Strengths:    It's drop dead gorgeous

Weaknesses:    So pretty I don't want to use it.

Bottom Line:
The prettiest machined crank ever. It works great too but, in this case, form trumps function. It's that nice.

Dear
Reader

This review is for the ICON Graphite Crank-Set. I ride (10+) in mud, sand, and water. From 0 to 100 degrees, which is common in the North East.

I currently own mid-line Bontrager and Shimano crank-sets on my Trek 4500 and Trek 4900, which have served me well. The STP 200 is a higher grade offering, hence the addition of the ICON Graphite crank-set by Trek. In addition, ICON components have also graced the Klein line for quite sometime.

This a very good product offering, and will provide STP 200 and STP 300 owners with many years of use without problems. If you need a more robust product, then go for Shimano XTR or the high-end Race Face offerings. The ICON Graphite Series offers light-weight at low cost, but it is not meant to go head-to-head with the afore-mentioned high-end product offerings. On a final note, Trek did send the STP 400 off with a Shimano XTR Crank/BB, so I guess that is where the path leads.

Sincerely
Russ

Strengths:
Best CNC machined design on the market, strong, great warranty, removeable spider

Weaknesses:
Not forged

Bottom Line:
These cranks are the best cranks i've ever used other than the fact their very easy to over torqhue, so I recommend using a torqhue wrench when installing.

Strengths:
Stiff, goregous, interchangable spiders

Weaknesses:
not compatible with XTR BB (yet)

Bottom Line:
Ionic has done a great job on these, as they have on their frames. Their craftsmanship is flawless. I think Ionic is one of the best small house frame builters and CNC shops out there, and they stand behind their stuff. I've turned into a pimp for these guys

Strengths:
Beautifully made!
Gorgeous!
Stiff!

Weaknesses:
None

Bottom Line:
Not the lightest cranks (a few grams heavier than LP's) but who cares: exclusive (though not expensive), stunning looks, stiffer than your legs after a long ride...
The only cranks I have ridden that people comment (highly positively) on!

Strengths:
Stiffist I've ever tried.
Prettyist I've ever seen.

Weaknesses:
Occasional creaking, but that is just because of the BB I am using, nut just the crank.
Not the cheapest crank availabe, but definitly worth it!

Bottom Line:
stiffest crank I have ever tried, more so than that of a RaceFace. Prettest Ive ever seen with all that beautiful machining. Not the cheapest, but definetly worth it.
I have is set up with a 48 tooth single chainring for ultimate hardcore singletrack!

I have owned both raceface, and the billy. The Billy is actualy stiffer! It's hard to belive but very true, plus- these even look better!

Bike Setup:
I have The Billy set up with a single 48tooth chainring and MRP guide. This is not for DH racing, but for just all out, hardcore singletrack.

Ionic Billy Crank: Info? Super cool CNC design

Hi! I just scored this sick crankset that appears to be an Ionic Billy. There's barely any info on the web about them. MTBR has a listing with no picture, and says they were made early 2000's and amazingly stiff. Perhaps they're the same company as Ionic Bikes, who were associated with Dean. Has any ... Read More »

Billy Koitzsch rulz!

I'm not sure if this ride is epic enough for this board these days, but Billy Koitzsch is probably 4 or 5 hours away from riding into Fairbanks to complete his roughly 2,000 mile ride from Big Lake to Nome to Fairbanks. He's gonna come in around 6 weeks, plus or minus a day or so, and minus about 4 ... Read More »
