front of the shoe is has pretty much completely came off of the shoe as well. There is a molded heel cup so that your feet are secured to the back of the shoe for the whole ride. The problem with this is that every time my right heel bumps my crank, the outer ring rips a huge chunk out of the plastic heel pad. You see, they designed the heel pad with some vents on it, and they are right in the spot that hits the chain ring.

I have always read the reviews on this website, but this is the first time that I have ever written anything. There are so many people who write false reviews that it is difficult to tell what is actually good and bad. I wish that I had read all of the reviews for this shoe before I purchased it. I cant believe that I have done more damage to this shoe in three months, than I did with my old school shimano shoes in about six years.

I give these shoes three flamin chilis for the value because they were pretty cheap when I bought them. For the overall rating I give them a two because these shoes fall apart so easily.

If I had to recommend these shoes to anyone, it would be to someone who does not ride really challenging trails. I am sure that if you just ride fire roads, you will be ok. If you are a person who likes to ride XC but every now and then throw in a steep descent on a rutted trail with huge roots, dont waste your money on these shoes.

Strengths:Durability!!! I bought these shoes in the spring of 98 This will be my 5th year of racing and riding. Outlasted 3 bikes
Weaknesses:Rubber soles I had to reglue part of the sole after one year of riding.

Bottom Line:I have ridden with these shoes in 3 "Test of metal" races and in 3 "24 Hrs of adrenaline" including the infamous snow storm at silverstar in 2000.
I have ridden in -30 weather in Calgary with these and they are still going strong. I will buy a new pair this only because the sole is pretty much worn out but the shoe itself is still as stiff as the day I have bought it.

Favorite Trail:Tequepis, Santa Barbara
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $85.00
Purchased At:Velo Sport
Strengths:Comfy, durable, good looks, decent hiking tread, good breathability
Weaknesses:None, other than the fact that the toe box could use some reinforcement to protect it from rocks.
Similar Products Used:Performance, Sidi, and my old, trusty Shimano M200s!
Bike Setup:Relevant componentry: Race Face cranks with Ritchey V2 and Dura Ace with V2 pedals. Have also run these shoes with SPD 747 and 535s with no problems.
Bottom Line:For years now I've used Spuds on both my road and off-road bike (lets just say I was sick and tired of climbing stairs on slippery road shoes with even slippier Look cleats bolted to 'em).
I bought the Lakes because they shared the same sole design with my trusty, but stinky old Shimano M200s. I have _super_ narrow feet, and compensate with a custom orthotic insole, but still hadn't been able to fit into Specializeds, Carnacs or Northwaves.
On my first couple of rides I found myself constantly checking the straps to see if the shoe was on tight enough -- I couldn't believe that a shoe could fit this snugly and still be so posh! Five years later I'm still believin' it!
I quickly also found out that the mesh on the Lakes breathed far better than my shimanos (i.e. dried better and stank less) - making the Lake the superior summer shoe, whereas the Shimanos kept my feet drier in foul weather use.
After 5 years of hard use, the monster rocks here in NW NJ have finally all but devoured the leather forefoot portions of the shoe, so I am in the market for something with plastic or kevlar reinforcement up front -- most likely the Lake MX 300. THe shimano soles on my Lakes are also pretty chewed up, but after all I've put these shoes through I say hats off to Lake for making such a quality product!
The bottom line: If all my gear were as reliable, durable and cost-effective as these shoes, I'd be a happy man.
5 habaneros right across the board!

Purchased At:Bay Cycle
Strengths:Great fitting, comfort, style...
Weaknesses:none yet
Similar Products Used:none, these were my first pair of bike shoes
Bike Setup:ATAC time pedals (not much else really matters)
Bottom Line:I have a hard time finding shoes that are comfy, and these felt like I was wearing slippers (they still feel like this). I love the way that they breathe, they're easy to take off (not that I really want to...) and put on. The only real downside is the time it takes for them to dry. I had a race in Bethany in April, and there was still ice and snow, but it was melting. I had to go through water to complete the course, and the shoes took several hours to dry in the sun (although it was cold out). This being just a minor thing, and the fact that they fit like gloves, 5 flamin' Chilis and kudos to LAKE for a magnificent pair of shoes. I'd definitely pay full price for these, since I got them at 50% off ;).

Happy Riding!

