REI Diaplex Cycling Jacket Jackets

2.67/5 (3 Reviews)
MSRP : $199.00

Product Description

Wet-weather cycling just got better with this jacket's revolutionary fabric that keeps you dry inside and out.. Diaplex fabric is temperature sensitive, making it more or less permeable according to the inside temperature. When the temperature inside the jacket is low, it helps retain body heat by preventing air and water molecules from passing through. When the temperature inside the jacket is high, your body's moisture vapor is expelled to the outside air to keep you dry. 350° reflectivity is accomplished with reflective patch wrapping from center back shoulder to front of sleeves. Two water-resistant zippers wrap front to back at sides for body core venting; body is lined with breathable mesh. Waterproof front zipper keeps out wind and water; collar is lined for next-to-skin softness. Extended rear flap offers extra protection from water spray. Back zippered pocket holds essentials securely. Adjustable cord at hem for a snug fit.

Strengths:    Looks good. I've had a lot of compliments on how nice this jacket looks.
Excellent REI customer service. They asked me why I was returning it, but gave me a full refund.

Weaknesses:    PIT ZIPS - Everything about them is BAD.
First, they go around the side of the body instead of under the arm. The angle of the opening makes it very difficult to operate the zipper with one hand. Combine the angle with the waterproof zipper and it makes it almost impossible to work while riding. The first time I wore the jacket the zipper got caught on the mesh lining and tore the mesh.
Since the pit zips don't go down the sleeves at all, it doesn't allow for decent airflow through the sleeves, really contributing to overheating.

Bottom Line:
Nice looking jacket, but the design of the pit zips makes this jacket unusable.

Strengths:    Visibility, large pockets

Weaknesses:    Did not breathe or release moisture

Bottom Line:
After reading REI's hype, this jacket sounded like magic. Unfortunately, my one ride with it was miserable. On a long
uphill in the Siskiyous I sweated like a pig, even with the ventilation fully open. The real problem came on the long cold downhill: none of the moisture was being expelled, and I felt like I was getting hypothermic. In fact, the jacket was still wet inside after it had been hanging up for a while at home. Let's face it--even in the coldest weather, you're going to sweat on long steep hills, but the hype on this jacket is ridiculous.

Strengths:    Dry, Warm, Visibility

Weaknesses:    Color takes a strong stomach

Bottom Line:
Winter in Eugene means lots of cold rain. So far this jacket has performed as advertised. Excellent waterproofing and the ride dry flap helps keep the hinny warm. Unique pit zips wrap around the chest. Overall thermal regulation capabilities are good. A great improvement over the thin water-resistant jacket in which I always ended up soaked.
