Date Reviewed: March 4, 2009
Favorite Trail:Jesusita
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $55.00
Purchased At:Bicycle Bob's
Strengths:Solid design
Weaknesses:Minor chain slap on serious terrain, again minor.
Similar Products Used:XT, LX
Bike Setup:Stoke on two wheels
Bottom Line:I was torn between replacing my XT with an LX or Deore and didn't want to spend the $$$ for XT. I would never skimp on components but rear derailluer's take the most beating on the trails I ride, I want something cheap that works great. I'm pretty happy after three days at the bike park, one solid trail ride and racing at the Kenda Cup last weekend. Shifts great in all conditions except really hard climbs - the shift takes a little longer and isn't so smooth, but for the $ I'm not complaining. As for having it tuned every time you ride like the other reviews, mine seems to work better the more I break it in. I'm happy with the performance and recommend this for anyone looking to save a little $$$ and still have the function and dependability of XT or LX (minus the performance).

Duration Product Used:6 months
Purchased At:Stock with bike
Strengths:Reliable, precise
Weaknesses:No bling factor, doesn't gives me a valid excuse to change to other RDs
Bike Setup:Wheeler Pro29
Bottom Line:This RD comes together with my bike and I pretty satisfied with it after almost 3000km of riding, 90% road and 10% trails. Initially tuned by bike shops and it isn't very precise, had occasional missed shiftings. Didn't help much tuning the 'H' and 'L' screws either. Then one day, I decide to pull tight the cable attaching to the derailleur and never looked back since. Shifting becomes extremely snappy and precise. Did rapid down shifting and up shifting while speeding down slopes and gears change precisely on the shifter's clicks. And after my self tuning, it had not needed any adjustments for 2 months already.

Favorite Trail:Iron mountain
Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:Great for light duty use like commuting or XC.
Weaknesses:Cannot hold up on rough trails. After going down a mountain for about a mile I noticed the derailleur had snaped off.
Bottom Line:The derailleur can handle some of the mountain but not a constant beating. I would definitely purchase a more reliable derailleur if you like keeping a fast pace throughout a rough trail.

Strengths:Smooth shifting. Possibly cheap, but probably not cheap enough.
Weaknesses:Just weak. And slow!
Similar Products Used:X.7, LX
Bike Setup:Giant NRS3 with upgrades
Bottom Line:The performance is just not up to it.. Its fine for easy riders, but once you're doing anything demanding (including riding hilly roads) the mech just doesn't shift fast enough. I've tried heaps of adjustments, but I think its just a weak spring. Also the mech bobs excessively when riding over rough stuff, so ghost shifting is an issue.

I'm upgrading to an XT temporarily. Eventually I'll convert to SRAM X.9 to get the full performance out of my bike. I've been really happy with my X.7 set up on my hardtail.

Similar Products Used:XT, Altus
Bike Setup:Gary Fisher Tassajara GS
Bottom Line:The Deore doesn't seem to be durable as it's little cheaper sister the Altus. It changes Loud and Hard, not smooth like you'd expect (or hope). The 1st one I had Ate itself in a bad gear change so I tried a 2nd. If this one bites it (so far so good)...I'm gonna go with SRAM or maybe try backtracking into the Altus line.
Overall...It does it's job, if not begrudingly.

Bike Setup:2006 Marin Muirwoods city bike
Bottom Line:I have taken this thing in for 3 tune-ups and everytime it is the same thing, take it for 1 ride and it needs to be adjusted. I think I am going to replace it with the cheapo Altus that came off my old bike. I rode that for two years and never touched it once. I can't really give a fair value rating because it was a part that came on the bike. But if I would have purchased this because it says "Deore" I would be pissed.

Favorite Trail:geeknerd99@gmail.com
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $20.00
Purchased At:JensonUSA
Strengths:Survived getting caught in spokes, which snapped my hanger. Still shifts fine. Maintains tension sooo much better than POS Acera RD that came with bike.
Weaknesses:If you remove a pulley to install it, make sure you tighten BOTH pulleys after you're done! I found out the hard way when I jettisoned a pulley about 3 minutes into my test ride.
Similar Products Used:XT shifters and RD, X-9 shifters and RD, both on friend's bikes
Bike Setup:Frankenbike (Iron Horse Warrior Team SE) with new stem, handlebars, bar ends, grips, shifters, saddle, seat post, brakes, brake levers, pedals, crankset, FD, RD, tires, and soon a new fork and headset or a new set of wheels. Heck, why not both?
Bottom Line:For 20 bucks, not bad at all. I'm sure there's better out there (XT sounds tasty), but I'm sure this'll hold me over. My bike weighs about 32 pounds for a hardtail (a lot is in the wheels), so I'm not worried about weight. Oh, and black is totally cooler than silver on my frame.