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Purchased At:Cycle Solutions (Kingston Rd. location)
Strengths:Great styling, awesome fit. World of difference from past shoes I've had. You'd almost want to walk in them (almost..)
Weaknesses:My first pair of LAke MX200's lasted a grand total of 7 days before the left heel of the sole cracked and fell off following the fourth ride I had taken on them. As I saw in a few other reviews the LBS was surprised and had never gotten a pair of Lakes back to that date - especially with the odd position of the damage. My shoe almost appeared as if there was no glue under that portion of the sole. They gave me a new pair on the spot and am willing to give the shoes a second chance. It sounds like the factory had a bad week given that the only bad thing everyone has to say so far is the fast cracking sole.
Similar Products Used:none (I wouldn't even put my last shoes in this category)
Bike Setup:Rocky Mtn. "Hammer Race", Judy SL, XT rear, LX front, Race Face Forged, Ritchey Logic clips
Bottom Line:Worth a go - The few rides I got in I loved the shoes and I'm sure the sole problem is an isolated manufacturing flaw. Replacement was no questions asked (it was only 8 days though).

I think this shoe is a great for just about anyone - it's price point makes it affordable for the beginner but the performance is there for competitive riders. A good buy all around.

Strengths:Pretty Stiff Sole, Fits real well, lace under straps is a plus (I believe this is why they fit so well), Gnarly tread on bottom, Mud Studs (cleats in the front) are great for getting stuck on a muddy clay climb.
Weaknesses:None so far, according to other people below me the gnarly tread is going to come loose, If so that kinda sucks, good thing I only paid $60 for them.

Bike Setup:Only part that matters for this review is Time Pedals
Bottom Line:I think they are well designed shoes from a functionality standpoint. I havent had any signs of premature wear yet so I cant knock them for that. I will post again if they fall apart.

Until then they get 3 chilis for value because unless you get them on sale like I did your paying too much.

Bottom Line:After going through several pairs of shoes, the Lakes were the ones for my feet. They were comfortable right from the start and perform excellently (5 for fit/performance). I have had problems with the soles peeling off. I am on my third pair in three years. Kudos to Lake (Jonathan), Bell (Vincent) and the LBS (McCrank's) for taking care of this for me. The first two pairs had Shimano soles, that required you to cut away the sole around the cleat and that is where the soles would start peeling. The new ones come pre-cut and look to be solidly glued around the opening.5 for fit/performance, 4 for warranty, 3 for durability (hopefully it's been fixed). Overall they gotta be a three for the hassle of them coming apart and having to go without while they are replaced.

Also see review re Lake MX 300s.As with the 300's, they are comfortable, durable, fit exceptionally well and dry out easily. Only minus is the heavier weight. Sole wear is acceptable after 8 months of usage and they did not stretch. Some delamination of uppers from lowers even with an application of Freesole but the shoes appear to be holding up w/o problem despite this slight problem. Used for rec riding mainly, my Lake MX 300s are the race shoes.Like the muted colours. Tried the mud-stud option but I run very fast when portaging the bike and I ripped the studs right out of the shoes so be warned. In summary, a good shoe- much better than my previous Shimano 110's and SIDI shoes

Six month follow-up...
You Spinal Tap fans will agree that St. Hubbins (patron saint of quality footwear) smiled the day these shoes were introduced. Great fit for wider feet with higher arches. Lots of toe room. Otherwise a good snug fit with a super-stiff sole for maximum energy transfer. No delamination or deterioration at all... at all. The understated colour is good for those of us who choose not to strap parrots on our feet. Everything gets muddy anyway if you're riding hard. :) These shoes have been very very wet and still feel new. Still five flaming triple-coilers with a DQ twist. Oh yeah, thanks to Physical Culture for the advice - always fair, always courteous, and so far, always right.

Great shoes! What to say about them - not much, since they work like shoes are supposed to - I don't notice them when I'm riding. The soles are very stiff; the toebox is wide (good for winter riding); the adjustment straps work perfectly. They do soak up a lot of water. But, I keep them well saturated with waterproofing, which helps a lot. The soles grip well on dirt, etc. It's very easy to clip in with these shoes. The styles are good looking( they wouldn't let me use the word i wanted to use) too, i would reccomend looking for metal tipped cleats though, the not metal tipped ones wear out to fast, almost to the point where you can't get em out. Brought them back to the store and basically got the f0ck off message. The shoes themselves are the greatest things in the world. They are still stiff. And they are still a struggle to walk in. The Lake MX 200 shoes are the best I've ever worn. They are extremely
comfortable and keep my feet warm in the cold weather. They also provide
great traction uphill (with your bike on your shoulder!)I would recommend
these shoes to everyone who values comfort in their ride. Not only are
they better then your more popular namebrands. They are cheaper too!

Cool shoes. I've been wearing Sidi Dominator's until now. As the colder weather sets in, these bad boys keep my feet a lot warmer. Studs are nice and a necessity. Can't wait to start the racing season and see how they take some real abuse. I've talked to the Lake people as well. Great outfit with some really decent people...too bad they gotta spend winter in Chicago.

