Strengths:    I ride this setup in all conditions all the time....Rain, Fog, sleet and all that other stuff. I have raced it for a full two seasons and it never let me down once except when hit by the random radar gun or radio station/cell tower.....This tends to lock it up but this can be easly resolved by an on the fly reset or as I do I carry an extra head (cpu) with me.....

Weaknesses:    I have no real complaints in this area as all systems have a downside...I do like the fact that if the battery dies you can actually still shift manually....They just don't make it any more.....

Bottom Line:   
thousands cheaper then the new Record electronic but unfortunatly it is no longer available....

Strengths:    Great shifting system, great shifting system. Its 21st Century all the way. Its light, multiple shifting positions and added aero positions for your hands. Compatible with Campy 9sp and Shimano 9sp wheels and cogsets.

Weaknesses:    They don't make it anymore or plan on new features. CPU is bulky. The front derailure need to be electronic as well for the full effect. Rear derailure sticks out more than a regular derailure. Radar guns.

Bottom Line:   
It works like any other derailure system only electronically, smoother, quieter, wirelessly, with multiple shifter button locations. You have to be into gadgets to use it, if you're not then don't bother (in other words non-techie people stay away, it involves reading). Yes, the batteries have died but you can buy them at any 7/11 or AM/PM store, you can't say that about a derailure cable. Yes, its jammed, but there is a solution if you have read the manual, you reset the system and you're back to a perfectly shifting system in a matter of 1 or 2 minutes, I've done this without stopping! If it does realy jam up you can shift it to any cog manually (stop and move it with your hand), try doing that with your regular cabled system if the cable breaks, no way. I've ridden it in the rain, I've crashed and biffed it (like any regular dereailure) and it still works. I've never been stranded as you can still pedal the bike no matter which gear you're stuck in, reading the above should clear any issues on how to continue to ride even in the extreme condition of a jam up (all you need is a reset or new batteries). Changing the batteries once a year will prevent the low bat condition, they're cheap enough.

If you see a cop with a radar gun pointed at you, you might as well start reseting the CPU as I've had radar guns always cause the system to lock up on me. What was the cop thinking aiming that thing at me anyway, I guess he thought I'd break the 45mph speed limit on a short climb? Actually wait till you pass the cop before resetting it.

Chris Boardman had it written into his contract (when he raced) that he would use the Zap or Mektronic system on his TT bike, so there's something to be said about that considering the TT/Prologue wins? Chris is a techie guy so that sums that up.

CampyTronic is coming in 2005! So electronic is the way to go, get used to it or are you still driving a car with non-electronic ignition?

Strengths:    Absolutely FLAWLESS shifting! I love the Mektronic system. I think the morons who hate the Mektronic system are probably the same idiots who cannot get rid of the flashing time on their VCR's. Effortless, accurate shifting from three positions! The CAAD4 frame is very stiff and responsive. A very domfortable ride. Rocket sprints!Awesome paint job too...

Weaknesses:    None noticed in over a year! Probably why I stick with Cannondale for road & mountain bikes.

Bottom Line:   
When you are ready to get into the 21st century and do away with cumbersome cable shifting, you'll take the leap and get the Mektronic Electronic Shifting. If you follow the set-up instructions (RTFM...Read the Friggin Manual) your shifts will be 100% effortless, flawless and accurate!

Strengths:    WOW technology, quick multiple shifts. When everything clicks, it is one awesome machine.
Mavic did replace computer and derailleur on warranty once.
Cannot say enough good about support from bike shop.


Weaknesses:    Bike wood not shift and had bike ride (Ragbrai) in 4 days and Mavic will not next day ship warranty items. Took 6 days to get parts and bike from shop. Very unreliable. Very seldom are all components working all at the same time. Requires at least 1 hour of trouble shooting per week. Carry manual at all times - breaks down frequently on road. Upside: When broken, it is still the best 2 speed bike I've ever riden.

Bottom Line:   
The Cannodale is great. Stay away from Mektronic until at least generation 5. I think problem is connection between computer and saddle. Mektronic system seems too delicate for the real world.

+ different
+ no effort
+ 3 shifters
+ quiet
+ quick
+ no derailleur adjustment
+ easy to put on & set up


Weaknesses:    - not reliable
- fragile
- bulky
- computer not accurate
- try to shift on cobblestones ...
- zip ties
- not good with aerobars


Bottom Line:   
This product is much better than shimano & campagnolo...
WHEN IT WORKS !
I don't trust it anymore because :
- When you start a ride, you never know if you will make it back...
- One day I wanted to shift up and it shifted down
- One day it was shifting all my demands 1mn later. (imagine that when you climb)
- One day it was just shifting when I was on the small ring
The bottom line is : don't buy it !

Don't trust any electronic on your bike (the same happened to me with the CANNONDALE ELO)

Strengths:    wierd, unusual

Weaknesses:    750 tag doesn't include the cassette or front der from what i understood. the front der is still cable activated. I heard it is uci banned since a year ago. the r.d. is way sticking out and just plain ugly. And what if you lose a race b/c that battery dies or radio interference?

Bottom Line:   
buy some dura ace or maybe a Pauls der's if you just have to get extra fancy and blow wads of cash. If you set the bike down on rt side, you will tear up the der.

Strengths:    It is light, and looks way trick, very ergonomical

Weaknesses:    This product has zero reliablity, I have been left up in the mountains having to stop and "hand shift" i.e. manually force the frozen derailuer into the gear I needed to get home. I have had it my Mektronic in the shop more times than I have ridden it. Mavic has given me a new unit once under the warranty. But the problem of it not shifting still continues while out on a ride. I think it might have a problem of a static charge build up or something. It is a total mystery. Needless to say I'm an unhappy customer. If you buy it, I hope your experience is better than mine!

Bottom Line:   
Mavic normally makes great equipment, I feel this is not up to the quality of the other components they make. I would have purchased something else with my hard earned money. When you race, you have to first finish to be able to finish first. This stuff is not up to standard on reliablity.
