Strengths:good protection, very durable.
Weaknesses:when they get sweaty, they start to slide down. you end up adjusting them more than you should. the straps come off easily also.
Similar Products Used:six six one race
Bike Setup:giant dh w/ all the goodies
Bottom Line:if you sweat, dont get them. they slide down every 10 minutes. invest your money in the roach ralleys or the six six one races (my personal choice). the 911s provide great protection and have probably saved me alot of stitches, but they slide down too much and the straps come undone waaay too easily.

Strengths:This is a review for the new 2003 model pad. There are 3 generations of Fox 911 knee/shin models floating around out there.
The oldest one has a sock pull over lycra makeup and is absolute crap.
The one in the pic here at the top, the '01 is pretty good, offers great protection, but it tends to slip down over your knee, leaving the top of your knees exposed. Mind you every top selling pad on the market right now suffers from this same problem .
The newest model is the best shin/knee guard on the market. It is the only one that stays up, offering excellent consistent protection for your entire knee. It also is not too hot.
Weaknesses:The top strap velcro, above the knee and behind your leg, has a tendancy to roll under, chafing the back of your knee.
Similar Products Used:New Roach Rally DH- An incredibly high quality pad. The quality blows away anything else on the market. The pad has ridges on the inside which keep the padding away from your legs and helps keep you cool. Soft comfortable construction and incredible protection with well placed thick wrap around pads and a well designed hard outer shell. Wade Simmons helped design it, so I guess it only figures that the best rider in the world would come up with a good product.
Bottom Line:The latest model of the 911 is the best pad you can buy right now. If Fox incorporates the kind of attention to detail and comfort that Roach's new pad has, especially the inside ridges keeping the pad away from you skin and the use of comfortable materials, we will have achieved perfection in pad design.

Strengths:Fit, comfort, stay put in pretty big accidents!
Weaknesses:None
Similar Products Used:Tried some Dianese, but they just don't fit tightly enough.
Bottom Line:Of all the pads I tried the 911's fitted best. I thought they might be a bit hot for all day riding, but in the end I wore them all the time in the Alps. Even on a 60km cross country ride with temperatures in the mid 30's they didn't get too uncomfortable.

I bought these specifically for a trip to the Alps and they saved me from serious indjury on the first corner of the first run! Most of our party used Dianese, but to me it didn't fit as well and moved about way too much when you crashed... witness one of our party ending up with 5 stiches in his knee after his Dianese slipped down his leg.

I'm 6'4", 200lbs, and the L/XL fitted perfectly.

Purchased At:Franklin Street Cycles
Strengths:They Look Good
Weaknesses:The pads seem to work well at first, however they slip down over your knee as you ride with them. I had a big fall with them, flying into the trees, now after a trip to the emergency room and 25 stitches I am stuck in front of this computer for 3 weeks
Similar Products Used:I am trying out some Core Rat Pads next, they look more promising
Bike Setup:Surly Instigator, Manitou X Vert R tripple clamp, Azonic Shorty Stem, V brakes, Mavic 521 Rims, Race Face North Shore Cranks, flat pedals
Bottom Line:Fox pads seem like they would work, but slide down off your knee too easily. They don't offer enough protection. I went over my bars at 20 mph, flew into an overgrown brush pile, felt ok, pulled my pads back up, as usual since they allways slide down, rode a while until I saw blood flowing out. I pulled off the pads only to reveal a 1 inch deep gash, under my pad, in my knee, just as low as the pads tend to be pulled when I ride. The 9 mile ride out sucked, I will save my fox pads for friends who want to wear them dirt jumping, where they can readjust the damn things every run.

Bottom Line:When i first bought them i thought they were the bomb, not only they looked so good they fited really well too... however my opinon about my new investment changed rapidly after a couple falls i noticed that not only the knee cup was split in half but my knees where yet again full of blood.. In a fall they did help to take the first impact but slipped right off after a small wrestle with the rocks..
so I actully don't recommend these knee/shin guards as they only behave like shin guards and not like a combo.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $70.00
Purchased At:Cycle Loft, Burlington MA
Strengths:these pads are awesome
Weaknesses:none
Bike Setup:Kona Stinky Primo & Specialized M4 hardtail
Bottom Line:I've been wearing the pads for a year, freeriding and XC three or four times a week in Eastern Mass. The things are pretty well worn out now, but that's to be expected (anyone been to Lynn Woods?).

