What good is a retention system that easily pops out of the helmet? It provides a false sense of security.

The Giro E-2 is the best Trail/XC/AllMtn helmet I have owned.
Like its predecessors, it survived my occasional endos and wrecks on tech single track & fire road washout ruts with no visible damage to shell or foam.
It was recently destroyed following crash while on a mountain ride when my left handlebar was grabbed by bush branches while avoiding a huge mud puddle across the whole fire-road on a fast downhill descent. Oww..! I'm still digging dirt out of the rash on my right elbow!!
The shell material remained intact with some gravel dents and scuffs; the foam inner was broken in numerous locations above the right ear location. The helmet did its job perfectly in protecting my head from a potentially serious concussion..or worse. At least so far.
The E-2 gets my top recommendation, if you can still find one, unfortunately it's been discontinued and superceded by the Giro Athlon, now my replacement.
Buy it, love it, trust it, full kudos! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I got it on sale, which is the only way I would buy this helmet, which is awesome nonetheless. Giro has improved the Roc Loc system from using velcro and such to hold it in place, to being stuck in the styrofoam of the helmet by some kind of ball pivot thingy. It stays in place, which is all ya need to know. It seems like a great cross country helmet, but could be used for anything except for where a full faced helmet is needed. The visor thing doesn't bother me because I've never needed a visor that needs to be moved, or removed at all, I'm not that picky about the sun. If that bothers you, just get some cheap sunglasses to go along with it. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$80.00 | | Strengths: | Fit was good - not 'special', but very good. Got a great value on it (no way should you pay even half of the MSRP listed at the top of this review screen - like $200 or something??). It works well for the purpose intended, and I am glad about that! | | Weaknesses: | Pads soak up sweat to the point that they start dripping down the front on most rides. This is a problem I have with every helmet I have had, so I probably would not hold it against the E2. | | Bike Setup: | Mtn: Santa Cruz Blur (classic) with XC setup Road: Specialized Roubaix | | Bottom Line: | This helmet served me well both on the trails and on the road. I had no complaints and I am extremely happy to say that it stood up to the ultimate test.
On a solo ride at Stanky Creek mtb trail yesterday I suffered a freak (and spectacular) crash at high speed. I landed, in this order, on my head, left elbow, and left torso. Usual bruises and abrasions, but after a very hard head impact on compacted gravel/rock, I was able to get up and start worrying about my bike. Only a lingering headache the next day, and the need to puchase a new lid. The helmet split/cracked in about three places on the left side right above my ear. Exactly what it is supposed to do.
If I had not had it on (or maybe if I had a lesser helmet), I might still be in the creek righ now mumbling for help... | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Best I have owned by far. It also saved me. I misjudged an obstacle and fell 7 ft onto the sand landing on my head. I fractured two vertebrae in my spine, but the helmet absorbed a lot of the impact (it's cracked everywhere) and prevented my spine from taking the full amount of impact. Any helmet that does its' job and reduces the amount of injury to the user is a great helmet in my book. When it comes to your safety, do not compromise it for the sake of saving a few dollars. When i woke up sometime later i was, well, alive and not brain dead. the helmet shattered into a million little foam chuncks with the helmet still in tact due to the shell. This is what the helmet should do in a hard impact... take the blow so my head doesn't have to. $80.00 | | Purchased At: | Supergo | | Strengths: | Excellent ventilation. Very light. | | Weaknesses: | A bit tight in width. Roc-Loc "unlocs" easily. | | Similar Products Used: | Bell Sweep XC | | Bike Setup: | Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Expert 120 | | Bottom Line: | This is a great helmet, but it's eclipsed by the Bell Sweep XC. See my review on the Bell for its details.
I've had the E2 for more than a year-and-a-half and was generally very happy with it. I wasn't even in the market for a new helmet until I just happened to try on the Sweep XC when I saw it on sale. I'd always felt that putting on the E2 was a bit of a squeeze. My head is wide so finding well-fitting helmets is tough. The E2 was the best fitting I could find at the time and I wanted to get a good high-end helmet (I value my head more than my wallet). Other than the tightness, the one major fault with the E2, and Giros in general, is the Roc-Loc fitment system. It's justs way to easy to release the straps and have it go loose on you while putting it on or taking it off. I'm far from an all-thumbs guy, but I was regularly hitting the buttons and having the thing come out of adjustment. This is where Bell's GPS trounces Giro.
