Strengths:very tough shell and extremely durable, hey they've lasted me two long seasons of riding and still going strong - saved my shins/knees on numerous occasions from rocks/pedals and highspeed crashes
Weaknesses:the top straps are annoying if you pedal alot cause there in the back part of your knee , i got used to it and it doesnt bother me none but i know alot of guys hate these for that reason
Similar Products Used:raceface leg guards/six six one

Strengths:Ergonomics- feels compfortable even when strapped to bare leg. Wraps around back of leg.
Weaknesses:Short straps
Bottom Line:I put these on and ride and basically forget they're on. I had a few close encounters with my knees/shins with the ground and rocks and these work well. I wouldn't ride without them and for the price it is a no brainer. Just be careful where you buy them because I saw prices as high as $90, three times what I paid.

Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $65.00
Purchased At:Jenson
Strengths:Excellent shin and lower knee protection.
Weaknesses:Poor stitching (comes undone), top straps rub where the back of your knee bends, straps are too small for people with muscular legs (I understand the downhill version straps are a little bit longer fyi).
Similar Products Used:n/a
Bike Setup:DH rig
Bottom Line:I fall often and where I ride is super rocky. After 2 years of riding here I cannot count the number of times I have kissed these things after they saved my knees/shins. Bottom line is my kneecaps would be destroyed without them.

There are a few problems with them however, the ones that bother me most is the way the knee cap straps are placed and the way it rubs the top of your knees raw after long days of riding.
Most recently I have done over the bar superman falls too and have a bruise right overtop of my kneecap which I believe is due to the pads slipping down a little bit.. it would be nice if they had just a little bit taller padding. That way they could move the straps up higher to solve two problems with one stone. If they had an independently mobile kneecap like the POC armor that would be even better!

Oh, as far as the stitching coming undone, the best way to fix this is to grab some zip ties and a drill. Just drill right through the plastic shell, through the strap (but not the soft padding), then use two zip ties to keep everything in place. Has worked great for me!

Favorite Trail:Anderson Truck Trail
Duration Product Used:3 months
Purchased At:Pricepoint.com
Strengths:Secure - they won't slide in a crash and leave you exposed. Very tough materials - the plastic on mine have many deep scrapes which I am glad weren't flesh.
Weaknesses:A bit bulky and not as comfortable for longer rides with climbing but not too bad.
Similar Products Used:Fox Launch, O'Neal Rocker, RockGardn Landing Zone, Lizard Skins Softcell, Troy Lee Combat, Troy Lee Lopes.
Bike Setup:Giant Reign X
Bottom Line:Tough and secure protection for your legs. Definitely one of the top designs on the market - recommended for FR and DH.

I've tried a lot of different guards and I've found that fit can be very personal. Try to check these out at a shop before you buy.

Weaknesses:Made for people with absolutely no legs. I'm a road sprinter originally, so trying to get the velcro to properly fasten is an impossible task if I want to retain bloodflow. Simple solution though. Pick the stitching and relocate.

Strengths:Comfortable, fit well and do the job they're meant to.
Weaknesses:Ankle Srap & Calf Strap could be short for some.
Similar Products Used:Fox Launch, 661 Veggie
Bike Setup:Used to be on a Trance, now on a HT, buying an STP in January.
Bottom Line:Great pads, although probably a bit over the top for what is essentially XC riding. These days I'm a bit more complacent so take them only if I'm doing the rockier loop. I've thought of getting Kyle Straits or something but the protection of these is just impassable.

Heat wasn't really much of an issue, however I decided to customize them a bit. I cut the foam from the inside to widen it around the slots in the plastic shell. This worked really well, they now get a bit more air flow to the inside. You can cut the foam with a sharp knife & it will not deteriorate any further than what you have cut Period! This impressed me - they foam is top quality & they are made really well! If race face (roach) is reading this - why not make the foam holes a bit bigger on your new design?

I have also cut off the middle calf strap, it's not needed. For those that don't want to cut it off you can strap it around the front of the pad, I did this for a while before just cutting it off all together. The ankle strap is kind of short, but I suppose it's a good thing, means I can't wear it any higher than where it's meant to go - I suppose it's why they stay put, the actually can't go down or up even if they wanted to. Could be an issue for someone with thicker ankles though!

Bottom Line:Thought I would try these out based on reading a lot of review from different companies. These fit like a glove. They really conform to your legs (kind of slightly wrap around). Great quality! The only problem is for people with slightly muscular calves; the male part of the velcro will not reach the female. Other than that, great armor!!

