Favorite Trail:A Lot
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $65.00
Purchased At:REI
Strengths:Good fit (everyone's head shape is different)
Quick and easy adjustments
Not too hot and not too cold
Weaknesses:A little noisy when going into head wind.
Similar Products Used:Giro Ionos (for the road)
Bike Setup:Intense 5.5, XTR/XT Groupo, Fox Float 32 F Series, Fox RP23, Juicy 7's, Mavic XM 719, Chris King hubs/headset
Bottom Line:The Havoc, with a $65 price point is one of the best all around helmets. Cool looking, medium priced, a good fit (depends on the shape of your head), and rugged would best describe this helmet. I did a flip going downhill after a failed attempt jumping a 3ft drop, resulting in bruised knees and shoulders and a cracked Giro Havoc! The helmet stayed in place (even with a 3" gap between my chin and the chin strap), and took the blow instead of my head! Lifesaver? Possibly. Definitely saved me a trip to the hospital! Totally recommended for the XC rider. AM, FR, & DH should use a full face (which I should have done).

Bottom Line:This is a good product. The helmet served its purpose as it prevented serious head injury at a crash. The helmet is now dented and has a crack and must be replaced. I did not suffer any head injury whatsoever thanks to this helmet.

The helmet is a bit expensive. Nevertheless, going to spend the same money again on a new Giro helmet because it has proven itself now.

Bottom Line:Never go cheap with a helmet. This helmet saved my life today when I wrecked my bike. Instead of my head getting crushed, the helmet broke apart and took the brunt of the impact. I have a headache and a bruise, but my skull is not cracked open. I will buy another Giro Havoc immediately. I am not a normal reviewer, but safety is important to me, and this helmet worked exactly as published. Very impressed. Thanks Giro!

Bottom Line:Had this lid for many years now without complaint. Many trees, rocks and roots this thing has sampled and not even a crack. Just this year I had the front and two side pads fall apart on me. I epoxied new velcro and cut a piece of headband as replacement which actually works better than OEM pads.

Oh yeah.....I have a melon and the XL fits my 24 3/4" dome comfortably even with cold weather gear underneath, which is why I bought it in the first place.

Bottom Line:I've had this helmet for a long time now and it has served me really well. The Roc-Loc makes adjustability a breeze. I ride year round and being able to adjust the helmet with a hat on underneath for the ride to work, and easily adjust it for the ride home without a hat is really nice. Just tested the durability too. was clocked on the head by a parkade garage door and the helmet did its job very well and I didn't even lose consciousness! I will buy again.

Strengths:2006 Havoc: Quality construction, lots of vents for riding in 90+ degree weather.
Weaknesses:Must purge brow pad from collected sweat several times during harder trail rides, otherwise it will purge itself all over my glasses at the most inopportune times. Brow pad is now falling a part. Additional fitting pads will release from their double-sided tape after one ride. Chin strap is a bit coarse and not nearly as comfortable as my last helmet. Rear retention could be better.
Similar Products Used:Bell Influx
Bike Setup:Which ever one I'm riding
Bottom Line:Since I like my Giro ski helment, I was going to try a Giro Hex or Animas on closeout but came across this deal instead. This falls in well for helmets a step up from the bottom in the $40-60 price range, although I'd probably look at other options if I was paying $60 retail. I ride 3-4 times per week both trail & commuting. For my needs I won't be buying a Havoc again but will consider another helmet from Giro (Hex/Animas/Xen) next time.

Good for the occasional rider looking for a quality helmet.

Strengths:Very comfy, stylish, great ventilation
Weaknesses:Chin strap gets a little annoying, I find after awhile that it feels like it's rubbing/irritating underneath my neck a little.
Bike Setup:Trek Fuel 80, mostly stock
Bottom Line:It's a nice helmet - the Roc Loc 3 system holds it on tight. I like how it looks, the included visor is nice keeping some of the sun out of my eyes. It has some great ventilation built into it, you've got to love that. It definitely protects, I recently did an endo over my handlebars while heading down a slippery leaf covered hill when I couldn't stop in time for the log that was in my way =/ Clunked my head pretty good but it did the job.

The chin strap is a little irritating to me, it seems to rub a little bit after awhile, but meh...not the worst thing. I might take some neoprene or something and wrap it around the strap to provide a little cushion.

Bottom Line:Thankfully I havent had to test this helmet out by hitting my head, but it makes me feel safe wearing it. Also, the styling is pretty cool, it just seems to look better on than a lot of other helmets, especially in matt black. If anything happened this helmet I would definately replace it, but wouldnt complain if the straps were a bit more comfortable. They tend not to sit flat against your cheek, but after 2 mins you dont even notice it.

Bottom Line:The helmet works, as is evidenced by me sitting here stringing sentences together. I have, in other words, personally tried it out by doing an endo and landing on my head. I would not recommend this as a quality control measure, as I ended up with a strained neck and lots of chiropractic treatment, but the helmet kept my head from caving in, and that is what I bought it for. Otherwise, it is easy to fit, quite comfortable, and quite well vented. It is also cheap and easy to find replacement pads for it. A good product.