The ventilation on the E2 is superior to the Sweep XC though. On long rides in warm weather, I tend to finish up with less sweat dripping off the back of my head while wearing the E2. The vents are just shaped better (and bigger) than the Bell. The visor is better too. They're both adjustable so you can flip them up when you don't need them. Since you can flip them up, I don't see why Bell went with such a small visor. Giro's is noticeably bigger and does a better job of keeping the sun out of your eyes and low-hanging branches from whipping your face.
I'm keeping this as a back-up helmet, but my Sweep XC is the one that goes riding with me now. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$70.00 | | Purchased At: | JensonUSA | | Strengths: | coolest air flow, RocLoc fits well*, light | | Weaknesses: | *All the good features are trumped by the poor engineering of the RocLoc strap attachments. Seeing reviews above - it appears tha Giro has dispensed with velcro and has gone with a plastic nipple that plugs into an insert in the foam to hold the plastic RocLoc straps in place. That's the weak spot - the attachment simply is not strong enough for the tensions applied. My first helmet had the nipple pop out and would not stay in thereafter. I sent them a large under warranty and they sent me a medium back. Then they sent a large - on my first ride the nipple popped out. I popped it back in but do not have faith that this will last long. Someone above comments on this same problem so I assume it is somewhat common. Two helmets have done it with me so what are the odds? | | Similar Products Used: | Various Bells (hot), Garneaus etc. | | Bike Setup: | Trek OCLV HT, bomber, XT. | | Bottom Line: | No matter the great features - helmet is useless if RocLoc does not function. This needs to be fixed especially in a helmet of such "stature" and price - actually should probably be recalled. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$80.00 | | Strengths: | styly, good fit, good air flow | | Weaknesses: | strap stretches each ride, plastic strap clips break easily, roc loks slip and sometimes come out of their attachments when you try to let the plastic strap out, much heavier than advertised weights, goofy crash replacement policy that helps Giro more than the consumer | | Similar Products Used: | all kinds of GIro and Specialized helmets | | Bottom Line: | Why can't they use strap material that doesn't stretch when it gets wet from sweat? My Specialized doesn't suffer from this problem. Also the weight was more like 330 g rather than the sub 300-g weight they report (Specialized weights were as advertised). Worst I think is the crash policy that gives you a 20% discount on a fully priced helmet at a dealer. Big whoopy, you can get them for cheaper than that at any good discount or mail order outfit. Specialized crash replacement is $20 for a new helmet - that is meaningful! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$80.00 | | Purchased At: | performancebike.com | | Strengths: | -- fit the best of any helmets I tried on (and I tried on literally dozens) -- light -- ventilation -- looks/snazzy red white & blue colors | | Weaknesses: | apparent design and/or materials and/or manufacturing flaw in the snaps that hold the fit system to the helmet body | | Similar Products Used: | My old helmet is a Giro Torero; good thing I hung onto it with the problems I've had with my new one! Also tried on a number of helmets from Giro, Bell, Serfas, and Louis Garneau. For my sort of long & thin head shape, Giros seem to fit better than the rest. | | Bike Setup: | 02 Trek 8000 97 Specialized Stumpjumper ~93 Schwinn Crosscut ~8x Diamondback Curaca | | Bottom Line: | I looked long and hard for a helmet that, in this order, fit well, had good ventilation for my sweaty head, was reasonably light, was reasonably priced, and looked good. After trying on about 20 different helmets over the course of a couple months, I finally decided that if I could find a Giro E2 with the RocLoc4 for a better price than they were typically charging, I'd get it. I ordered my helmet at the end of November 2003. When I received the helmet, to my dismay I discovered that the plastic snap that secures the fit system to the helmet body was broken. I promptly returned the helmet to Performance and a couple of weeks later received a replacement. I used the replacement from the middle of December until yesterday when one of the snaps broke as I was putting the helmet on. It broke in the same way that the snap on the first helmet was broken before I even got the chance to use it. This is really unacceptable on a helmet that is touted as the top of the line. Other than the apparent flaw in the snaps, the helmet has worked great, and I am looking forward to hopefully being able to use it again after warranty repair or replacement. But because of this problem that has TWICE rendered my E2 useless, I must knock my rating down considerably from what it would have been. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$80.00 | | Purchased At: | wheelworld.com | | Strengths: | very comfortable. pivoting visor. ease of sizing adjustment with Roc Loc 4. compact design, doesn't overhang to the rear. excellent ventilation. | | Weaknesses: | the styling is a matter of personal taste. | | Similar Products Used: | various Bells | | Bottom Line: | I've always worn Bell helmets but couldn't find a comparable Bell with the GPS adjustment system to try on. The LBS (wheelworld.com) had the E2 on sale and it seemed to fit me perfectly, and looked to be well made so I went for it.
