Efficiency was the key principle when designing the XTR M980 10-speed rear derailleur. The derailleur was designed with Shimano's Shadow technology, using a longer swing arm and a tighter spring for crisper shifting when you want it, and less 'ghost shifting' when you don't.
Strengths: Beautifully made and shifts like a dream...
Weaknesses: None so far...
I was rebuilding my friend's drive train and he wanted a 34 tooth large
cassette gear. His old XT derailleur just couldn't it handle so, I installed
this little beauty which I had purchased from my LBS during a fire sale
(literally) a couple of years ago. Super easy to install and snapped off
perfect shifts every time. Needless to say he's happy. Just hope he
doesn't whack the carbon cage on a rock though...
The pulley bearings (or bushings?) on my rear der. are squealing and binding after a good work out. I recently dripped a little lube down on them which loosened them up and quieted them down. But now, on my next ride, they are binding and squealing again. The der. has about 300 miles on it.

Darn, I just bought this XTR Der. to upgrade from the '07 XT M716 and sure enough with my good luck, it doesn't fit on my Banshee Morphine.
Seems that the der. drop bracket(whatever it's called) is way too beefy and won't let the der. fully seat even at full rotation.
