Strengths:goodlooking, comfortable
Weaknesses:doesn't do their job, the protection they provide its very small, I had an accident a rock hit the kneeguard and broke tha knee guard and did a cut inside my knee, I cut a tendon and did a big cut in my knee, I really recomend you to use something that will protect from things like that, don't pay atention only in the good looking, pay atention in your protection

Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $80.00
Strengths:Very breathable, doesn't slip around, looks awesome and it's tough, it's taken several big blows and hardly a scratch.
Weaknesses:Price is all I can say. ;) I still think it was worth the 60 euros that I paid for them.
Similar Products Used:Fox Northshore (HORRIBLE! Itchy, hot, hard to put on)
Bike Setup:Specialized Hardrock Sport 2005: Race Face bashring, Deore crankset, Avid Juicy 5s, Doubletracks, etc.
Bottom Line:I'd definately get these guards, they look good, protect well, stay in position and ventilate sooooo well. If you can, try to find them on sale for they're a bit expensive. ;)

Strengths:Good looks. Well ventilated and comfortable.
Weaknesses:These did not last for me at all. I rode about half a season and got rid of them. The velcro didn't last and the mesh stretched out. I got tired really quickly of pulling them back up every five minutes.
Similar Products Used:Roach freeride knee guards

Strengths:Light weight, breathable, and comfortable (year #1)
Weaknesses:After 1 year they started moving around on me and are just not comfortable.
Similar Products Used:Fox
Bike Setup:Soul Cycle Titan (HT) w/ 5" DC fork.
Bottom Line:I liked these pads the first season I had them, and they did save me at least half a dozen times.

Now - Do not stay in place, are a hassel to deal with and generally suck. After this weekends crash I now have 7 staples inmy shin, just below my knee... isn't this what I paid to NOT have happen?!?!?!

Unless you can buy new pads every season... do NOT get these things.

Price Paid: $70.00
Purchased At:Guides Hut
Strengths:O.K. I bought these on a whim after riding all day in +43C heat. The next ride I felt like I had air conditioners on my legs, but that is as far as the good review goes.
Weaknesses:I hate these things. They always fall down!! My legs look like I was stuck in a Malaysian prison camp and caned for 12 hours! The last time I checked the idea behind armour was protection, something these things clearly do not do as they slide down or turn sideways if you slide on your side. I know I am not the only person with this problem as I saw two other riders witht the same pads duct taped to their legs.
Similar Products Used:661 4X4's
Bike Setup:Bullit
Bottom Line:Well I sure look cool in these trendy pieces of crap, until I take them off and see a beautiful array of purples, blues and reds all over my legs. O.k, I can handle when I make a bad purchase but what even stings more than the cuts and bruises on my tattered shins is the blow I took to my wallet!! Way too much money for way too little protection!

Submitted by Token a Downhiller from Seoul, Korea
Date Reviewed: April 27, 2003
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $60.00
Purchased At:somewhere on the goldcoast
Strengths:light and ventilated and velcro straps let you take them off without messing around with taking your shoes off etc.
Weaknesses:pads just don't stay in position.
Bike Setup:Big Hit DH, Monster T's, Deore components. Mobster 2.7 up front, high roller on the rear.
Bottom Line:Someone told me that if you can afford it, buy dainese, but these pads aren't that good. Theys slip continuously, the velcro comes undone and i'm constantly trying to pull the things up whilst speeding down the mountain. They have definitly saved my knees and shins on a number of small hits and falls, but are a total annoyance in the lack of fit. Pedalling and bumps knock these things all over the place...a tree glance will have them facing backwards.

Bottom Line:The bigest problem is everyone here is talking about two different models; the dainese knee guard pro, and the dainese knee guard freestyle. The freestyles are frickin awsome, Where the pro's suck. The freestyles go all the way around your leg, and you dont have to deal with that crappy mesh. Ive tried a million different pads and the dainese freestyle has the best best protection, ventilation, and comfort.

Submitted by Ben a from Canberra, Australia
Date Reviewed: October 16, 2002
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $60.00
Strengths:Comfortable, breathes well (not sure what it will be like when summer hits), now has 3 straps on your calf rather than 2, stays in place, possible protection from snakes???
Weaknesses:Does slip a little but when your legs sweat they seem to stick in place. Makes me more confident = more crashes.
Similar Products Used:Had a look at the fox knee/shins (911?) but I wasn't sure about the ventilation.
Bike Setup:Kona Stinky Dee-lux (2001)
Bottom Line:I was originally just looking for shin guards due to a couple of nasty slips on my platforms in the last 6 months. These caught my eye and fit well. I thought I'd only ride in them every now and then but you barely notice they're there at all so I wear them all the time except for 2 weekends ago when you guessed it, I crashed and skinned my knees.

Bottom Line:Good protection and ventilation. Survived many all day rides in mid summer weather. Until thredbo. When hammeringin and out of the seat, they slipped down my knees, and didn't offer much protection in crashes. at the moment, these are the best pads i've tried, but they need to sit up better on my knees. good but not great.

