Favorite Trail:Wherever I can ride
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $30.00
Purchased At:Neuteboom tweewieler
Strengths:Nice finish, good angles
Weaknesses:Bit too much flex (I'm a heavyweight)
Similar Products Used:Specialized flatbar, Nameless riser bars.
Bike Setup:for which one of my bikes?
Bottom Line:Nice bar, but it just didn't feel right on my MTB. I ended up shortening it and putting it on my commuter roadbike. Love it for that use.

Date Reviewed: March 24, 2005
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Purchased At:kingston classic cycle
Strengths:doesn't bend much has just enough bend to take some pressure off, look good, they have the right amount of rise there perfect for everything
Weaknesses:if i hit something hard or jump or something they sometimes fell like they are going to break, kinda heavy at somewhere around 275 grams. feel funny when jumping but they work
Similar Products Used:lots
Bike Setup:Trek 4900 upgraded alot, i still want a better bike though
Bottom Line:i would never just go buy this handle bar theres much better ones out there but if it comes on your bike or something keep it, it works it does everything, i have abused the crap out of it and it hasn't broken but i would never go downhillin with it.

Submitted by james a Cross Country Rider from San Diego, CA, USA
Date Reviewed: December 17, 2002
Duration Product Used:6 months
Purchased At:came on my bike
Strengths:strong, looks cool, almost perfect dimensions for me, but everyone is differnt, so...
Weaknesses:could be lighter but then it would cost $100.
Similar Products Used:you name it, I've put BMX handle bars on comfort bikes, I've tried wacky combos galore...
Bike Setup:Trek Fuel, XT/XTR, AVIDs, Thomson stem/post, mavics, panaracers etc. etc. etc. cross country for sure, nothing heavy, but nothing carbon.
Bottom Line:Let's put it this way, the only stock components that remain on my bike are the frame, rear shock (which I'm gonna upgrade) the seat binder, the outer portions of the fork, and this, the handlebar.

I plan on keeping it, unless I find a similar bar that has a bit more sweep to it.

If I was a weight weenie I would go with carbon. I prefer alloy so this one does the trick.

My only problem would be the dimesions, and everybody is built differently so, try it out. for my wrists, I'd like a bit more sweep.

I wouldn't say that it's BETTER than other bars in this price range, but it holds it's own.

Oh yeah, this is the Crowbar "sport" (OEM on the bike)

Date Reviewed: October 9, 2002
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:light and strong
Weaknesses:none if youre not a pro xc racer or dropping off cliffs
Bike Setup:voodoo canzo ti, xt/xtr kit, king/mavic wheels, fox/rockshox
Bottom Line:this is a great bar for those of us that ride to have fun. its light enough to not be noticed but strong enough not to worry about it. the rise is nice and doesnt put you in the "butt above your head racer wannabe pose". if you only ride uphill and buy into the hype that you have to use a flatbar for XC- dont buy this bar. if you ride everything and are willing to give up the "perfect" climbing position for a better position for jumping and speedy decents take a look at the crowbar. to me riding uphill isnt dangerous, but landing jumps on your nose because "Mountain Bike" says you must have your weight as far forward as possible is. ill take a crowbar please.

Weaknesses:none i can tell
Similar Products Used:generic cro-moly ones
Bike Setup:trek 4500 stock (deciding wether to upgrade or buy a new bike ;)
Bottom Line:its good enough for what i ride, but i might get one of those weird looking syntace combo things cause its lighter and i saw it for $40 in a magazine... If it doesnt cost you a lot i would recommend this handle bar because it looks cool and gets the job done.

Date Reviewed: October 21, 2001
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $75.00
Strengths:Light and dampens vibrations very well
Weaknesses:could be a little wider
Similar Products Used:Answer Hyperlite straight bar, Easton EA70 Monkeybar
Bike Setup:Lightspeed Owl Hollow, all XTR, Marzocchi Atom 80, IRC tires, King headset, Kore Elite stem,
Bottom Line:I have actually never seen a Ti Crowbar, but I got one somehow. I've never heard of anyone else having one or seen it advertised. It really matches my Ti frame very well and dampens those chatter bumps way, way better than the Monkeybar or the Hyperlite. I give it a double 5 chilis because it does what it is supposed to do. If you can find one, get it.

