I ride aggressive all mountain and have broken every shimano I have purchased.
Sometimes it's just bodily damage that occurs, other times, one pin will pop, leaving a plate 1/2 attached, the loose end will catch on the derailleur arm, and break the derailleur and bend the hanger.
Connex chains slightly heavier, but never breaks.

Been XC riding since 2000, probably purchased 8-10 of these chains in that time and have only had one fail by breaking and from what I remember, it failed where I joined it after installation. I must not have set the pin correctly. These chains are stong and if maintained properly (occasionally clean and lubricate) will last until stretched and in need of replacement. Now if you dont maintain, clean occasionally and lubricate, then maybe they will break. Never tried this, so I dont know for sure.

Havent found one yet, even the price is reasonable for what you are getting - worry-free riding.

Buy it if you dont want to worry about one of the most important drivetrain components.

Mud will cause minor problems but a quick squirt from the camelbak and it's good again.

I've put on over 1000km on this chain. I used oil in the rain and wax during the dry season. This was used on a new XT cassette and the cassette still looks good as well. I ordered the same chain to save the cassette and another hassel free 1000km. Most of the mileage is x country with hard climbs and some technical rides.

I read an aweful lot of reviews here where people say that this chain broke suddenly. I'm 43 years old and have been riding and racing mountain bikes since I was 28 and I never ever had a chain break.


I wonder if the reason why there seems to be only broken chained reviewers here is because people who don't break their chains find no reason to post about it?

I think these chains all broke as a result of user error.

Lightweight, smooth shifts

Snaps. It snapped on the FIRST RIDE.

Do NOT get this chain. It snapped for me on the first ride and I am not putting it back on. I put load on it on flat terrain and it snapped. Pure crap.

Light, Relatively rust free.

Snap all the time.

Avoid this. It's not even that light and snaps all the time. I didn't believe it and bought 3 more. Not just me but my friends' snapped as well. Changed to YBN (Yaban) Titanium chains that are way lighter probably 3x stronger and never rust + self-lubricates. The XTR is junk, I wouldn't use it even if given free.

light, but now i know why it is light coz its made of crap!

CRAP! PURE CRAP! bought it last week, and already got cut twice! once on the trail during the weekend and just now biking around my village.. INSIDE the VILLAGE! CRAP!

i will never buy this piece of CRAP ever! want my SRAM back even if it is a bit heavier, it never failed me! Don't make the mistake of buying this CRAP just becoz its XTR.

shifts well

low durability, snaps often in rocky terrain, will almost always snap if you shift poorly (under heavy load)

for the money, just skip it and get a more durable chain. i ride pretty aggressively and race occasionally, primarily in the Appalachains. even on brand new cassette and rings, this chain snapped 4 or 5 times in two years of low-mileage riding. granted, some of them were sloppy adrenaline-fueled shifts while racing, but other times the chain just snapped randomly while pedaling along a trail. i used the special replacement pin each time, but once the chain had been spliced together, it began to skip during normal shifts and generally isnt worth the headache.

the good news is that it is very rust resistant, but i think i will try a SRAM 991 Cross-Step next time i replace my rings.

Narrow, shifts easily.

Fragile, snaps easier than it shifts! The first one snapped three times (chain was 6 months old). Made the mistake to buy another one and it snapped in the first ride twice in different links.

This chain is too weak for trail riding. I am 5'8" 160 lbs. and for the "climbing" in Florida which is short, steep hills, where you need a lot of power this chain is NO good!
