Forged and CNC machined heat treated aluminum shell with carbon reinforcement. Hallow tubular spider and removable, replaceable chainring tabs. PC = Powdercoat. This is the first crank to effectively interface the high impact strength of aluminum and the virtually infinite fatigue life of carbon fiber. Weight: 650g/1.43lb

Bottom Line:
I bought these when they just came out and have recently replaced them with XTR. The bottom braket has been replaced four times, because the bearings keep getting wasted, yes I lubed them with bearing grease and I ride Cross Country no drops. The bottom bracket would always require a second tightening after having been reassembled, I used a torque wrench but it wouldn't matter. The ISIS interface will loosen up if you have to take the cranks apart to replace the bottom brackets. The carbon fiber is a big marketing scam, it doesn't do anything and infact is only a few pieced that are glued into the cutouts. The chain rings were quickly, and they are not cheap. The first chain ring was defective (a rivit was installed to close to the edge causing a tooth to break off) I had to send Race Face the chain ring for Warranty, the whole process took approx. 3 months!! I bought a replacement so I could ride but what good is a warranty if you have to waint 3 months, good thing it wasn't a bad crank. Overall, I am very dissappointed. Race Face has already abandoned this technology it seems like they always copy Shimano but they cannot execute like the big S can. What really gets me is I spent over 300 dollars in bottom bracket replacements, I should have given up on Race Face a long time ago. Don't waste your money.

i broke the non-drive side crank 3 years ago... I've been riding it ever since, and never noticed the difference.
There are lot of little parts you have to take apart to de-grease and regrease after ever ride. Invest in a 5mm ratchet and a chainring bolt holder (the 2007 shimanos use a torx, while everone else still uses that wierd split screwdriver with a boston in the middle.) Anyways, invest int the right tools and everything will be a cinch.
I would rather rider FSA, Crank Bros, Next than shimano -- however, Shimano makes the best XTR crankset on the market now... hands down.
I want the little guy to get a cult following and win against the japanse tidal wave... but so far they've all left me wondering why their products even compete against shimano.
Maybe in the downhill market the crank bros will win... and maybe in the XC race dept the Race Face will win... But these guys (especially raceface and crank bros) need to make an exernal bearing set the exeeds all XTR metrics and is simpler to adjust and cheaper to replace parts on.
Japan -- I hope you get your ass kicked here. I've wanted American or Swedich cranks ever since redline flicht cranks dissappeared.

I want a crankset as simple as the Redline Flights at lower weight than the XTRS and at half the price. Am I asking too much? Or maybe just half the weight or profiles, but still accept a tripple.
Heck, I love the new XTRs so much if you made every ring out of Ti ad Carbon, I just buy abother set.

It was a 110x34t. Had to go salsa Race face does not make this size anymore. I lost a bolt also. I am on my third bottom bracket, second set of rims, fourth seatpost, and forgot how many chains and cassettes. I guess ISIS is superior but these taperlocks have stood the test of time. I have a feeling that I am going to have to upgrade when they stop making high end taper lock bottom brackets. When i do I will buy race face again.

I would buy more if I could find them, but would not suggest used ones unless I knew the age and history. Any part that lasts 5+ years on one of my bikes is quality.

Bottom Line:
Ths is my second review because I LOVE thse cranks! I swapped out my flexxy Synacros BB with a sexxy World Class Ti BB and I can detect very little flex (about the same as a good Isis setup)... They aren't as stiff as the new oubaord designs... but I enjoy not burning through BB cups, being able to adjust my chainline, and not having to buy new tools. I havent had a single squeek, grind, or wobble out of my crank setup. And I am a rider who mashes the pedals, and Ive broken nearly every crank Ive ever had! I've ridden these cranks everyday for the last 9 months. They refuse to fail! I love them so much I'm putting them on my touring bike this summer for a 1000 mile ride... Race Face needs to bring back these cranks! They are the BEST!!!!!

What's with the carbon "inserts" being decals?? When I purchased these cranks I was under the impression that the carbon bitties in the cranks went all the way through. Now, after a year of use, I've noticed the carbon bits are merely stickers that will peel off over time. Another posting below mentioned this - and I'm pretty sure they're not fakes! That aside, the cranks are brilliant and work well, but I'm a little "miffed" that I was a little misled!