Favorite Trail:Wilder Ranch , Santa Cruz , CA
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $26.00
Purchased At:Agee's (LBS)
Strengths:A Good Handlebar. Definately stiffer than my old strait bar.Very nice Rise and Sweep(I got the 40mm(1.5") 5 degree).
Weaknesses:It was A little hard to slide into my old stem. I was afraid I was going to snap my stem in two. But after about an hour of wrestling it I got it on.
Similar Products Used:CODA Performance strait Bar
Bike Setup:Cannodale hardtail. Upgraded Fatty HeadShock, new pedals(SPD),Bontragar Superstock Wheels,SRAM 9.0 shifters and Derailleurs.
Bottom Line:I really Like this Bar. The riser bar sits me up in a much more comfortable position. I am tall -6'2 and I used to feel like I was leaning too far over my front hub. With my old strait bar I had to much weight on my hands. After a long ride my wrists and shoulders would hurt a little. My Crow Bar is great- A bit wider so it opens up my shoulders and I feel like my center of gravity is now where it should be. This Bar really improved my bikes geometry. I took off my old bar ends- I thought I'd miss them , but I feel I can climb a lot better with my riser bar. It is much stiffer than my old bar. I have been able to do some down hill runs that were just too much before - no more endos!
I give this bar Five Fat Flamin' Huffys. Great Bar At a Cheap Price Go buy one you'll ride better!

Weaknesses:Nothing yet
Similar Products Used:Some flat bars and one other no name riser bar
Bike Setup:Specialized Hardrock A1 FS all stock except for Bontrager Crowbars, Oury grips, and Fishbone BMX platform pedals.
Bottom Line:The best bar I've ever used. Absolutely no flaws. The length is perfect in my opinion, and they don't get much stronger. Recomended for any time of riding, especially freeriding and urban.

Strengths:Everything, Crowbar XXX DH - what more can you say?
Weaknesses:Nothing, except they coulda had Heckle & Jeckle making some racial slurs across the bars, instead of CROW and BAR

Bottom Line:You can put this waaaaaay back machine into low earth orbit as long as you land on the front wheel. 8' drops no problem with these bars. Bontrager Crowbar XXX DH are the pimpest shiznitz out there. I suggest that everyone buy a set...they are the bomb bait! Five Flamin Bird Turds!!!

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $15.00
Purchased At:Newington Bike
Strengths:The products strength is just that, they are probably the strongest bars I have ever ridden. A second part to these bars tha I like is that they are lighter.
Weaknesses:The only weakness to these bars is their length. I personally found them to be a little bit long, but I am use to riding with short bars, so....
Similar Products Used:nothing, I used to ride with the advent downhill bars
Bike Setup:2001 Trek 4300, Manituo sx, lx rear-derailer, shimano crank, crowbars (cut down to 21"), michelin tires, matrix rims, ati jackson grips, shimano brakes and shifters, deore brakes
Bottom Line:bottm line, for the few differnt pairs of bars that I have used, I found these to be the best pair. They are light weight, and even though I found them to be a little long for my personal likes, they are a good length right away for the normal rider.

Strengths:Strong, cool looking, a lot of rise
Weaknesses:really wide
Similar Products Used:straight
Bike Setup:trek 930 w/ lots of replacements
Bottom Line:These are awesome handlebars. I switched from the old straight ones to these because my back had been hurting me a lot after each ride, so I got these risers and it fixed the problem. The only thing is that I had to cut like 2" off of each end to get them narrow enough. I went through some narrow sections right after I got them and ended up flipping over the handlebars. They're probably meant for downhill I think, but hey, they work great for me!

