Bottom Line:When I read the first 10 reviews I thought to myself...Do any of these ppl do any of thier own maintenance on thier bikes other than change a tire? Granted it does take a little work, but if you want this to work and work well, replace the bolts, nuts and bearings before you even install it. Honestly there are just some frames that it just wont work on, but after making the proper modifications ($15 worth). It works like something that you'd probably pay 3-4x as much for! Read the reviews and learn from other's mistakes $30 is nothing for how effective it will be afterwards. I ride here in miami,fl and its not but roots and rocks and cause parts to go back prematurely from chain suck

Bike Setup:1992 Trek 950 singlespeed conversion
Bottom Line:I bought the Chain Reactor to run my old Trek as a singlespeed commuter. On this old steel frame with small, slightly oval chainstays, the KORE fits pretty easily. I had read the mtbr reviews that said it doesn't fit some frames, so out of curiosity I tried it on my XC FS bike which has a carbon AMP rear end. There is no way it would ever fit the large rectangular carbon chainstay. Never. On the Trek, I just put it where the chainline dictated and put a piece of inner tube under it to keep it from slipping. I don't ride the Trek in sand or mud so I expect it will be virtually maintenance-free.

Weaknesses:it barly is able to fit on the chainstay. Its not exactly the right shape for it. it swivels way to much from where the arm meets the clamp.

Bottom Line:So far i have had no problems with this peice. Iv been doing FR on my XC bike and needed somthing to keep my chain in place cause it bounced off track on hits. ONe of the best things on my bike. Pays for its self too. dont have to buy new deraulers

Weaknesses:Could not install on my Enduro. Chainstays are too big.
Similar Products Used:Still looking.
Bike Setup:Specialized Enduro with expensive aftermarket parts, rendering it even heavier.
Bottom Line:Why, oh why didn't I consult the reviews here? It's only when I received the unit and realized there were no instructions that I Googled. That only brought me back here, and after seeing the reviews, that saved me from expecting too much. I Googled again and found the instructions on Kore's site. I tried to install the unit, but quit after a few minutes, realizing it was going to be futile.

What size hex do they use? It's not on my bike tool or in my regular toolbox. They wouldn't have used American sizing, would they? That would be pretty stupid.

But not as stupid as me for buying this thing without consulting MTBR. I'm sending it back. I hope.

Strengths:Damn cheap...seriously wondered if it would work at that price. Seems to be holding up so far and haven't lost my chain yet...I think I got my $13.00 worth!!!
Weaknesses:Had to replace pretty much all the hardware that it came with. I replaced the stock nuts with self-locking nylon nuts and had to get longer bolts for my chain-stay...why didn't it come with longer bolts? Who has a bike with that narrow of a chain stay that the stock bolts would fit on? Took a while to get it setup right and a lot of patience...

Date Reviewed: April 2, 2002
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $29.00
Strengths:Seems to work
Well made
Fairly inexpensive
Weaknesses:Difficult to install
Chainstay clamp too narrow
Supplied bolts too short
Needs constant maintenance (tightenting)
Similar Products Used:None
Bike Setup:2002 Norco Launch
Bottom Line:Bought this device so I could have access to middle and small rings, while tensioning the chain on big-ring DH runs. Extremely difficult to install - forget about using the stock bolts, go get a handful of longer ones before you even start. The chainstay clamp has to be mounted behind the arc of the crank arm, or you run the risk of the arm hitting the clamp. The clamp itself is too narrow - even with the bolts tightened to within a hair of thread failure, the clamp rotates on the chainstay.

This device works on the bikestand with the bolts tightened, but if the chainstay clamp/pulley arm fixing bolt loosens, or the clamp rotates on the chainstay, shifting the chain to the big ring will push the pulley arm out into the crank arms' path, crushing the arm between the crank and frame. Ouch.

Bottom line - this unit is okay for DH racing, where you check your bike after every run, but not for everyday use. Too bad - with a little more engineering, it could be a winner.

Bottom Line:I use this product for single speed conversion. It mounted in 5 minutes, and stayed tight with piece of rubber wrapped around the chainstay. I slightly modified it by flipping the guide upside down so that the chain was pulled away from the chainstay, then I increased the tension to the max setting. I positioned it so that it was slightly closer to the rear cog. The chain nice and tight and hasnt derailed yet. It was hard to find to find chain tensioners at the bike stores, I guess they are not really in demand. I didnt want to use the derilure (not sure how to spell) because it doesnt look clean. Good for single speed conversions.