Bike Setup:Marin Wolf ridge set at 5.5" w RP3 rear, 36 Talas up front, homegrown Hope pro2`s on 719, Thomson, RF, Juicy7, SRAM
Bottom Line:Dunno wa ya ***Freeriders*** are all made of?
Judged from the design of the Race Face / Roach Rally FR knee / shinguards it cannot be much more than skin, bones, and tendons...
The male velcro ain`t nowhere near reaching the hairy female counterpart around my calves, so it spends its life rippin`up the elastic instead of gettin`cosy with its female partner.
Lengthwise the fit of my medium is great(I´m 5"7` sub 160lb).

To get to the local GOOD STUFF ya kinda have to climb a couple of thousand feet before descending, so you tend to develop strong calves..
Maybe it`s made for all yer chopper transport and liftbased ridin`?

Purchased At:Xmas gift
Strengths:Outstanding fit and comfort, secure and tough
Weaknesses:The straps that cross behind the knee can be mildly irritating, but they fit so well overall that these straps don't need to be tight. The stitching on one Velcro pads is coming loose, but I can fix that.
Bike Setup:'06 Jamis Dakar XC Pro
Bottom Line:I like 'em and I wear 'em on every ride. As I stated above, I'm an XC rider who's gotten tired of getting chewed up in falls (I'm past the age where I think scars are cool). I haven't had a lower leg injury since I got these, but the scuffs and scrapes on the plastic indicate that I would have if I hadn't been wearing them. That's enough to make them worth wearing. They're comfortable enough that I don't even notice them most of the time. The one thing I do notice is that the knee pads squeak on sweaty skin, but it's no big deal. I'll probably add a layer of Lycra to them to eliminate the noise.

Bottom Line:I must have tried on or bought at least a dozen differnt types of knee/shin pads since I started freeriding. Dianese, Fox, 661, etc. but the ROACH FR pads are the best by far, they are comfy to wear, they stay in place and you forget they are on when you are riding. The only bad thing that I have to say is that the top two straps cut into the back of your leg when they are super tight, so my suggestion would be to NOT tighten them so much lol.

Bike Setup:stock Trek 4900
Bottom Line:Great protection for my shins and knees - even when flying through branches. Everytime I ride I cut up my legs, I don't do much Freeriding but more XC with a bit of jumping/logging etc. Overall, the legs seem to get hot at first but once you start moving you'll notice the vents actually work well. I purchased this b/c of the reviews on this website. great stuff, now I feel more confident to do crazier XC rides. At first the behind the knee straps started to get itchy and putting pressure but i loosened them, they stayed, and it's better now. I fell on my first ride attempting a 6 log climb and instead of worrying I laughed as I fell - didn't feel a thing. Top quality item here. Highly recommended.

Stitching is all I am worried about, I know RaceFace does a warranty on it but still, a new product shouldn't fall apart.

Bottom Line:Great shin guard! I really love the honeycomb padding. I may have hit my shin more times than I realize, but I can't feel the impact when I do. I can kick my shin into my pedal hard without even really feeling it. Does not slip around. I went with the XL since I'm 6'3" and the knee pad could be a little short, but I haven't scrapped my knee yet, so I guess it's fine. The ventilation is nice, but I still sweat a lot since I would sweat a lot even if I rode naked.

All in all, a great pad!

First the middle strap on the right leg fell off during a ride. Okay, it happens. A few weeks later, the left leg middle strap came off. Its still okay because I can still wear them. then the lower strap comes off. Give me a break here, Roach!! Bottom Line:Great fitting pads, great protection. They just don't move, are light (you forget that you have them on). Little more venting would be nice, but nothing too unbearable, even in the summer. Stitching could be beefed-up, but that's easily fixable. A little pricey, but you get excellent protection and great fit, which is hard to find in leg armour - most of it either moves or chafes you. RF should make small size as well, M is on the borderline of being too big if you have short legs and are below 5'8" tall. Great product, worth the $$$.

Strengths:Fantastic fit
Weaknesses:Poor stitching design/construction
Bike Setup:SC VP-free
Bottom Line:Great fit/Poor construction.

There is nothing wrong with the materials used to make these pads but the stitching is terrible. There is only one thread of stitching that holds both the plastic, foam and, straps together. ONE LINE. That means if you break that one thread(likely) the entire pad will eventually fall apart. There is no exuse for such poor contruction.
There ought to be at least two lines of stiching. The straps and the strap loops ought to go all the way around and front be one piece, and it should be cross stiched to the rest of the molding to avoid pull out.

