Poor freehub design.

It failed after only three weeks of trail riding as the freehub mechanism broke. I could actually hear it break as I hit the pedals; it started making bad noises and the freehub body developed a lot of play. You could move the largest sprocket by 3-4 mm when pushing it back and forth.

Waiting for the freehub to be replaced by the dealer. I'll post another review if the next one works just as bad.

The main feature of Shimano XT components is that they are solid. They're not light, they don't perform remarkably well, and they aren't incredibly cheap. But they are reliable, at least they're supposed to be. This hub has been nothing but trouble for me from day one. Broken freehub body, bent axle, another broken freehub, play that keeps coming back. This hub is a piece of junk. As such, I'm throwing it in the garbage and replacing it with a DT Swiss 240. If Shimano wants to put their XT logo on cheap crap like this hub, then I'm going to buy my parts from someone else.

It is light (410g), spins very smoothly, and have a very pro look. all for a good price

The strenght of the cones, and axle are weak

This hub at first is sweet because is not expensive and light.
But after 6 months it became stoked and started to produce a lot of drag.
It took me like 20 minutes hitting with a hammer to un-assmble the broken hub just to find that the trheads in the alloy axle were stripped and the cones where broken in half as the steel balls where cracked.
Also the cricket mechanism is broken

This hub is not reliable at all. Don't get caught by its lightness and low price, because this hub wont last more than a season.

Shimano needs to step foward with they new hub line.

It's Shimano, which was always reliable. Good new averall design.

Bad design of freehub body (it has broke). Kind of dangerous when you ride fast on the trail.

Usually Shimano doesn't issue products wich weren't properly tested. But started with XTR 2007 this company stubbornly makes this faulty quick engagement freehub (36 engagement points). Is something is going wrong with this company?
My sample broke after 500 km of light cross country (one of the 4 pawls broke and blocked the freewheel).
And my accident is not an exclusion.
If you need Shimano rear hub - buy previous models (up to XT 965)

Cheap

Cassette quality - cassette blew up after 2 rides, and on this model it is not replaceable, so I had to get a new hub. Needless to say I didn't replace it with another shimano...

These new XT hubs seem attractive if you're building up a wheelset because they are cheap, but I guess there is a reason why they cost so much less than other hubs. After 2 rides, the cassette internals broke. And you can't replace the cassettes on these, so it needed a new hub.
