$140.00 | | Strengths: | Fit well, work well, look good. | | Weaknesses: | Laces AND straps seems like overkill. Takes forever to put on and take off. | | Bike Setup: | Gary Fisher Marlin with disc brakes. | | Bottom Line: | After seeing the prices others paid for these shoes on this page, it confirms to me that Canadians are RIPPED OFF by Canadian bike retailers. The attitude of sellers here is to charge a premium, as Canadians have nowhere else to turn. This has changed. I should have bought these online from an American retailer. Even with taxes, duty, and shipping, I'd save a bundle. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

The soles are nearly worn down now to the inner sole. I had to superglue the uppers back down onto the sole and have since gotten another 6 months out of them with no signs of coming apart again. I ride 3 to 4 days a week on rough rocky Arizona terrain and they have never failed me. The tread on the outside of one shoe is starting to delaminate but nothing serious, and a couple of stitches in one toe have worn through (been like that for several years). The soles are still very stiff but the leather is like sweet yellow butta.
I too would like a new pair of shoes cuz I'm sick of looking at them and so are my pals. The XC1 looks like it could be a good replacement...but I can't justify it when they work great. I can only hope that they die soon or get stolen. Five flamin hot ones! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Props to answer for making such a great product.

I wore mine 6 days a week to train and during races the first season I had them. I love the stiffness, it's great for climbing. The spikes are helpful, until they fall out, midrace I might add. And the sole has a really agressive tread, until it falls off. I used these 2 summers ago, and loved them. Then last year the sole started to pull away from the upper of the shoe, and the sole began to peel off. I still like these shoes and use them to train, but never to race. I wouldn't reccomend buying them unless you can find them cheap. I don't think they sold well so it's easy to find them for 30 to 40 bucks. I have had these shoes for 2 years and have raced both my mtn bike and cross bike with them. I lost one toe spike somehow, and I can see where the sole has seperated a tiny bit (it has been like that for a year, and has not gotten any worse). For me these shoes fit well and have held up to everything I have used them in. Maybe I got the only good pair ever made. And for only $69 bikes from a local shop, I would say I have gotten (and am still getting) my monies worth out of these shoes. I like 'em. They were $40 and worked quite well. I took them on some of my favorite trails which involved both rocky and soft conditions, to which the Accelerators stood up quite well. Toe spikes are a plus | | Weaknesses: | However, after a recent long ride through Noble Canyon (with parts of it including loose shale and boulders) I noticed the sole was coming off the shoe. I had noticed earlier that the tread itself was a bit soft but attributed it to normal wear. Needless to say, I found this unacceptable and brought them back to a local dealer, who sent them back to Answer. We'll see what I get in return, but I'm hoping for some 2000 Impact.
In addition, these shoes are not the best to walk in. It may be my foot shape but the heel does slip a bit; not enough to notice while riding, but certainly while walking. | | Bike Setup: | Shimano 636 pedals; Moab frame, Kooka cranks, NukeProof, Azonic w/ Hellbent, LX stuff, etc.. | | Bottom Line: | For $40 these shoes are decent. they are very stiff--i don't even feel the wait on the pedal. easy to clip in--the lugs are just far enough away from the cleat. the toe cleats are great--good for kicking whinners...they are really easy to put and the velcro seams fine to me--i cinch them really tight and the velcro holds--imagine that. | | Weaknesses: | where the cleat is located--of course i have a size 6-1/2 so that might have something to do with it. | | Similar Products Used: | better than anything i have ever riden on. my previous pair were nike pooh bah II's | | Bike Setup: | SPD'S | | Bottom Line: | good race shoes. i have no problems with them as of yet and i don't think i will. i plan on beating the hell out of them and i beleive they can take the strain. if you are buying your first pair of race shoes these would be a good pair--they usually sell for pretty cheap because they stopped making them in 99. they are ultra stiff and comfortable for walking. the weight is placed right on the pedal--definately a good design. and it the 99 version has a nice color scheme--red, black, and yellow. and they do not look like mcdonald shoes--these are way cooler. i recomend these shoes but don't come whinning to me if these shoes don't last--i would recommend then to stop neandertholic feet dragging...i will review the accelerators again after i have had them for a longer time...i am giving four chilis as of now because i haven't had them that long to really know--but i see a five in the future... | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I thought it was a great deal, plus they were very comfortable in comparison to others. My very FIRST ride the soles started to delaminate. Eventually, I had more Shoe-Goo on the bottom than soles. Called Answer and they were fairly responsive. Sent the '98's back and received a new pair of '99's. I was hoping that the soles would be fixed on the new shoes, buuutttttt Answer still hasn't fixed the problem. The soles haven't delaminated as badly as the 98's, but this really shouldn't happen after five rides or so. Other then that they are great shoes and I will continue using them until they are dead, but when they do I'm going to step up to some Sidi's or Northwaves for the extra cash. I think in the long run it's probably worth it. Three Chilis at best for the Accelerators. | Overall Rating: |