The straps in my pads fell out after 1 week of use. Then the replacement pads stiching fell out again after 1 week.

I really want to like these pads because they fit really well, but they have such poor construction it is unexcuseable. Hopefully they will fix this.

After my most recent big crash on rocks, I got up immediately and no injury except some scuffs on the hardshell. Otherwise, my knee and shin would've taken the beating. Some pipe insulation and zip ties covered the offending hose guide, but two buckles for the velcro straps ripped out on subsequent rides. An inspection of the thread used for the pads reveals that it is more appropriately suited to ladies undergarments than body armour. It should be noted that the pads are labeled Race Face. I ordered Roach and they are identical to my friends Roach pads in all respects. It appears that Race Face is now labeling the product.

Purchased At:Universal Cycles
Strengths:Comes in enough sizes to fit tall and short people.
Slips less than any other shin guard.
Enough padding to be comfortable and pedal well.
It's not all black, which gets hot as hell in the sun.
Protects the side of the knee.
Weaknesses:The new Fox 911 shin guards have a better strapping system (though the pads aren't nearly as good).
Padding is too soft: I whacked a knee on a rock and my kneecap hit the shell.
You might think they fit badly until you figure out that there *is* a left and a right, and you have them on backwards.
Similar Products Used:The new Fox 911 (great strapping system, but weak, flexy shell and not enough padding)
661 (weak, wouldn't stay on)
Fox Ventilators (totally worthless, knee cups flap around and do nothing)
Bike Setup:Weyless 67, Flick+, Dual Duty wheels. Heavy as hell but unbreakable.
Bottom Line:They're comfortable, you can pedal in them, and they're burly enough to take hard rock impacts.
My only suggestions are to make the padding firmer around the knee (as it's easy to blow through it and get a bruise from the shell), to mark left and right pads, and maybe to do the top straps diagonally like the new Fox guards.

They're still the best knee/shin guards out there right now, and are worth the extra $20 over the cheaper kind the first time you backspin a pedal into your shin or endo onto a rock.

Strengths:fit my shins perfect
Weaknesses:- don't come with a sticker
- there is very very slight movement above the knee if you bend as far as you can go.
- wasn't to impressed with the way the bottom of the shin pad was cut around the edges. The knee pad has a nice moulded formed look around the whole thing and the bottom of the shin is just trimmed off with what appears to be roughly done with a pair of tin snips. Lack of attention to detail IMHO.
- only comes in grey (but it's growing on me)
Similar Products Used:661 Race oh wait it says similiar products.....
Bottom Line:I am a newbie when it comes to pads and biking but I must say I am impressed. After going over my handlebars twice last week and 2 wipeouts hitting my knee / shins I decided on some leg pads. I feel like they are a little overkill for me but who cares :)

I tried on a few different brands and I bought a pair of 661 race pads. Hey they were cheaper (and not as grey). I took them home and wore them around the house for like 2 hours to test out before I decided to keep. They just didn't seem right and I couldn't shake all the reviews of these pads so I broke and went and spent a whole $20 more. (sarcasm)

The difference is insane, what everyone else says is true. I am surprised they don't put the other pad companies out of business since they are substantially better and not that much more money.

Very impressed they fit so well they can be used for many other things aside from biking, like walking, swimming and they even make excellent pyjamas. Super comfortable and feel like you can trust them. Now it's time for me to go wipe out and let you know how I make out...

Strengths:Excellent protection and coverage – never felt a thing during crashes and no longer get bruises around the knees and shins from the bike frame or pedals
Comfortable and doesn't move in a crash, slide or rub while pedaling
Weaknesses:None.
Similar Products Used:None. This was my first leg armor purchase.
Bike Setup:Santa Cruz Superlight
Bottom Line:This is my first set of leg pads so it took a few rides to get comfortable wearing them. Now I don't even notice they’re on after the first few minutes. The added confidence I have while wearing these pads has resulted higher speeds and doing bigger stunts.

Can get hot while climbing on a warm day, but I did wear them for the entire Gooseberry Mesa ride on a 90°F day.

I’m 5’9” with skinny legs and got the medium, which fits great with full coverage down to the top of my shoe.

The bottom line is these pads have been great. They have stayed in place through crashes on dirt, rocks, tree branches and I received no cuts, scrapes or bruises. The scrapes and gouges in the plastic is skin and blood not lost. I like these pads and would buy them again.

