Xc light knee covers..race face charge or g form?

I wear typical lycra shorts race type jersey and dont do big drops ect. All xc riding but it never fails that when i do take a spill i hammer my knees. Tired of stitches ect. Found a hardtail for 1200 bucks on Jensen. 26 lbs. I am wondering if it's a good race bike? I ride a 12 stumpy fsr. But it's heavy 30 lbs. looking for a hardtail to race with.