From all the great things I have heard I have not put these on my bike yet, but there is a reason. Buyers beware.
Weaknesses:
I don't know if these are a knock off or these are what was manufactured from race face like this. If so It was a perfect job. The "Cabon Fiber Core" are stickers. The stickers are carbon, but they are only a couple of mm thick. Not incompassing the whole core of the crank. When I told bike mechanic freind that I got these cranks that I have wanted for ever he told me that all the next lp's he has worked on have all been stickers of carbon fiber were there should be a whole core. I was shocked, knowing the quality of my previous race face components in the past have always been very good. To my dismay, I went home and examined the pedals mo closely. Sure enough, the carbon on this pedals were indeed stickers! Bummer. anyhow hopefuly these are not what race face put out and these are fakes. but buyer beware and these people did a hell of a job making these look perfect.

So, be careful of these cranks. Needless to say I have not put these cranks on my bike as I have no idea if they will hold up to what the real cranks say they will do. Bottom Line:
As far as an XC crankset goes, this is the lightest and stiffest I've used. It is also one of if not the most expensive you can buy. If you are paying for it's looks, don't! The powdercoat and the decals will scuff off rather quickly when seriously used. I wanted to transfer my LP's from my aging hardtail to my new 5 Spot. That can only happen with new paint and decals. Go to Race Face's website - guess what - you cannot repaint (voids warranty) and Race Face won't do it for you, period! Wouldn't be cost-effective for them and all that good corporate nonsense. So I write RF and say that's fine, I'll repaint myself and take my chances without a warranty - if I send you a SASE and a few bucks can you send me a couple of new decals? RF actually tells me that they don't have any and no longer make them, and that I should check automotive stores. What!? Heads up people - the new RF Next LP's won't have the "Next Race Face Forged" decal on them anymore in 2005! No offense, but when a company tells me that they think I'm stupid and will believe anything they say, that's the last they'll see of my business. God help me if I ever need to warranty my cranks - RF will probably try and tell me they don't make them anymore. Crankset easily gets four or five chili's out the gate, but when the company treats you like that, three is the most it deserves. Since they only look good for the first year or two, cannot be restored in any manner, and god only knows if RF will honor warranty, only two for value.

These things rock the casbah. Stiffer than Elvis' corpse; super sexy looks; lifetime warranty; seemingly invincible. Oh, and the rings work beautifully too. My first set lasted almost 3 years of hard riding.
Too bad you need to ride faster than Mr. Overend on methamphetamine, crack and NyQuil to keep from being branded as a poser. I hate that.
Two complaints: #1. one must be very careful of what solvents get on the carbon and epoxy, as the wrong chemicals can ruin these cranks. Luckily, none of these compounds occur in nature, and the cranks actually seem to like mud. #2. The powdercoating and clearcoat kind of suck. At this price point, I had hoped the finish would be a bit more durable. Fortunately, scuffed gear helps ward off that poser label.
If you want faultless cranks that put the power to the dirt like nothing else, these are the answer. Bullseye cranks are as stiff and possibly even stronger, but bearing issues and the whole integrated BB thing make me skeptcal. Plus it appears they have gone out of business. The Ritchey Logic cranks (nice low Q-factor -thanks Tom) were nice, but not as stiff as I would like. Even the RF Turbine LP wasn't as still as the Next. Our winner...

I bought my Next LP cranks last year. I rode them hard and must say they are the most impressive cranks I've ever felt. There is a big difference between the LP's and the NEXT LP's as far as stiffness goes. They are just sweet cranks!!
THE BEST FEATURE I MUST SHOUT OUT IS RACEFACE'S CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!
About a month ago, anxious to go riding, I went for a cruz and my left crank arm fell off!! This was totally my fault though! I just put my bike together and went for a short ride, and didn't think about retorquing the crank bolts during the ride; while cruzing up a ridge the left arm fell off! I couldn’t even feel it come loose?!
This little incidence ruined the crank arm and it never stayed tight again.
I sent them up to RaceFace and the dudes up there hooked me up with a whole new crankset!! Even though they said the cause of it is NOT covered under warranty!! GOT TO LOVE THAT CUSTURMER SERVICE ;)
I guess that's what you pay for. Support and appreciate RaceFace components!
*Note to all: Always retorque or check your crank bolts after a short ride after installing them.

