Favorite Trail:poto
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $50.00
Purchased At:online
Strengths:light weight
Weaknesses:durability
Similar Products Used:sram 99
Bike Setup:xt, sid race, thompson elite, fsa cranks, raceface comp, WTB saddle
Bottom Line:seems to be designed for a <160lb rider who does a lot of flat single track, I am not this rider. I will say that I still have not found the ideal chain but I do know that where I like to ride, super light is not advised.

Strengths:light + strong + very intelligent design.
the TiN coating on my SL version seems to help maintain them.
great/reliable concise shifting even under full spazz power.
after paying for the X9 SL chain - i can't help but spend more time looking after my drivetrain (which is a good thing!)
they are as durable, if not more durable than SRAM PG990's.
Weaknesses:TiN coating on the rollers appears to wear off in less than 8 miles, works extra great though in those 8 miles.
TiN gold coating is abit blingy/tacky.
chain might be easier to stretch than other lesser brands if you totally mess up your shifting quite often.
the chains open SL design seems to collect more dirt than any other i've used, on occasion.
Similar Products Used:SRAM PG990 hollow pin, SRAM PG960, XTR M965
Bike Setup:S-Works, KMC X9 SL, Schmolke, Syntace, Marta Magnesium, Race King Supersonic, SLR Carbonio Flow, 4Ti, XTR, SRAM X.O
Bottom Line:if you don't mind taking alittle more care of your drivetrain - these chains are the best.

...this review is for the 08 KMC X9 SL chain...

5 flamin' chili's for value - if you can nab it for less than MSRP.

Date Reviewed: September 14, 2008
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:Sparkly gold colour
Weaknesses:Didnt work like it should
Similar Products Used:Shimano HG/ IG chains, SRAM, etc.
Bike Setup:Rockhopper rpo 2009
Bottom Line:This chain came with my new bike, and I thought it looked a bit uber-bling (naff). However, I thought I'd give it a go - and most of the time I'm riding it would be covered in crud anyway.

After about a week (from brand new) I noticed an ominous clunking that I thought was bottom bearing, returned to LBS who "did lots of checks" and decided it was a defective chain. Put a Shimano HG on, and all's perfect again. Now thyey might ahev done something sneaky and tightened up bottom beairng, or re-torqued the cranks, but I trust them reasonably well and if they say it was the chain then for me it was the chain.

Maybe just a bad one in the bunch, but LBS also says that they don't rate the KMC chains and don't stock them

Price Paid: $45.00
Purchased At:universalcycles.com
Strengths:very light. nice color.
Weaknesses:stretches within 100 miles of use. very expensive.
Similar Products Used:Shimano XTR, KMC X9 regular
Bike Setup:'07 ASTA Expert X9 pimped out
Bottom Line:this review goes for the super light version of the KMC x9...horrible chain...dont dare to buy it!!! i was very sad i had to purchase a new chain within a week or a bit more of use...i guess i should have followed other fellow members advise...sometimes light wont be the best way...dont go the light way on chains because theres lots of tension and stretching..stick with XTR!

Date Reviewed: December 31, 2007
Favorite Trail:Razorback RIP/Santos
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $30.00
Purchased At:local bike shop
Strengths:Has not broken; quick link. No chain suck in the rain/mud.
Weaknesses:Stretched 50% of useful life in one month of cross country riding, two races.
Similar Products Used:Shimano Dura Ace 9 speed
Bike Setup:Santa Cruz Blur XT/XTR (non-rapid rise), Fox RLT 100, RP3, Avid mech disc w/ Shimano rotors, Mavic 819 XT center lock, Thomson stem/seatpost, Time ATAC pedals, IRC Mythos UST F/R
Bottom Line:Thought I would try something different as was getting occasional chain suck with Dura Ace chain, this chain became noisy chain after a few rides. Took bike in for tuneup after the last race and the gauge read 50% worn after one month of cross county riding/racing. My previous XTR/Dura ace chain lasted two years so I don't think I am too hard on drivetrain. Was cleaned and installed professionally, lubed with White Lightening each time out, won't buy another one for XC anyway. Back to Dura Ace for me.

Strengths:kmc 9 speed silver sl :

very light , very smooth and slick. haha fun to play with like a slinky! i use this with my xtr rear mech and dura ace ...real nice, best feel i've had on a bike.

Weaknesses:hard to say - been using it for over 7 months (not sure how many miles) i ride every day for about 5 miles average.
i should have replaced it a few months back. well. i just re-ordered a new one.
Similar Products Used:shimano and sram. but the kmc is for sure my fave.
Bike Setup:tune, mavic , x ray , giant.
Bottom Line:if you want light weight, smooth gear changes and can afford this chain, buy one + enjoy it.

best place to buy at present . either ebay , starbike.com(slow delivery)

around £ 30 is a good price at present.