Bottom Line:When I first installed this I was going to kill someone or the chain reactor. It wouldn't fit around my rear fork, but I really wanted it on there. So I drilled a small hole through the frame and mounted it directly to the frame. It didn't work at first; kept making the rear and front derailleurs jump gears. I cursed, threw tools, and the reactor.
The next day I signed on here and noticed people said to get it very tight. I went back to the bike tightened the screw through the frame into the reactor as tight as it would go. Works great now! A little noisy, but worth it.

Bottom Line:If you can't install it just be honest and go to the shop like I did. I paid an additional 10 in labor to have him wrap the lower arm in an old bike grip and use longer screws (applying his knowledge to the problem) and it worked GREAT. Just ripped it off the frame on a huge rock this weekend but up till then it's worked wonderfully (tore the chain in half and almost broke the frame if that helps). I am buying a replacement kore reactor as I use three gears + outside bash guard and love to jump off stuff. This chain tensioner when installed correctly works just great. Honestly what are all the other great choices? Looked to me like the MRP Recon was $120 and I lost my big gear. Seems like some of you didn't get it installed right. That's a bummer as it does work just killer like you thought when you purchased it......the application just wasn't correct.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $16.00
Purchased At:eBay
Strengths:Laser-etched logo, WAY cooler than derailleur-type tensioners,
simplicity of unit
Weaknesses:Noisy, despite Kore's claims of quietness due to neoprene wheel. Neoprene maybe, quiet...NOT...will hafta try the inner tube trick from below. Tough to get in the right spot. Not much clearance from 1.9 Specialized Team tire.
Similar Products Used:Shimano Altus
Shimano LX
Shimano XT
Bike Setup:1990 Trek 930...single speed. Fully rigid, OLD school DiaCompe canitlevers (from about 1985-MAFAC style), LX hubs/el-cheapo, double-wall Weinmann rims, some rubber thrown on for traction, LX cranks. I have two setups...36/17, and 32/15.
Bottom Line:I bought this for a single speed conversion on a frame with vertical dropouts. I had used all of my spare derailleurs and was not satisfied with them, maybe because of the 'geared' look it added to the simplistic SS. It took quite a time to find the best spot for mounting, then it hits the chain a little off-kilter. It is rather loud, when compared to a derailleur. I find this product to work very well on this pretense...since it 'tightens' toward the chainstay, you MUST already have your drivetrain adjusted almost perfect...for a SS anyway. It will NOT adjust for a longer chain like a derailleur-type chain tensioner, at least for a SS. I think that it works fine for me, and no one who rides a SS around here has one, so there is always a fanfare of 'does it work?', 'cool tensioner', 'why only one speed'. If you can buy it for less than the $39 MSRP, buy it, you'll like it.

Weaknesses:Probably has to be modified for just about everyone's bike
Bike Setup:Random GT hardtail, XTR shifter/brake levers (gotta love good brakes), XTR/XT drive, storm control rear tire for all the damn rain we get here, blah blah
Bottom Line:This product works.
If you have half a brain, you will realize that MOST of the bad reviews this product has received are either from people who did not read or comprehend the installation instructions (check out the kore website--there are even pictures, dood) or complete idiots. (remember i said most) Some modification will probably be necessary--i just had to get longer bolts.
I am a pretty avid XC rider, and i take the bike out about 3 times a week and thrash on it. I regularly take 3+ foot drops with this product, and it has never failed to retain my chain through all the trauma that would previously drop my chain to the inside about 5 times every ride (yeah, my front derailleur was adjusted correctly)and it really quieted my chain down.
For the weight and price, this product rocks! If you have a really fat chainstay though, or are a 7-foot-drop downhiller, you might want to stay away. Too bad the clamp isn't universal, but maybe that'll be next year's model... Just uh... like remember to put thread locker on all the bolts--like the instructions say--duh.
Since this product has taken so much bashing, and i love it so far---i give it a perfect 5. So there.

An over-all pain in the @ss!!
Similar Products Used:Still trying to find an affordable multi-chainring tensioner.
Bike Setup:Rocky Mountain hardtail, HS-33, Alex rims, Z3 QR20.
Bottom Line:I really wanted this to work because I couldn't find another tensioner or guide that worked with a double ring up front (two rings and a rock guard). I guess MRP is making one now, but it is over $120, and that's more than this college student has. But never in my life have I fought a component like this one. It never was aligned right. The bolts never stayed tight, and then the thing broke. Looking back, it was a blessing that it broke because I could quit messing with it.
My new bike is an Azonic DS-1, and the chainstays are way too big for it, so unlike KORE says, it won't fit every size chainstay.
Overall, I wish I hadn't ever seen one.

Weaknesses:Chain guide wheel is noisy, despite Kore's claims. I tried the tip mentioned below, and put a section of a road bike tube around the wheel, now it's totally noiseless. Put locktite on the bolts, otherwise this thing will slip all over. Doesn't totally eliminate chain slap.

