Everyone already knows that their products are the best!
I however want to shower them with praise for their impeccable customer service, and standing by their product like no other.
My stem cracked and I contacted them via email, and was asked to send my stem in for replacement even after determining that my failed stem was caused by my errors, (overtightening the bolts. I expected to read that I would not be able to receive warranty replacement, but to my to my surprise was asked to send in the stem and they would replace it. Delighted as I was, I sent the stem in and received a replacement in one week.
I REALLY NEED TO SAY TO EVERYONE THAT THOMSON IS THE BEST THERE IS and I am thankful I made the decision to purchase the best there is. Thomson Stem and Seatpost! There're the best! Even if my stem was not replaced I would purchase another one.
Thank you so much for being the Company that you are. Your service is much appreciated.

I wrote a review a year ago about cracks on the faceplate (from a different bike and different Thomson stem). The Customer Service at that time was outstanding, as it was in this most recent experience. However, I weigh 158 lbs and ride XC style singletrack. No hucking off of 5' ledges or soaring over 20 foot gaps. Rocks, roots and logs are pretty much the standard fare I ride (the granite faces at Conyers going 25 MPH are an exception). Replaced a 110 mm 6 deg EA 50 with a 100 mm 5 deg Thomson, and am now learning to ride my bike all over again. It has turned an already great bike into a singletrack demon. The steering is so much more responsive, crisper, cleaner - I spent most of my first ride after making the switch running into the sides of the trail. Am pleased I didn't go for the 90 mm - would have been too short for my 6'1" 187 cm body on the Trance 20" frame I think - but for all you FS and especially Trance riders out there, I'd highly recommend trying a Thomson 100 mm for size. Yes, it's expensive, but...would you fit a truck steering wheel to a Porsche?

having this stem still makes me confident that this product will last me another 5yrs. the only thing i would like to know is how much tensile strength can this stem handle, so that i will know my limitations. above all, their customer support is very helpful and very prompt that during the time they received my returned cracked face plate, they shipped it out immediately.
i'm not disappointed to what happened to their product, maybe the thing they gave me was already redesigned to handle such load, impact, and can carry my weight in accordance to my riding style, which i love going down the single track. i just hope if anybody got the same situation, it's better go directly to the manufacturer and ask for a free replacement. well done thomson, and hopefully, R&D with QC will be done perfectly. nobody's perfect anyways...happy trails!!! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Cool machining from one piece and no welds is a nice touch. If you can break one, the rest of your bike will likely be wasted too! | | Weaknesses: | I have yet to find a true weakness in any of the Thomsons I've owned. The slight amount of extra weight is not a concern. You may want to remove the bolts 1 or 2 times a year to grease them if it starts squeeking. | | Similar Products Used: | Too many to list, but none as strong. | | Bike Setup: | NRS1 with a shiny polished silver Thomson Elite stem, CrossMax SL's and other aftermarket bits not worth using server space on. | | Bottom Line: | I've used several Thomson Elite stems on my road and MTB's because there isn't a better engineered stem on the market. For carbon steerers, the Elite's wrap around clamp secures it without damaging the carbon surface.
My next Thomson stem will be the Elite X4 for the new single speed. I'll write about it in 9 months after the upcoming Fall and Spring seasons of racing.