Haven't been able to ride it rough yet, and I'm not sure about mud performance. Last 400 miles for me have been on the roads w/ my slicks, with 40 so far on this derailleur. I'll be back on the trails probably once or twice before it warms back up though.

5 for value, a conservative 4 for overall (considering I had to reinstall the upper pulley, which is quite a bit like playing with a mousetrap).

After 2 years it work so good that was silent tlike LX, and shifting was so good that I didn't belive, but after 4 years rideing and 15 000 miles it start to make noise. On the havy duty when you trying to change gear if you not pick a right moment it has problem with changing. Strengths:Solid, full metal construction (except the gears), good shifter, preformance you would expect from a derallieur in this price range.
Weaknesses:A little bit on the heavy side, not as precise in manufacturing as an XT or XTR (come on, what do you expect).
Similar Products Used:Alvio, Altus, older shimano derallieurs on road bikes

Bottom Line:If you are looking for a good derallieur for recreational riding then this is it. If you are a weight saving junkee, then maybee you shold think about XT or XTR. This derallieur is an economy version of the LX and XT derallieurs. When properly adjusted, it will function well. Some people say that it shifts poor and doesn't hold up and stuff. Bottom line:If you are a stupid retard who doesn't know how to preform a basic repair like adjusting/fixing a derallieur, or doesn't know how to ride properly, then don't buy this deraiileur and most definatley do not ride a bike on trails. Weaknesses:Botom pulley came completely off during normal easy ride within 6 mos of initial install. During initial install I tightened all screws on the derailler. When it "exploded" on the trail, the bottom pulley was nowhere to be found and the top one was bairly hanging on. Tried tightening that screw but within a 100 yds of walking the bike, the second pulley and screw were completely gone too. Apparently poor quality control on the trhread matching. I had a Deore DX that came on the bike originally which lasted for over 15 years with not a single screw coming loose. When it died, it was the internal spring that broke - not worth fixing according to the shop. Hmmmm......maybe I should try to fix the old one.

If you want to upgrade, don't go for this one, it will be better spend a few bucks more for a new derailler. But if your stuck with it, it pretty good.

Keeping the price in mind, you'll get what you paid for and so I went with the rear Deore for my GT iDrive. When new, it shifts very well under extreme load when properly adjusted. Right now, it has the XT sealed bearings pulleys from my dead XT rear derailleur (even top end stuff die in 1 year of hard riding!) and the rubber boot from my dead LX. Ever since I changed the pulleys, shifting is smooth and incredible even under crappy conditions where the stock Deore ones would seize up. If your Deore doesn't shift anymore, change them to XT pulleys and they will work again and better.

Bike Setup:Iron Horse LE for racing (Adventure racing), and cheap Mongoose "No Name" dual suspension frame w/ lot's up inexpensive upgrades for thrashing on the trail.
Bottom Line:OK, here it goes; This derailer is crap!!! I loved my XT, it can't be beat for the price. I'm not one that dumps alot of money into hardware because with my experience it all breaks the same; run a stick into the derailer, it's gone. Land hard and crash, it's finished, doesn't matter if it's $150, or $20. I bought this derailer under the same presumption. Since I bolted it on it never shifted for me. I could dump my shifter into 9th gear and I might get 5th out of the derialer. So I'd leave it there. Soon I'd start to ascend a hill and "BAM", next thing you know it's "auto-shifting" on me into 6th, 7th, 8th.....not good!!! So I'd dump the shifter back to first.....same thing, I might get 3rd, maybe 2nd if I'm lucky......then a lil further down the trail at the most inoppurtune time (like trying to pick up speed descending) "SMASH", auto-shift to 1st, or 2nd. Of course throwing my pedal everytime, possible leading to a crash, or at the very least having to put a foot down.
No amount of adjusting has ever corrected it. I've changed shifter's, cable, and cable housing trying to stay optimistic that is wasn't the derailer, but it was. I've since upgraded to a very inexpensive LX for my "Thrash Bike", but I will stick with the XT or better when it come's to dependable shifting during the important stuff.
I'd give no flaming Chili's for overall rating, but I have to put at least one.

You can tell the difference if you upgrade to LX or XT, but it may not be worth the extra cash you pay. Most of all I was impressed with the Deore 9 speed shifters, these work great. When installing I noticed a little play in the hinges but kept on being fortunate. I used it on a bike trip for 1 month where I did 6000 km in one piece without any breaks.

Results: The derailleur is still like new. No corrosion at all. The hinges stille seem to have the same amount of play (but it didn't have any impact on shifting). The pulley wheels are still fine and when greased they still feel like new. I can't see any wear in those bearings!!

