Strengths:    Shifts well, does what it's supposed to.

Weaknesses:    A lot finickier to set up than previous derailleurs I've installed including old rapid rise...

    Bottom Line:
Takes awhile to set up but, once you're done it's darn near perfect...

    Strengths:    Strong

Weaknesses:    doesn't shift under load very well.

    Bottom Line:
Got tired of the poor shifting. Switched to a SRAM X9 (my first SRAM product, I was always a Shimano guy) and problem was solved. I'm a SRAM user now

    Strengths:    look??

Weaknesses:    not doin what it suppose to do....changing gears!!!

    Bottom Line:
Came on the new bike about a year ago. Constant shadow shifting no matter how often it is adjusted. So after a year of every second day adjustment i've decided that's enough...
    I've got sram X9....problem solved.

    Strengths:    Low Profile, looks good

Weaknesses:    Cage spring breaks after 6 months of use JUNK!!!! This is my second XT shadow deralliuer to do this. Looks like Shimano is buying cheap Chineese metal and putting these Cr@ppy springs in their derailluers. WEAK!!!

    Bottom Line:
Not sure here... snapped once in a race and the last one snapped right before another big race. I don't know if I trust these at all anymore.

I used the old XT's for 3-4 years without any issues at all. They changed something here and these new ones just plain SUCK!!!!

Strengths:    Shifts smooth, pretty percise, works well under load

Weaknesses:    No adjusting barrel on derailleur itself

    Bottom Line:
I liked the fact it is such a low profile, but that is obviously the reason why there is no adjusting barrel, which limits which shifters you are able to use, some rear shifters DO NOT have adjusting barrels either, which means you can't adjust the derailleur. Other than that I like the way it performs, although I am currently running an 8 speed cog, so getting gear I've had to tune out 3rd gear for now. Other than that, a really good product for the coin.

    Strengths:    Great value. Quick shifting

    Weaknesses:    None I've found

    Bottom Line:
Great value for a smooth quick shifting derailleur. I've had no issues with this in the rainy conditions in WA commuting on my bike. You won't be disappointed once you get it tuned in perfectly.

Strengths:    Precise shifting once set up carefully

Weaknesses:    Simply would not stay in gear under load.

    Bottom Line:
The "Shadow" XT mech came with the bike. When climbing on steep sections of track the chain would wonder onto the surrounding 2 cogs that the shifter had set it on. So on the third from top sprocket, for example, the chain would wonder onto the sprocket above it or below it. This was so frustrating. After endless trips to the bike shop where I purchased this bike from we checked the frame, the hanger, obviously the mech, we changed the XT cassette, the chain, shifters and even 2 front chainrings. In the end my bike shop put a current but non-shadow XT mech on.....problem solved. Naturally I think very little of this "Shadow" design from Shimano. Nothing so fickle belongs on a Mountain Bike.

    Strengths:    Nice strong looks
    Smooth shifting
    Shadow design
    Reasonable price

    Weaknesses:    Weight,(Compare to the XTR)

    Bottom Line:
Except for the weight(compare to the XTR), everything is fine. It works so perfectly and smoothly. At first, it needed some tuning, after that it is perfect. You don't have to worry about repairing by the road side. It don't give you any trouble. What a perfect rear derailleur in this price. What an outstanding valuable rear derailleur!!