However, I got home, took it apart, bent the cage arms straight in the vice, put it back together, and it's running just fine. Plus now it looks nice and broken-in.

Weaknesses:needs longer bolts
Similar Products Used:none
Bike Setup:trek 6500 w/ manitou x-vert fork, wellgo clipless pedals
Bottom Line:I think the Chain Reactor is a must on all hardtails. It totally eliminates chain slap and unwanted shifting due to riding fasr over roots. It doesn't come with directions because the directions are on the Kore Products web sight. You can get the get through MTBReview. Before you install it you have to do a few things first:
1) Make sure you drive train is perfectly tuned before you intall the Kore Reactor.
2) Go to your nearest hardware store and purchase longer bolts, locktight(threadlock), and some bearing grease.
3)Grease up the guide wheel's axle and spring to keep sand out. Then apply locktight to all the threads on the bolts.
4) Don't forget to pre-stretch the spring before you install it.
The chain guide has a sweet spot and its differnt on all bikes, so you might have to try different posistions to get it right. Once it is on right to should be able to shift through all gears without any problems. The other guys who said this product wasn't worth it probably installed it wrong on thier bikes. This Product works. If you have no idea on how t install it and you have already read the directions on how to install off of the Kore website, then just take your bike to a bike shop and have them do it for you. I'll again again in a couple months to update the chain guide.

Weaknesses:The bolts are weak, will not fit all bikes. You can here a slight buzz but it is very faint. Should have lock washers on the pulley. It came without instructions.

Bike Setup:98 DBR V-link, pc89, xtr der.,race face rings
Bottom Line:Ok, I read all the horror stories and thought no product could be this bad. This thing will not fit all bikes, so check first before you buy. Installation was easy if you use common sense and know how your bike works in the first place, with that said you could still have problems but I think it is worth a try. When I first looked at it I knew I had to change the bolts to stronger and longer ones, also thread lock made sense too. I still use a lizard skin by cutting in the middle of the velcro part so it covers the clamp. I put this on in a way that if it does get pushed into the wheel it only hits the rim with the rubber chain guide. So does it work? Yes!!! Perfectly!!!!
I have to say I have only flogged this thing on one ride but I couldn't get it to mess up. If it gives me trouble I will simply undo the chain at the power link (Sachs chain) and bypass the thing then toss it in the garbage. I will report back if this thing doesn't last (durability could be an issue). Buy one and hope it fits, dont overpay they can't give these away. _1 chilis for the cheap bolts

Weaknesses:None.
Bike Setup:Schwinn Moab 3. Weekend warrior, weekday commuter. LX drive.
Bottom Line:Awesome product. I read all the reviews before I bought the reactor; all the horror stories are false. It took 5 minutes to install. I did put a drop of lock tite on every bolt when I installed it. I usually clean my drivetrain very well after every trail ride, but just to test the reactor, I rode it through sand, mud, water, changed gears constantly, and haven't cleaned it yet. That's 3 weeks of commuting and trail riding, and it hasn't skipped a beat yet; the roller won't stick. Anybody tired of chain slap, chain suck, or derailments should buy the reactor.

Strengths:no more chain slap, no more chain suck, looks cool, makes friends jealous
Weaknesses:takes some adaptation to install on some bikes, squeeks when its really dusty
Bike Setup:Rockhopper FSR comp, set up for freeride- XVert, XT drivetrain (LX crank: 22,32,bashring), Ritchey Zmax front tire (2.4), Specialized Big Hit pro front (2.5), kore chain reactor, flat pedals
Bottom Line:Seriously people, once you get it set up, it is so worth it. My FSR has rectanglular chainstay, so I had to go down to the hardware store and pick up some longer bolts (4mmx.7 threads)to make it fit. Then, I put some heavy lithium grease on the bushing to keep out the dirt. Finally, I tightened down the bolt that holds the pivot. My shifting improved, and my chain has not come off either ring since I put it on. If you know how to turn a wrench, you can install this thing and have it work for you. You you may have to figure out what works for your bike, but you will be pleased. If you still cant get it to work, take it back and get a Mr. dirt or something. If you just arent capable of adapting something as simple as this, dont waste my time with a poor review.