I have upgraded every upgradeable component on my Enduro over the winter without regard to price in anticipation of the new season. Of all the components I have added, the best purchase was the Raceface cranks. I couldn't believe how light they were when they came out of the box. Once I put them on I noticed a dramatic difference in the stiffness and strength of the crankset. I don't know what else to say besides if you make one upgrade on your bike replace your crankset with Raceface Next.

Very strong and efficient. It really made a difference after upgrading from the Bontrager's that came with my bike. Just for the steep climbs it was worth every penny. I don't give a hoot either way, but I admit they look pretty darn good on the bike. Was pissed at the dorks at my bike shop, so I bought online for a fraction of it's worth.
Weaknesses:
I have not found it, other than the full MSRP on these suckas.

Bottom Line:
Buy it from your bikeshop if you want to invest in your future bike riding happiness. If not, go to Ebay and compare the 2003 XTR to the Next LP, and buy whichever is cheaper (and relatively new). In that scenario, you will buy a NextLP.

Bottom Line:
My comments are primarily on their customer service, which is key when I'm paying serious cash for a crankset. I sent my tapered Next LP cranks back due to constant creaking. Before shipping, I had tried flip-flopping these cranks and my Turbine cranks with my RF Ti and Chromo BBs... but still had creaking in the Next LPs. I even made the mistake of hoping overtightening would do the trick. Needless to say, my overtightening voided the warranty, as I found out after I sent the cranks back. I completely understood and sent an email reply asking that my cranks be shipped back and a confirmation when they were shipped. More than a month passed with no response. So I sent another email and heard nothing for another few weeks. Finally on the third email, which wasn't as nice as the first two, I got a response the next day from the folks in British Columbia with an apology and a deal I couldn't refuse on a discounted upgrade to ISIS cranks and BB. From an overall rating of one chili to five chilis in one 5 minute phone call... great job Raceface!!!

Yes I know, all you XC racers are going to click your tounges at me. I ride Mountaincross and hardtail downhill, and i only got the cranks becouse if i do snap/bend them they have a lifetime warranty! They are stiff as all buggery, beutifully machined and dont have any creaking or flexing. Even taking high as 14 foot drops, and eight foot to flat drops, they have held up very well. The Racerings (i run triples) are so well machined and gear shifting is silent and sexy.

These are really nice, and have had my friends and other racers taking their eyes off the trail and onto my cranks! These are really gnarly, and i would reccomend you get the splined compact version. Oh, and to add the cheery on top, they have a replacable spider! Given the fact that i had these on my bedside table too look at before i went to bed and when i woke up for a few days, i lit five flamin chillis for overall, and sparked up another five crispy ones for value, though if they had no lifetime warranty, i would not have even thought about using them.

This is by far the best crank out there, it look way better than an XTR, it is stiffer and lighter as well. The shifting is super crisp and precise. The transfer of power is flawless wich is very important for those out of the saddle sprints. Mine doesn't make any noise as well. Some may argue that it is quite pricey but then again so is a Ferarri... The best always come at a premium, that way you can add a unique touch to your bike (let's be honnest how many people will have that crank???), I can't give it a 5 chilis for overall rating because the new desing (splined) is stiffer thus better but it is an extremly solid 4.9999 chilis.

Bottom Line:
The best you can ever own, period. A lot of reviewers compare this baby with the XTR crankset often times saying that the XTR is lighter...first of all, the XTR crankset alone is heavier than the XT, but is more durable. Second the Next LP is lighter than the XT, get the point? (I used to work in a high performance bicycle factory so I can tell you that this is an actual fact).
Moreover, the Next LP comes with a lifetime warranty whereas XTR comes with a 1 year warranty. along with good looks this should make you consider buying a next LP crankset instead.
Now the facts: The Next LP crankset is stiff as concrete, yet incredibly light. These cranks replace a Bontrager racelite and believe me this is a great relief. I will certainly have to ride more to confirm stiffness though. I have been more impressed by shifting precision; the response is fast and silent, both upshifting and downshifting and the increase in load doesn't seem to influence that (and I have very strong legs). The price could be an issue but usually you must pay for a lifetime warranty...Finally, the most beautiful crankset around, I have the white one and with the white decals on my bike it really looks awesome.