The adjustable angle visor is essential once you've tried it, and is reason enough to pick the Giro over a Bell with fixed visor. The fixed visors always seemed to be too low and in my way, so I'd end up removing them.
The Roc Loc 4 adjustment system works easily and well, and allows me to wear a skull cap for sweat control and still get a perfect fit. The other nice thing about the Giro's, at least for me, is that my head size (58cm) falls in the middle of the medium size range, where as with the Bell a 58cm is right on the border between M and L.
My value rating is for the $80 price, I'd rate it lower if I had paid "full sucker list". Overall, I like this helmet a lot and would buy it again. My next road helmet will probably be a Pneumo based on good fit of the E2. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Other than that this is the best helmet I have owned, but that is a matter of fit more than anything. Bell and others make just as good of a helmet, it's what fits your head that is the most important. Everyone should keep in mind that this is a XC racing helmet, not a downhill or freeride helmet. It is light. Light weight and light protection. Don't buy this if you are a weekend worrior or alike either, get the model down with more protection and a cheaper cost. As for the money. Be smart. Sure enough, the straps had already come unglued even before I got the helmet out of the package! I immediately sent it back and ordered the 2002 E2, which has the Roc Loc 4 system. What an improvement! The design on the Roc Loc 4 system incorporates "lock-in" side straps. All I can say is, spend a little extra dough and get the model with Roc Loc 4. Unfortunately, it's only available on 2003-2003 E2's and Pneumo's, but well worth the extra cost. I have heard the 2003 helmets with Roc Loc 3 have better velcro straps, but I can't say for sure. The helmet itself is great-looking and very light, and super-cools my head while I hardly even realize I'm wearing it! The adjustable visor is great also. I would have said price but someone here recently posted an interesting saying. $10 head = $10 helmet (this puts life into perspective) | | Similar Products Used: | Old Bell (broke it last year) | | Bike Setup: | Trek Liquid | | Bottom Line: | I have only been riding this helmet for about 6 weeks now. I was forced to ride urban because of the snow still left in our local trails. So as the story goes, rolling nicely along a set of steps until I get the bright idea (sarcasim) to wheelie drop the last step onto the sidewalk, I neglected to look up and see the 4" Steel Bar that held the canopy up over these "steps" and KA-BOOM with all my strength I pulled up to "wheelie drop" and that was it for me Lights Out! My head connected firmly with the steel beam and like a bird hitting a glass window I dropped to the concrete below, landing square on my back and shoulder enough force to burst my hydration pack, my bike continued to fly through the air until grinding to a halt 10 feet away. I only remember seeing stars for a moment but it seemed like an eternity, I promptly got up and rolled my injured body and bike to the next block to lie and think about what had just happened. Upon arriving home that night, curiosity got the best of me and I had a closer look at my helmet and to my amazement It was cracked through, I thought to myself what a bang! Guess I gotta buy a new helmet, so I contacted a local bike shop in Truro, NS where the owner got me all the information I needed to get a "crash replacement" from Giro. I sent my old helmet back and paid $60US to get a new 03 E2. The canadian distributor had fantastic service. While waiting for my New E2 to arrive I had to borrow an old BELL from a friend and now I realize just how "Exceptional" the Giro E2 actually was. Scrimp a few bucks on your bike and Protect your nogan. You only got 1 and besides you can always upgrade your bike!! PS the bike wont make you a better rider, just a reasonable facsilime of a better rider. Lexan) shell fused to polystyrene impact-absorber | | Weaknesses: | -Before the 2002 model, rocloc was held on by self-adhesive velcro that eventually comes unglued from heat and sweat | | Similar Products Used: | Giro E2 2001 | | Bike Setup: | Specialized '00 Enduro Comp | | Bottom Line: | Don't buy the really cheap E2s that might still be floating around unless you can verify the rocloc system is held on without velcro. The only velcro on the 2002 and later helmets is used to attach the padding.
