Strengths:- Reduce chain slap
- Very quiet
- Enhance pedal feedback
- For dual ring setup
- Resist chain drop as well
- Adjustable for different chain ring size
Weaknesses:- Crappy installation guide
- A little expensive
Bike Setup:08 VIP Meta 5, 09 Fox 32 Float 15qr, 08 Fox Float RP23, 08 XT groupset, Hope Pro 2 Hub, DT Swiss EX5.1d, DT Competition Spoke.
Bottom Line:Get this if you wanna run dual chain ring system. It does secure the chain from chain drop and it is very quiet. It reduce the chain slap as well when doing the descend. So i would say it do what it suppose to do and it does give more then what you can expect.

Price Paid: $130.00
Purchased At:Beyond Bikes
Strengths:Outstanding functionality. It does precisely what it is designed to do.
Weaknesses:A bit complex in its design. The instructions packaged with the guide, SUCK. They provide a combo of b/w pictures and drawings. The parts aren't numbered so you can't match the part picture with the corresponding description...a critical detail that can save you some headaches when dealing with small screws.
Similar Products Used:None
Bike Setup:06 Kona Coiler with many upgrades.
Bottom Line:While this guide can be tricky to assemble, anyone with decent mechanical aptitude can do it. The guide works, period. Never dropped a chain, never had issues with the roller not rotating or bearings going out. Bashguard can take it all. I contacted e-13 about their instructions, and they agreed they need a revision, but it seems they've done nothing about it. Come on, these guys can't take some office poge and have him rewrite a more comprehensive set of instructions?? Buy it, you won't regret it. Anyone having problems with this guide, didn't install it properly.

Strengths:This is a follow up review. After runnignh the DRS on some pretty hard DH its help up great ...havnt lost a chain yet...silent..works great Best dual ring guide ever...seriously
Weaknesses:only one that I found so far was that E13 has updated and changed their hardware that comes along with the DRS and havnt changed the instructions. SAo when you put on the slider Plates(spacers) the short screws that they say to use arent long enough to reach the nyloc part but no big deal...just use long ones provided and it works fine and doesnt do any harm wgatso ever(not just me saying this I e-mailed E13 and they said the exact same thing)

Strengths:Well built, sturdy
Weaknesses:Heavy, expensive, poor roller design.
Similar Products Used:Blackspire Dewlie, Blackspire Stinger
Bike Setup:Santa Cruz Heckler
Bottom Line:I have used this guide for a year and had to replace the roller twice and the bearing once. Maybe the BC winters aren't the best place for it. The bearing seizes very easily being so small and the roller tends to gum up and stop rolling often. I don't feel that regular maintenance should require disassembling it after each ride. I had a Blackspire Dewlie that ran flawlessly for 2 years without hassle. I now run a Blackspire Stinger. It's the best $30 I've ever spent. Just pick up a lightweight bashguard of your choice to run with it and you've got a great setup for under $60.

Strengths:This is a follow-up review, see below.
Bike Setup:2006 Giant Faith 2, basically stock with some minor mods
Bottom Line:This is a follow up review. In the last review, I had pulled the guide of my old AC2 and put it on the Faith, and was getting a lot of chain suck. Finally diagnosed the problem. I had the flip-flop roller mounted backwards (ie. large section of the roller away from the bb instead of closer to the bb). Duh...., pretty stupid mistake. Now the guide is running absolutely beautiful.

Price Paid: $120.00
Purchased At:Ride-This.com
Strengths:Keeps the chain on the rings when pedalling forward.
Weaknesses:I do experience a fair bit of "chain-suck" when backpedalling. I've toyed around, and noticed that when backpedalling, the chain will slip off the large side of the roller to the small side, causing the chain to come off the big ring and jam in the derailleur. I'm not certain it's a problem with the product though. I think if I play around with the chainline some more, or the spacers on the chainguide plate, I might be able to get it to work better. Also, installation is a bit of a pain, and the bolts don't fit very well into the plastic plates, making insertion/removal of the bolts a nuisance.
Bike Setup:2006 Faith 2, mostly stock, e-Thirteen DRS, Stan's No-Tubes conversion.
Bottom Line:The product is decent, but like I've said, I think there may be a lot of tinkering required to get it running real smoothly. While pedalling forward it's fine, but the chain suck is a pain when you're stopped on the trail, and trying to get your cranks lined up flat before getting on your pedals and dropping in.

Any one who says that E thirteen makes crap, is not mechanically inclined or did not read the entire instruction sheet. The instructions definately say to NOT USE MINERAL BASED LUBES. Some people never read instructions. Install is very easy if you have ANY mechanical ability. Plastic bash guard WILL crack if you over tighten the chain ring bolts. Only time it hasn't shifted is when it piles up with mud and forest floor debris. Clean it out quickly and all good again.