I tried to do the fine tuning but I couldn't get it right. I started to join the band wagon with the other reviewers and started to blame the rings. I took it to my local LBS to have the problem diagnosed. Problem: my current BB was too wide. I had 113's and the mechanic suggested that I switch to 110's. The new crankset change my chainline. Man, the difference was like night and day!!!! The shifting is now crisp, quick, and no drag. Had to replace my old BB which was also Race Face with a Shimano BB (that's all he had on stock). The cranks would have gotten a perfect 5 terds but I had to spend more dead presidents to get the proper allignment. My old BB is now a fancy paper weight. Oh well......

Bottom Line:
The Next LP's came on my Turner (slightly used) and I thought I'd give them a try. They are light, stiff, good looking, but sort of uninspiring otherwise. Shifting was kind of dead, and at first there was a little chain-suck, both on the up and down shifts. I measured the chain for stretch with a park chain checker, but it was fine. I finally got an isis bb tool (and no, the Park tool does not work with RF isis), switched back to XTR, mainly out of curiosity of comparison, and was pretty blown away at how much better the Shimano's shifted. Considering that the RF's cost more than XTR's, it seems like a no brainer. The only reason I really wanted to keep the Next LP's was because I wanted to be able to run some reasonably priced chainrings. Oh well. Three flaming cats for value (more expensive but inferior? Come on). Four for overall (high zoot factor, light, stiff, pretty).

Bottom Line:
I love these cranks. Never before have I been able to crank and go like I do with these babies. I never have to worry about over-tightening or maladjusting the chainline if I have to pop them off: just torque them back down until they hit the stops on the bottom bracket. As a reviewer below said, they're so stiff that on the road I can feel the road vibrating back through the cranks and into my feet, even on dual-suspension. I *never* hear the chain rubbing the front derailleur in a way that would indicate lateral flex, and I weigh anywhere from 180-205, depending upon the time of year. I also love to honk out of the saddle, so stiffness is a big issue with me.
I bought these over XTR for three reasons: 1) XTR replacement chainrings are insanely expensive, 2) I have doubts about the long-term lateral stiffness of a 4-arm chainring spider, and 3) I wanted to be able to run a 20-tooth bailout granny for the super-steep climbs that are all over the East Bay here. I truly believe you get what you pay for with these cranks and, especially for you heavier guys, it'd be tough to find something better, although if I were more budget-minded I would've bought the Turbines over the XTs.

They definitely do get nicked as does any crank under hard xc use. I do not consider this a deficiency, rather expected normal wear. These are good performance cranks, but are not worth the $$. Not that I am all caught up on looks, but there is NO REASON the paint should be chipping off a very expensive crankset during normal XC riding. The only way you can make sure that they do not look like they've been through a war zone is by keeping the bike in your basement forever. I am also not a big fan of this company's customer service, as I have had problems with a past RF crankset that were a pain to get fixed/replaced.
If you are some rich kid who wants to be a show-off by having a super-expensive crank that looks pretty, better keep away, it will get thrashed easily in the looks department. If you don't care if you spent alot of $$ for and beat-up looking cranks, then go for it....the performance is there, no question about it.
I just wonder about the quality of the rest of the product when they can't get the paint to stay on....

The chain travels perfectly onto the rings and doesn't fall off of the rings.Been a year and still haven't worn the rings out but I am getting close. The colors are awsome and can get it to match any bike. The Next LP is a must for any bike and a rider of any level can enjoy this product. When it comes to cranks there is no other.

Bottom Line:
I was skeptical as to the actual stiffness of these cranks until I put them on and dropped a curb- it hurt! I was very surprised at the increase in power transfer over my White Industries cranks. These cranks are so stiff that I now notice every little but of flex in my frame because I am so well connected to the bike. These are especially great for those of us who do not spin perfectly- as a stomper I really appreciate the amazing power transfer that these cranks provide. These cranks are the best out there. period. If you can get a set for cheap, or if you are willing to shell out some serious cash for the best components, get these.

This crank isn't as light as the XTR, I'll admit that. But it is stiffer, looks better, and will last longer. Carbon holds up much longer under stress that fatigues aluminum.... It is pricey, but I think that it is one of the most important parts on your bike next to your frame and wheels. This is the best product that I've tried, frankly, all of the raceface stuff is as good as anything I've tried... except the Chris King is still the headset king!