Bottom Line:These F***in things wont stay up. I washed out 1 time and they peeled off like a bananna (limped for 3 weeks). The strap that holds up the knee and shin guard is far to wimpy. I am sreaming down a hill trying to get these damn things to stay out of the way (probably something else I should be thinking of). I think I will get the full Z-5 jacket and some else for the knees. Date Reviewed: May 9, 2001
Favorite Trail:Forest of Dean, Glos
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $70.00
Purchased At:Leisure Lakes, UK
Strengths:Start by saying there is a difference between the Pro-Air and Freestyle models which Dainese offer. Pro-Air: Stayed in place well, V.light, stayed cool, looked the biz. Freestyle: More robust, better leg coverage, light, stay fairly cool, stay in place, do not chaff knees.
Weaknesses:Pro-Air: Not sure about durability of light weight construction, less coverage than Freestyle, rub knees raw.
Freestyle: Didn't stay in place quite as well as pro-air, but still good.
Similar Products Used:Qranc - Poop, poor coverage and slip down after 3 peddle strokes.
Bike Setup:Planet X JackFlash, Hope disc, Psylos SL fork.
Bottom Line:If you don't take big stacks and don't mind chaffed knees then the pro-air is great, otherwise go for the Freestyle - More robust, no painfull red knees, great protection, stays more or less in place. Expensive but then so is surgery.

Favorite Trail:Shaffer Farms
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $55.00
Purchased At:Cambriabike.com
Strengths:They are the most breathable knee/shin guards out there. They are also very light. Sufficient amount of protection.
Weaknesses:Note: My leg is 15inches around right above the knee and I bought a size Large. Thin leg?
For me they slip down in situations like
a) drops of more than two feet
b) 20 minutes of normal riding
I live on a college campus and these things would slip down just below the knee after jumping off a couple 3ft ledges.
Similar Products Used:Fox 911 = Sucks so hard, worst ever
XTRSKN = good prtection, neoprene makes your leg damn sweaty and they bunch up
Bike Setup:Specialized FSR Enduro Pro, basically stock
Bottom Line:Fox sucks. Dainese is good probably if you have a thick leg. Much lighter an less restrictive than any BMX pads.

I am exchanging the Dainese knee/shin for a lower body bib b/c I think they bib will help to keep the knee/shins up. I really like how they're so breathable. If this fails I'm going for Roach brand knee/shin guards.

You may have seen a lot of the PROs wearing Dainese. That's because they don't usually crash. Dainese isn't for people who are going to repetedly crash hard or people into major downhill.

Favorite Trail:Rainbow mountain
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $50.00
Purchased At:can't remember
Strengths:Stays cool, lightweight, fairly comfortable, good protection
Weaknesses:Quality of stitching, have a tendency to slide down unless you have them uncomfortably tight
Similar Products Used:none
Bike Setup:SC Bullit
Bottom Line:Within a month, the shin straps on both pads broke free due to poor stitching - i got them fixed with some heavy duty stitching at a bag repair place for $4, they've been fine since then. They sometimes slide down you leg on rough decents unless you have them really really tight which can make 'em uncomfortable. Have saved my knees plenty of times though, so pretty happy overall. They fit well under MX pants too, and don't get real hot.

Bottom Line:In one word CRAP ! These have to be the worst product I have purchased in a while. The first day I used them the mesh ripped near the straps on the knee. the always slide down and rub your skin behind the knee. These are garbage. The only thing good about them is that they stay cool. I know that in a hard crash they wil slide down and expose your knee.

Date Reviewed: October 7, 2000
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $50.00
Strengths:Very impressive looks. Made well. Strong Materials.
Weaknesses:Inside material rubs flesh raw. The straps are in poor locations and the pads slip down (knee cups hurt knee caps when this occurs. I think they designed these pads with circus midgets and dwarfs in mind. I'm 6'1" and the large knee pads fit better on my arms than the elbow pads do. They only work if I stand still with out any leg movement.
Similar Products Used:Fox 911 (joke of a product!), Skinz Convertable (most comfortable and well designed, but very hot)
Bottom Line:As much as you get F#@*ed! on the high prices and return policies in the bicycle world, I would say to make sure these pads fit and feel as comfortable as you would like before purchasing them. If there is any doubt in your mind about their comfort, search elsewhere. I'm stuck with mine and cannot return them because I've worn them. Fifty bucks is a nice chunk of bills for something I can't use. By the way I purchased the elbow pads along with and all the above applies for them also. (Another $50 to sit and look at. Hey, Maybe they make great dog toys!) So their you go, another $100 dollars gone to the idiots. Think I'd be better off going to Vegas.

Bottom Line:I thought these were supposed to protect your knees not turn them red. A previous post says to angle the straps, I havent tried that yet but I have a feeling that these will remain in my gear bag for a long time. Had them on for about five miles and couldn't take anymore, my knees turned bright red from chaffing. My observation is based on wearing them directly on your skin, which I think is how they were designed. For what they cost I would expect something better. I bought a set of Lizard skins to use until I recieved these, I will be going back though. I also own the Dainese jacket, which is a very quality product, thats why I went with these. My suggestion is to look somewhere else....