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:comfort
Weaknesses:reduced my control on tight single track
Bottom Line:Ok people mountain bikes are designed to put you in a position that distributes your weight for optimal postion. Yeah this isn't the most comfortable position but it gives you the most control. You want weight on your front tire in high g turns or it will slip out, which is a very bad thing. Sure riser bars feel better on your back but the fact is you want your riding postion to put some weight through your shoulders and arms to the front wheel. My trek fuel game with these bars and I'm swapping them out with my strait bars from my old bike. I guess they would be great for riding around town or if you purchased a stem that would lower them to the correct position. Plus, my guess is that flat bars are lighter, and don't make you feel like you're riding a harly.

Weaknesses:A little too wide.(Found out first time in the woods when it clipped a tree)
Similar Products Used:Stock straight bar.
Bike Setup:Raleigh M500, older bike that is still pretty much stock.
Bottom Line:It is a great set of handlebars. Just a little too wide. Nothing that a hacksaw would not fix. After sawing off a little more than 1" from each end they were perfect!! The trails I ride are tight and wooded. The handlebars offer excellent control even for a large guy such as myself. (6'4", 200 lbs) Even when riding the asphalt, the bar is very comfortable when matched with a quality set of grips.(I recommend the Yeti brand!) All in all a terrific piece of equipment, expecially for the price.

AMP Research F-4 suspension fork
LX/T group etc.....
Bottom Line:I love the riding position that this bar puts you in . I've had past back problems, and a riser bar has corrected alot of these problems. I miss using bar-ends though, but I had to ditch them. Everybody knows that it's not cool to use both!! Anyway, the bottom line is..... this bar is strong, reliable, cheap, and good looking. I'd give it a 10 if I could!

Bottom Line:I'm a 5'4 female who felt that I had way too much weight on my handlebars. Sore wrists, shoulders and so much weight on the handlebars even affected maneuverability. Installed Crowbar Comp with 13° bend about a month ago and what a difference! No more pain and much better cornering and turning ability because my weight is better balanced front and aft.

Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:
Litespeed Hiwassee FS, White SC72UL, full XT, XTR/Bontrager wheels
Bottom Line:This is a good quality product, can't tell if the cross piece at the top reduces the ti bar vibration damping or not, but it looks nice. I find the riser does give you good control on downhills but I've never had a problem with my flat bar. The wider bar can cause some clearance problems in forest riding with closely spaced trees, the more upright position is comfortable but does reduce climbing efficiency. This is a nice product, I will rate the product not its impact on riding...

Bottom Line:I have the Cro-mo version. I'm 6'3 and I noticed that compared to my road bike I was reaching down to far to the straight bars. I also had problems tighting my bar ends so that they wouldn't move when a yanked back on them on step climbs. Not to mention I was not keeping my hands on the bar during technical sections. The Crow Bar helps reduce back pain and it feels like I'm on a motorbike. I can steer more agressively. Great bar for the money. A little heavy but its worth it.

Bike Setup:

Bottom Line:Well, I tried the bar since it came with the bike, I was skeptical of the no bar-end approach, although I climbed some things very well, I still had the idea I could climb better with the old flat bar/ bar end combo of my old bike.. so I put a new raceface flat bar with some barends on, and it was alright, but just too darn bent over.. I actually didn't climb this one ultra steep hill I had made earlier on the riser, so that threw my climbing theory out the window (I could still climb it eventually, but no easier than with the riser), then I raced last weekend in Kerrville Texas, with the constant battering of the rocky terrain, my back and arms were killing my time alot more than my legs and cardio because of the lower riding position, I actually crashed the bike at one point, and bent the dang raceface post (piece o ...) so now that I have the crow bar back on, I'm never looking back.. and I have crashed about 3 times with the crow, and no noticeable troubles or bends.. good bar!! The flat bar is a wee quicker for steering, but overall, the benifits this bar provide will make your overall time much faster.

Bottom Line:The Bonti Crowbar is perfect for my size (5'8 with a 17.5 bike frame). I have way more control on steep, technical descents, drops, & wheelies. It is much more comfortable on the long rides, and feels perfect! Although my flat bar was much lighter, I do not notice any difference in weight on the front end. BUY THIS RISER!!!

