Strength:

Works every time, shift two gears/press in the rear, cheap.

Weakness:

Eventually broke

I've been using these for XC use for almost six years, and I really like them. I recently smashed my front (left) shifter on a hard fall on a slab of granite, the shifter still worked, but the plastic display was broken... no big deal though. And then about 3 weeks after I smashed the display I took another hard fall off a small (6 foot) cliff and now it is stuck in first gear. I still rate these 4 stars though since they worked really well until I started abusing them. I would recommend these for anyone who is looking for an inexpensive XC shifter.

Strength:

Inexpensive, thumb paddle works well, good ergonomics

Weakness:

finger trigger...see summary

So, I am not fond of these shifters because of the finger triggers. They work perfectly when pressing outwards with your thumb to shift, but when pulling inward with your finger, it seems like you have to slightly press down at the same time to get it to actually shift...I've tested this on two sets of these shifters and both exhibited the same symptoms.

They work well enough, but I wouldn't get them again.

Amazing quality for the price. I have been using these everyday for the past 3 months and have never had any issues with them. Such a drastic improvement over the Alivio series. It really is worth the little extra to keep components inline with the quality of the frame.

Nice shifters that work as well as shimano's higher end offerings. No problems with mine after 2 years of hard use.

Strength:

Great action, quick to change.

Weakness:

Lots of wear and tear, difficult to tune/ adjust.

I have used these for about a year now. They were in immaculate condition when i bought them, and due to the bike's layout, they have seen a lot of abuse. Only issue I have had is that they are hard to tune and the clamp for the cable is a little temperamental; also, the shifter on the handlebars is very difficult to take apart. I had a sheared gear cable due to cold weather, and it took me the best part of 2 hours just to get the remains out. Apart from this, great drivetrain system.

Held up for over 5 years of nearly constant year round riding around coastal Alaska.

Weakness:

Nothing really

Cheap workhorse shifters that came stock on bike. Never had to mess with them much, they shifted really well right up until they just flat out fell apart.

Though it doesnt feel as tight as the XTR and the XT, works well enuff for someone like me.

Strength:

cheap

Weakness:

not very precise neither firm feeling.

Good for the money.
Recomended if you need urgently a shifter or you are running full deore drivetrain.
Upgrade as soon as wear out if you have a better rear derailleur. You are missing crispness if blended with a xt derailleur, or higher than a deore.

Strength:

Still shifting fine after 4 years of abuse. So very intuitive and comfortable (for me).

Weakness:

All the plastic around it is not very durable. In fact, the gear indicators and bottom caps have busted off mine due to crashes, but it has not affected performance at all.

Great value. I have never felt a need for any higher grade than this.

Strength:

They are pretty tough shifters. Cheaper and just as effective as any offering.

Weakness:

Left indicator stops working. Still shifts though. I run 2 rings, not a big deal.

These keep working for me. I can't justify spending more for shifters that do the same thing...shift gears. I can afford higher end. I'm being practical. I've sent my bikes a flipp'n a few times and they haven't broke yet. They have been through Wa's inclement weather. I also know how to set up cable/housing and routing so there is little friction all the way to the deraileur. I know when its time to change cable and housing. I know how to adjust RD hi & low and slacken or tighten cable to get the shifting I want. When I learned to do these things my shifting has been spot on all the way down to my Alivio pods & deraileur. They are cheaper to replace compared to their upper siblings. Who doesn't appreciate that?

LX, Alivio and higher end ones when I demo bikes.
