Price Paid: $250.00
Strengths:light, pretty, easy in and out for maintenance.
Weaknesses:lasted less than 2000 miles
Bike Setup:Oswald 26" XC with 2003 XTR grouppo
Bottom Line:After an estimated 500 hours and 2 BB bearing replacements, the crank spindle exploded while pedaling hard. I weigh 170 lbs and I do not have a remarkable history of component breakage. Coupled with the extreme price of chainrings available for these things, these cranks should not be considered as an option: Fortunately they are now discontinued. These cranks are part of one of the worst grouppos shimano has released.

Strengths:Light and strong and look good too. I can't even imagine how those guys at shimano can hollowcast this beautifuly. No a sign of CNC mill anywhere except the screw holes. Is this art?!
Weaknesses:The replacement chain rings are expensive and I am not sure for how long they will keep manufacturing them just for those few of us who do not want to replace their old XTRs for new ones.
Similar Products Used:Race Face Deus, Evolve, and an old, beat up LX.
Bike Setup:XTR crank with SRAM chain and sprokets. X9 rear and Xt front.
Bottom Line:Has a good and positive shift feel with a SRAM chain (990), however not as smooth as that of Shimano I used before. Had the chain rings replaced twice already (at the cost of an arm and a leg). Each time I was tempted to just forget about the rings and buy a XT or a Raceface Evolve or something. But these are the best cranks I have used and are just light enough for you not to regret buying them.
I also think with the SRAM chain, the rings seem to wear a bit faster, But not sure yet.

Weaknesses:Finish scratches too easy.

Bike Setup:19-pound Cannondale XC hardtail
Bottom Line:The XTR M960 crankset is almost too easy, to install. They are very stiff, and you will notice that on the very first turn of the cranks.

I got these because I was not able to use Cannondales' uber-light(620 gram + BB) Hollowgram Si BB30 crankset(need BB30-compatible frameset for that = $2,500+!!!). They work absolutely beautiful for light XC trail riding. Once you come across highly-technical obstacles and steep jumps- you will have problems. The all aluminum chainrings are NOT designed for being bashed around at all. The hollow BB spindle will warp, if you huck around 5 foot drops. If you can simply remember that lightweight bike parts are INCOMPATIBLE for Freeride/Dirt Jump/Downhill.....you will never be dissappointed.

I got mine second-hand, and still paid a premium for them! But they are well worth it, if you ride XC and light All-Mountain. You can mash the cranks all you want uphills, and the chainrings will still deliver. Until SRAM comes out with a better competing MTB crankset......I'm afraid Shimano XTR is still the king!

Strengths:Light, Strong, Durable. I weigh 205 lbs and I bought this in 2003 when they 1st came out. I have done quite a bit of riding, and they have worked great with no issues. I just had them installed in a new bike, and the bearings are still good, but, I did finally buy a new middle and small chain ring.
Weaknesses:they are beautiful when new, but, scratch up pretty good.

Bottom Line:Hands down the best cranks on the market. Worth the extra money (if any). Stiff, look good, lightweight. Function as a $250+ pair of cranks should. You can buy the M960 (older version) for the same price as most of the competitors top of the line models. Do yourself a big favor and do not stray from Shimano or you will be asking for trouble. I replaced a shoddy pair of Race Face Dues cranks with the M960 XTR and could not be happier. The Race Face never worked properly from day one and the Shimano XTR's have worked perfectly from the very beginning.

My outboard bearings were completely shot, too, and had to be replaced.

I really do like this crankset's performance when everything is functioning, but it's turning into a money pit.

I can't say the same for the Race Face that I used for a few seasons. I'm not sure why these have such a low score. Compared to the Race Face this crankset is AWESOME. I guess they are stiff, I really cannot tell. No complaints, just smiles. 5 chilis for value at the great price I bought them for.