$35.00 | | Purchased At: | online auction - used | | Strengths: | Strong/no flex for 180 lb XC rider, good quality, good value in the $30 range, Thomson website has detailed instrucions for installation. Thomson says OK to run "upside down", which I do for a -5 degree setup. Low stack height. | | Weaknesses: | A little heavy for XC, I guess the clamp design works OK but it puts all the clamp "load" on the steerer on a smaller area in the front. | | Similar Products Used: | Lots except the big $ carbon/titanium jobs. | | Bike Setup: | Jamis Dakar Pro, built fairly light with high end components. SID SL. Cane Creek S-6 | | Bottom Line: | Stem works great. I installed as per the instrucions on the Thomson website; used a mini-torque wrench to tighten, carefully cleaned any oil off steerer and stem before installing. Used 18 inch lbs preload on the top cap then used the inch pounds Thomson recommends for the stem and haven't had any problems riding a lot of rough XC, small drops, etc. No race or freestyle although it looks like it might be tough enough for either assuming the clamp will hold. I'm still a little nervous about the clamp slipping because of all the rock garden pounding it's getting/going to get.
Given the strength of the 7000 series aluminum, and that it's from a solid chunk of the stuff, I like the idea that it should be "install (correctly) over a good headset and ride happily ever after". We'll see. On a lightweight XC rig I'm putting together, I'm trying an FSA XC to save a couple of ounces. I think Thomson should take a hard look at some of the other stems out there today and see if it's time for an updated design, maybe an XC specific.
If you can find a Thomson Elite, on closeout or at auction, in the $30 -$40 price range, and want a stem for all around intermediate XC use, buy it. Value rating is for $40 price. At full retail, I'd drop the value rating to 4 flamers. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

It hasn't budged after the first few rides through technical singletrack, rock gardens, and fast downhills. The 5 degree/100mm combo is just what I was looking for. Steering feel is great, and I feel much more in control of the front end. To the people complaining about the stem not clamping tight and coming loose, I suspect it's user error and not the product. When tightening the stem, you have to understand the way the clamp works. First use a regular wrench to get both bolts almost-tight. Then use the torque wrench. As you tighten one side, the other side will loosen slightly. You'll have to go back and forth a few times, re-tightening both sides to the recommended lb-ft. If you only torque each side down once, the stem will still be loose because one side will not be at the recommended lb-ft. This is the second one I've installed, and I've had no problems with either. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

However, when I went to remove it, one of the bolts that hold the stem in place snaped. I had to drill it out and when it finally gave the lil wedge piece went flying across the garage. I did not install the stem orginally so I don't know if it was installed incorrectly (maybe tightened too much, or no thread prep) I do believe the strange designed of the clamping system added to the problem. This is a stem. It clamps the handlebars and the steerer tube. It performs the basic functionality of holding your front end together - there is nothing special or exciting about this stem.
It is, however, a high quality, stiff, light stem and that's really all you can ever ask of it. Great product that does its job.. As worthy as Chris King.
To the people who cannot keep their stem from slipping, you need to be more than hamfisted ogre with an allen wrench to install it. It's simple, read the directions and install accordingly. I have had a couple really nasty crashes and the stem hasn't budged a millimeter. Install it properly and you will have no problems. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

This one works. | | Similar Products Used: | Azonic shorty, Ritchy WCS, Titec, Kalloy, Icon, Generic | | Bottom Line: | I ride aggressive trails -- nothing too crazy, but I am not light on my parts by any means. So far, this products has held up without complaint. That said, any conventional well built stem with a four bolt plate would likely work just as well.
The detailing on the stem is really nice -- there is clearly some excellent machining and engineering dedicated to this product. The effort shows.
The quality of the metal and the bar clamping mechanism is excellent -- it is one of the few stems that I absolutely trust with carbon handlebars. No burrs or rough edges here.
I live in Macon, Thomson's headquarters, and ride on the excellent trail which they provide for free. This is a quality company that, despite their success, still respects the MTB community, IMO.
Frankly, you cannot find another bike product of this caliber for the $65 you can get this stem. Excellent value.
Overall, a very nice piece of bike jewelry that, like King headsets, just work. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$65.00 | | Purchased At: | Bike Junkie | | Strengths: | Strong Clamp on the bars has to be the best to clamp carbon fiber bars. So far it's been strong and hasn't cracked or bent yet, No slippage yet at all unlike some other reviewers | | Weaknesses: | None so far! People it's a Thomson need I say more! | | Similar Products Used: | Easton, Kore, Specialized, and some other no-name brands | | Bike Setup: | Specialized Stunmpjumper FSR XC with plenty of XC goodies. | | Bottom Line: | I got this stem due to the fact that my old Easton EA-50 developed a creak after I got my Easton Monkey Lite Carbon Bars and it was driving me crazy. I kept tourqeing it and it kept creaking. I used both grease and locktite on my EA-50 and it still creaked. Go figure Easton bars and an Easton stem you would think it would work great. Easton needs to make a stem that can clamp their carbon bars better. So I bought a Thomson and now no creak and it clamps the bars awesome. I was a little skeptical about the steering tube clamp but it works great. Any one who it having slippage problems try degreasing your steering tube and stem and then grease the threads and use a TOURQUE WRENCH! Maybe then it won't slip, have you noticed that only a handful of people have had slippage problems and every one else is not having a problem. When all else fails try reading the directions before you start to dismantle your bike and install it the right way. Everyone else is right this has to be the best stem on the market and if you run carbon fiber bar it is a must! PEACE! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