I've given these things an absolute hiding and they've saved my skin every time. I used to have scabby legs almost year round – not with these puppies on! The only downside is that turn one into a no-fear lunatic, and that can be worse for you health than no pads! I haven't lost any skin for a year but I have got a really sore ACL, destroyed hip flexors and a creaky neck right now.

To the guy who complained that they keep slipping down his leg: The trick is in the Velcro fasteners. Specifically, how tight you pull them and the order in which you tighten them. The strap immediately below the knee needs to be tightened first and should be pulled as tight as you can get it. The other straps (especially the bottom two) should not be pulled tight, rather, simply lain over snugly.

The top and bottom parts of your lower leg are cone shaped (unless you are a freak or a really really fat fucl). If you pull a strap tightly around a cone, the strap is forced towards the narrow end. Tightening the top strap (the strap just below the knee) forces the pads up, tightening the bottom straps forces the pads down. It took me a week or two to work it out and it really works (unless you don’t have calf muscles!).

A few months back i flew over the bars, through a bush and hit a rock i didn't see and 'snap' the knee pad broke in two. I weight 225 and it was a really hard hit. It was a good thing i was wearing these pads or my knee cap would have shaddered. Anyway i took the pads back and they replaced them for free(sweet). I think there great.

Strengths:no chaffing, full leg protection, good sweat absobtion
Weaknesses:sweat a lot, slides down
Bottom Line:good protection but covering the whole leg with wet suit like material gets them drentched on hot days. didn't bother me too much, except that the velcro patches are kid of small and I too couldn't get the top strap tight enough to keep 'em from slipping. my knee is too small for the large, but I can barely get the middle strap around my calf.

gonna try adding padding to knee and extra velcro.

i guess these are good for people with uniform knee/calf diameters that do short, technical downhill (unless you live somewhere that doesn't get too hot/humid.

Bottom Line:This is a very good product in my opinion. I can see how the other reviewers might complain about slippage, but I think that it comes down to buying the right size for your legs. I'm not a big guy, but did try on the different sizes to be sure I got the right ones. I'm mostly a free-rider and do a lot of pedaling ~ they slip just a tad after a long uphill climb, but pretty much stay in place without me having to constantly adjust them. The lycra is very easy on the skin also.. and breathes fairly well. I recommend these pads. Just be sure to order the right size ~ you chicken legged dudes should probably go with a strap system that is less size dependant.

I've been riding this product for about a month, but riding every day. I am more a Freerider and ride alot of bridgedrops and cliffs. At first they do move around but if you actually tighten the shin straps they really don't move that much. Of course if you have them on loose, they are going to move. Bottom Line:this isnt rocket science boys and girls. you put the top strap as tight as you can without cutting off circulation. then you do the same with the first one below the knee. the next strap is done up fairly loose. and the last one, nearest to your ankle is just done up so the straps arent flapping around, but totally loose. follow these simple instructions and these pads should stay in place. unless you bought pads that dont fit. not pad is going to stay perfectly in place unless you decide to use some epoxy and glue them to your legs, but if you follow these instuctions the fox 911 pads do stay in place and you can all quit whining. i like these pads more than roach. they seem to offer more range of movement. i havent had any crazy, these pads saved my life, type crashes yet, but they have saved me some skin thus far. i would recommend these pads to anyone, i think they are great. they work good with my roach arm pads.

Strengths:does help a lot during a fall if they are still in place by the time you do go down. light and flexible
Weaknesses:dont stay in place for more than 10 min at a rime without having to be puled up/twisted back into place. hot in the summer. fall apart in no time
Bike Setup:trek VRX with mrp, DH tires
Bottom Line:i've had these for a while now, and use them for lack of better options, but they have just about fallen apart. i would recommend looking elsewhere for DH protection, i plan to try dainese.

Price Paid: $40.00
Purchased At:Mail Order
Strengths:While there really isn't one, If you wear these under tights, you can get them to stay in place, somewhat. The lower plates are fairly comfortable
Weaknesses:Like everyone here that wears these things on rough runs knows, they slip, rotate, and don't even provide all that much protection. Constant slipping means stopping to fool with them or have them be both uncomfortable and useless as protection
Similar Products Used:Core Rat.
Bike Setup:Uzzi DH.
Bottom Line:I've tried to use these freeriding and even XC. They're a poorly designed product. I sent Fox a letter asking them how they could have designed them, realized they didn't perform, yet sold, and continue to sell them. No response from them. I thought Fox took pride in their products. Let me add the bottom line of: there are much better products out there.