Strengths:light, strong, durable and I think it is much easier to service the external bearing style cranks than the old style.
Weaknesses:I would complain about the weak finish but its a Mt Bike drive chain part. Your a nut if you expect it to stay perfect.
Similar Products Used:Bontrager crap, Deor, XT, XTR 950

Bottom Line:I was really concerned about installing this crankset, considering what the rest of the folks here had to say. I'm a 6-4, 200lb, agressive trail rider and have trashed many lesser cranks. After thinking it through, I decided to take a chace on the 960 as the 2007 models were too high. So far, so good! I'm careful to clean my bike well, especially the drivechain, after every ride. I will completely tear down the drive chain after muddy rides or every couple of weeks. I never wash my bike with a hose but use multiple sized brushes and damp shop rags instead. I was very mindful of the chain line when setting it up. The combination of these things has allowed almost no sign of visible wear (other than the pewter colored finish of the arm) after 6 months of hard bashing. The BB is still smooth as the 1st day it was installed. For me, propper instillation, regular maintenance and smart cleaning techniques have proven this to be a 1st class crankset.

Strengths:This is one light crankset that looks sharp on the bike. Performance is great very stiff and spins like butter. If you have high end XC or All Mtn setup you can get a pretty good deal on these now.
Weaknesses:Chain rings are made out of tin or something not quite as hard. Mine looked lke they had been through a shredder after about 6 months of mostly singletrack riding. I noticed that the drive train would ghost shift when climbing in a lowere gear. Now granted I am no lightweight but my last bike had XT and zero issues with the chain rings. I also lube my chain at least every other ride and change it twice a year. I also use a park chain cleaner whenever the drive train starts to get dirty... SO bottom line it aint a maintenance issue

Bottom Line:Well.... After you trash the stock chain rings which won't take long order you a set of Blackspire chain rings and you will be set. The difference in quality between the Blackspire and stock XTR rings is night and day and the Blackspires are about half the price...

I've since moved to Denver. The rides have gotten longer and more technical. I have demanded more of my bike and the XTR setup then ever. I'm happy to report that everything still performs admirably. There have been no problems whatsoever with this 2004 XTR setup. The shifts are still smooth and crisp. The crank arms still feel solid and flex-free. XTR has really lived up the hype for me. Solid cranks through and through.

Bottom Line:These are very sharp looking cranks with a really cool design. Oh, yeah, they work great, too; they're very stiff and very responsive. But if you’re trying to decide between these and XT, save your money. My old 952’s were totally worth the premium because they had the bigger chain rings I prefer; I always thought that the micro drive rings spec'ed in the past on everything up to XT were cheesy. Now that XT and XTR have the same gearing and bottom bracket design, the performance difference, whatever it is, probably isn’t worth the price increase. But I love these and have had no problems with them after one season. If you're going to drop the kind of cash these babies require, be sure to get them installed right.

First of all you NEED to get your bb shell faced! Also the chain line needs to set up correctly. The bolts need to be tightened to the specified torqe, i tend go a little bit tighter, but only slightly.
I'm a big guy, on the wrong side of 100kgs, and i ride agresivly, and i've had no problems.
yes, the chain rings are expensive, but what do expect when buying XTR?

To sum up, these cranks are brillant. If you can afford them, buy them. But make sure you get a decent mechanic to install them and get the BB faced!

Bottom Line:I bought my bike on EBay about a year ago as a project bike. It was two years old, and came from Minnesota, which, of course, meant it got wet, which, of course meant the crank bearings were already noisy and rough. Plus the two inner rings showed replaceable wear. I started my research here, saw all the horror stories about bearings lasting three months and exclusive rings lasting seven months, and initially decided to replace the crank. I’m glad I did a little more research, because both problems are relatively easily solved, and it’s really a nice crankset, stiff, light and beautiful, and trouble-free when properly set up.