I should also mention that I retired my 2001 E2 by taking a three foot crowbar to it. It was at that point I saw why it's important for the outer shell to be glued to the polystyrene underneath (giro calls it "inmold"). In going to look at a helmet for someone else, recently, I was disgusted to find many helmets with a thin polycarbonate outer simply taped on around the base of the polystyrene. When I bashed the helmet with the crowbar, the polystyrene cracked in certain places as the impact was absorbed. The polycarbonate, though, remained more or less undamaged. Because the polystyrene was glued to the outer polycarbonate, though, it stayed in place. If it was taped over, without any gluing, the bits of polycarbonate would be free to dislodge between the polycarbonate and one's head, greatly diminishing the helmets potential to protect against secondary impacts. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I've never crashed or fallen on this helmet. The most is maybe some sraches from going under branches. A over $100 helmet should not be developing cracks. $100.00 | | Purchased At: | lbs, Canberra | | Strengths: | light weight, good fit, heaps of ventilation, great customer service (USA) | | Weaknesses: | Roc-Loc 3 (those not so sticky velco dots) | | Similar Products Used: | Bell | | Bike Setup: | Santa Cruz Bullit, Jnr T | | Bottom Line: | This review is about an '01 E2 with Roc-Loc 3. My E2 saved me big time on the weekend after a heavy impact 'head v tree'. I have an impression of the inside of the E2 on my head and unfortunatly now the helmet is split through the middle. I initially purchased the helmet cause it was light, fitted very well and had great ventilation. The helmets only weakness was those not so sticky velco dots (that are mentioned below). However after I contacted Giro (USA) they sent me better dots that have not come off and I had them within a week. So only do they make a great helmet that saves your head, they also have pretty awesome after sales service (thanks Giro).

I have a big noggin and the various Bell and Met helmets in the same price range just didn't fit well. I think it's probably a bit expensive considering that comparable Met and Bell products are approx. $20 cheaper but it was worth it for me because it's so comfortable. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$80.00 | | Purchased At: | online | | Strengths: | Lightwieght, fit, decent air flow. | | Weaknesses: | not much. being a bit picky here, but for the price the straps and the clasp fit could be better. | | Similar Products Used: | Specialized, Giro | | Bike Setup: | blah, blah, blah | | Bottom Line: | I wouldnt pay full price for this, doesnt keep me *that* much cooler than my old helmet. I don't understand why the people below are complaining about fit, fit is remarkable for me, must be suited to my head shape. Also, the retention system they are complaining about is last years, there is no velcro holding the straps/pads in place. The coolmax pads absorb a lot of sweat, but once they reach capacity, with just a little pressure the sweat comes pouring down into the eyes...recommend a head band. Extremely lightweight, but almost too fragile, I am afraid to even knock it slightly for fear of cracking it. Can't speak for how it performs for its intended use (protecting your head in a crash). Haven't crashed on my head this year...knock on wood.
Overall, I think its a great helmet...waiting to see how it performs when I *really* need it.

