Strengths:Light weight. Not too hot.
Weaknesses:Total junk for knee and shin protection. I had a good wipe out and my knee got tore up because these slipped down.
Similar Products Used:None
Bike Setup:Nomad
Bottom Line:I am getting some real protection for my legs. I do not do any big jumps or hucks but for some kind of protection these are No good.
These are no good if you want protection. Save your legs and money, get something else.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $15.00
Purchased At:Alex's Bike Pro Shop
Strengths:Strengths ? Protects my shins, solid plastic shells, good velcro grip, cool looking
Weaknesses:Hot....but I guess everything in Florida is going to be hot
Similar Products Used:None, 1st pair of pads
Bike Setup:Trek 4300 stock......for now
Bottom Line:Bottom Line? After taking one of many diggers and gashing the tihs out of my shin I figured $15 was worth it, so far so good. Saved my shins and knees MORE than once! Seem to stay put, I have some meaty calves...although if you are more than 5'10" or just have long legs you may find them a bit on the short side. I'm 5'9" and they stop about 2" short of my foot. The black and red color scheme looks cool. I would by these again. Dont think they can be beat for the price. If you are looking for affordable protection and you're not 6' tall these are your pads.
5 hot ones for value but only 4 for overall as I've only had them a month & 1/2, longevity remains to be seen

I cut the forward stitching slightly so they bent better and they r awesome. Anyone that can be bothered to make these adjustments should. I hav a small size but this is fine b'coz i use clips.

Strengths:Provides great shin protection, softly padded and a low price.
Weaknesses:Heats up shins causing sweating and slips a bit.
Similar Products Used:Never used any before.
Bike Setup:2001 Trek Fuel 90 Disk, 1996 GT Ricochet.
Bottom Line:I purchased these online after a fall without them.
I was out of action for one week while my shin healed.
Also I opted to cut the two cloth straps used as knee hinges and removed the knee cups with padding.
So I use them as shin pads only.
Bottom line: Does a great job, too bad I didn't have them one week earlier. Better to have a scratch on the hard plastic then wait one week till skin heals.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $25.00
Purchased At:Local Austin Bike Shop
Strengths:Cheap. Good "starter" pads. Better than going bare legged.
Weaknesses:Lack of top knee strap. Misleading to MTB'ers who are in the market for trail protection.
Bottom Line:Well, this set of pads is obviously not designed for MTB'ers. I think we're all aware of that. The problem I have is they are sold in MTB bike shops. If they are in fact used for Motocross... why market them to MTB riders? Well... I knew going in that these weren't going to be the most secure pads in the world but that's not why I bought 'em.

There is only ONE REASON (no not because they're cheap)...

CLIPLESS PEDAL TRAINING!!!

I bought these pads because I was learning to use my clipless pedals and knew I would be taking a lot of low speed "tip-over" spills. The pads didn't do the greatest job because they did tend to slip when I landed on the side of my knees. I attribute that to the lack of a "wrap-around" pad on the knee. It did save the impact bruising though. Again... LOW SPEED SPILLS. I can't even put my approval on these suckers for downhillers or extreme MTB'ing.

They did the job for me and got me comfortable on my clipless pedals and I even let my wife use them when she was learning to use hers. So... for the price these suckers are great. On the side of performance... I'm about in the middle with them because they did work ok for "shorts" riding but I don't like the fact they're marketed to mountain bike riders in their stores if they're not designed for us at all. So I'm gonna have to side with all the people who are upset with the quality and think it's totally wrong to call them stupid or "deserving" of their injuries. Geez... is that what our community of riders has come to. Bashing each other because some people's opinion on a product doesn't match yours. I guess in the end we all just need to get out there and ride.

buy if you want to end up with stiches
you see.. the problem with this guard is that whenever you fall (or even move) it falls to the bottom of your leg and leave your knee and upper part of your shin with no protection at all (and these are the parts that the pedal hits)
stiches cost more then better guards
DONT BUY!!!!

For 10 bucks they saved me a lot of bruises and abrasions--Went down 3 times today, no problems. Knees had taken a beating without them. I'm going to jury rig some elastic for the knee cup though. I have relatively solid calfs, so no problem at all with slippage.

Strengths:Cheap, Comfortable fit!
Weaknesses:Min. Protection, The knee pads flaps around, cheap (quality and price)!