The soles will peel off the 98's, and the stitching will immediately come undone on the 99's. I bought the 98's because of the low price at a mail order place, and within 3 months the sole was peeling off of both shoes. I sent them in for warranty replacement, and they sent me the 99's. I was happy to see my new shoes arrive, but to my dismay they too began coming apart after only one race. The only other things I've seen come apart that fast are Shimano chains and Girvin pedals. Walking on that soft rubber sole with Time cleats isn't very nice either. I'm glad I didn't pay full price for these shoes. I'm glad I did finally pay the extra money for the Sidi's, because they fit way better, they weight half as much, and the quality is incomparable. | Overall Rating: |

I have a very wide toe box, and so most shoes will not fit me. I went shoping at every LBS in Santa Cruz (home of mountain biking) and other than the extra wide SIDI's, nothing came close to fitting, so I ordered these things online. Oter than the garish color scheme (Ronald McDonald would be envious) and somewhat crappy toe cleat design (too small screws) these are great shoes. The soles are stiff, but the rubber is soft and thick making it easy to walk in. The cleat could be a slight bit more recessed, but its close to silent on flat ground, and not too slick like SIDI's. I tried the toe cleats on one ride, felt they were a bit shaky, and took em out... if you know how to walk in the mud, they are not really that useful anyway... cleats are for sprinting on wet ground, not something you need for biking. So far they have held up wonderfully as well through 100's of miles, a number of crashes, and quite a bit of mud, roots, and rocks. Overall a great shoe for the cost. | Overall Rating: |

Good shoes at a reasonable price. I have a 13EEEE foot with a relatively narrow heel and these were the only MTB shoes that even came close to fitting (I tried Carnac, Specialized, SIDI, Look, Cannondale, etc., etc. - many dollars to the USPS sending back all the ones that didn't fit). The Answer's are nice and roomy in the forefoot. My heel slips a little, but I think a normal sized heel would be fine. The laces + straps system makes them a little slow to get in and out of, but provides a nice fit once you get everything fastened down. Haven't tried the toe spikes, so can't comment on them. After about 200 miles, no durability problems to report on my pair. The colors (red/yellow) are a little too flashy for my tastes, though... | Overall Rating: |

Bought a pair of '98s at close-out prices; even before taking the shoes out for their maiden voyage, I noticed that both toe spikes on one shoe was wiggling. I ended up pulling off the black plastic washers by hand; they came off so easily that at first I thought it was a built-in design feature. They were apparently bonded onto the shoe with rubber cement or sticky rice or a glue stick. After the first ride, the clear plastic bubble covering the Anarchy symbol fractured -- not because they received impact -- but because they were designed improperly (too thick = no flexibility = fracture). Sweat the details, Answer! And if a sole pops loose or anything major happens, they will be returned for replacement. Sucketh. Three stars-cum-chilis at best. | Overall Rating: |

No bigy though. If you a Cyclo-Xer wher the spikes, if not AVOID THEM LIKE THE PLAGUE! Other than my spike ignorance, they're rad shoes. They're the best shoes you can get for the money. having Straps and laces is great, because you get a more solid, more snug fit. The straps are of poor quality, but that doesn't affect my riding so i won't mark off. The grip on the bottom is great. They're easy to walk in, and the sof-compund rubber on the bottom provides great grip. Great overall shoe...Cannondale Kix | Overall Rating: |

Bought a pair of 97s in early spring. Within 2 months, the soles were shot and the stiching was coming undone. Sent them back to Answer for replacement. 1 MONTH LATER, I finally got a pair of 98s. Guess what, I had to glue the rubber back onto the sole after only 3 rides! Don't waste your money, you are better off putting on a pair of loafers once the soles let go. The should stick to bike hardware. nuff said. (1 star is generous) | Overall Rating: |

Can I just say that I have only had my Flatfoot shoes for a few months and don't wear them much besides riding, that the black bit of the sole is as soft as piss and wears out quick as shit. Even though i see this as a big problem, i still love them and give them 5 stars. They are great but they are SOFT!!! | Overall Rating: |