Strengths:- lightweight
- fit is awesome (especially on my odd shaped head), thanks in part to Roc Loc
- looks pretty cool
- good ventilation
Weaknesses:- visor not as effective as the one on the Mojave
Similar Products Used:Giro Mohave, and some Bell product
Bike Setup:I hate to see a bike get set up - it was probably innocent. Now look at it, rotting away in prison, doing time for some other bike's crime. Dreadful, really...
Bottom Line:I was a bit disappointed when Giro stopped making the Mojave - it was a pretty good helmet, and it was pretty cheap (less than 30.00 U.S., I figure).

I tried on a few Giros, because they're stylish, and because they actually fit my head (think Jean-Luc Picard shape, and you're pretty close). The Havoc fit, and the price was reasonable (well, more than I wanted to pay, but less than a lot of the helmets out there).

My only complaint is the visor doesn't seem to work as well as the one on the Mojave. It could be the way the helmet fits me, or it could be that the Mojave was actually poorly fitted. Whatever - it's a minor glitch.

I'll give it four chilis for value, because I still beleive it could be less pricy (but I am a cheap bast**d), and five chilis for overall rating, because it fits good, feels good and survived a fall off my car at 70 kph with only a few scratches.

Roc loc system is kinda cheap-o plastic and doesnt seem to adjust snugly or it just seems wierd to me but never had an issue with it coming loose. it just doesnt seem to snap in place very solid. once u get it adjusted it fits like a glove. my only gripe is that they coulda included more padding stickers cause i used the two or three that came with it - cut them into half pieces and placed them throughout the helmet instead of just three choice spots. it fit even better after that but still doesnt offer as much padding as my cheap Bell from Walmart. overall it does real well though. knocked off a chili for the padding.

Bonded outer shell, Straps are easy to adjust. i might add its the most easiest of any helmet that ive owned. out of the box i had it adjusted in a minute. I have and will only buy Giros, their top quality, ive never had any safty issues with them or malfunctions, and they always seem to have helmets that match the color of my bikes. This is a $70 helmet but at Galyans their helmets are all out of order and this one was one out of 10 that were in the wrong box, so i only paid 40, my gain thier loss for having helmets in the wrong boxes. so if theres a galyans near you stop in and you might just get a great deal!!

Bottom Line:Fits the shape of my head better than anything else I could find in that price range. Had the same problems with the velcro glue that others have reported causing the strap where it attaches to the inside of the helmet by my temples to detach. The strap snaps below my ears broke.

I just replaced it with a new one (nothing else fits as well). Interestingly, the attachment of the straps at the temples no longer uses Velcro. Instead there's a plastic attachment similar to where the Roc Loc thing attaches at the back of the helmet. Hope it works better.

Strengths:Did its job and perhaps that is the reason I'm able to write the revue. Downhill plunge with small log pile at bottom. About 30 minutes prior I scrubbed speed in same aea and no problems, this time I didn't scrub and I had to be going at least 15 mph and I hit that pile of logs and got launched. Landed half on my head and half on right shoulder - I guess i was starting to tuck. Helmet crackedon right front and liner ripped out on the left side. Vents were filled with dirt. Hate to think what would have happened if I wasn't wearing a helmet. By cracking and tearing it probably absorbed enough energy to save my neck. Thanks Giro.

Strengths:Fits my nogging, and more importantly it does its job!
Weaknesses:None
Bottom Line:I had my '03 Giro Havoc for less than 10 days. Out riding on the trail I came to a particularly steep section. I guess I was carrying a little too much speed and the front wheel hit a root causing me to flip forward. I landed sideways, head-first, onto a big log that was lying on the side. I was probably going 10 mph at the time. The bike survived with nary a scratch or anything bent out of shape, and I had some scratches on my leg and shoulder - nothing major. That's basically because the force of the impact was solely directed to the side of my forehead. The helmet is cracked on the front right corner. If it were not for the helmet I am sure I would be in the hospital right now with a serious head injury, or something even worse! Because I fulfilled my responsibility by wearing a helmet, and because the helmet did its job by protecting my head, I walked away from the trail (albeit with a terrible headache), instead of being carted out on a stretcher.

Bottom Line:I needed to replace my Mojave since it was getting beat up and a bit loose. Perf Bikes had the Havoc on sale at a reasonable price and it fit as well as my trusty Mojave. As many other reviewers commented the RocLoc3 strap retention system sucks. It's affixed to the helmet by velcro. While this was never a problem with my Mojave which uses the same setup, I was disappointed with the Havoc. The strap came off on my first ride. This problem is compounded when you mount a light up there and do some serious trail riding which was ride #2. Giro must know this is a weak system since the 2002 models come with a metal pivot point on the helmet with a pivoting "snap fastener and a plastic RocLoc strap. Much better design. If you're going to buy one of these lids, get the 2002 model, easily identifiable by the orange lower rear color and the plastic RocLoc strap.