These are nice stiff cranks that work quite well.
With the carbon inserts, you have to be careful not to get lube or degreaser on them. Given that their close proximity to the chain, this is a limitation that worries me. But, since I use a dry lube and switched to simple green to clean the chain, I (hopefully) won't have any problems!
It took a lot of torque to get them to seat on the Race Face XS bottom brackets, and at first they creaked a bit and took several torque checks over the first 200 miles or so before they seated. But, now they're quiet and tight :).
If it were not for the limited selection of ISIS bottom brackets (all seem to be 113 mm which is a little too narrow for my Jekyll -- see my review of Race Face XS BB), I'd be really happy.

Bottom Line:
It's stiff. Stiffer than all get out. It was stiffer than splined-XTR even before it came out on ISIS. Ditto the price. Now it's even stiffer. I could feel it in my hands before it went on the bike, when I was riding it in the store, and then of course on the trail. The power transfer is amazing, but even more than that is how well I can feel what's going on in my frame moment to moment. I know where the suspension and rear tire are and how they're reacting to what they're on and where they're going. Amazing? yes. Necessary? no. Comparable power transfer can be had with Turbines or XTR. (Don't get XTR, though. Given the new LX and XT spline format, I think the current XTR spline's days are numbered.) The cranks I had on before were old LX that I was using temporarily until ISIS became available. They didn't feel anywhere near as good, but if I were to actually calculate the difference in power transfer, I don't think it would be more than 6%. You can see I have a whole bunch of chichi awesome wild badass stuff on my bike, almost all of which I feel was great and justified. These NEXT cranks are the first thing I've gotten where the performance is actually better than I need. Which is great, and it's not that I could possibly mind or anything. But I have to acknowledge I could have gotten Turbines and been just about as happy. Earlier this week I rode up "Team Big Bear" and "Tour de Suds" in Park City. It's one of my favorite rides and, until this time, it was one of only two that required that I use my granny. This time I never left my middle chainring (part of why I can't comment on the shifting yet). I'm in no better shape now than last season; in fact I hadn't done any serious riding in a couple of weeks. But every pedal stroke on those NEXT cranks just charged me up those hills, yanking at my inner narcissist. I pedaled through every technical area with some sort of ethereal ease. I usually miss at least one. It's hard to believe that all that difference could be the cranks, but who knows. They were the final missing link of my dream bike, and now that I have it I don't know what to do. There need to be help sessions for people like me.

I echo previous complaints about shifting: no problems on my first ride, but now the upshift under power to the middle ring requires pushing beyond the index stop on my XTR shifter. Ramps on the ring must have placement issues. With what you pay for these things, that's not value for money, but performance is otherwise solid.

Shifting is 99% of shimano's, but replacement rings are much cheaper and longer lasting than XTR cheese wheels!

Neither rings shift as nice as any Shimano rings. The cranks are nice to look at but the installation instructions from RF for these say that if you want to clean you chainrings with solvent or degreaser (who doesn't) you should take the rings off the crankset!? Solvent will cause the carbon fibre to separate and come out of the aluminum shell. Well if I had done my research I would have opted for another set of turbines since they have no degreaser issues and I have cleaned the rings on those cranks without a problem. Nice cranks but keep the solvent away and they hopefully will remain nice. I cut up some old inner tubes and wrapped them around the crank-arms to keep the solvent away when cleaning the chainrings. Works so far.

Purchased At:

Strengths:
Very light and stiff, no flex whatsoever. Look cool. Power transfer frightening.
Weaknesses:
So expensive (esp. UK prices); frightened of damaging them.
Similar Products Used:
XT
Bike Setup:
Trek OCLV Y-bike, URT. Z2 bombers, Fox Air Float RC rear shock. Mavic x618 rims and hope hubs, otherwise all XTR. Race Face cranks and rings.
Bottom Line:
Where other components are concerned, there's always pros and cons and we can argue forever about what is best - one fork v. the next, which brakes are better, etc. However, where the Next LP cranks are concerned, no one can really argue if they've got any knowledge of MTB - these are definitely the best for XC use. If you can afford them, get them! Nothing comes close. I find the RF rings are good in the English mud - others use XTR.