I paid 25 Euros for the piece and for the price it's a catch!! Why?? Because after 6000 km it's still like new. So go for it. The only disadvantage is it's weight - I think it's close to 300 grammes.

Going back and forth between my Haro HT with the Deore and my IronHorse Hollowpoint frame wih the XT- the shifting difference is very subtle. Both shift flawlessly and hold adjustment very well. I think my XT will last longer as it seems better built, but during the first season for each (3-4 rides per week) the shifting performance is very close to equal. Weaknesses:with a short cahin setup, the lowest point is the cable adjust barrel, after a tiny knock from below, i have snapped the hollow threaded thingy (looka t any deraillier and you will know what i mean) that connects the cable to the main deraillier body. Also any collisions that it incurs tend to make it loose from the larger bolt. don't worry, it's not as bad as i make it sound and performs well for its price. most of the time it will noy give youy any trouble.

Bottom Line:I upgraded the deore RD to an XT after the deore FD literally just up and fell apart three months after buying the bike, I left the deore shifters on (those shifters rock 3,000 miles and counting). I figured that if the FD is that junky the RD may be and I'd rather swap it now than risk a break 20 miles down the road. It did work well up to that point and it does get the job of a RD done. However the performance jump to XT was very unexpected, I was just after higher durabilty / mfg quality. Even with the deore shifters the XT RD made the shifts so smooth it was like riding a different bike. And it wasn't a shop install either, I had adjusted the deore and installed the XT. The XT also stays adjusted much longer, if you have the cash, go XT (though the new ones are that 'low normal' garbage, I'm thinking of trying SRAM when my current der's/shifters wear out), if you don't have the cash, this will work. 5 for value since it's inexpensive, 3 for overall since it's run of the mill

Strengths:The Deore shifts reliably throughout the entire cassette's range of cogs and is easy to tune and hold its settings.
Weaknesses:Upshifting under even a mild load is difficult and the derailleur gives off some horrible grinding sounds. The spring is weak, resulting in nasty chain slap when going off drop-offs as small as 1 ft. On occasion, the chain will drop down to a smaller cog due to the loss of chain tension.
Similar Products Used:Shimano XT
Bike Setup:'03 Haro Extreme X1 - Marzocchi MX Comp w/ETA fork, Fox Float AVA RL, Magura Julie hydro brakes.
Bottom Line:I feel the Deore performs well for its price. For the average rider, this derailleur is more than up to the task of everyday riding around campus, to work, etc. However, once the Deore is put to the test by a more aggressive rider, it shows its limitations. For me, the most glaring problem is the weak spring. The trails I like to ride on have numerous small drop-offs about a foot or two in height at most. Even with a protector, my chainstay is taking a good whack every time I get a little air. On top of that, the problem of my chain jumping cogs haunts me on the bigger drop-offs. I have had good experience with Shimano and plan to stick with their products. Once I get some time, I will replace the OE Deore with an XT.

Strengths:Holds adjustment well, relatively quick shifts. Smooth & pretty quiet. Decent price (replacement cost ain't too high, cuz you know you're gonna smoke it)
Weaknesses:Same old wear-em out Shimano pulleys. The plastic around the barrrel adjuster has a tendency to crush on Shimano derailleurs.
Similar Products Used:Deore XT, Alivio, Acera-X, Shimano 600 Ultergra, Older (1991) Deore LX, Suntour A-5000, Suntour XCE 4050, Shimano XC 7000, Sachs/SRAM Plasma, SunRace M60 (this deraileur is at a similar price point and easily out performs Deore-level stuff, hard to find, but a worthwhile look)

Kenda tires on both. WPD-103 pedals. LJ2000 1100 pound rear shock.
Bottom Line:Its not SRAM or high-end SunRace by a long shot.Be prepared to tinker with it until you get it right. The design is strong, quiet, and holds adjustment once dialed in. Deore levers shifter pods are the weak link in the group. get yourself some SRAM twisters or a set of attack lever-pods. Sunrace twisters would be fine, too.

If it comes with your bike, use it up, upgrade later. If you are a derailleur-trasher and need a readily findable derailleur that you'll swat and replace 6 months from now, Deore is for you.

Its not a bad derailleur--by a long shot--but there are better ones out there for the same...or just a little more dough.

It doesn’t need almost to adjust: I tuned it every 1000 Km, after a deep cleaning. I had only some problems in the extreme dry Spanish summer but there were the wires; they were to dry, with dust everywhere and sometimes they blocked it.