1. The problem with the Shimano bearings is inadequate seals, and their placement—at the very outside of the bottom bracket, totally exposed. If they get wet, they will probably fail. The solution is to send the bearing cups to Phil Wood (philwood.com). He’ll install a set of his bearings for about $46, less than a replacement set of Shimano bearings. Phil Wood bearing sets not only use vastly superior bearings and lubricant, but the seals are marine grade. In other words, the bearings are submersible. I have one of his bottom brackets on my road bike with over 40,000 miles on it, and it is as tight and smooth as new. And they turned my bearing cups around in one day. I mailed them on a Saturday and had them back on Wednesday.
2. Regarding the rings, both Boone Titanium (http://www.boonerings.com/cr/cr.html), and Cycle Dynamics (http://www.cycle-dynamics.com/) make rings for the XTR 960 crankset. They cost about the same as stock Shimano rings, but should last at least four or five times longer, making them roughly as expensive as regular replacement alloy rings. I have about a thousand miles on a Boone granny and middle, with no visible wear. Two caveats: plan ahead—they’re custom made, I was quoted 6 weeks, but it took 8—and be sure to specify that your rings are cut from 4mm stock to match the thickness of the original Shimano rings. Jenson also sells a steel granny they say will fit the XTR 960.

Weaknesses:Proprietary BCD 64/102 (No one makes replacements. Middle ring wore out quickly (possibly due to chain line and using a Pc99 chain ?) Anyway. Very dissapointed when trying to find a new middle ring. Also, I wanted to put a 42 big ring on to spend more time there and save the middle. But, no one makes one for XTR 960. So, I'll go with a thru axle crank with outboard bearing next time that is standard 64/104.

Bottom Line:I have not had any bearing problems. I guess reading these reviews I will pack them regular and have to baby them. Anyway, the biggest Disappointment is the non standard BCD gimick. So you are very limited on what size chainrings you can use. (And you can't use Blackspire, FSA, Raceface etc. cause far as I know they don't make the 102/63 to fit XTR 960 Crankset. Also It states 64 for granny but I tried and standard 64 and there was about a 1/2 millimeter size difference.....

very minimal chainline adjustment

Bottom Line:These were great when i got them on a new bike when they came out, looked flashy and shifted well and were really stiff. Well i rode them for a while and was happy with them, but then 5 months into the race season the middle/big chainring are worn out, these rings are as expensive as hell. thank god i've got a lbs employee discount, holy crap sorry for anyone who has to pay retail. Well, as well after a few dusty races the bbs squeaked like nothing else. Then i raced at snowshoe, wv (lots of rain) and the squeaking would not stop whatso ever and would barely spin, they had let so much mud into them that they needed replacement. Well to make a long story short, it came to 3 ring replacments and two xtr bbs later (even tried a dura ace one, which didnt do anything) and shimano still is making horrible chainrings out of butter and bbs that keep water out as well as bush can run a country (terribly). So fed up, i finaly switched and got a set of Race Face Dues Xc cranks and am loving them for the 3 months i've had em. So stay away from these cranks, the bbs and rings suck and the finish just rubs away worse than a $60 crank. And these things cost way to much to.

The bearings are still the originals supplied with the cranks. They've been a bit gritty for a months now but don;t seem to be wearing out so I can only conclude that the gritty sounds comes from dirt thats trapped just behind the plastic cover and is not in the bearings themselves.

The chainrings look tatty early on but careful measure showed that they were still usable.

Overall I've done about 5000km on this groupset over the last 2 yrs of ownership and it is still holding up well, especially the cranks.
They're scrathed and dented from rocks hitting them but they's still turning and the 2nd set of rings should bring my shifting back to acceptable levels.

NOW I KNOW I'VE ONLY BEEN RIDING FOR 16 YEARS, BUT I DON'T KNOW MANY TRAIL RIDERS THAT 'WEAR OUT' A BIG CHAINRING, COME ON!, MORE LIKELY ITS BECAUSE PEOPLE HAVE BANGED THEM UP. MOST OF MY BUDDIES HAVE BEEN RIDING THESE CRANKS TOO AND WITHOUT ISSUES? GO FIGURE. Bottom Line:Well, I got caught up in all of the hype surrounding these cranks and I have to be honest: I'm disappointed. The crankset has spent almost as much time OFF my bike as it has ON my bike. I'm constantly lubricating the "sealed" bearings and replacing O-rings. Most recently, my 32T chainwheel needed replacing and not one single Canadian distributor, including Shimano Canada, had one in stock that would work with the compact crankset. The solution: I had to swap the 22T chainwheel (which I've barely used) with a brand new 24T, AND I had to buy a brand new 32T. Yep. $200 to replace one chainring. Thanks Shimano. When oh when will SRAM make a complete drivetrain?

