Strengths:    Reliability. They have not broken in over 12 years of operations. I have a stash of grips to keep them useble. I have replaced chains, chain rings and cassettes twice over the 12 years, and sometimes wish these damn things would die so I can replace them too. Will replace them when my supply of grips runs out.

Weaknesses:    Maintenance. Found it a real task to thread the cable. Probably is my inexperience tho.

Bottom Line:
Die dammit so I can replace you! Just too damn reliable. I honestly don't know why people hate gripshifts so much, I personally like a handle bar without all the levers. It is hard to keep using them when the grips for them are rare these days. Someone @ SRAM help me out here!

Strengths:    bulletproof will not break and so reliable it's in a class by itself

Weaknesses:    none

Bottom Line:
This shifter system is problably the most trouble free shifters you can buy. They don't break or fail no matter what. I just purchased the Centera shifters because they are made the same with no internal gear indicator and just 2 moving parts. I can't get the shifter boots for my 400's any more since they don't make them and I finally went to an 8 speed setup. I didn't need to cause the 7 speed system was great. HOW MANY GEARS DO YA NEED ANYHOW, but since everything when 8 I was kinda of forced into it. But I am giving these puppies the max for reliability and the value is unmatched YOU DON'T NEED ALL THOSE BELLS AND WHISLES JUST EVERYTIME SHIFTING WITH NO FAILURES. NUFF SAID.

Strengths:    I love the grip type shift so much more then index thumb shifting. When you are about to hit a big hill it really helps to be able to shift quickly and reliably.

Weaknesses:    None, for the price I've never had a better shifter, it even works with cheap Shimano shifters.

Bottom Line:
I guess it's personal preference, but in the type of cross country riding I do and with weak thumbs, I much prefer to be able to keep my hands on the bar while shifting. These shifters refuse to break, they are crisp and clean almost every time. It's one of the few parts that hasn't required upgrading or broke.

Favorite Trail:   Many

Duration Product Used:   More than 3 years

Price Paid:    $20.00

Purchased At:   Metro bicycles NYC

Similar Products Used:   None, because these refuse to break. I use a different shifting system on my Canandale R600 roadbike.

Bike Setup:   Gary Fisher Tassahara. I bought this bike for $375 years ago, I've replaced parts as they break. Yes, it was the last alloy mountain bike frame without a suspension fork they made in this model. I'm finally going to get a full suspention K2 Attack 2.0, but I'm already looking at upgrading the shifters to a compatible SRAM type grip shift.

Strengths:    Very durable, stays accurate

Weaknesses:    Too durable. I want new stuff.

Bottom Line:
This is the only stock part on my bike. The old 400's that came standard on many Treks back in 1995. That' right 5 years and I am still running a 7 speed because these won't break. God, I want a new set but they just won't leave. If Nashbar didn't have a 32 tooth, 7 speed cog I would have abandoned these long ago. They have stayed accurate, they are damn tough, and have survived with very little maintenance. I have broken them down only Once in Five Years. I don't know about sun damage. Mine are not stored in the sun but I have transported them in the sun and heat many times and they still look great. The best thing I can say is that every time I have gotten around to picking out new shifters, something else gives up instead. I have been through three (at least) crank sets, I am on my third wheel set, two or three complete changes of drivetrain, three saddles, etc. but I can't get rid of the shifters because they keep working. They have never been a "weak link" and when they do finally die, I will replace them with their up-to-date cousins.

Strengths:
leave a much more open bar
shift excellently on the front deraillur
lightweight

Weaknesses:
sun rots them out over time and the plastic breakssloppy rear shifts, skips, pops, and jumps require adjustment every few daysgrip wears down, making it hard to shift in wet conditions

Bottom Line:
If the shifters would not of broken i would have contiued to use
unless you use the ESP deraillurs the rear shifting quality sucks
rapidfire stay in adjustment longer although you cannot shift under as much power