Similar Products Used:Protec Knee pads, and numerous others that I forgot the names of?
Bike Setup:Specialized Enduro Pro
Bottom Line:YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! This is very min. on protection and the knee pad part don't stay in place. They are very comfortable fit though! Definately not for use on aggressive types of ride or downhills. But I don't do the crazy stuffs like bombing downhill at jet speed so I don't need all that much protections. Only from those occasional cuts and bruises from the open dirt fireroads. I will eventually upgrade to the Core Rat shin/knee pads because I am starting to tackle the more technical terrains.

So if you are a beginner MTBer or a guy just getting into the aggressive types of riding like me, this product is a good place to start! 5 Chillis for Value and 3 chillis overall!

Strengths:Inexpensive, they prevent the pedal-to-shin pain.
Weaknesses:The plastic was a real letdown, I cracked the kneecap on a decent stack.
Bottom Line:Judging by the scathing comments on the earlier version, Fox must have done some thinking before releasing the 2003 guards. They don't slip and they have saved me a lot of pain. If you are regularly called a psycho or idiot by your friends just because you ride like one, shin armour will reduce your scar collection considerably.

Strengths:They will work well under pants w/ big boots
Weaknesses:Not for MTB use
Bike Setup:Kona Bear
Bottom Line:Yea...not what I thought they would be. Under pants they work, if they dont fall down, but since they're evidently designed for MX, they would sit fine on top of your big ole' boots. Don't buy them if you want some padding for MTB, they will slip and fall down, unless of course your going to bang your ankle; then they will be on your knee.

Since this is Mountain Bike Review, and not MX Review, I give a 4 for value (hey, $12!), but a 2 for overall, because they dont work for a MTB!

Bottom Line:Anyone who complains about these pads slipping down or flopping around is a dumbass who deserves all the pain he manages to inflict on himself. These were not designed to ever end up on the leg of a mountain biker in shorts. They go under mx BOOTS you dummies! They happen to work well under mx pants, or even jeans, but don't use them with shorts and blame the product for your injuries. That's like blaming a helmet manufacturer because you poked yourself in the eye. What's more, they aren't supposed to cushion anythying, just deflect the cutting effect of a MX footpeg on your shin and knee. Stop whining, stop being cheap-asses, and go buy the right pads for the job.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $16.00
Purchased At:Fox Racing
Strengths:light, cheap, breathable (open in back), comfortable
Weaknesses:not super secure or super tough; need to sew on strap to keep knee pads in place
Similar Products Used:Roach leg armor
Bike Setup:4: RM6, Intense Tracer, Trek Fuel, and a hardtail
Bottom Line:I had to post, because I'm laughing hard to myself here. Sorry, guys, I know some of you got hurt, but it is likely you'd get your injuries regardless of what protection you were using. (And many of you probably hurt yourselves not wearing any protection, before you decided to buy these.)
It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out these "guards" are not made super tough, don't offer full protection and aren't particularly secure. I think Fox never implies they will offer "extreme" protection for freeriders or downhillers. You get what you pay for and these primarily were designed for motocrossers and bikers to wear beneath moto-style pants, where the movement issue would be minmized, as lightweight, expensive protection.
Reading Pancho's review down below, I can't believe anyone "dropping from a railing to a curb" can blame these pads for their visit to the ER! He even has the nerve to say the pads were slipping down his knee before. What an idiot! And why was he riding so his knee was always hitting the headset? I guess that's called "trials" riding?
Freeriding or downhilling means taking chances and us riders have to make the best decisions possible in terms of pushing our limits, and that includes evaluating the protection equipment we choose. You are not supposed to just buy something and assume it makes you invincible. Jeez! You have to determine for yourself how you ride and whether you'll be protected. It's our own responsibility.
Now, given the construction of these knee/shin guards, it was obvious to me they would only offer a certain level of protection. That is the trade off for being light, cheap and comfortable. I would say they are most appropriate for rough or extreme cross-country and you're taking your chances using for downhill. If you want better protection, you're going have to pay a lot more than 20 clams!