If you're having problems with the steerer connection or the handlebar connection, try having a quality shop work on the problem. I personally know dozens of riders who use this product without any problems, and I just find it hard to believe it's the product when I hear folks complaining it doesn't perform its basic function. $45.00 | | Purchased At: | Through team order | | Strengths: | Light weight, wide clamp area for the bars, no bolts to smash your knees on, face plate comes completely off so you don't have to remove your levers, etc. | | Weaknesses: | Won't stay tight on my steer tube, moves around. Hard to find the right amount of clamp-tightness on carbon bars. | | Similar Products Used: | Race Face Deus Stem, Bontrager stem | | Bike Setup: | On my old GT Zaskar LE hardtail | | Bottom Line: | The bottom line is a stem needs to perform two functions: 1) clamp the bars so they don't move. 2 ) clamp the steertube so the stem doesn't move. This stem fails to do #2, the stem always seems to move around a little bit after big impacts, jumps or really rough trails. I followed the instructions. I torqued the bolts down tighter after it moved the first few times but nothing seems to keep it in place for good. It doesn't move a lot (more than 1/2 an inch), but you can notice that your bars aren't straight after a few good jumps. Personally, I think the mechanism for clamping the stem to the steertube is either; over-engineered, too whacky to do it's real job or just doesn't work with some steertubes (I have a Marzocchi Bomber). Some of my friends have had better luck. I wouldn't buy this stem again because it won't stay in place and that scares me because I like my parts to perform their basic functions. I switched to the Race Face Deus stem on my new bike (which is lighter and has better overall clamping mechanisms) and so far it is working out great. You should check the other reviews for this problem or ask your friends about movement on the steer tube before buying this stem. If it weren't for this issue I would recommend it. Time to re-adjust the Thompson on my GT dammit. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I just cracked it on both sides of the stem near the steer tube. I'm not really sure what to say about this, I've never cracked a stem before and I never thought I'd crack this one. I'm a little disappointed but it did last for a while. I'm 200 lbs and I can be a bit abusive so I can't really be too bothered by it. However, once I've broken something I won't buy it again. It worked well while it lasted, but I like buying things that I can put on my bike, beat the crap out of and not worry about it ever again. This used to be one of those parts, it's not anymore. In all fairness, I do think it's a decent stem, I just want something that's indestructable and this isn't it. $100.00 | | Purchased At: | Beyond Mountain Bikes | | Strengths: | Other stems are a lump of metal - this is a sculpture. Whenever I'm bored, I go the garage and run my hands over it, Mmmmm CNC ribbing. | | Weaknesses: | When Thomson specify a maximum torque for tightening the bolts, believe it. It's barely more than finger tight thanks to the special clamping system. If you overdo it, you'll either partly strip the hexagons with your allen key (as I did) or go all the way like Aaron and make with