Don't fool yourselves...this crankset is NOT the bomb. I'd say it is no better or worse than any other average crankset out there. Buy some NextLP's instead.

Bottom Line:After hearing MANY reviews about the shot bearings, I read an article on the poor machining of many bottom bracket *(BB) shells. Cartridge type BB have the bearings located inside the housing. This made them impervious to the quality of the machining of the BB shell. The XTR outboard bearing BB (just like all new outboard BB designs) are much more susceptible to BB shells that are not machined precisely. If one side of the shell is not machined completely parallel with the otherside, you have excess pressure and friction on the outboard bearings. This leads to excessive wear and, ultimately, malfunction of the BB. This may not seem perceptible at first, but definately plays a role in the performance of the crankset.

This is not the wrench's fault, nor is it Shimano's. The BB shell must be machined almost perfectly for this type of BB design to work long term. Another factor is the torque applied to the BB cups. Excessive force used to tighten the cups will also lead to premature wear of the bearings.

That said, I installed my XTR crankset over 15mo ago- believe me, I sweated the details- and they have been running smooth. I ride every weekend from Michigan (Custer & Yankee) to Palos. The bike has been through streams and garden hoses. The bearings are fine- the crankset runs smooth. I have absolutely no complaints about reliability or longevity. The outboard bearings are great and they lasted through winter riding as well.

Shimano still makes the smoothest shifting rings out there. Quality, performance, and reliability- pick three...

These guys have their act together and I know that it was installed correctly, second I've built enough bikes myself to know the difference between a correctly installed BB and one that has been botched. I noticed a sqeaking noise today coming from the BB, so I pulled the crank and found the the bearings where shot. Best thing I ever did was get rid of my xtr shifters and switch to sram trigger shifters. I'm going to check into a race face crank. As the existing shimano parts I have now wear out, they are being replaced with something other than shimano. Most of the xtr line cost too much, isn't any better than other brands and is not a quality product. But their derailleurs are nice. Bottom Line:My feeling is most of you having problems with these cranks are improper setup. If your chain line is too far off, then you'll wear down the chain rings in no time. Properly installed, these cranks should give you no problems. I ride hard and race even harder. I race expert and had these cranks long enough to notice wear patterns. Some minor wear in the chainrings are normal for somebody who puts a lot of torque on the drivetrain. It wears no more than my old Race Face Turbine LPs. I have a friend who has the same crankset on his Specialized. His chain rings wore extremely fast, but his chainline was pretty far off compared to my Blur.

In regards to bearing wear, when you install the bearing, you have to be careful of the plastic seals that hold the bearings. My LBS says most people install the bearings incorrectly and damage the seal, thereby letting in moisture and destroying the bearings. Since they seem to know what they were talking about, I had them install my crankset. About 8 months and well over 2,000 hard miles, the crankset is holding up well. After this summer, I plan to replace the rings. I keep the chain well lubed and clean after each ride/race. I measure carefully chain stretch and replace the chain religiously. That and correct installation seem to key to a long lasting drivetrains.

Bottom Line:These cranks met my expectations. I waited for a while before I made my initial purchase to make sure that any kinks were worked out from Shimano. Granted these cranks are relatively new to the MTB scene. We were told that these cranks are ultra light (as compared to old style XTR). We were told that these cranks are stiffer due to the fact that the BB bearings are on the outer part of the BB shell. Initial reviews from all MTB magazines have given these cranks high ratings. Granted, they may have been paid to give a good review by Shimano. But, I have seen reviews of other products (ie, from Shimano, Rock Shox, Manitou) go the other way. What I am trying to say is that Shimano has a great product here. There are alot of people that are riding this product. The number of people that made it to this review site are insignificant to the amount of product that is currently out there right now. And I would bet that most, if not all, of the people out there that like or love this product don't care to give their review because they are out riding their bikes. But, as soon as the littlest of things go wrong....than by all means let's post a bad review and tell EVERYONE not to buy this product. Let's be realistic here...