Flat handlebars beat-up your back. It beat up mine, at least. Not anymore. I threw a cro-mo Bontrager Crow Bar riser onto my Fisher Genesis bike and kissed low back pain goodbye. It's steel, and it's heavy, but you can't tell when riding it by the control and comfort it offers. Downhills are faster, but more controlled; and wheelies are now a snap! Most importantly, however, is the confidence you get knowing you can now go all day in the saddle, over and down just about anything, comfort-free. Shouts out to my girlfriend for the most awesome birthday gift ever! Oh yeah, long live the 26+ pound hardtail!

Mine is exactly like the one shown in the pic above, colour is black. Installed it on my GT Zaskar as I needed the height for I'm 6 foot tall coz I don't want my back to hurt that much. So far the leverage has worked for me as well as the 9 degrees bend. Built quality is excellent, value for money. Pound for pound I would say that it is as strong and assuring as products which are much more expensive than them. Convince that I am, I've bought Bontrager's barends just to match this handlebar.

THese are incredible handlebars. All trials riders and hardcore riders should get a set of these. They are reasonably light (only 50 grams more than my flat Trek Bar) and they look great. I like how they have alot of extra length, and how easy it is to pull up on the bars. Get Them!

I decided a while back that I wanted to try risers on my hardtail, but didn't know which ones to get. I searched and searched and finally decided on the Bontrager Ti Crowbar to match my Ti frame. Man, am I gald I did! These things really are a work of art. The workmanship on these things is beautiful and the ride is nothing short of amazing. They suck up some shock, but not too much. To sum it all up: they are just right. You've got to try these if you're looking for risers with an ever so slight amount of shock absorbance. Five chilis all the way.

I love riser bars! I had bar ends and will never go back and the Crow Bar is the riser bar that has made me never go back to bar ends is the Bontrager crow bar race. Bontrager makes a great riser bar! I have the race without the cross bar and love it. The riser bar is wider so you have more control of turning. It makes you feel like you are in more contol and the riser makes a you have a little more up right position that is a much better position for desending also. Get a Bontrager Crow Bar they are the best and riser bars rule!!!!!!

This bar rocks! It doesn't look like the picture above, there's no cross-brace. I have the race version, black shot-peened finish 6000 series aluminum. It's 25 with a 9 degree sweep and 280 grams. My back never felt better. You will gain better control after putting one of these on your hard tail. Buy one, hell you can't go wrong...they're only $29 at Mud, Sweat and Gears. (www.bikeusa.com)

I'm a believer. Riser bars aren't just for the DH crowd.
The Crowbar Race (without the cross bar) is probably the best 'cross country' riser bar available. The length is not so long that you can't squeeze between trees in tight singletrack, and the center section is narrow enough that you can get your shifters and levers on without being cramped. The angle of the Crowbar is perfect (9' bend), and the extra width does add some control. I'll never go back. Like all thing Bontrager, is realistically light, inexpensive, and bombproof!

I never realized how much a riser bar helps! My back feels so much better sice I switched to a riser bar. I got the Crow because it has the largest degree of bend among all bars. I get great control and it keeps me in more of an upright position. I dont know about durability yet since I just got it, but my back gives it 5 chilis.

Bottom Line:

This Picture is a little dated, the Bontrager Crow Bar I have is a black aluminum one peice riser bar. It weighs 290 grams wtih a 1.5 inch rise and a perfect 13 degree sweep. I got it because I needed to tighten up my control center on my 19 inch S-20. At 5'10 the 17 inch (S-20) was too small, and the 19 inch felt more stable for my size. This bar put me in the perfect position over my bike and is alot more comfortable due to the more pronounced sweep. The extra weight was offset by the fact I can loose the tree grabbing bar ends I used to have on my bike. Since I don't race, I wanted a more centered weight distribution, so as to let the suspension do the work while I just have fun ridding. This Bar helped me acheive that. I wonder though, what took so long to come up with the idea. I know this set up is not for everyone, but it has taken aload of my back and is alot more comfortable than straight bars. Yeah it weighs more, but I would rather sit on a sofa than a bench.Five Flaming chilies for this product and Keith for having the vision to see the need for it.