the dynamite. Thomson sent me a free set of bolts without argument so it all looks gorgeous again. | | Similar Products Used: | Specialized, Race Face Prodigy | | Bike Setup: | Santa Cruz Superlight, Chris King, Easton carbon Monkeybar | | Bottom Line: | Thomson don't make anything but stems and seatposts - but they don't need to. The stems come in so many varieties of length and angle you could experiment for months (if you could afford it). The clamping system, while susceptible to over-tightening, is superior to anything else on the market making unwanted movement a thing of the past. Everything else just looks tacky - and when you know that they make sure their stuff is super strong as well, why would you buy anything else around the price mark? | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Piece of crap stem! | | Similar Products Used: | RF | | Bike Setup: | Santa Cruze SL w/XTR and RF w/a fox fork up front. | | Bottom Line: | This stem really sucks! I read all the reviews so I decided to buy it for my new bike. Now that I need to take it off to send my fork back for a rebuild the stem won't come off! Yep, the bolts are fused on and no I did not only loosen one bolt, I loosened both as Thompson suggests. My LBS has broken 4 sets of drill bits trying to drill the bolts on this stem off. Even the E-Z outs that are designed for steal broke. The only option left is to weld cut the stem off the steer tube.
This stem is great if you never need to remove it! Otherwise it is a true piece of crap. I will never use another Thompson product on my bike again!! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$70.00 | | Purchased At: | Full Cycle | | Strengths: | Looks amazing. High quality CNC and annodization creates a work of art in aluminum. Funky 2-bolt pinch design allows a lightweight but still solid connection to the steerer tube. | | Weaknesses: | Not nearly as stiff as people claim. Overrated product. Edges of faceplate dig into bar. | | Similar Products Used: | Titec Big-Al (excellent). Titec Knucklehead DH (fantastic). Profile (okay). Easton EA-70 (excellent). | | Bike Setup: | Diamondback X2 front triangle / Diamondback XR4 swingarm with Fox Float RL 5" / Psylo Race 5" / Easton MonkeyLite XC / Chris King Hubs | | Bottom Line: | Thomson makes a nice stem, but similar to their seatposts, they are overrated. When I first mounted my Easton MonkeyLight Bars into the Thomson, I torqued everything down to a little less than spec, there was a noticable amount of twist from the 4-bolts shifting (the plate wasn't tight enough). When tightened to spec, the bar/faceplate interface is solid but the stem shaft (only a 90mm) will still twist 1-2 degrees under load. Another problem is that the edges of the faceplate and stem face are machined to a sharp edge, in addition, the clamping area of faceplate is very narrow compared to the Titec stems. This causes a lot of force to be placed on the edges of the bar/stem interface and worried me enough that I switched back to the 100mm Big Al. I find that I am less confident with the Thomson when hammering through rocky washes or in tight switchbacks where steering precision is at a premium.
Overall I think the Thomson is still one of the best lightweight XC stems, but its reputation as a bomber stem for all bikes and all riders is undeserved.