There may be issues with the integrity of the BB bearings not being sealed because they are on the outside of the shell. There may be an issue where the non-drive side crank arm keeps falling off (which, BTW, seems to be the most absurd thing that I have heard about this product thus far). And there may be an issue with chainring wear. I am a XC rider and I try to ride about 3-4 times a week. I ride about 80 miles each week when time allows. Sometime more, sometime less. I have put a lot of miles on my cranks over the last year. I have not had one single problem or issue with my cranks. Granted I had to replace a middle chainring now (which BTW cost me $50 at Cambriabikes.com). All chainrings will wear out eventually. Also, to address a question on the value of chainrings...I have seen Race Face rings at my LBS go for $50-$85. $100 for a 44 tooth ring is not that much more. Now as far as the wear of the XTR rings goes, you need to ask yourself a couple of questions when addressing the chainring issue. What type of rider are you? Do you clean your drivetrain after each and every ride? If you are an agressive rider and are constantly hammering it out on the trail, than fatigue will definately set in merely due to the torque that is being applied to the drivetrain. Also, dirt and grease that gets into the chain will wear out the cassette and chainring prematurely, if it isn't cleaned out properly. Now as far as the BB bearings goes, I can't truly comment on that because I don't have a problem with that. I do, however, try to keep the bike dry and away from water. I don't spray my bike in that area with direct water when cleaning it. I have also found that normal BB's have just as much water penetration in them as anything else. I have pulled out BB's from my bike that have been seriously corroded with rust and junk. Nothing is invincible or impervious to water.

When you deal with any type of product like this, you need to understand that the manufacturer has tolerances and variances that go into the manufacturing process. Some product may be at one end of the spectrum while other's may be in the middle or at the other end. Shimano is working on these issues, if in fact they are issues, I am positive. The first year that a product comes out will always have some sort of issue. Just make sure that you have followed the installation instructions to the letter and follow the torque spec's as well. Improper installation will ultimately lead to a failure in the product somewhere.

Don't be quick to judge this product. If something goes wrong, than so be it...you may be in a pool of people that represents less than 1% of those that use these cranks.

These cranks are great. I like them and will continue to use them. I will recommend them to anyone.

Bottom Line:I like the xtr hollow cranks, they've worked great so far, not crazy about the finish rubbing off so fast, but it is cosmetic and not a big deal. I'm not crazy about the fact that water keeps getting in to the bottom braket casing, they where installed when I had the bike built at my local bike shop...I do believe they where installed correctly and I have alot of faith in my local shop....so it is my belief that this is an issue with the XTR hollow cranks and not the installation. I have lost a lot, if not all faith in Shimano products...this stems from many other reasons not related to the XTR hollow cranks, but to the entire New line of Shimano components as a whole. Since I started feeling this way about Shimano components I have tried various other crank sets, shifters, deraillures, etc... and have found these other manufacture components to work just as good if not better, half or a third the price of Shimano and the customer support to be outstanding, where as Shimano has no customer support what so ever.

Bottom Line: I am neutral about the XTR hollow cranks. But once these wear out or break, I'm going with a different manufacturer. I intend to remove every Shimano component I have, as they need to be replaced. I would recommend seeking out another crank other than the XTR Hollow crank, I believe this crank is totally over priced and not any better than Race Face or Truvativ cranks.

3 chilis...I guess this is as close to neutral as I can get.

Shimano used to test their products before releasing them. I should have known not to buy the new XTR after not seeing pro's use any of this CRAP last year. Shimano used to do their homework, now they just sling their "new fangled crap" just like everyone else. The bottom line, the brakes suck and so do the cranks/bb.

The bearings are already outboard, so there's no stiffnes improvement I can think of. All I get is a crappy chain line because Shimano is too cheap to manufacture both versions. Bottom Line:This is a good crank - except for the bearings. I haven't had any of the shifting problems that others speak about, and the crank fits the Blur well. The comments from other reviewers about the finish wearing out quickly, etc, is fluff. If you ride a mountain bike, finishes show wear.