And yes, I remember seeing the warning in the box about mineral spirits affecting the plastic, (and that was early spring of this year.)

Bike Setup:2006 Santa Cruz VP free, Fox 40 RC2 forks, DHX 5.0 shock, Race Face cranks and bars, DT swiss 6.1 rims and Kenda Navegal 2.5 tires
Bottom Line:I bought this bike about 2 months ago and absolutely love it, the problem is this darn E.thirteen DRS guide system and bashguard that was put on it for the dual ring set up I have. Bottom line is it stinks, first my bash guard started to crack around the area where the bolts are, then the chain guide roller brack cracked, then the bracket that the guide roller bolts to cracks. Dang! I'm mad, I called the bike shop and told them about my bash ring and promply put a race face bash ring on, then I started to notice the other parts and found out from them that you can't use a chain oil like Pro Link that is a mineral oil. The instructions say nothing about only using certain chain oils, but I called E.thirteen and they confirmed what my bikeshop told me. I love this bike, but I'm really dissapointed that I have to start tearing it apart and looking for a different set up now after all these problems. E.thirteen said they'd replace the roller and the mounting bracket, but I'm still suspicious if it's going to hold up. I read a lot of positive reviews about this product, but I'm having a hard time believing that I'm the only person that hasn't used Prolink on this system and had problems. Maybe I'm just the unlucky person who got instructions that left out the warning not to use Prolink or I should have somehow known that only certain chain lubes won't make these plastic parts brittle, Bottom line, I'm very irritated

Strengths:Quiet, keep chain where it should be, made my dual slalom bike a multi-purpose ride
Weaknesses:Can be hard to set up if you don't read the directions. If I had read them first, I would have had the install done in half the time.
Similar Products Used:This was my first dual ring guide. Have used the SRS and MRP DH guides before.
Bike Setup:Mountain Cycle Rumble, TruVativ cranks, sram x-9 drive train, Hayes Brakes, Z1...
Bottom Line:When installed right, this thing works. Very little noise or drag when riding. I don't even notice it while climbing. I have only drop a chain once, but I think it was due to a new derailure cable stretching. A quick adjust there were no more problems the rest of the ride.

I can not stress enough how important to read the instructions first. They are very detailed you will get the set up right first time. I skipped them because I figured "How much harder can it be that then SRS?" Well, those details in regard to set up came back to bite me in the ass. I read the instructions, everything went on perfect.

I will be installing another DRS on my next bike and have recommended this guide to several people. Top notch stuff!!

Weaknesses:doesn't work that well.
Similar Products Used:Non yet, but will be replacing with something that works.
Bike Setup:Geminii 2000, e-13 dualie. Sherman forks.
Bottom Line:All I know is that my chain routinely flops off. My bike is well-adjusted. The chain routinely ends up off the sprocket just the same. It happened during a race. It happens out on the trail. It happens all the time. I try my best not to shift because I never know if my chain is going to end up being jammed.

Also, there is a nice fat bashring but the chain guide hangs down below it, so I'm not sure how good the bashring is if you tear off the chain guide before you ever get to it.

After a year of struggling with this thing, I'm pretty much fed up. I like having two gears up front...but I'm switching to a single chainring/tensioner settup that doesn't have this kind of trouble. I guess trying to build up a "do-everything" bike just doesn't work. A downhill bike needs to be a downhill bike.

Weaknesses:Difficult Installation
Similar Products Used:MRP System 1
Bike Setup:67 with a Z150, Juicy 7's, WTB Wheels, e13 DRS
Bottom Line:The price will want to steer anyone away from potentially getting this product. $150 dollars is nothing to sneeze at, and may deter people to look at other cheaper products, like the MRP LRP. Although the price is expensive, I feel its worth every penny.

A lot of people don't have the luxury to own multiple bikes, for those who want to make a well rounded all around bike designed for everything, the e13 DRS is there. The e13 is a mega quality chainguide that comes with a system that never drops your chain, keeps everything quiet, and is maintanice free.

Installation for me was actually quick and easy, I took it to a bike shop. First time you open the box for the DRS, you will be instantly confusfued. Your local bike shop is there to help you, and typically costs upwards of 25 dollars to have it installed, worth the price to correctly install the product if you ask me.

Overall: With my chain never dropping, the system running quiet and mantanince free, theres not a better product out there, sure it may be expensive, but you do get what you pay for. Thumbs up to the e13 DRS.