One more comment: Giro customer service was great. They responded to my e-mail within an hour and sent me new velcro pads within 2 days of my e-mail to them. Way to go!

The new design has never loosened up, and is adjustable while riding, which is nice in early morning or late afternoon.
The roc-loc 3 is also a little nicer than the RL-2, as you can adjust the snugness while riding.

Strengths:Got it at a great price. It's light and attractive. Loads of vents too.
Weaknesses:Might be expensive if you buy it full price

Bottom Line:It's a great helmet for the price, I love it

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $100.00
Purchased At:local cycling shop
Strengths:Cool looks - light weight....
Weaknesses:Cheesy velcro attachment system which seems destined for failure at the most inopportune moments...
Similar Products Used:Bell
Bike Setup:'01 RM Instinct stock except for replaced grips (ODI locking system), new tires (Panaracers) - the rest as it came.
Bottom Line:Bottom line here is the same as it was for an earlier reviewer.....$100 bones and this much of a sub-par attachment system from nylon webbing to foam helmet? Rode with this exact helmet, same size, in CO with my brother. (his helmet). Found it so much more comfortable & cooler than my old school Bell figured I'd pick one up once I was back home....so got the same size - and couldn't get it to fit no matter what I tried. Finally realized repositioning the velcro straps would get the retention system to hold me melon where I needed it to....and have never gotten the velcro to stick well since....finally replaced the cheese velcro stickers with some heavy duty Home Depot replacements and it finally works....but for this price and this purpose shouldn't the velcro hold like superglue?

Weaknesses:Can't find any
Bottom Line:It's wortth $85 to protect my melon.

Strengths:Good fit, lightweight, looks great
Weaknesses:Velcro straps suck, expensive
Similar Products Used:Specialized and Bell helmets
Bottom Line:It's a good helmet, fits well and looks great, but you need to replace the velcro and for 100, this shouldn't happen. If you can afford it, get it. I love mine and I will probably buy another Giro, but they will be contending with Specialized and Bell for my bucks.

Bottom Line:u should either get this or an exodus at twowheeltransit.com for 74 dollars.

Strengths:let's face it, this helmet has a cool design. Air vents work well, and I love how the visor comes off easily and it is adjustable. Fit is pretty good.
Weaknesses:This is where I justify giving a review after wearing the helmet FOUR times. I do not think I have worn it once where the velcro somewhere on the helmet has come off. I cannot describe to you how distracting that is on the trail or on the road. $90 for a helmet and the velcro comes off!?! Guys at the bike shop just said, "Yeah, it happens. I just replace all the velcro before I even wear it." Thank for the hot tip Sparky.
Similar Products Used:I've had a $40 Bll that was better quality than this.
Bike Setup:Decent hardtail and decent used road bike
Bottom Line:Within the first 10 minutes of wearing this thing the velcro comes off. On the other hand I had one of the worst wrecks in recent memory and my brand new helmet looks pretty scratched and banged up. Not so, the scratches just wipped right off. I thought that was pretty nice. I still think I maybe should've gotten the Bell Nemisis 2 I tried on at the bike shop. Giro quality seems questionable. Other than that it's a pretty decent lid.

Strengths:Nice cool vents, they really work.Cool look
Weaknesses:Velcro pads suck, they came off after two weeks, so I could'nt get the roc-loc to fit securely
Similar Products Used:my first helmet
Bike Setup:amoeba and deore lx components
Bottom Line:I did not expect a helmet this expensive, to have crappy velcro pads that hold the roc-loc straps.Came off after 2 weeks, I had to buy 3m heavy duty velcro pads with adhesive back to replace the piece of sh*t that fell off.Now it works great, no more problems. Buy the helmet and the extra velcro pads if you really want it.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $100.00
Purchased At:R.E.I.
Strengths:Super light, plenty of vents to keep you as cool as possible. Seems to stay put no matter what you attempt to force your bike over.
Weaknesses:Kinda sucked paying a hundred bones for a helmet, but I've only got one head and half of one brain so I guess it's o.k.
Bottom Line:If you are like me and have resisted wearing a helmet for as long as possible this one is the perfect helmet for you. Or, if you are like the rest of the more sane mountain bike world and are plenty used to wearing a helmet this one is a great choice as well. I love mine!

Price Paid: $100.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Excellent fit, stays put during bumpy rides, light-weight, well-ventilated, visor stays in place, looks good.
Weaknesses:I don't like paying $100 for a helmet. But after trying it on, I just had to have it.
Similar Products Used:Giro Exodus, Specialized King Cobra, Bell Image

Bottom Line:Great helmet. I tried the pricier E2 and found no difference in fit or weight-- just the $70 price hike for the E2's fancier colors.