Bottom Line:When I see products like this I feel ashamed of both the manufacturer of the item, and the fools that sell them. Obviously these knee/shin guards are bought by people and never sent back because it costs as much to ship back as it did to buy them...and so Fox keeps producing them. Despite, I'm sending these ridiculous pieces of plastic back to the cr@phole from whence they came, just to spite the b@stards at Fox who would peddle these off as usable. Bottom Line:These things save my shin from some serious injurys a day ago. I slipped off my nashbar platforms and hit my shin. The pegs on the pedals cut into my plastic covering of the pads. I had to take off the pads and leave them on the pedal still stuck in and rip them off. They saved me from not being out for the rest of the season with destroyed shins. Now i ride with them everywhere just for the shin protection. I doesnt do anything for knee unless u wore them under tight pants. Now im getting the Roach DH leg pads to protect my knees but these fox are a great deal. Just modify it with some knee straps and it should work fine. RIDE HARD.

Strengths:Cheap, light, do what they're supposed to do
Weaknesses:Misunderstood usage
Bike Setup:DH
Bottom Line:The reason the knee cups flop around is because these pads are intended to be under-the-pants. The reviewer below mistakenly reviewed the Fox 911 pads. Everyone else appears to be using them with shorts. In that case, yes, they can be annoying. I ride them with shorts myself. Here's a tip: Take an old pair of tights that have a hole in the crotch (c'mon, we've all got a pair). Cut off the bottoms a little above the ankle. Cut off the tops so that you're left with a what appears to be a sexy pair of hot-pants. Uuhh... throw that part away (or keep it for later). What you're left with is a 12 or 13 inch section of lycra. Slide one on each leg, strap on your $16 Fox pads like usual, and (here's the tricky part) TAPE the knee cup around your leg using cloth athletic tape. Don't cut off your circulation, now. Just secure 'em really well. Tape should be sticking to the lycra--not your skin. The knee cups will not flop and movement should not be impaired. This is the set-up I use and I can hammer through rock gardens without any slippage.
An even slicker approach would be to find some cheap light leg warmers with the little rubber grippies on the top and bottom. If you want to abandon the lycra "underwear" approach, attach your tape to the knee cup, twist the tape around (so it sticks to itself), wrap around your leg (stop twisting here), tear-off and stick the end back to the knee cup. If you're wearing some cool moto shorts, you won't even see the tape.
OK, so it's not Dianese or Azonic. But for $16 to $20, what do you want? Works for me.

Bottom Line:I don't know how the retail price of these is $20 bucks if in the catalog they're $55 and in the shop I got them at (Trailblazer's, a fairly good shop, bad staff) they're $86 Canadian (which works out to about $59 US). Maybe I'm reviewin' the wrong product here. No, I'm not.
Anyhow, back to the pads. These are garbage. The pads constantly rode all the way down to my ankles after about 5 pedal strokes, and the same happens to my friend. I even tried leaving the ankle zipper open, which actually helped a little bit in keeping them up. I would never recommend these pads to anyone, and I am surprised that they got such a high rating (3.33)! These are trash! Shame on Fox for making such a sh*tty product. Don't buy these! Save your money! Buy some Azonic pads!
Luckily I returned the pads for store credit, but don't take the risk, buy Azonic.

Bottom Line:These are alright in slower crashes but anything else they suck ive split both knee cap covers and i still managed to get 6 stiches in my knee while wearing them But when you look at some prices of other stuff and then you look at these there way cheaper and i suppose they worth the money
but if you really want to save your knees go for something better

Strengths:
Cheap. Shin guard protects great. Lightweight and not too hot.
Weaknesses:
Knee pad section is of dubious protective value. Made in China.

These are the first one's I've tried. I got 'em cause they're cheap as hell.
Bike Setup:
98 K2 Animal freeride frameset, 5 front/rear. Deore/LX/XT drivetrain w/GripShift Plasma shifters. RhynoLites.
Bottom Line:Pretty dope for 20 bucks. The shin part is great, but the knee pad kinda flaps around. It protected me fine in the few slower crashes I've had, but I suspect that the knee section might not help much during a higher speed, Superman-style crash. But I haven't any problems with them so far, and they have saved my knees from my stem and fork clamps, so I'm satisfied so far. Interstingly, these same pads are marketed under the Azonic and O'Neal brandnames. The Azonic ones list for $18 at azonicusa.com, but the SAME EXACT pads list for $10 at oneal.com... milking the DH coolness factor for all its worth?