Value: 5 Chilis, the product is expensive, but performs to its value

Date Reviewed: July 15, 2005
Duration Product Used:6 months
Strengths:Works really well when new.
Weaknesses:Not terribly durable. The plastic bits that hold the lower roller on got smashed off within a couple months because they hang lower than the bashguard. I had to fabricate some new ones out of aluminum. Also, the boomerang bends if you hit a rock. A rubber hammer is a very usefull tool to "adjust" this chainguide.
Bike Setup:7x7 Freeride bike
Bottom Line:I was disappointed with the durability of the roller setup. The plastic bits don't handle much of an impact, and things get bent out shape. Bending isn't a problem really, but the plastic gets smashed and becomes useless. Also, I don't think it's a very good value. They must be making a lot of money on these, because there really isn't that much to them. $50 would seem like a more realistic price.

Bottom Line:Bottom line is that this system works Well fairly easy to setup...my suggestion before buying the Drs is Decide what gearing you need to have.... if you have a need for a duel ring setup but dont need a huge big ring in teh front stick to using the Smaller guide system... its alot easier to find rings for it and they work alot better that way... im running a 38/22 and the shift is Harsh...only reason i am running this system over a single is the fact that this is my only bike and i still like to use it for climbing and having a smaller gear comes in handyIf you dont need to have two rings then i would suggest the Srs. If you decide you need to have the larger system so you can run larger gears about the only way your getting what you need is to Machine a DH ring like i did or to get the rings straight from e13. they are the only ones in a weeks looking i found that even Makes a Middle type ring in anything larger than a 34. they ahve currently 36 38 40 and 42 42's being hard to keep availableso if thats what your using order it early.

Price Paid: $120.00

Strengths:Chain stays on

Bashguard won't bend

New rubber roller is quiet

Flexible adjustment (unlike LRP)
Weaknesses:E-13 has a hard time keeping these in stock, so your LBS may have a hard time getting them.

Last time I spoke with Evil, they said they were removing the ISCG mount holes on newer models of the DRS. This would be a terrible idea as it would make it impossible to mount on the Demo 9 frame, since the BB area is so massive
Similar Products Used:MRP LRP (not very adjustable), HEIM 3-GUIDE (very flexible)
Bike Setup:Specialized '04 Demo 9, Fox 40 RC2, Mavic EX823 rims + Ti spokes, King front hub and headset, Hopey, 22T & 38T front ring with E-13 DRS machined to fit 38T ring, SRAM X.9 shifter and rear derailleur (Shimano front), Hayes HFX Mag 8", Nokian Gazzaloddi G 2.6", Thomson seatpost and 50mm stem, ODI ruffian grips, Crank Bros Mallet M.
Bottom Line:This guide works GREAT, but did require some customization to fit the Demo 9 frame. I don't consider this a weakness, as the MRP LRP wouldn't have fit at all.

The DRS aluminum bracket interferes with the large BB area of the Demo 9. I had to install the BB first, then use 5 washers to space out the SRS bracket and use longer screws. This fit fine, until I swapped the rear shock position to raise the BB height. This causes interference with the chain stay and the plastic guide portion. I had to grind out a triangular wedge to allow the chain stay to clear.

I am running a XTR stainless 22T small ring and a Truvativ 38T ramped/pinned large ring. Since E-13 only makes 36T and 40T bash rings, I went with the 40T and machined it down to fit the 38T better. This gave me a little more ground clearance as well as putting the roller closer to the chain rings. Not absolutely necessary, but a nice touch.
Shifting with this combo works OK, I have occasional chain suck when downshifting if not pedaling fast enough, but never a dropped or stuck chain.

I have a friend who recently purchased an LRP, and it is much harder to set up and doesn’t function as nicely as the DRS.

BTW, I am running FSA V Drive Extreme cranks and the Truvativ 128mm BB that came with the frame. I would like to try the Saint or X-type cranks, but don’t think they would fit with this guide.

After 6 months of use, I am seeing some wear on the rubber roller. This is to be expected, but I think E-13 should include a spare roller in the kit. The additional cost would be negligible. The bearings have held up fine.

Bike Setup:Kona Stinky 02' with 5" of travel. Sherman Slider 03' w/ 6" of travel. Hadley 108
Bottom Line:This product rules. I have been using it for one season and it has yet to let me down. It holds the chain tight. It is very easy to install. It may need some adjusting after you install it. Be sure to not over tighten the roller, or else you will have a stiff roller that won't roll. The chain will chew through the rubber quicker if that happens.

The only problem I have had with it was a stuck chain between the chain stay and the outside of the "ring security." It happens when I am down hilling through some really bumpy stuff, stairs, rock gardens, and such, and I am in the two smallest cogs or really close to it. It only happens because my derailler can not take up the slack fast enough and gets whipped in there. I easily fix it by un-winding the spring and compressing the bike to give the chain some space to get back into position. The problem is mostly my fault since I shouldn't even be in those gears anyways. Despite the one problem I have had with it I highly recommend it.