I've read some reviews and I can't see how anybody can consider buying shoes where the people that make them are sniffing the glue instead of using it where it's supposed to go on the soles. Luckly, the Bike Factory in Hawaii takes good care of its customers. I been through three pairs so far. The first pair the spikes riped out, the second pair the velcro strap ripped off, the third pair the soles are separating badly. Granted Answer will always warranty their product, but after awhile, it's time to go to a new shoe. Sorry Answer! | Overall Rating: |

Answer AcceleratorThese are the first riding shoes I've owned. I read alot of reveiws and tried on every shoe on the market before I bought these. Fit is great, the lace/strap combo allows for just the right adgustments. Never any blisters, heal slip, or pain on long rides. The laces are way too long though and you get alot of bulk under the outer tongue. Not one to be a fashion slave, I could do without the bright red and yellow colors that scream look at me! Another Ronnie McD wanna-be'!. Have gotten then soaked and completely muddy, no sign of the sole pulling away like other reviews. Cleats also no problems yet, but it helps if you ck and re-tighten before each ride. Pretty stiff sole, was a little concerned that they'd be too stiff, but it makes them that much better. Hope they last me for a long time to come. | Overall Rating: |

I got the 98' Accelerators and they seemed great. After 20-30 hard rides the sole came loose and tore off from there. Anyways, i called answer and I just took the shoes back to the place I got them and got a new pair for free! Never buy shoes by mail order. You never know what may go wrong w/ them and it sucks to be with out bike shoes for more than a few days. Other than the sole problem the seem great. Much better than the 97' accellators. The 98's have front spikes, 3D logos, stiffer sole, and laces plus straps. | Overall Rating: |

I’ve had 2 pairs of standard Accelerators. The first lasted 2 years with zero trouble. The second are still going strong after 1+ year. They’re great for everyday riding. A good starter shoe, not too expensive. Highly recommended.Based on THOSE shoes, I bought a pair of '98 Accelerator Racing shoes (red/yellow) with the laces , stiff sole and spikes. I like the way the laces keep the shoes snug with more efficient pedaling when riding and especially over technical terrain. So, I decided to install the spikes. After less than an hour, one spike tore out of the left shoe, stripping the threads. The next time wearing them, BOTH spikes disappeaed from the right shoe. VERY disappointing!2.5 chilis, since there are only whole chilis. . . 3 | Overall Rating: |

This is my second pair of Accellerators (had '97's). The laces are a pain to tie, but once they're on, they fit and perform great. Unfortunately, 2 of the 4 cleats ripped out of their holes on the second ride, stripping the threads. Also, the Ronald McDonald color scheme is starting to get tiresome. I wish Answer had put as much quality control into these shoes as they do with their Flatfoots. The Flatfoot shoes look fantastic, are way comfortable and have barely shown wear after a year of use. | Overall Rating: |

I bought a pair of the '97 Accelerators over seven months ago and haven't had a single problem with them. I disagree with those who say the sole wears out quickly. Mine have held up great and I especially like the softer rubber they use on the sole. I ride about 3 times a week through all sorts of mud and muck, and no matter what I put these shoes through, they are still as good as new. I haven't had any problem with them stretching and did I mention that they are very comfortable. | Overall Rating: |

These shoes fit quite well, and the soles are superstiff, but one major problem is with the mud cleats. So far three of the four have ripped out, along with a little round section of the sole under them, and I've only had the shoes for two weeks!! I thought glueing the cleats in might solve the problem but no!! They still tear out. There is not enough thread surface to hold the cleats in solidly. Buy Sidi's instead. | Overall Rating: |

BUT THE BONUS: MY LOCAL SHOP CALLED ANSWER WITH THE PROBLEM AND I GOT A NEW PAIR OF 98'S AT NO CHARGE. SO YES, THEY OBVIOUSLY HAVE A SOUL PROBLEM BUT I GOT TWO COMFY, STYLEE SHOES FOR $110. AND MAY BE ABLE TO GET ANOTHER PAIR BECAUSE MY 98'S LOOK LIKE THEY'RE ABOUT TO TEAR AT THE TOE.... IF I GET ANOTHER FREE PAIR IT'S WORTH THE PROBLEM.