However, the crank bearings have already worn out after about 3000 kilometres, which is much too fast considering the cost of the crank. The old XTR BB typically lasted about one season, which isn't very long. (The annoyance with the old XTR BB was that Shimano didn't honour their warranty. I was told by the rep. that I used a pressure washer on the bike, and that this voided the warranty. I didn't use a pressure washer, and Shimano used this as an excuse to avoid responsibility on several occasions.) Now, I've heard from friends that Shimano isn't honouring the warranty on the new XTR bearings. I'll find out soon if this is the case. My XT BB on my old hard tail lasted years under the same riding conditions.

The sales hype about the new XTR crank left out an important consideration for most riders - that is, it's a high maintenance product. It is stiff and light.

The installation and setup was very unenventful as everything lined up just fine. The BB wrench as well as spacers are provided.

The bearings have not shown any signs of foul play. I've been through several stream crossings and have not noticed any degradation in the smoothness or stiffness of the BB. Shimano has put the component industry on alert- these cranksets are the real deal, worth the cost.

For $450 you'd think Shimano would make it perfect. But this universal bb causes the Q-factor(distance beteen your feet) to be wider than what is most effecient. My XT setup with a 113mm bb is over an inch narrower! Plus the chainline is at such an angle you can't spin backwards without the chain hoping gears. These are gross errors on Shimano's part and this crankset should not be considered until they offer it different sizes. For the dough they're asking for this is obvious. Weaknesses:None yet. Oh, I did scratch them, so i am mad they are not totally impervious to rocks

Bottom Line:In the history of cranks, these are the best. Stiff, lite, cool, Very easy to set up, almost too easy. I thought i was doing something wrong. I have not had a problem with Q factor, and the chain line is a little quirky. I can only use the XTR chain and can no longer use my nice Rohloff chain as it is a bit too wide. The Sram chain is even wider. Oh Well.

Bottom Line:This is a follow up review from my first, I have abot 300 mi. on these cranks now & couldnt be more happy, they have worked flawlessly. All I can say is these are some of, if not the best cranks available today! If you dont know what your doing dont take chances trying to install them youself(they are expensive and the bike your installing them on probably is as well), secondly if your a moron who rides around the parking lot of the LBS and thinks he or she should give a review on ANY component or bike, do us all a favor...DON'T. Again if you want the best XC cranks and can afford them BUY THESE CRANKS!

Bottom Line:This is by far the best crankset/bb combo i have ever tried, working at a bike shop i have seen the whackiest setups and designs and this is the best out of all of them. To all ignorant reviwers, a word of advice, RIDE THE DAMN PARTS BEFORE POSTING CRAP AND WHINES. Price is high because of development and advertising so dont complain if its "tooooo expensive" you want it you buy it. thats how it works, also it is the stiffest thing on my bike and on anyone elses. if you got the money go out an buy it. best xc crankset ever to be made. Strengths:Great looking, SMOOTH bearings, super stiff, shifts excellently (see weakness).
Weaknesses:Shifts excellently ONLY if your bike is a 50mm chainline setup. My Cannondale is not, currently having to run the crank offset 5mm to the left (non-drive side) to make up for Shimano's stupid attempt to save on manufacturing, inventory, etc.
Similar Products Used:CODA 900M, 952 XTR, Coda Tarantula
Bike Setup:Cannondale w/ all XTR, UST Crossmax, and Magura Marta discs
Bottom Line:If you have a bike with a 50mm chainline, there is not a better crankset. If you don't, good luck getting it to shift off of the big ring to the middle (68mm shell w/ two spacers on drive side as Shimano recommends). I put one spacer on the drive and two on non-drive to achieve a 47.5mm chainline (this is how Cannondale is shipping their '03 bikes that are spec'd with this crank)and it shifts great but you definitely notice the odd spacing. I can't believe nobody has complained in their reviews of the F3000SL or the Scalpel 3000 on this site. It makes pedaling feel very odd. I currently have my crank up for sale on this site if anybody is interested. Thanks Shimano.