In endurance sports like XC, I rate this as a major plus. Haven't enjoyed: dialing in the proper fit so helmet doesn't slide forward, and re-aligning Roc-Loc ratchet thingie in back of helmet when it pulls apart. Fitting issues being so subjective, I suggest you REALLY make sure the helmet fits before you buy it. The padding is thin enough to not allow for error. Although I think $160 is a silly amount of money for a helmet, I take head protection seriously enough to pay it. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$180.00 | | Purchased At: | LBS | | Strengths: | Not to sure will let you know when I find one. | | Weaknesses: | This helmet is unsafe! Giro uses very poor glue to fasten the straps to the shell of the helmet. If you sweat like all the other riders this will happen. Witch makes the ROC-LOC useless. Dose not have a good fit for the big bucks they want for this pos. It is also a few sizes to big. But the thing that has dissapointed me most is Giro's customer service. The only option to fix the problem is to send you the same damn glue that dose NOT work in the first place. Otherwise they got your $200 and they could care less about you ever buying there product again.

Easy to operate visor. | | Weaknesses: | The need to regularly replace the velcro on the inside of the shell makes me HATE this product. Did I say HATE? I sometimes ride with a hot-noggin which means I have to adjust the retaining straps by disconnecting from the velcro & re-attatching. I love trying to calculate how much glue is left on the velcro and how hot it will get to figure if I can get one more ride or have to go to the hardware store for more velcro first. The first time the velcro let go I was ripping on a tricky downhill. The helmet came apart and down over my face. Not only did I almost wreck & have to ride out with NO helmet, but I had no place to put it exept to hang it from my handlebar. The experience would have made more sense if the helmet said "TARGET" on it instead of GIRO. RocLoc3 is unquestionably great - ridiculously easy to adjust the fit.
Omigawd, are they kidding about the price?!? It's a piece of styrofoam, for gawds' sake! Don't ever pay full price for this thing. Bought mine on serious markdown - and got stuck with a piercingly-bright yellow that is nice to have in traffic and sucks just about everywhere else.
Had similar problems with the glue that are well-described elsewhere.
The helmet is sized a little large - my L/XL is definitely bigger than my Gila L/XL, and with the RocLoc cinched all the way down, I still have a little too much room. (I take it up with a bandanna, so it's not critical, only slightly annoying.)
Bottom line: Eh, right enough if purchased at a serious markdown, but certainly not the end-all be-all product the MSRP would suggest. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$160.00 | | Purchased At: | Performance | | Bottom Line: | I bought this Giro E2 a few weeks ago for road cycling; the only helmet not on sale in the shop and the only one I liked...sigh.
I crashed on it yesterday - on pavement - so wanted to let everyone know it works great in crashes! Helmet suffered some - cracked/chipped styrofoam, scrapes, etc. - but my head didn't. One very small sore spot I didn't notice till the day after. Some initial short-term memory loss, but it came back. & no dizziness! Crashed before the SF Grand Prix race - stayed to watch the whole thing!
I'm about to buy another one.... | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$98.00 | | Purchased At: | Cool Sports Equipment | | Strengths: | Well ventilated, very light weight, and great fit adjustment. | | Weaknesses: | Very pricey even at a sale price. | | Bike Setup: | Klein Adept Pro with full XTR, Chris King wheelset, and Race Face Next LP. | | Bottom Line: | The fit adjustment took only a few minutes to dial in. It is so light and ventilated it is "almost" like not wearing a helmet at all! I haven't had the issue with the velcro straps like others, but I have only had it for 3 months. If it weren't for the high price, it would be 5's across the board. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$150.00 | | Purchased At: | cambriabike i thing (http://www.cambriabike.com) | | Strengths: | looks, weight, airflo, adjustability -- rocloc 3 system | | Weaknesses: | you need to be careful with the velcro tabs for the rocloc retention straps | | Similar Products Used: | spec, bell | | Bike Setup: | 2001 fisher HKEK with SRAM rockets (gotta love grip shift), upgraded chain (stock one broke in like 1 week -- operator error)... just going to upgrade stuff as I break it... that shouldn't take too long. | | Bottom Line: | hmmmm... I bought this system after a wreck that basicly split my old spec in half (I'm still here so that's good) I tend not to notice my head getting hot or sweating as much anymore (more time to focus on that burning sensation in my legs). I like the fact that I can tighten or loosen the system withought slowing down or stoping (little squeeze thingies inthe back) depending on the terain. Haven't crashed bad enough to test how effective it is. (hope I don't have to anytime soon)...