Price Paid: $50.00
Purchased At:local shop
Strengths:keep legs warm during cold rides
Weaknesses:slide below the knee whenever the trail gets choppy (which is exactly when they should stay put) dont go far down enough on the shin... allowing just enough space to be hit with sticks kicked up from the trail
Similar Products Used:none
Bike Setup:mod. fisher paragon
Bottom Line:dont waste your money. whoever designed these pads should be shot, or worse, be forced to wear these pads on the trail.

i just had to order a pair of roach DH leg armor pads, which should hold up much better... if you see these things in your local bike shop... regardless of what the shop guy says. don't buy em. you'll be sorry if you do!

2 chilis for keeping my legs warm, they should get no chilis, but i'm in a good mood.

Favorite Trail:Tiger Mountain / St. Eds
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $40.00
Purchased At:Downhill Zone
Strengths:Winter coming on, in Seattle lots o' cold. Fifty percent of this armors strength is that it's also a leg warmer. No compromise in pedalling. Snug fit.
Weaknesses:Knee cup moves around a lot. No matter what, you're gonna have to keep pulling these things up.
Similar Products Used:None.
Bike Setup:K2 Disco Monkey.
Bottom Line:Got a deal by getting some other stuff, too. Wouldn't spend more than $40. Liked the added security over the wet roots. Did take a couple of diggers and was surprised at the lack of scrapes at the end of the ride. Never thought you'd need to keep your legs warm riding at night, but found that these really helped with endurance. Bottom line...people get out of your way when they see someone bombing covered in armor.

Bike Setup:K2 Flyin' Monkey
Bottom Line:These pads fit like a pair of leg warmers. They are comfortable except for the fact that it is summer right now and they don't ventilate as well as strap on pads. Whether they will stand up to a really hard crash or not remains to be seen, so they get a good review for now. They have saved my legs a couple of times so far, so they can't be that bad. If you have a problem with the velcro straps staying in place on your pads, these offer a pretty good alternative.

Strengths:Keep legs warm on cold mornings
Weaknesses:Poor quality / durability

The zip broke on one the first day.

Weaknesses:crappy elastic
just doesn't stay on my knees or shins
Similar Products Used:2nd skin shin guards
dainese shin guards
Bike Setup:Kona Roast '00 with Hayes discs
Bottom Line:this could be a quality piece of armour if a little more thought went into its design. it just won't stay put and keeps moving around on my legs, which makes it useless. the elastic also went in one of them the first time I used them.
The Dainese are a little bit more expensive, but the fox ones just don't work.

Favorite Trail:Sweet Street
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:Light, very, very good protection, looks excellent, not too hot.
Weaknesses:They don't stay on very well, need constant adjustment
Similar Products Used:Sugoi soft shin/knee (stay on better but suck everywhere else)
Bike Setup:Long Travel urban assault machine
Bottom Line:These pads are nice! They look good, they are EXTREMELY EFFECTIVE at preventing pedal-induced bleeding, and ventilation is surprisingly good. You can literally beat your shins with a baseball bat and feel nothing. The zipper makes them easy to put on. Padding material is sealed away from lycra layer, so it doesn't get soaked with sweat (like some soft pads). The only problem encountered is the cheesy elastic grippers that do nothing. It's pretty annoying having to adjust your pads every 10 minutes, but at least they are comfortable to wear unlike other ones that restrict pedaling etc. Also, I got mine for like $30 so I guess ya can't beat the price.

Date Reviewed: October 25, 1998
Bottom Line:
Shh. Don't tell anyone but I'm a terrible XC rider. So I figured
to get the best protection without paying for a new skeleton.
These knee/shin guards are well secured because the lycra
surrounds the leg and keeps the plastic/pad where they should be
unlike straps/velcro.
Fell 6 times (maybe should have used my knobbies instead of semi
-slicks - noted for future reference) including an 'endo' and
plastics/pad absorbed it all.
The only problem may be that if the lycra is ripped the perfectly
good plastic/pad is useless as there are no attachment points -
good for Fox, not so good for the wallet. Maybe the plastic/pad
should have been wider to cover the outside sides of the knee/shin
thus reducing lycra area.
Here in OZ, they're $80, which isn't cheap, but that depends on
whether one goes to work the day after the ride.
is useless.