Strengths:Bashguard is indestructable!!! Easy to install. Quiet roller.
Weaknesses:Price.
Similar Products Used:Blackspire Dewlie
Bike Setup:'03 Kona Dawg
Bottom Line:After a few rides with the DRS, I couldn't be happier! The lexan supercharger (bash guard) is super tough! One of the main advantages I noticed immediately is that with the superchager being smaller in diameter than the big-ring that was there, I have more clearance though rocks, over logs, etc. Also, it is wide, smooth and slick, allowing it to glide/slide over logs as opposed to a large ring. This give it an edge for me over some bash guards (RaceFace, Salsa) that have "teeth" that tend to dig into logs.

The chain tensioner is also great. For '04, they came out with a new, softer compound roller that is much quieter than the older models. It's pretty quiet. The step-down in the roller also allows it to shift easily from middle to granny with no problems. One thing that did surprise me was that there is no problem back peddling either which is nice. It has also cut down on the amount of chain slap, and just plain does it's job! No dropped chaing thus far...

I had Chris install this for me, but it seemed to me as long as you have the right parts and the right tools, this wouldn't be too difficult to do yourself. Make sure you pay attention to the chainline and adjust your front deraileur so it doesn't shift out past the middle ring.

This is probably the best bike investment I've made all year and I couldn't imagine riding with out one now. (Granted I never had any use for a big ring anyway).

Strengths:The bashring... it's almost indestructible. The guide looks good and runs pretty quietly with minimal drag too.
Weaknesses:It's expensive but at this stage it looks like it will last for ages. The roller doesn't like mud at all.
Similar Products Used:Blackspire bashrings
Bike Setup:'04 Craftworks FRM125 with Sherman Slider
Bottom Line:If I never rode in the mud this guide would get a 5 star rating. Once the crud gets in around the roller, it grinds to a halt. The guide still does its job, just not as smoothly.

I've only ever dropped the chain once, pedalling right after landing a big jump. Still, with no top guide you'd expect this every now and again. That's what the SRS guide is for.

The e.thirteen DRS is the best dual ring guide on the market. The initial cost is a bit frightning but you get what you pay for. The bashring survived one particularly massive 50/50 case onto solid rock with only a few minor scratches to show for it.

I'd buy another one for sure.

Strengths:does what it says on the box: allows you to run a chainguide with your front mech, granny and middle ring still in place. It works. The clear bashring included with the kit looks very cool and is practically indestructible.
Weaknesses:noisy and overpriced. not particularly great value for the $ - bashring aside, there must be about $15 worth of aluminum & chintz plastic in the chainguide itself. Roller jams with crud too easily.
Bike Setup:'02 Edge with Mavic D321s, Raceface cranks & BB, Marzocchi fork, Shimano mechs & discs, Diabolous bar & stem
Bottom Line:After installation, I noticed a welcome increase in shifting accuracy and virtually no discernible drag on the pedals, as well as all the usual benefits associated with such a device. If you want to run a chainguide but keep your front derailleur and double rings, this device is going to make it possible. My biggest complaint, besides the price, is the use of a hard plastic roller rather than something quieter. Apparently the '04 model has a softer compund roller. I also found that mud and crud liked to wedge itself between the roller and the plastic spacer, immobilizing it. I am hoping that the new roller will solve this problem also. Overall, it's a simple design that works well. Awesome polycarbonate bashring.

Once I cleaned everything so the roller would actually roll again, the flat spot was bad enough that the chain would stop it and just slide. I'm not sure there's anything design-wise to stop that...just one of those things I guess. I replaced the roller, and since I usually stay off the trails when it's super muddy, I haven't had any trouble since. Top score for value - 5/5 for overall, despite one muddy ride toasting my roller.

Bike Setup:Not important, but I use on a Bullit.
Bottom Line:In my opinion, one of the best mtb products released in a while.

Chainguides take patience setting up right, especially if you aren't the best at doing it. One beer and an hour later the guide was on and running perfectly. No machining, no modifications. It just slapped right on. The guide was designed around the Bullit so it MAY be a little different setting up on other bikes. Check with the guys at Evil if you aren't sure. They have good customer service to back up their product.

If you prefer quiet bikes, this guide is the guide for you. Not only is it quiet, but it also has very low friction. I'm able to use it on my Bullit for cross country climbs without robbing too much climbing power.

The bash ring is great. Compared to my other chainguides, it resists bending and deep gouges better than the metal versions.

The chainguides I've used have all worked well. The DRS just has a couple other nice things about it that I believe make it more appealing.

I've tested this product only since mid summer last year so I can't give it any perfect scores until the long term durability issue has been addressed.