If you can get the the thing to stay in place on the chain stay, use longer bolts, use a cut up inner tube wrapped around it, IT WILL STILL HAVE PROBLEMS. Bottom Line:I bought this a while back because I thought it would be good since it's a KORE product. And usually, KORE products are good. But not in this case.Whilst installing the Chain Reactor, one of the bolts broke off on me. So I wrote to Kore, and within a few weeks, they had shipped me a new set of stickers and bolts. That was good customer service on their part, no doubt about it. Using the chain reactor was ok, although I did notice that once the urethane pulley was covered in chain oil, and road grime, it didn't turn as much as it did when it was new. As a result, the chain was being pulled over the pulley without making it turn. This caused a groove to form in the pulley, making it virtually useless from that point onwards. The chain reactor did cause some shifting problems, simply because the width of the pulley was not enough to cover the shifting range of my bike. Kore should make this wider to accomodate more chain positions. Also, the chain reactor was quite prone to being hit (especially when pedalling), and could be pushed into the tyre's path. Overall, not worth getting since there are better tensioners out there, and a bit expensive considering the performance. Kudos however to KORE for the great customer service.

Does the job it's supposed to, but not exactly how it's supposed to (that wheel rolls for about a week. . .but it still keeps the chain from slapping/sucking/dropping). Kore is good about getting you new bolts because they will strip VERY easily (I think they figured this out and send you better/stronger ones with no prob).
Loctite the screws into it, or they won't hold.
If you can, clean the wheel as much as you can, because any goop that gets in it is going to make it stop rolling. Also, from what I hear, take a piece of a road bike tube and place it over the wheel. . .and that will allow it to catch and roll.

Bottom Line:Should be called the Chair DEactor! I had installed a brand new sachs chain 3 weeks before I purchased this product and my shifting had been clean and sharp. I hated chain slap I like quiet ride so I picked up the reactor. I got it home and tried to install it. I had problems right from the start. The Kona has an ovalised tapered chainstay. to keep the reactor tight I had to wrap the chainstay with an old tube to thickin it. Now you have to tighten it down! you better be right were you want it cause the bolds strip REAL easy. You have a three inch spacing to choose from. no closer that 1 to the crank and no farther than 3 from the crank. I tried all positions NO shift improving and sometimes this product accualy caused the chainsuck. I have been doing all my own work on my bike for as long as I have been riding and Have never had a problem with anything I have done. I do have to say it did quiet my ride and reduce slap when it did work. I am very open to suggestions and will give this product a fare chance but so far NO good! I will give the reactor 2 chillies for now because I think it has the potential to be a good product but needs some work.

Bottom Line:

Had one for two years now and it does work, sorta. First, it DOES fit oval chainstays - just not all. This is a good reason to pay en extra $5-10 at the LBS, you can check it out BEFORE you buy. I did have problems installing due to a soft alloy clamp, hard steel bolts, and huge chainstays. KORE happily gave me a new (mismatched, hehe) clamp - when I finally ran down a rep at Mt. Snow. OK, so you have the sucker clamped on and you have that pivot problem.... Me too sometimes but I do NOT use lock tite, just torqued the shiite out of it and I have had no problems when riding, usally it moves because I hit it loading it onto a car rack... It does NOT improve shifting, in fact expect shifting on a triple crankset to be SLOW. I have not lost a chain, had chainslap or chainsuck though in two years. Which is its job, so overall if you need a tensioner and you have some (a lot) of patience it is a good choice... I guess.

You must lock tight the nuts to stop the risk of the bolts backing out. And yes I do have it mounted perfectly on an oval chainstay without any problems. It is really smooth and does improve my shifting like they said it would. Bottom Line:

Kore is nice. The pivot @ the bottom of the clamp needs loc-tite. Other than that, the sucker works AND it's super silent in any terrain. Also, I haven't had a chain suck ever since I put it on! Kore needs to limit the pivot to something like 10 degrees ... enough so it won't go into the spokes and yet away from the cranks. If that is resolved, it would be the best tensioner (it really still is).

Kore's tensioner works great if you keep the clamp bolts and pivot bolts tight (I'd loctite the damn things!). The pivot bolt that gave Billy problems is NOT supposed to pivot after you align the tensioner. It must be kept tight or you will suffer the same fate! Also, the clamp doesn't fit all frames...but email me with your chainstay dimensions and I may be able to make a clamp for you. I had to make one to fit the oversized rectangle chainstay on my Titus' rear-end.

Chain Reactor a chain tensioner from KORE. Looks good in the advertisements and I needed a
chain
tensioner. Purchased one for approximately $33.00. Installation is fairly simple, the Chain Reactor
does require a careful placement and alignment. It worked great for the first 100 lightly terrained
miles. Then the Chain Reactor snapped when I took my rig on rough rocky terrain. Unlike other
chain
tensioners, the Chain Reactor is pivoted and in the direct path of the crank. This design is
destined to have the same results I experienced today. My recommendation is to use a chain
tensioner
which is stationary or mounts out of the way of cranks. Sorry KORE, better luck next time.