Ok i have one thing to say!!! These shoes SUCK!!!!! I got these shoes last tuesday, and i got some cleats put on the so i could ride in them on thursday. Then i went on a ride friday, only on the street. I went only 5 miles tops, and probably not even that. I got home, took off my shoes, put them up where i always keep them, and then noticed that i had a rip in the rightshoe, on the left side of the heel. Plus my toe spikes have jsut ripped off some how, off my right shoe. So i guess i better call up nashbar, and hopefully they might take them back or trade them for a different pair of shoes.Oh they do fit good, it's jsut bad that they don't hold up as well as they fit.

These shoes are well made in every respect but one; the soles fall off. I bought the '98s thinking that the problems with the 97 models were corrected. Wrong. I called the store I bought them from (who gave me a refund without any fuss) and they told me that they received enought complaints that they were not going to carry the Answer shoes anymore. I bought the Diadora Chilis instead, and am much happier with the durable construction. | Overall Rating: |

These are my second pair of mtb shoes, and they are such an improvement, the soles are stiff, and they are easy to put on and take off. I used to have Shimano shoes, and they were not very stiff or as durable. The feel of the shoes are so nice...when riding my bike the pedalling seems so much more efficient and effortless. I love the colors, and I bought them in Vermont during the winter. I live in Europe, where these shoes aren't availible, so I am always getting attention for the awesome, exotic looking shoes. I am sure there might be some better shoes out there...but I can't get much better (maybe the top of the line Lake shoes, or the top of the line Shimano or Sidi). | Overall Rating: |

98 accelerator. add on note to previous review. Still working good after several rides in rainny, muddy, wet, slippery terrain in the wet Bay Area, but at least not cold, the shoe works. Good traction for dabbing and the infamous hike-a-bike sections.Becasue it is mesh, it does get slightly chilly when wet. One pet peeve that will make this a 4.95. Be warned that the great looking red & yellow colors equal doom for your favorite white socks. Even after several rides the socks are still getting red & yellow on them. But it really does not matter because the socks are nice and muddy (also the jersey, shorts etc.). Also, I agree w/ Erik below that the straps are more effective than the laces. | Overall Rating: |

The 98' has arrived. For a bulkierr, but not really wide foot at the ball area, these shoes provide good space. Stiff enough for decent pedalling, but not too stiff to hike that dreaded slippery hill. Laces make it easier to tune in comfort. The trick in tying a lace (from hiking secrets) is to run the lace back over the hole that is already laced (ie not the hole for the next level) to get a really custom fit just where it is needed. The straps make the top stiff and firm. The 98' includes spiles for even more fun.Overall a good value from Universal Cycles here in the SF/SJ Bay Area. For those of you that live here the cost is hard to beat & you get to pick it up right away in San Bruno. For wider feet, it gives more room than the SIDI or Northwave. Have Fun. For those looking for a not too stiff & affordable shoe, this is a great value. | Overall Rating: |

OK, I got these on sale for a mere $90, including tax/shipping. I have worn them about, maybe 20 times, and the soles are totally falling apart. The sole is separating from the shoe, and the tread from the sole. They velcro, so far so good, but looks like over time, they will die. But, they are replaceable, so that's no prob. I wish they would have another strap for the back of the shoe, my right foot goes numb on long rides from sliding to the front of the shoe. Also, they're the stiffest shoes I've had yet, which is a good thing. If the glue would stick, they'd be pretty killer shoes. I will call Answer and see about a warranty, although having to wear my old shitty shoes for ? weeks is not a happy prospect. 4 chilies for design, 2 for quality control, = 3 overall | Overall Rating: |

The sole is still in descent shape. I used these shoes exclusively for off roading with very little on pavement walking around. I ride about 2-3 times a week.My only complaint is that the straps could be more secure. Due to the meshy feel of the shoes, You can't really crank them down very well. I think the new ones should be better for this.Right now I am looking for a new pair, I will go with the new Answers or Sidi Dominators II. Good looking shoe, well designed, quality materials. Two serious defects. One, the velcro straps have too narrow a range of adjustment. Two, the quality of construction is marginal - two many missed stitches, overruns, etc. Expect more from a shoe that retails at over $100. The '98 model may not suffer from these shortcomings, but it's so damn ugly I don't care anyway. | Overall Rating: |

Very comfortable right out of the box, they added removeable toe cleats this year (I really like them in other shoes and leave them in) Siff sole, yet plenty of toe room. Comes with the airprene tounge and laces, with two broad fibre reinforced strap which are even better than the ones with I loved on my 96 accelerators (which I still use- now as back ups). Very easy to fit to your foot securely with the two sraps and the laces. I highly recommend them to anyone whos wants a very stylish (my wife has shoe envy) comfortable and funtional shoe. 5 chilis to answer. Smack