To shift up and down is no problem for it, even if you are climbing (I use it with old STX-RC 8 speeds shifter). It is also easy to tune. I am very happy with it and would recommend it for every “normal” XC Rider. I guess it can be destroyed in a hard way to riding, DH, Freeride…

Maybe im being to hard on the little thing but ever since it has completely died on me tonight i thing of how much trouble and hassle it was in the past.

Thought it was a wicked awesome derailleur while it was in good working order. But im going to get an xtr.

Strengths:good looking, good performing
Weaknesses:not wrapped in $100 bills, has not brought me an ounce of fame, will not help me win the california recall election, does not go out on beer runs when asked. it thinks it can just sit there and shift gears, AND i even have to push a lever to make it do that!
Similar Products Used:friend's lx- no difference? deore looks better than that queer lx vlue, anyway.

Bottom Line:the combo of parts i have on the bike produces excellent shifting. i don't ride over barbed wire, i don't ride northshore style, and i wouldn't, like a reviewer below, put five of anything on anything in a decade, let alone in a year. it works really well, and it's cheap. if you want prettier stuff, by all means spend more, but if you want a part that works, buy this one.

Bike Setup:2001 Raleigh M50 with many mods
Bottom Line:This unit worked perfectly until a couple of weeks ago when I ran over a long thin wire, which went through the derailleur and the cassette and instantly tweaked the cage out 90 degrees. I was able to remove the wire and bend the cage back down and ride about 5 miles home on gear #4, but my subsequent efforts to repair the item were fruitless. I finally did get it to shift pretty good but the chain kept jumping around at odd intervals. So, I ashcanned the whole thing and got a new XT at SuperGo SM for only $35. The main difference between these two units is that the XT has sealed pulley bearings and waterproof cable boots, which is good because I cross axle-deep streams from time to time.
But up until it got bent, the sturdy Deore was simply perfect. I had it on an 8 speed set-up and it never missed a shift the whole time I had it.

Strengths:Cheap. Shifts smoothly at first.
Weaknesses:Doesn't shift into highest gear (outer cog) reliably. Return spring doewn't seem powerful enough.
Similar Products Used:Most of Shimano's MTB groups and also some of their Road components. Test ridden some Campy components.
Bike Setup:Swiss made, 26" Villiger Cabonga trekking frame made from lugged, horizontally ovalized and tapered, Oria cromo steel from Italy (built to haul travel luggage). I scavanged the Deore rear deralleur from my other bike temporarilly.
Bottom Line:Works extremely well at first, but then loses precision noticeably. I've ridden mostly road miles in eastern Europe and have owned it for less than a year. I clean it regularilly and even replaced the cable to ensure smooth operation. Despite this, it just won't shift reliably to the outer cogs.

People around here bike lots of miles-per-year to commute and bike dealers say that unreliable high-gear shifting is a common problem they see with Deore rear derailleurs. I'm thinking about tweeking the main spring...if it doesn't work, then nothing is lost. Rest of Deore group seems ok, but I think Shimanski could easily change the design of their rear derailleur spring. Of course, maybe that's how they get people to upgrade to XT. Too cynical?

I will stand by this derailler because it is inexpensive, does the job and hey if it takes the 6ft fall its only 60bucks to replace. And for people that do have problems with it, theres a simple application called maintenence, use it, it works wonders.

I took the Deore off my Trek 4900 and put on to my son's Trek 4300. This product smooth and very reliable. We ride all year, and this inexpensive offering has held-up through gravel, mud, and snow.

I have the LX/XT combination on both my Trek STP 200 and Trek 4900, which has been bullet proof. If your bike came with the Deore as standard gear, keep it. When going for the upgrade, bypass LX and go straight for XT.

Sincerely

Strengths:This derailer dose shift good and smooth, and is maid of quality materials. It also has a good finish
Weaknesses:This derailer is not very durable for long rides and is very likely to leave you stranded without any chain guide pulleys. It also weighs allot. And must constantly be adjusted.

Bottom Line:The stupid deore derailer fell apart within 35 miles of me installing it. (Though before that it worked well) and left me stuck in the middle of the woods with no upper chain guide pulley. (Though you can fix this problem buy using lock-tight on the bolts) I do not trust this product at all! If I were going to buy a derailer I would look at the XTR's they are the "god" of the derailer world and well worth the 60-80 bucks do it Wright the first time and you will save money by not having to replace you’re crappy parts. But if you don’t think it is worth it than look fore there good old STX's they are the prelude to XTR however they can be found for under $20. Good luck

Ive had great luck with everything made by Shimano, even the bottom of the barrel Tourney stuff that was on my huffy. Oh yeah, did yall know its possible to install a rear derailleur without breaking the chain? Yep, you just gotta take off the back of the cage and feed the chain through the pulleys.