Purchased At:Larkfield Cycles
Strengths:Stiff, lightweight, wide bearing placement.
Weaknesses:Some say price, but a good quality ISIS crankset added to the cost of a decent ISIS bottom bracket costs about this sort of price (GB£300).

Service instructions non existant. My LBS think that Shimano intends these to be fitted by authorised dealers. My LBS mechanic was kind enough to let me have a look at their manual. A quick sketch of the layout was all I needed.
Similar Products Used:Shimano LX.
Bottom Line:My old LX crankset was suffering from big time chain suck even when clean, and the square taper was sitting slightly off-square. I considered going for an ISIS setup, better design than Shimano Octalink, but ISIS stuff isn't that common in the UK yet, and a decent chainset and BB is expensive. The mechanic at my LBS recommended the 2003 XTR set, at £300 I thought holy sh!t, but that's with an integrated BB, so it's not too bad, really. The integrated design gives the widest possible bearing placement (bearings are actually outside the BB shell), which improves stiffness, and allows a larger hollow axle to be used giving a significant weight reduction. It also fits 68mm or 73mm shells. A 68mm shell needs two 2.5mm spacers on the drive side, and one on the left. (Logic would dictate that only one would be needed on the drive side for a 73mm shell). The whole thing fits together very easily and very quickly. Shimano even give you the tool to install the bearing cups. The most time consuming bit is tightening the bolts on the LH crank arm. Both bolts have to be tightened evenly and equally (torque wrench needed), for obvious reasons.

The bearings are silky smooth, and shifting is extremely slick. I can't comment on long term durability yet, but I'll do a follow up post later.

All in, a revolutionary new design, which seems to have taken the best bits of all the technology around and improved on them some more.

If you want the best there is, you know what to do.

Bike Setup:Specialized Stumpjumper XTR
Bottom Line:Ok for starters this chainset is way lighter than any I have previously owned. But once off the scales I tried to fit it to my bike. Included were several spacers. I studied the instructions carefully for any reference to where these spacers should go. No mention in the text but I thought I could make them out on the diagram. As luck would have it I was right. However, the first time I tried to tighten them up I obviously hadn't alligned the plastic internal sleeve correctly so it buckled inside the BB and meant that when I turned the cranks everything was stiff. Ok this is sorted out now but if I can do it so can somebody else and it is not what you want when you have just shelled out £300.

However, once on the bike the cranks were noticably stiffer than anything I had previously ridden. This provided me with plenty on incentive to stomp on the pedal up every hill.

Also the shifting is always crisp and perfect even under load.

Yes, these cranks are expensive but there is nothing better in terms of performance and maintenance is simple. They also look pretty slick too!

Bottom Line:I was very much anticipating using these cranks. Shifting is usual Shimano excellence. I personally thought chainline is poor. However, because there is no choice for overall BB spindle length choice, if you want to adjust cranks for chainline all you can do is shift everything off center to the left. I would prefer a setup that can be tweeked even a little to accomodate different frames. Going back to 02 XTR, excellent product, less expensive, various BB's able to be used to get dialed in.

I have both cranks and now I can consolidate to one.
Excellent product and beautiful to look at. It is hard to imagine it is a hollow crank.

Extra carefull for installation by yourself.
I was told a lot of people make a BBL and spacer installation mistake. You may crash plastic inner tube by chosing wrong spacers and may damage the bearings.

Strengths:Slick shifting + motion when combined with other XTR components. Uniqueness for the time being. Weight. The envy of your buddies.
Weaknesses:Price obviously. Big corporation stigma. Your wallet nagging you as you abuse them with reckless abandon over those rocks. Having to buy your better half something equally expensive.

Bottom Line:Are these perfect? No. Mountain biking isn't a perfect science. Why else would nutters like us buy bikes and/or components costing thousands of dollars and then abuse them with nary a thought. Could BB could be better? Yes. Are they the slickest looking crankset? Yes. Do they work better than the Race Face Next LPs IMO? Yes. Are they overpriced IMO? Yes. Do you have to buy these? Hell no. However they work as well for me and that's all I could ask for. IMO you should buy what makes you happy because you'll ride better as a result.