Bike Setup:Ellsworth Joker - 6" Sherman Breakout, Romic Shock (7"), Kenda Blue Groove 2.35, Huegi Freeride hubs, Time Z pedals, etc. 32.5 lb Freeride set up
Bottom Line:I did a lot of research reading mtbr reviews, mountainbike mags, talking to people, etc. The general consensus was that Roach Knee/Shin guards were the best. Guess what? They're right. These things snug up like a glove and don't move. I've ridden then on several solid rides recently in Moab like Procupine Rim, Slickrock, etc. and after 3 hours of hard pedaling and bouncing around, they're right where I put them - never had to pull them up once. I'm 5' 8", 140 lbs and have skinney legs. The medium fits me fine.

I had wondered if the pads would constrict my pedal stroke, but I barely notice them. These pads don't have a "sleeve" above the knee - they have two elastic straps, and on the climbs, I just attach them very loosely (then crank them down when you get to the top).

With the temperature at about 70-75 fahrenheit, the pads added a little warmth, but it really wasn't anything to be concerned about - even on the long climbs.

Bottom line is, you buy these things for protection. While on a furious single track descent with obstacles coming at me very fast, something whacked my right shin REALLY hard. It put a little scratch on the plastic and I didn't even get a bruise. I also have the Roach Rally FR elbow pads, and when I got back from a ride, I noticed one of them had a really big scratch mark on the forearm plate - I don't even remember hitting anything. Scratches on plastic good - contusions and lacerations on skin not as good. Roach Rally FR armor very good.

Strengths:These pads are light, not too hot, stay in place, strong, and protect you from the worst debris. I've plowed through areas with nothing but thick brush and trees, and my legs were perfectly fine, I had no arm armour so that was a little painful..
Weaknesses:There's a few holes in the soft padding on the edges, but that's what the pads are supposed to take instead of your legs, so it's not really a weakness.
Bottom Line:These pads are as good as they get. The shell is super strong, once you strap in they don't go anywhere, they're not too hot either. I've ridden in 30 degree temperatures (celcius) and they weren't uncomfortable, I didn't even know they were there.

Weaknesses:None so far.
Bottom Line:These pads are just perfect. I spend a lot more time going uphill then downhill, but when I go downhill, I want to go where I want, not where it's safe... So I was sceptical about buying leg armor, because of the long, long uphill section. But after two of my friends had serious accident in mtb, I decided to protect myself a bit more...

These pads are just perfect (did I already say that?). I forget about them when I go uphill but I thank god I have them when I go downhill. I have tried them on when it was really hot an humid and I was still able to forget about them (the open back is great). If you're not only doing downhill, stop looking around, they are just perfect!

Strengths:They fit me well; they aren't as hot as full wraps, more protection than the neoprene-only types.
Similar Products Used:Briefly tried a pair of Rock Garden shin guards (the full-wrap neoprene style that a lot of brands make). I couldn't fit them well (I'm skinny) and they are quite hot (typical of that style). Other than those these Roach pads are my first set.
Bike Setup:Modified FSR
Bottom Line:Seem excellent to me. Fit was an issue for me cause i've got skinny legs (see above). I think the whole body height issue by which most makers size their leg guards is over-rated (or should at least be only one of several factors you use to size these things). Email or talk to the makers because most bike shops don't carry much selection, a lot of the sales people don't know jack about this stuff (roadies), and don't return special order stuff. Roach gave me good advice on fitting: size Large for my height (5'- 10") or down size to Medium for skinny legs. I went Medium and have plenty of coverage all the way down to my shoes and the straps aren't too loose for my legs.
In terms of performance they have worked fine for me. I find I usually wrap the top set of straps below the knee caps (twist one strap over to reverse the Velcro) for less constriction above the knee when travelling between dicey sections of trail. Then if you want full metal jacket you can cinch the straps above the knee cap.

Bottom Line:Being tall (6'4) i wasn't really sure i could find knee/shin guards that would fit my lanky body well. Looked at the Rally FR's and ordered a XL pair and they turned out to be close to perfect. Not too hot, as long as you have a bit of air moving past them. the ventilation isn't great when you're standing still but you probably should be riding in them, not walking.
The plastic shell extends well round both sides of your knee which is great if you bang the inside of your knees on rocks and they don't catch on your frame either. the padding inside cushions solid impacts fairly well too.
Overall for the money the Rally FR's are the best guard i could find on the market. I love mine as they've saved my legs from looking like raw meat many times and that's all i could ask from them.