Bottom line: I'd recomend it.. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$70.00 | | Purchased At: | Price Point | | Strengths: | Light, Looks, Breathes well, comfortable straps, visor is easy to adjust or remove | | Weaknesses: | New Release Price, Only marketed to MTB makes a great road helmet minus the visor | | Similar Products Used: | Bell stuff | | Bike Setup: | Litespeed Tsali Team issue | | Bottom Line: | Best helmet I have owned. I use it on road and mtb. Due to thin padding a sweat band is often needed because w/o one the sweat goes straight for the eyes. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$150.00 | | Purchased At: | Cycle Cambridge | | Strengths: | I only go it about 4 hours ago so I don't know too much about it yet. By the looks of it and from what I've heard it has an amazing vent system. The looks!! you won't find a cooler looking lid around. Its fairly light too. | | Weaknesses: | OUCH!!!! HOW MUCH??!! | | Similar Products Used: | Had a Giro Helios untill it met some rocks. | | Bike Setup: | 2001 VPS Norco Team DH. I put a pair of rings and a bash guard on the front to make it a little better on the hills. Other than that stock. | | Bottom Line: | It looks great and it was pricy but if it works as good as they say then what the hell? Its better than sitting in the ER wishing I had bought that E2. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$150.00 | | Purchased At: | Wheatridge Cyclery | | Strengths: | Light, Unbelievable venting, good straps and retention device, Improved visor, Fantastic color(Gold)!, | | Weaknesses: | $$$$$$$$$$ | | Similar Products Used: | Giro Exodus(2)
| | Bike Setup: | Titus Racer-X with all the fancy gee-gaws | | Bottom Line: | I had to get this helmet --- it was all my bikes fault. She's a Gold anodized Racer-X. She insisted -- she cajoled -- she threatened mechanical after mechanical, if I did not get it. Well, "Honey" gets what she wants.... Seriously, this things venting is incredible! I ride alot in the winter and I really couldn't use this when it was really cold. My head would just freeze -- compared to the Exodus! It seems to fit me a little better than the Exodus. The new visor is a HUGE improvement. I was constantly putting new velcro on and/or re-glueing it -- Is there anything as fun as having your visor flop down over your face when you're roosting a descent? Lastly, the finish/paint is amazing -- I've put almost 1000 miles on it and it looks like new!!! So, as always, shop around -- I've seen last years E2 for 60 or 70 bucks. Unless you have a bike, like mine......What? Yes, dear, I'm coming..... Happy Trails!

Too bad it just costs too much, but hey, it's protecting my noogin! I guess you have to ask yourself how important is your head. Great fit. Very breezy/cool! Just too bad that my LBS doesn't sell it (shipping cost is crazy!). Don't get it at the retail price. Jenson sells it for $109. All around, still worth the discounted price I paid for it. And the best thing of all, it matches my Mojo (Yaeger blue) and summit shoes! That's what you call icing on the cake. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$69.00 | | Purchased At: | Wheel World | | Strengths: | Price (2000 model), looks, fit | | Weaknesses: | None | | Similar Products Used: | None | | Bike Setup: | Gary Fisher Supercaliper | | Bottom Line: | This is a great helmet. It fits me very nice. DO NOT pay the crazy "list" price. If you buy a 2000 model (which is exactly the same helmet, maybe not in the same colors) you can get a great price ($ 69 on Wheel World). I was not going to pay the $ 179 they want for a 2001.

$79.00 | | Purchased At: | Price Point | | Strengths: | Light, looks good, fairly comfortable. Good air flow. | | Weaknesses: | Pain to adjust. | | Similar Products Used: | GT Pegasus | | Bike Setup: | Why would this matter for a helmet review? :) | | Bottom Line: | I hate to say it, but this helmet didn't meet my expectations. Now admittedly my expectations were pretty high. And I got a good deal on it. I wear it all the time and it's better than most helmets out there. But it's not the be-all end-all that I hoped it would be. I think my GT Pegasus fits better. The "Roc-Loc" thing doesn't adjust enough to be useful. Overall it's a good helmet but not nearly as nice as I hoped it would be when I ordered it :( | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