I've owned a pair of the MX200s for about three years (black and green version), and have found them durable and comfortable. My wife originally bought me a pair of Shimanos (black/yellow...model?) from an LBS, but I took them back and mail ordered the Lakes with the same sole for less money. Can't compare to other shoes, but I can attest to the quality of these shoes. I'd buy them again.

I purchased these shoes after returning the pair of Scott 4X4's that I didn't like at all! The soles were WAY too soft. The Mx200's are very stiff in the sole, and have a very roomy toebox. I also find that there's plenty of arch support that makes them all the more comfortable while riding, or hiking/portaging the bike.An excellent value for the price and quality!

I LOVE THESE SHOES, VERY STIFF AND ALSO VERY COMFORTABLE. I GOT THEM BECAUSE OF THE PRICE, BUT WITH EVERY RIDE I REALIZE WHAT A STEAL A GOT. I DO A LOT OF WET WEATHER RIDING AND THESE SHOES TAKE A BEATING, BUT HAVE HELD UP GREAT. i AM SOLD ON LAKE SHOES.

Bottom Line:

Lake MX200's are the best cycling shoes I have ever used, they have taken endless thrashing and are still going strong. I even use them on my roadbike because they are so stiff. Working in a bike shop I have found that these shoes have the lowest number of warrenty returns by miles, and are the most popular and best value for money shoes on the market. Pity they have just changed from black to grey suede as the old ones looked better, but they still go off. Screw soccer boot studs in for full on climbing action. Highly recomended.

You Americans are such whiners! I was sponsored by the german LAKE distributor for the 95 and 96 seasons. We wore the MX200 and beat the crap out of them. I too had minor problems with the soles but instead of throwing the shoes out I simply re-glued the soles before they got too bad. Other than that, my shoes lasted as well as my previous shoes- Sidis, Scott, Specialized. I found the wide toe-box of the Lakes to be perfect in preventing numbness. The way I see it, even if a product is designed to used hard it doesn't mean you can neglect it. Bikes need constant care, even 4000usd models, so why should shoes be different?

I have owned a pair of MX 200 shoes for over a year, and recently had the opportunity to test the new prototype MX 200w. Basically, the MX 200 with a womens specific last. The fit is even better than the 200, and the durability is deluxe. After chatting with the engineers at Lake, they have admitted to the delam problems in the past, but have solved this problem over a year ago. If you want the best new shoes on the market, buy Lake.

Bottom Line:

I bought these shoes because of price and LBS salesperson's recommendation. They fit well and I like the color scheme. Unfortunately, the soles started to separate from the uppers after only a handful of rides. I would expect better durability from a pair of shoes that have Shimano soles. I had to cut away part of the tread so that I could use Onza pedals, but I think that is the case for many shoes to work with Onzas.

Bottom Line:

Bought these because they fit well and were less offensive looking than some of the pimpier
shoes out there. Initial impression was great. Good performance when pedalling and decent
traction for hike-a-bike sessions. The problem I have run into with these is the soles have
delaminated from the shoe at the toe and under the arch. I took the first pair back after 2
months of riding and the replacements did the same thing. To my LBS's credit, they swapped
them no problems. The current pair is relatively new still but is showing signs of getting ready to
shed the sole again at the toe. These use a Shimano sole (110?) as indicated right on the
bottom of the shoe. A friend has the Shimano 110 and hers have completely delaminated on
one shoe and partially on the other.
Makes for tricky footing during portaging or scrambling over large obstacles. Overall fit and
function of the Lakes is good but I am dissatisfied with their longevity.

Bottom Line:

For those of you who are after a stiff and strong MTB shoe, consider the LAKE MX200 Phat Catz. The shoes are pretty cheap: AUD$179 and have the performance of their more expensive bretheren. The sole is fairly chunky, akin to the Carnac variety, and I'm almost certain it is one of the old Shimano soles. These soles used to get heaps of complaints about lifting from the uppers, but LAKE have refitted them with sturdy bolts, rivets and glue to ensure that the sole does not come away. The uppers are just your average synthetic with aerated sections to allow your feet to breathe. The MX200's are the lace and velcro variety with two toungues to ensure your feet are snug and to minimise any trail crud getting into your shoes.Overall, an excellent shoe. I highly recommend them.

Bottom Line:

For those of you who need mtb shoes with a wide toe box, I recommend the Lake MX 200 highly. I have fairly wide toes and a narrow heel and have often had trouble finding good shoes that fit well. Answer shoes, for example, don't fit me well at all. These are the most comfortable shoes I have yet worn for mountain biking. They have a nice velcro strap system with laces underneath, so you can get a snug fit. The leather is high quality and they have a molded plastic heel cup. The soles are high-end Shimano with threads for soccer studs. They cost $125.00 from the Colorado Cyclist catalogue. I rate them four stars for now. If they hold up well for a year I'll give them five.