The first thing I noticed about this stem: LIGHT! No welds, totally CNC machined from a solid block of aluminum. Excellent design with the allen bolts positioned along the side of the stem near the steerer.
This stem has another sweet design: the knee-friendly clamp. Have you ever used an old Salsa stem? I have one on my other bike, and every now and then I smash the sh1t out of my knee when either jumping or hammering out of the saddle. I really have to be careful not to chunder my knee with that setup. But with the Thomson stem, that's not a worry. They've lovingly and carefully designed this piece of engineering art so that you can ride with confidence and never give your stem a second thought.
It's strong, light, badass looking and will last you a lifetime. "And that's the bottom line!"

I travelled with my bike and lost the clamp assembly somewhere along the way. None of the local shops stocked just the clamp, so I called Thomson, and they sent me one out that same day for free.
If you don't own a torque wrench, have a shop install this- otherwise you'll end up with only one of the bolts in the clamp assembly taking all the force. Also, make sure you follow the directions when they say to clean your steer tube.

from east coast Date Reviewed: February 27, 2002 | | Duration Product Used: | 3 months | | Strengths: | 1. Stiff as a block of marble 2. 4 bolts means no more paranoia that my bar and stem will part company at an inconvenient time 3. Looks good and matches my seatpost 4. Seems to clamp steerer very well, without risk of damage 5. General level of quality -- what you'd expect from Thomson | | Weaknesses: | Steerer clamp design makes installation/removal a bit of a pain
| | Similar Products Used: | all the usual stuff | | Bike Setup: | steel hardtail SS with EA-70 risers | | Bottom Line: | Wow. I can't imagine any stem feeling stiffer or stronger. The size of the bar clamp is great. Love having the secure feeling of those 4 clamp bolts. Very good choice of sizes, though a 0-degree would be a nice addition. Steerer clamp takes time to tighten/loosen and the bolts are hard to access with CPR-type multi tools with short hex wrenches.
Buy it if: 1. Safety, strength, stiffness and general quality are your top priorities. 2. You want an Easton Mag stem for those same reasons but don't want to spend the $140 that the Mag costs.
Don't buy it if: 1. You can't see spending $80 on ANY kind of stem 2. You'll install and remove it frequently, and mind the extra time it takes to do so. 3. You want an ultra-lite stem and don't mind the risk (real or perceived) of such products.
Would give it 4.5 stars if I could. Hmmmm. Will compromise and do 4 for value and 5 for overall... | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$60.00 | | Purchased At: | Ebay auction | | Strengths: | Strong, well designed, comes in many lengths, classy looking, and no creaks when riding. | | Weaknesses: | Can't think of any. | | Similar Products Used: | Titec AL, and a few generics. | | Bike Setup: | XTR Rear Deraileur and shifters, Truvativ Stylo Team spline cranks, Cane Creek Wheelset, XT front deraileur, Dean Titanium seatpost, Thomson Stem, Marzocchi Z3 forks, Schwinn Homegrown frame. | | Bottom Line: | It costs a little bit more than a lot of other stems. It is worth it though. Every detail illustrates high quality workmanship! Buy it. You won't regret it! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$79.00 | | Purchased At: | LBS | | Strengths: | Looks, strength...See the below mentioned poster. A stem that can support the weight of A Pacer could probably hande my fat ass. | | Weaknesses: | None. Company Weakness: They dont make a crankset yet! | | Similar Products Used: | Icon, Bontrager... | | Bike Setup: | 2000 Fisher Kaitiai, 2001 Fisher Sugar 3+. | | Bottom Line: | I've had this stem on my bike for a while. I set it and left it alone. Never gave it another thought. Stiff as hell and very strong. I ordered a new bike a few weeks ago and so I'm starting to move key components like my Thomson stem and seatpost off of my old ride and onto the new one. I discovered that I could'nt get 2 of my old bolts out of the stem and stripped them trying. I sent an email to Thomson and the sent me 2 new bolts, perfect instructions on how to drill out the old bolts, and a couple of great thomson posters (including one of the aforementioned poster involving the Pacer) free of charge. 5 chilis for value, quality, and the absolutely outstanding customer service at Thomson. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

You must see the Thomson website, www.lhthomson.com/pacer.asp This stem is holding up a 3000 lb Dodge Pacer! Dodge made the Pacer I think, oh whatever. Email them and they'll send you a poster of it. I'm surprized nobody has mentioned this yet. I do not work for Thomson, but they should hire me as their company cheerleader. Now do what I told you to do and get to that site man! Just think, you'll never have to explain to your dentist that it wasn't a hockey puck it was a faulty bike stem. I love you Thomson stems&posts people!xoxoxo | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

from Waunakee, WI Date Reviewed: February 13, 2002 | | Favorite Trail: | Somethine technical | | Duration Product Used: | 1 Year | | Strengths: | Weight, stiffness, looks, strength, design, quality, craftsmanship | | Weaknesses: | Let see, none other than make sure to loosen the steer tube bolt the same amount on each side or the screws will freeze. Make sure to grease bolts or they like to freeze. | | Similar Products Used: | Icon Sterling, Bontrager AHS, Control Tech, Titec Big Al, etc.. | | Bike Setup: | Santa Cruz Superlight, Zokes Z2, Chris King, XTR/XT... | | Bottom Line: | This stem is amazing, I am not kiding. I went from a CRAPPY Icon sterling stem to this and I didn't know a stem could be this stiff, and at 200g it is pretty darn light to. This stem will continue to go on my bikes for a while. This stem really is a peice of work! You can't go wrong with this stem and now that they have a DH stem, I guess there is no need for any other stem to be produced. Nice job Thomson! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