Bottom Line:
Great crank and super stiff. Mated to the Klein frame it means instant power...nothing gets lost in the frame or cranks...bottom line is I am out of excuses. I got the cranks at a steal due to shop discount and a gift certificate. I never would have spent full boat on these things. If I had to spend full retail than I would recommend the Race Face LP crank long before forking out the cash for the Next LP.

These cranks are worth the money. They are strong, light, and no flexing under power. I ride hard and have had no problems. My friend had a demo pair of these cranks before they produced them and his set broke in two. Race Face said they were not designed to be ridden on yet, just a manufacturer's demo. I was glad to see when they did come out that they are strong and no flex, I was worried. The Race Face chain rings that came with these cranks however have been troublesome. These cranks are expensive but worth the price.

this is an update review from below. The extra money that your paying for, isn't worth it. I worked at a bike shop, so i got the hookup. It was worth it for me b/c i didn't pay $350. This crankset isn't worth $350. For the avg. Joe, there's no noticeable difference than a xtr, xt(just lighter). The only difference is the cool factor. The rings shift as good as shimano. If you don't have the money to buy the next lp, don't fret b/c you're not missing anything.

I decided to review this product because it made me started liking my bike again, I started hating my bike because of the lousy Bontrager crank that was constantly giving me problems I changed it to an LX and still was not happy and now with the Race Face my bike now kicks ass! very stiff, light, no flex, bought in with Standard rings and what a difference! I thought I was crazy at first spending the money on this crankset, but now after putting it on my bike, it's worth every dime! Got the cash, buy it! I got mine for a good deal so I'm rating giving it 5 chills!

These are nice cranks. The Turbines have a better warranty tho. RF needs to come out with their Universal Spline standard BB so I can get these cranks!
Downside: Like I said no splined BB, which makes your complete non Ti BB and Next set up heavier than good ol' XTR.
Take away one coz the old RF crank had a better warranty, then take away anuther one coz of the lack of splined BB option.

The power is right there with zero flex. I weigh iin at 225 after gaining 35lbs from an injury. Have had no problems with this crank. Shifts great with the Gripshift/XT mix. 4 Stars just because they cost so much.

Bottom Line:
You will notice a difference in the way your bike accelerates & climbs, the very first time you ride with this crankset. The rings shift better than the stock Icon rings that my bike was spec'd with. When you put the hammer down, out of the saddle, this crank really performs. I had my doubts about the durability of the carbon composite, prior to purchasing the crank. Since getting the crankset installed, I been on 8 good, hard rides. I've really given this crank a workout, and I no longer have any doubts. Even though this crankset can be as expensive as some entry-level steel frame mountain bikes, its really worth the investment if you have a high-end machine.

Well this is my first replacement crank and rings in a couple of years. I am a little disappointed in how long it is taking to dial this setup in. I have the Next LP crankset with RaceFace rings. I am currently on my second chain to try and limit the chatter. And also am still trying to get it to work better with my XT rear derailer and XTR cassette.
But, I still feel OK about the purchase because of the shifting. It has decreased the shift time in both upshift and downshift...
Lower the price guys and you might have a winner...

-Strong and awesome looking -Your wife will leave you if you tell her how much you paid for them. -you get what you pay for which is a high performance crankset that you'll never have to worry about
Weaknesses:
-ridiculous price to pay for cranks -Your wife will leave you if you tell her how much you paid for them. -they make you overconfident - make sure your drive train can handle the torque! (that includes #$%#% bottom bracket) -it's true about paint wear, but it's not too bad and should integrate nicely into a properly abused machine....
Bike Setup:
Gary Fisher Supercaliber, XT, XTR, Raceface, Z2 Bombers, etc.
Bottom Line:
After your divorce settlement and support payments you won't be able to afford to ride anymore even though you'll have more time so you'll sell the cranks for 1/4 what you paid and re-install an old crank and never enjoy riding as much again so don't get them because you'll never want to run another crankset after running these. If you don't care for comments on your bike from total strangers don't get these. It's crazy to pay this much for cranks, and by the time I pay off my credit they'll be double (I'm still paying for most of my other components)but I don't regret the purchase for a second. I'm confident they will last and outperform anything else I could have purchased. A small price for that kind of peace of mind? All depends on your priorities, and obviously don't have any......
